I think Waluigi has a lot of appeal in games outside of MTP and MSC (though those are definetly two of his best outings) I think the fact he’s been so beloved for so long to the point where many consider him overrated has dilluted a lot of his original appeal as not just an underdog, but a complete loser. Whereas Wario’s warpification of Mario was a wholly unique identity, Waluigi borrows just as much if not more from Wario as he does Luigi. He’s a parody of a parody. TDLR: The pointlessness of his existence is completely embraced by his characterization and ironically gives him a very unique identity, which is both charming and funny.
Don't get me wrong, I can 100% see the appeal in such a nonsense character but the 2010s era glazing definitely caused me to join the counter wave just to be different

The appeal of him being in Smash has also kind of waned massively for me ever since Piranha Plant got added, who fills the role of being an insane choice for a Mario rep quite nicely. And there’s honestly still like 4 to 5 characters from Mario I’d be more interested in seeing get into Smash before him. But I’ve always been a fan of him and it really sucks when you think something is neat and then it gets a negative reputation due to it’s fanbase being shitty or overhyping it.
