The Angry Video Game Nerd and the Nostalgia Critic really have done irreparable damage to an entire generation of teens. They saw those two riffing on bad media and were like "yeah, I can riff on bad media too", and then they forget that they need to do it with bad media in order for it to work.
There are an uncountable amount of people like this who seemingly got attached to the AVGN style and took away the wrong idea: AVGN is funny because he plays a character who gets unreasonably mad at stuff that doesn't matter, but all of these people just saw the getting mad part. None of them are playing characters, they get legitimately mad at this stuff.
I'm so sad that the Yoshi's New Island segment didn't mention one of the funniest lines in all of Mario, "Suddenly... warping through space and time... King Bowser appears!" Like 😭 what were they thinking
They clearly don’t give a shit about the lore and I’m here for it because it means we get hilarious stuff like this. It’s not like the story ever mattered in the first place.
58:59 What the HELL IS BRO YAPPING ON ABOUT?? For further context that Musty didn't elaborate on: The last time bowser was the main antagonist of not just M&L, but ALL the Mario RPG's in general was Paper Mario 64 Alongside this, Dream team is a PERFECT continuation of his Character from Bowsers inside story and the previous games overall, as Musty said: Bowser in the Mario and Luigi series has typically been played as a fool. Someone who's used by others. In this game. he says no to that trope, he decides to actually go for the big game and call the shots without being fooled or used by others. He's actually DOING SOMETHING in a series that has typically played him as a bit of an idiot. which also lines up with the themes of this game as a whole as the game was made for the year of Luigi and gave their other punching bag a massive role to play in the game. But because of this guys distaste for one of the more fleshed out Mario characters, no. it bad therefore game ending bad. in-fact game worst ending in gaming history. Christ.
Bowser was also the villain of Sticker Star, though he doesn't speak, barely appears and is mind controlled. He still ends up making the enemies, "story", and bosses centered around him and his minions though. Dream Team has the unfortunate circumstance of being released in 2013... Which means that both at the time, and directly after the game, there was absolutely nothing but terrible rehash stories about Bowser kidnapping Peach. Dream Team also happens to have a grassy area, a desert, a beach, snowy area, forest, and castle, which are almost the exact same themes that Sticker Star and Paper Jam had, despite Dream Team doing them a lot better. Sticker Star, Paper Jam, and Color Splash all have a barebones basic plot of Bowser kidnapping Peach, and unfortunately they *all* surround Dream Team, which is the only "unique" Mario RPG story until the Switch era. I also think that the twist has a few flaws. For one, both Bowser and especially Antasma have done absolutely nothing in the midgame, their most impressive feats are... blowing up random background islands and making people on the island fall asleep and immediately wake up. I think they both have a great introduction, with Antasma being this mysterious evil force kidnapping Peach, then Bowser meeting with him and immediately partnering up by using their combined strength for a great fight, but then they just kind of hang around after they get to the mountain until the very end of the game. I don't think the villains were built up that well, so it makes the twist hit less hard. Antasma also has the issue that he's completely overshadowed by Bowser. Unlike Fawful or Princess Shroobs, he barely has any minions themed around him, he does less, he has less control and just lets Bowser do whatever he wants, and the final dungeon is themed around Bowser. His only saving grace is that he has one lf the best boss fights in the series. A main villain has also never betrayed Bowser at the end of the game before, so Antasma doing it could have made HIM feel more threatening. But overall though, it is a decent subversion of what you'd expect to happen, and it ends the game on a high note with two great boss fights with its villains. Certainly not a bad finale, definitely not one of the worst. It's probably one of the better RPG finales, I just wanted to ramble about it.
This really is an impressively 2011-core video for something that came out in 2018. If it wasn’t for the comment about “Smash Ultimate’s Subspace Emissary,” which clearly dates the video as being from the Smash Ultimate pre-release buildup in 2018, I never would’ve guessed the video was that late in the decade.
Got to love how he took the Nostalgia Critic way of thinking where a sequel doing the previous game's ending worse doesn't make the original game's worse for Yoshi's Island, but doesn't apply the same for Pokémon Mystery Dungeon.
My copy of A Hat In Time has a warning for people with epilepsy on the back of box, so THAT point is completely invalid. I am a Hat in Time ANDY, I adore that game
i was literally just about to comment this, people with epilepsy wouldn't be playing it anyway if they'd paid attention to the warning (which i assume most epileptic people WOULD do, because that's the entire reason it's there)
@@ThatLuigiBrothershipRender It's definitely up there for me too! I think Astrobot and the Galaxy games beat it but like, it's still VERY high regarded in my mind
12:24 Something similar happened to me with a video I commented on about Nabbit's character. I had made a passing mention of Mario characters being super simple and then someone replied like 2 years later with something like "oh look, another person who thinks Mario characters have nothing to them 🙄". Like, no disrespect to CJ Adams but I don't really think there's much to most Mario characters. Like the most I really ever say about Mario is he's a stand up guy. I've played a lot of Mario games and that's all I can really gather from his appearances. I can do the same thing for a lot of characters that aren't Luigi, Bowser, Rosalina (though that does still feel like pushing it a little) or from the first 3 Paper Mario games. By no means is this a bad thing. Just because the characters are super simple and are basically avatars and mascots doesn't mean we can't like them. I really like Toadette and I genuinely could not tell you much about her besides being "girl Toad". Mario characters coast off being charming and I think that's okay. This has barely anything to do with the video, I just thought it was an interesting discussion.
19:33 What are you talking about? I played both sonic adventures in the last 2 years and have zero nostalgia and both of those were great, have you played it recently?

To be fair, licensed games can actually be good, Wall-E for the Wii for example is geniunely underrated and more people need to play it, it's good. That being said, were you really expecting a Winny the Pooh game to have this insanely satisfying ending? Let's be honest, no, and I doubt you care.
Absolutely. Antasma has a neat design but his personality is basically just “vlah vlah vlah I’m so evil vlah vlah screeeech”. I also think the idea of Bowser being a twist villain is actually kind of neat, but it would have worked better if he (or a form of him) wasn’t the final boss in every previous game in the series. Partners in Time was so close to avoiding the issue but I guess they just really wanted Shrowser to be a thing.
Oh hey, my sister and I actually had Tigger's Honey Hunt as kids lol. I genuinely didn't even remember the ending, and I remember the rock paper scissors minigame so we must have beaten it.
Iirc, pokemon mystery dungeon gates to infinity (spoilers I guess) particularly doesnt do the fake out ending thing. It says you gotta leave and stop being a pokemon and then goes through with it (still lets you play after though ofc). Which made sense to me as a kid, though it was definitely emotional. This isnt to actually make a point or anything I just kinda wanted to bring it up after the mystery dungeon segment
I think you should react to GamingMagic13’s worst games ranking video. Just imagine your reaction when you find out that Super Mario 64 is on that list.
The whole point of pmd is that you've lost your memory of your human life, except for your name. Why would you go back to a place you don't even know? And thinking about it, they twisted the ending around in super mystery dungeon, where your partner is who was sent down to save the world (i don't remember if they ever explained why you were there lol)
