Hi Jon. Thanks so much for sharing Ray's Candy Store. We're visiting from Scotland this week and popped in yesterday. What a guy - he was actually lying on the floor behind the counter when we went in, but assured us he was fine! Had an amazing egg cream and a long chat about our country, and he was delighted to pose for selfies! Long live Ray! 👍
hahaha waaay over priced, $9.50 for french toast????? in such a grubby tiny place.... c'mon. We have the same problem in London with over priced Jewish places
@@charlesjay8818 it’s cause places that are kosher have to have an extra employee dedicated to verifying it stays kosher. It’s how all places are like that
And 3 more spots to add to my list! I'll be visiting NYC for the second time next May and your videos are so helpful. You always share such special places, I just can't wait to try them out!
3:58…Now THAT would be a good kind of friend to have! Anyone who brought me a Knish (especially one of the Corned beef ones from DZ Akins here in San Diego) would DEFINITELY get a big old smile from me!-I grew up Catholic but in a predominantly Jewish school district in suburban New York City so our school cafeterias always featured Surprisingly good knishes as a lunch choice and most days I’d end up choosing at least one since they were hot and yummy and they were only 15cents in the late ‘70’s
The regulars eating there watching you record are proboly saying in their head "No this place is already packed all the time, we dont need more ppl!!!"
I (regretfully) grew up on Long Island and my dad would bring home Yonah Schimmel's knishes all the time. I've been living in the city proper now for almost 15 years and I never go :/.
What a delight to see an american institute selling 'belgian' fries, instead of french fries. They put fries on the map where it belongs! Yeah! Happy belgian :-)
So few kosher dairy restaurants left in NY. Ratner's on Delancy was kinda famous and was used in the film 'French Connection' but they went out of business 20 years ago.
Not many people make Egg creams anymore! Only the really old school people make em and it's always a blessing to order one. If you haven't tried one, you definitely should!
Ah Rays - if imagine something eclectic prob be on the menu 😀 Great to see Jewish restaurants still around. In Queens besides Knish Knosh one Bens in Bayside remain. Ben’s Best in Rego Park closed after 73 years in 2018.
Jon, first off. Happy new year to you and the family. I hope Adriana and your new bundle of joy are doing well. As always you hit it right on the nail with old New York eateries. Thank god for goldbelly. although it's a bit pricey, at least you can order some of these tasty morsels if you live out of state. Keep up the good work. I'll be watching your friend Mike. P.S. You will hit the half million mark in '23. :)
Yonah Schimmel is the best knish by far- personally, I like the sweet ones (definitely warmed up). Russ and Daughter’s is always my first stop in the Lower East Side and Yonah Schimmel is my second.
Usual high quality video by Jon. Found this one very interesting and was good to see these old school authentic places and the food they serve. I learnt something about Jewish style food. Nice to see these sort of places receive a bit of attention. New York really does offer something for everyone. The variety of food is amazing. Just like London. If your new to Jon’s video’s following his advice is no bad thing. He knows what he’s talking about.
|Loved this! So great to see you going to vegetarian places and wish I'd know about these when I last visited NYC in 2014 - if I'm there again (I'm in the UK, so it's an expensive trip) I am 100% going to these amazing places (those knish things look fabulous!)
I'm a vegetarian heading to New York in a few weeks. B&H looks fantastic, but I'm puzzled how they can claim to be a totally veggie restaurant when they offer so many fish dishes. Could you do a full vegetarian/vegan eating video one of these days please?
Two notes: at B&H dairy it looks like you had a blintz, not latkes like you said. Also real traditional stuffed cabbage has beef in it, and matzah ball soup is usually chicken broth/soup with matzah balls in it- not vegetarian.
I had the pleasure of going to Ray's Candy store and meeting Ray last March and had deep fried Oreos in Tompkins Park across the road. I got some looks from locals.
@@HereBeBarr I like to think it was jealousy but I felt like I was doing something wrong like you are not permitted to eat in that park? Didn't stop me though.
Nah this was the new world order social credit system which was going to be implemented after they fried all our brains and chipped us. It's ok you planned and it failed it's ok just be honest about it God would not allow such behavior. Aka Freewill
I grew up in New York, and Manhattan for years. Unfortunately I never even knew about B&H. Ratners was a famous dairy restaurant, right near Yonna Shimmel, which was one of my favorites.
I lived in the LES from 2006 -2011. Ray’s was something I just stumbled into one night after leaving a bar, quite hungry. The guy was already so old back then-- shocked to see him still alive and kicking. Ice cream, Egg Cream… definitely good. But oh how you missed his amazing chili-dog!!! One of the best in NY. (He also used to sell socks behind the counter for some reason?)

I’m from Glen Rock. The GR sweet shop used to serve egg creams. Where in Ridgewood did you serve them?

