Russ only started making bagels a few years ago. The priciness is due to the nova, which is , by far, the bast I've ever had. It's crazy expensive, but as a treat, worth it. My go to is getting a 1/2 pound of the nova, then heading to Ess-a-Bagel on 1st Ave for the best bagels in the city and their amazing fresh cream cheese. Bring it all home and construct the sandwich there. Or just go to Ess-a and get the slightly lesser nova

About New York hotdogs, do yourself a favor and don’t have a Chicago hotdog within six months before you have 1 from New York, because it will taste like trash compared. @Cls17953 8 месяцев назад +6

One of the big reasons Russ & Daughters is always crowded is the Food Network, the internet and social media like so many other iconic places (i.e.: Katz’s). That’s why it’s full of young people mostly tourists ordering an everything bagel with nova and scallion cream cheese (and never tip the expert slicers in their pristine white lab coats). Bagels are a relatively new item and like one of the comments below, I have NEVER ordered a bagel there. They’re not half bad but like you both said, there are better to be had. I have been going to Russ for many years and try to get there once every couple of months to buy half pounds of sliced sturgeon, smoked blue fin tuna, Scottish, Norwegian and Irish organic smoked salmon which I take home to eat with bagels I buy elsewhere. There is no place like Russ & Daughters and never will be again. Read the Calvin Trillin introduction to The House that Herring Built by Mark Russ Federman to appreciate the true poetic beauty of Russ & Daughters.

A big part of it is the neighborhood has changed.
The LES and Alphabet City used to be a mixture of working class/immigrant neighborhood on the lower end of the income scale. However, especially in the past two decades or so, gentrification has really taken hold and young professionals who were priced out of the East/West Village has basically moved in at mass. Combined that with the flood of students from NYU means that this young crowd is probably the default look of the neighborhood these days...

Whenever I'm in the city I try to get uptown to Billy's. I was there a week ago at about 2:30 in the afternoon. There was a line about 10 to 15 long it still had that line when I placed my order.
All the places you went here are well known and a bit touristy. Russ you are definitely going for the fish. Everything else that's up to you. Gray's the hotdog and drink say it all. Juniors has been good but it might be a victim of it's own success.
Keep up the good work. One idea you might want to look into it is foreign culture stores in the city. Like the English Store Myers of Keswick.

I'll add my vote to Gray's Papaya on West 72nd Street. For tourists, you should know it's located very close to The Dakota, the apartment building of John Lennon and Yoko Ono (and where Lennon was shot). Right across the street from the Dakota, in Central Park, is the Strawberry Fields "Imagine" memorial. In other words, if you are making a trip to 72nd Street to see these popular spots, do yourself a favor and stop by Gray's Papaya for lunch. I'm so spoiled on them I won't eat any other hot dog. Just be aware that the restaurant is NO frills. There's no place to sit, standing only. There's no waiter service, no restroom. This might be tough if you have kids with you, as the standing tables are adult sized. It's a classic grab-n-go hot dog joint, so the hot dogs have no right to be as good as they are-but they are! (More on The Dakota: this year (2023) Yoko Ono reportedly moved out. Also, The Dakota is the apartment building featured in the classic film, "Rosemary's Baby.")

An absolutely superlative video, production and presentation. Both of you are spot-on...except for ketchup on the Gray's Papaya dog.
Russ & Daughter's has gotten so expensive. Their bagels are weak. You're dialed-in on that.
Junior's is OK...but I wouldn't go out of my way.
Gray's Papaya is the best! And I love that you mentioned Billy's. I live in the Gramercy area, but whenever I'm on the Upper West, I stop at Billy's cart on 93rd & CPW. $2 for an exceptional dog from a sparkling cart, served by a true gentleman is pretty much unheard of. And it takes a Herculean effort to get Billy to accept a tip.
Papaya King went way downhill. Expensive and mediocre. Their dogs are tough and salty. Almost $10 for two of those aberrations.
Sad that Gray's is only open until 10:00 pm thanks to the pandemic. I too loved their Sixth Avenue & 8th Street location. But two dogs and a drink for $6.45 is still pretty darn good. And their mustard is exceptional.
    Again, a great video!

