  • Using a Relief Printing Press is faster and easier than hand burnishing with a baren. It’s a great addition to a home studio!

Extremely pleasant to watch.. haven't even bought a linkcut sheet yet, so excited to start (as an artist of other media). Thanks!

We have a similar type of press, but I find sometimes it can swing, does yours ever do this? And if so do you have some tips to make sure if doesn't move?

Hi! This is a great video. I have done some linocut works with an intaglio press, but never a relief press! Would you be okay with me using this to demonstrate the printing process to my students, as there is one of these in the classroom I hope they (and I) will be able to use?

Great to see this, thank you.
Could I ask what make / brand / model of press you are using in this video?
    Regards
    Andrew

      Hi Andrew,
Of course! It is an A4 Relief Printing Press - handprinted.co.uk/collections/relief-printmaking-presses/products/relief-printing-press - made by ABIG.
      Best wishes,
      Bridget

hi, thanks for sharing your artist talent.
what paper did you use to print, i used some strathmore drawing pad paper and it was sticking to the lino block. i'm new to this but am fully enjoying working with the blocks and doing the carving.
    thanks any information.

Hi Romere, we used Kent paper for this print which is 190gsm. If the paper is sticking to the lino it could be that your ink is a bit dry by the tie you take your print. If you're using water-based inks this can happen quite easily. Make sure you roll fresh ink onto your block and print as soon as possible.

@@Handprinteduk thanks for that information, and yes, I rolled ink and went search through various sketchbooks for a suitable paper, so ink likely was drying.

How well do these presses do with blocks which are nearly as big as will fit? I've been considering getting one and I don't know how to think about size vs what size blocks I actually want to print in it, and I can imagine maybe they don't get pressure all the way out to the edges so you wouldn't perhaps want to print a block that's literally as big as would fit.

In my experience, they work best when you can rotate the block 90 degrees as it helps get an even print. Adding padding also helps get an even print so with a little experimenting you should be able to print a large block successfully. However, I wouldn't want to print a block the same size as the press.

Thanks for the demo! This is very helpful. I had a question about the newsprint paper under the block - you said it's for padding but I'm confused about what the padding is for. I always thought the paper below was to protect the press from ink. Does the padding help the block stay in place - or something else? And why do you recommend more padding for thicker blocks? Appreciate your video!

Newsprint is usually used to protect press from ink, yes. But in this press we use some to add a little height to the block - it raises the block up a small amount which helps get better pressure for the print.

I’ve just got a similar press, after just using a wooden spoon for ages. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong, but the quality is absolutely terrible; blotchy, faint, uneven. I don’t know what I’ve done wrong

Same here. I had worked out myself that adding a piece of fabric on top of the paper helped but after watching this I am going to try doing the same to the bottom. Did you figure yours out? Contact the seller?

Could you use this to link print onto t shirts or fabric?

    • @Handprinteduk
      @Handprinteduk  3 года назад

You can but it's not guaranteed to be wash fast on fabric and sometimes there can be drying issues. We have another video about printing onto fabric: ruclips.net/video/dJ_ph9lSu1k/видео.html