Please tell Ray not to quit! We're from the UK and visiting in May. Definitely going to pop up to Ray's. Can't wait!
We will visit him from Sydney end of Feb and drop some coin :)
Unfortunately Ray got his head cracked by a black not too long ago
Moving to NYC in 2 weeks. Been watching you for years, and you have been a huge help/pleasure to watch.
You got the best Nyc videos hands down
Appreciate that
Much love for these legendary NYC gems!
Thanks for joining me as usual!!
I have to go meet Ray asap! He seems lovely 🤩
He really is!
Strong as a rock, working from morning to night at the age of 90.
After 59 years as a New Yorker, I moved to Florida 17 years ago. I still miss all the great food, thanks for sharing.
Awesome! Will Check Out Those Places Soon! thanks for the recommendations
I was smiling the entire way thru this video. This is kind of content that makes you the best. You don't hear about these places anywhere else!
Thanks Mark!
My grandkids are always excited when they ride past Ray's Candy. They are excited because that is also their Uncle and Grandpa's name!
Visiting this weekend! I just added all these spots to my saved places in Google Maps!
B&H represent!!!
I absolutely love stuff like this. I live for the old institutions in this town.
Another great video. Thanks for the content. You should do a video with Myzel’s chocolates on West 55th by 61/2 Avenue

I think of egg cream as an ice cream soda without the egg cream. And it has to have Fox U Bet syrup.
Wow this looked amazing…I have never had a knish and I plan on going when I ever head that way
THANK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!
Thank you 🙏🏻 for all you do!
Love this type of food tours, full of history!
Glad you enjoyed it
Jon, ever thought of visiting Toronto?😉
In my day you did not go to new York with out eating a knish or having an egg cream
All 3 are excellent choices
OMG. Egg cream and Knishes in same episode awesome

nothing to say for today's vid John but thank you as i asked you the favor to show us some hidden gems of the kosher eateries and you nailed it 🙌👏👏👏🙌
I swear you are the best RUclips nyc foodie EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!

Say my name, I want to hear it before I drive it in 🙀
I've been to all these places but B&H, ray does have phenomenal egg creams
Omg, live here over 20 yrs now , walked past this all the time Did not realize what this place is . gonna have to go to Rays 113 ave A
The knishes are delicious!
Great video! Planning to visit Ray's when I come to NYC from the UK in April. What an amazing character :)

I love B&H Dairy. Their tuna/whitefish melt are both legit.

you are doing great job man, realy enjoy wathching. I will soon be visiting NY for sure will go those places.
B&H been there several times delicious challah and entrees. It's a kosher dairy mecca thumbs up. Very important to support small business
I know you're not a seafood guy but man, the smoked whitefish cheddar melt at B&H is the stuff of dreams.
I'd eat that!
So few kosher dairy restaurants left in NY. Ratner's on Delancy was kinda famous and was used in the film 'French Connection' but they went out of business 20 years ago.
Very true, esp in Manhattan.
I was in Manhattan this weekend and visited all three. All were amazing!

@mikef445 My boss is with your prediction - 500 K subscribers by the year end 😅😂😊
Egg creams taste like ice cream soda minus the ice cream. Must use foxs ubet syrup.
Old brooklyn. Nyer. Here.
Yonah's does make a good knish. The real deal.
I was just in NYC this weekend, we had a Knish from there on a food tour. Also had Sarge’s and EZ Paella based on your recommendation.
Hope you enjoyed them all!
Yeah I recommend the monkey t tree with curl special branches. Left and right is my recommendation 😂

knishes are also great at Mrs Stahl's down in Brighton Beach, Bklyn
God bless the both of y'all always and how is the baby doing well l hope. It was good to see you back in a video . Baltimore MD 🙏

I’m glad you are featuring B&H .. it still has edge like it was from when NYC had edge back in the 70s .. plus it’s all vegetarian !
Fantastic video. I’m now a subscriber. 👍
B&H has the best soups, blintzes, perogen, stuffed cabbage. Love this place.
I am going to all 3 places next time in NYC. BIG LIKE.👍

@iangoold4262 The place is a Jewish style dairy (no meat), so to call it a totally veggie restaurant is a stretch 😂😅😊its not
I am not sure if Zen Palate is still around in Manhattan, but they used to be written up in Gourmet Magazine, and very good.
It's old style kosher dairy (no meat) restaurant in line with Jewish dietary laws-not a new style vegan place.
It’s not a trendy spot. It follows Jewish law..
try Souen and Caravan of Dreams both on East 6th St in the east village
Good eating in the neighborhood
Yonah Schimel used to also do a Egg Cream drink.

Egg creams are an acquired taste. I used to think they were weird as hell, but now I love them.
