A lot of albums tend to grow over time. Lullabies to Paralyzed, Era Vulgaris and Villains are those. In Times New Roman is an instant banger, like Like Clockwork.
Move Villains to the Perfection list and you and me totally agree. I have high hopes that In Times New Roman will be in the Perfection list when I get my head around it
Era Vulgaris is definitely my favourite, nice to see the love. It reminds me of early Dillinger Escape Plan, kinda noisy & zany & compensating for less intensity with a wicked sense of humour. Never thought much of Like Clockwork, might have to check it out again.
I’ve found that they’re a band that’s always grown on me, first listen I’ve always been dismissive, but given another try the albums just work, they’ve been to me a top 3 rock band since ‘98
Love this band. So good live. I am glad they have a new album (which I listened to on repeat for hours today) just so I can go see them live again. Songs for the Deaf is easily one of the best albums of all time.
And I do listen to SftD non stop all the time, so no "rose tinted glasses". I know every beat and every lyric, even the in between "radio station" banter. So damn good. I also am shocked you don't like burn the witch! Otherwise, good review.
Clockwork is indeed easily their best album for me too. Every song is perfectly written and the production is amazing. Which funny enough, is my problem with mosy of theor albums post SFTD. Lullibies, Villains, and the new one are so muddy it takes away from some fantastic songs on each. Era is a solid album where the unique production works but has some misses song wise. For me itd be S: Clockwork A: SFTD, R B: Era, Times New Roman, Villains, Lullibies C: S/T
Songs for the Deaf is like Nevermind and Dark Side of the Moon - every single aspect is firing on all cylinders. It's like it wasn't written, so much as discovered.
QOSTA along with Muse, The Mars Volta, Radiohead, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard and Tame Impala are the best bands of the 21st century, at least for me. That being said, my favourites among them are prog ones such as Muse and The Mars Volta, but QOSTA and Radiohead would be very close to them as well (in quality as far as I'm concerned).
As much as I would like to say Linkin Park and BMTH for being the best personally, for me totally agree that QOTSA, Muse, KGATLW and Tame Impala are the best of the 21st century quality wise. Add Royal Blood and The White Stripes on that list also other than them.
Yeah Lullabies has always been my favorite. But not because songs for the deaf isn’t also incredible. But songs like Broken Box, every body knows, and I never came are some of my favorite music ever
I would have put songs for the deaf at fantastic, but I 100% agree with you that it has too much filler… especially the 3 you mentioned. Also, so happy to se EV getting the love it deserves!
I share your Era Vulgaris opinion, which is actually my favourite. It's fantastic and every time I listen to it a feel an element of surprise. After that it's Lullabies, Songs and then Clockwork for me. And yes, Songs for the Deaf have some meh songs on it and they are the ones you mentioned.
loved this video, i would just bump songs for the deaf up with its amazing road trip story. i would also put their newest album at fantastic (mostly cause im really happy that its out) its got such a fun feel with all it old and new hitting oh so hard
I have to admit, I was pretty disappointed hearing In Times New Roman for the first time last night, as Carnavouyer had me expecting something completely mind-blowing. Fortunately, I think the meandering quality of a lot of the songs is starting to really grow on me, much like with Era Vulgaris. It's its own vibe and I'm appreciating it.
This album needs a second or third listen, and thats a great sign. I think this shows, that there are a lot of unexpected elements, which sound chaotic at first, but when I learned what to expect in the second time listening, I enjoyed the playfullness (if this word exist). I hear a little bit of lullabies to paralyze and obviously a lot of like clockwork style. I feel like the songs are written with more selfconfidence than villains.
My personal favorite is their debut album, but I haven't listened to all of their stuff (I'm talking complete albums) other than some songs from Era Vulgaris and SFTD, looking forward to hearing the others too. I got into them when I heard 3's and 7's on GH3 lol.
I agree with Monsters in the Parasol. I wish it wasn't on Rated R, remove Lightning Song too and the horn section from Headache. Now you have a fantastic album. Songs for the Deaf is just so awesome and hard, and it has Nick, Lanegan, Josh and Dave Grohl... it's the coolest thing ever. Crazy to put that in third tier. I also have a big weak spot for the self titled: Regular John, Avon, Mexicola, Mule, the Bronze. If only there was a recording of Rickshaw on there too.. Love that early Queens sound. Only recently started to appreciate Villains, hope I will start appreciating INTR too :)
I can't believe I didn't know this band -- exploring now as I have time. If you wish to check-out a somewhat similar band, check out The Atomic Bitchwax.