I just couldn't agree with you more about russ & daughters!! my wife and had our honeymoon in NYC and got there and what a HUGE! disappointment it was!! The bagels were dry and felt like they were from 2-3 days ago!!! MOST overrated place in NYC!!
*** Bonus tip!! if you're in Brooklyn you MUST go to this newish bagel place "Ms Bagel" We got there by "accident" and it was THE BEST BAGEL we had on our stay in the city!! nothing fancy but so generous and everything was so yummy ***

Ever been to S&S? Amazing cheesecake. If you don't want to go to Kingsbridge, my favorite is surprisingly Veniero's. For some reason, their NYC cheesecake is amazing (love the almond one.) I prefer it heavily over Eileen's. Your and my favorite deli Sarge's also has very good cheesecake as well.

Russ and Daughters.... $17... LOL.... Head to Trader Joe's get a bag of regular bagels, Everything Bagel Smoked Salmon. Toast the bagel, slap on a that Everything Bagel Smoked Salmon, throw in a slice or two of tomato and onions. Same darn thing without that tourist trap price!
As for Gray's Papaya.... definitely agree!

Russ & Daughters - Excellent. Not overrated.
Katz's - Good, but overrated. Still worth checking out though.
Gray's Papaya - Good. Papaya King is better.
Junior's - Not bad, but definitely overrated. Eileen's is better, although I wouldn't consider theirs to be a classic NY cheesecake. For a classic NY cheesecake I'd go to Two Little Red Hens Bakery, which closed during corona but should be reopening soon.

Disagree on Junior's cheesecake. I love the spongecake bottom instead of graham cracker crust. Back in June on that Wed when the smoke blanketed the city, wife and I had purposefully arranged for a 10 hr layover on our way overseas. Grabbed a late breakfast at Junior's including original cheesecake, went to A Doll's House, matinee, then to taping of Gutfeld show, and still stopped back at Junior's again for just the cheesecake before heading back to JFK.

Hey Jon, a quick question: would you say bringing a baby to MET museum is possible? Have you considered done something like this? My baby is almost the same age as Alexander. Thanks!

    • @RDRussell2
      @RDRussell2 8 месяцев назад

I'm not Jon, but I used to work at the Metropolitan Museum of Art back in the mid 1990s, so let me jump in here. (You might check the Met's website to make sure these things still hold!) I'm not sure how young your baby is, but if the baby is always in a stroller, that shouldn't be a problem, with one exception: strollers are NOT allowed on Sundays. In fact, avoid Sundays if you can, it is always the most crowded day. On Sundays, checking in your stroller would be required, but it's free of charge, and no tipping is necessary either. But you'd have to carry your baby throughout the museum. Again, this is only on Sundays - the rest of the week you should be okay to use your stroller, unless some special event is happening. The museum is just about 100% accessible, with ramps and elevators able to get you anywhere inside the museum. (If you want to get somewhere but aren't sure how, ask a security guard.) If your baby is a toddler and wants to get out and run around, you'll have the same issue as with any museum, which is that kids want to touch everything and museums are largely "no touch." If your baby is just a tad older, like pre-K or Kindergarten, you should know the Education Department of the Met Museum is VERY robust, and they offer up many ways for kids to engage with the art. Everyone knows the "main entrance" on 82nd Street, the one with all the steps up, but there's also an entrance at ground level on 81st Street, behind the fountain. (Good for your stroller!) That entrance happens to enter upon the museum's Education Department headquarters. But no matter which entrance you go into, you can ask at the information desk for any handouts they have specifically designed for kids. Everyone I remember who used to work at those desks is especially friendly, and they love hearing any question that isn't, "Where's the restroom?" (Hint: the new people at those desks tend to be placed right up front; the seasoned veterans sit around to the back.) I point out the 81st Street "education" entrance only because they probably have more available access to whatever kids stuff you might be looking for. One last thing: The Met Museum is HUGE and you can easily spend all day there. But if you think you only need 2-3 hours, consider visiting on Friday or Saturday evening. They are open until 9pm those two nights (they'll start kicking you out at 8:45pm) and from, say, 5pm to closing you'll discover you have large parts of the museum all to yourself.

@@RDRussell2 Thank you so much! My baby is about 1 yo (same as Jon's son), and I am thinking not using a stroller but carrying her using baby carrier (such as Ergobaby). I am just worried the baby would be too loud and annoyed other visitors, so it could become a nightmare for the parents. I've visited MET many many times but this would be the first time I consider bringing a baby.
