Salford City maintained their unbeaten record against Barrow in the Football League with a 0-0 draw at The SO Legal Stadium.
The visitors had a good share of the possession, but didn't manage to get a shot on target. The closest they came in the first half was an Ethan Ingram chance that he chested back across goal, while substitute Matthew Lund twice put wide in the last 15 minutes.
Barrow should have broken the deadlock shortly before Ingram's chance in the first half when Dom Telford's effort from the top of the box came off the post then off Alex Cairns' back, but the captain recovered to claw the ball off the line.
The second half gave supporters one of those rare viewings of an indirect free-kick for Barrow, from six yards out after Elliot Watt's backpass was kept out by Cairns diving to his right. However neither Telford nor Kian Spence could force the ball over the line, with former Salford midfielder Robbie Gotts hitting a shot at Cairns from the resulting corner.
However it was mostly a positive reaction from Neil Wood as the Ammies recorded back-to-back clean sheets in League Two for the first time since August 2022.
"We always want to win but I think to come here, it's a really tough palce to come, you know it's going to be a battle, be hard, and it's going to be find margins to get you over the line.
"We'll take the point, it keeps us another game without defeat, it keeps us another game with a clean sheet which is a major positive for us and we move onto the next game.
"We said it at half time, for the possession we had, we had to turn that possession into chances and we probably had two or three clear cut chances that we could potentially do a bit better with. It’s something to get better at."
For the possession that Salford had in the first half, it was Barrow who created the majority of the first half chances. Spence was given space in the sixth minute just outside the box but slammed his effort wide of the post.
The best chance came to Telford though as his shot from the top of the box came off the post and the back of Cairns. Usually that’s the type of effort that rebounds into the goal, but Cairns reacted well to twist his body and claw the slowly rolling ball off the line.
At the other end, with Salford working the left well, Declan John delivered an inviting ball across the six-yard box but Ingram, arriving at the back post, could only chest the ball back across goal.
The usually reliable Matt Smith wasn’t quite getting the service he needed, stretching to meet one cross with his head that went wide and another that he sliced from underneath.
Barrow were trying to use set pieces to their advantage with height in their favour, but George Ray headed one delivery from Elliot Newby wide across goal before Rory Feely did likewise just before the break.
Not much apart from the ends changed at the break, and 11 minutes into the second half Newby should have put Barrow ahead. Gotts created himself some space high on the right and sent in a low ball across the six yard area that found its way to the former Stockport County man at the back post, however his composure left him at the last second as he sliced his attempt over.
Then there was a rare lapse in concentration from Watt as he turned to play a pass back to Cairns from midway inside the Salford half. Scrambling, Cairns got across and threw himself down to tip the ball away which resulted in an in-direct free-kick being awarded to Barrow in the middle of the goal, on the top of the six-yard box. With 10 bodies on the line for Salford amongst a couple of white Barrow shirts, David Worrall took the touch for Telford to hit but his attempt was blocked, with Spence’s follow-up also diverted round the post. Barrow went to take the corner from the left which was cleared only as far as Gotts, but his return shot was straight at Cairns.
From then Salford defended the box well and restricted Barrow to either long-range efforts or inaccurate crosses, the best opportunity coming to Newby again who hit a shot straight at Adrian Mariappa.
In the final 15 minutes though it was Salford who could have nicked the points, with Lund firstly turning a Liam Shephard cross from the right wide. A couple of minutes later a well crafted Salford move then allowed John the space to cross from the left that found Lund at the back post, but under close pressure and a few yards out he could only turn that one wide too.