Im with you 100% except the 1998 album i kinda love and would put in the top behind era vulgaris. Like clockwork is without a question FOR ME, their best
The new meta these days is saying Era Vulgaris was great, but I got the hottest take : Rated R is very uneven, I think it's overrated because of 3 tracks (Lost art, feel good, headache). I've seen queens 4 times and frankly the best songs live are usually Lullabies and Song for the death's ones
i'm assumimg the Lullabies ranking is based on the CD track listing; what about the Vinyl track listing with the 3 extra songs (not to mention Fun Machie was supposed to be on there too); how would that change its ranking? Or would it? P.S. i've never heard anyone pronounce Era Vulgaris like that lol
They are one of my favorite bands of all time tbh. It’s funny, Era Vulgaris did used to be my least favorite but now actually is in my top 3 QOTSA albums lol. It doesn’t top like Clockwork, and Songs for the deaf for me but still amazing album. I’ll give the new one a listen when I can.
This is the correct order from best to worst lol, including a letter grade: 1. Lullabies to Paralyze (A+) 2. Era Vulgaris (A+) 3. Songs for the Deaf (A+) 4. QotSA (self titled) (A) 5. Rated R (A) 6. Like Clockwork (B+) 7. In Times New Roman (B) 8. Villains (F-)
I was never as down on Era Vulgaris as much as some, but I can't rank it as Perfection, definitely co-sign on Like Clockwork which came out during a stressful time in my life, absolutely love Songs For the Deaf which I always tell people sounds like a robot played drums on every track, Dave Grohl is amazing, Lullabies was my go to whenever I was going out to party with friends, especially Medication and Everybody Knows That You're Insane, I've been listening to ITR last 3 weeks and I like it, me and my best friend are planning on going to the Aug 12th show in Queens of course lol
EV is very underrated, but i feel its getting more props as time goes on. You would have to say that besides Villians they have probably got one of the most consistent discographies for any 90s band that is still around. I would love to know if anyone has a band who has a better DISCOG. I only can think of Radiohead, Tool and maybe Deftones, Mogwai have a decent catalogue but have a few holes....
Id put era in perfection as well but would add luliby to perfection and move up Def to fantastic and clock work in fantastic i agree with everything else
While I don’t agree with the list. I heavily respect you for not being like every other tier list for this band. You actually state your opinion and not the general public’s opinion. I don’t agree but I 100% respect it
I listened to Songs For the Deaf a billion times it is definitely better than you say. But I agree I like Lullabies even more. Lullabies is my favorite QOTSA album. Era Vulgaris is not nearly as consistent as those predecessors. I would put it at good tier.
Need assistance! So years ago I would use someone's ipod and there was one band I liked listening too,I was super young,I don't remember the name of the song,or the bands name, but I remember what the album cover looked like, it was multiple faceless figures in a desert and one of the faceless figures was pushing a boulder, kinda dim or orange back ground, it looked identical to the Creed album Human Clay, if anyone could help me find it,I'd highly appreciate it. 😊 Also there's another band with a similar album cover it's ,time to break the spell by the veer union. It's a rock band btw.
I would change 3 things Era vulgaris down to good Villains up to great In times new roman up to fantastic I completely agree with your take on songs for the deaf,
I’m actually a little saddened by how looked down on Villains has retrospectively become. Even at their darkest and fiercest, QOTSA has always had a fun/poppy sensibility about them (Josh has, after all, admitted to being a big Britney Spears fan in addition to his more “expected” musical tastes). And I thought Villains was a noble attempt at upping those pop influences without losing too much of the band’s trademark edge. It isn’t my favorite QOTSA record by any means, but I’d personally take it over Lullabies To Paralyze and Era Vulgaris (yes, I have to disagree with your relatively high ranking of those albums 😊).
Blasphemy lol just messing with ya But I do disagree completely. I think Lullabies was their best by far, and I was actually saddened.. that Villains was what we got from QotSA in 2017 It's basically a "what if qotsa was forced to make a pop album?" record. I mean, it's better than any other band would've done if forced to make such an album, but it's just not a proper qotsa album. I do love a couple of songs on there; especially the ender, such a beautiful song. But overall, that was just a musical slap in the face for me. But also I've been a qotsa fan since their first album in the late 90s, so I imagine my expectations were very different from people who found them later. Cuz I vividly remember my first impressions hearing each album for the first time, relative to what was going on musically at the time they came out. All of them were instat classics right from the jump; until Like Clockwork; that was the first one that was a little disappointing, but it grew on me. Then Villains was a just a complete fail, and I thought qotsa had just lost their fire forever. In Times New Roman is okay, but still nowhere near their first 5 albums. Anyways, I'm really curious: around what year did you start listening to qotsa?

Move Villains to the Perfection list and you and me totally agree. I have high hopes that In Times New Roman will be in the Perfection list when I get my head around it
Never really paid attention to their discogagraphy. I will check it now. Thanks for the video :)
Era Vulgaris is definitely my favourite, nice to see the love. It reminds me of early Dillinger Escape Plan, kinda noisy & zany & compensating for less intensity with a wicked sense of humour. Never thought much of Like Clockwork, might have to check it out again.
Songs for the deaf puts listeners into this honeymoon phase and overshadows the other albums a little bit
I’ve found that they’re a band that’s always grown on me, first listen I’ve always been dismissive, but given another try the albums just work, they’ve been to me a top 3 rock band since ‘98
Top 1
Love this band. So good live. I am glad they have a new album (which I listened to on repeat for hours today) just so I can go see them live again.
Songs for the Deaf is easily one of the best albums of all time.
And I do listen to SftD non stop all the time, so no "rose tinted glasses". I know every beat and every lyric, even the in between "radio station" banter. So damn good.
I also am shocked you don't like burn the witch!
Otherwise, good review.
I appear missing is the most beautiful song I've ever heard.
People out here embarrassed about how much they enjoy Lullabies and Era
Songs for the deaf not at least being at fantastic is definitely blasphemy 😭
They're all excellent albums.
@@MetalTrenches 😆 maybe not but great band 🤘
Clockwork is indeed easily their best album for me too. Every song is perfectly written and the production is amazing. Which funny enough, is my problem with mosy of theor albums post SFTD. Lullibies, Villains, and the new one are so muddy it takes away from some fantastic songs on each. Era is a solid album where the unique production works but has some misses song wise. For me itd be
S: Clockwork
A: SFTD, R
B: Era, Times New Roman, Villains, Lullibies
C: S/T
Songs for the Deaf is like Nevermind and Dark Side of the Moon - every single aspect is firing on all cylinders. It's like it wasn't written, so much as discovered.
It's in my top 5 albums of all time
QOSTA along with Muse, The Mars Volta, Radiohead, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard and Tame Impala are the best bands of the 21st century, at least for me.
I think the newest album is fantastic. My favorite song from it is Paper Machete. It really gives off a Go with the flow vibe while also being unique.
Songs For The Deaf is the best rock album post 2000's and i'll die on that hill
Yeah Lullabies has always been my favorite. But not because songs for the deaf isn’t also incredible.
But songs like Broken Box, every body knows, and I never came are some of my favorite music ever
I’m just glad that the best ALBULM ERA VULGARIS is in it’s appropriate tier
I would have put songs for the deaf at fantastic, but I 100% agree with you that it has too much filler… especially the 3 you mentioned.
Also, so happy to se EV getting the love it deserves!
Dude did SFTD dirty, but he put Era Vulgaris and Clockwork in the S Tier, so I’ll allow it.
Loved this tier list. Even if I am the biggest fan of Villains, ever, I still enjoyed hearing yours and other peoples' views on it. Cool video!
Yeah it's a lot of take in, great songs after a few listens
This album needs a second or third listen, and thats a great sign. I think this shows, that there are a lot of unexpected elements, which sound chaotic at first, but when I learned what to expect in the second time listening, I enjoyed the playfullness (if this word exist). I hear a little bit of lullabies to paralyze and obviously a lot of like clockwork style. I feel like the songs are written with more selfconfidence than villains.
All 100% true. I’ve never not been ashamed of doubting QOTSA.
1.)Lullabies that Paralyze
2.)Songs for the Deaf
3.)Era Vulgaris
4.)Rated R
5.)Self Titled
6.)…Like Clockwork
7.)Villians
My personal favorite is their debut album, but I haven't listened to all of their stuff (I'm talking complete albums) other than some songs from Era Vulgaris and SFTD, looking forward to hearing the others too. I got into them when I heard 3's and 7's on GH3 lol.
Like Clockwork surpassed it for me. And this new one might also.
Saw them on the Rated R tour. It was just great.
🤘🏻
Switch Era Vulgaris & SFTD and you’ve got it more or less spot on for me. Enjoyed the review 👍🏼
Songs For the Deaf that low is insane but I respect it
S+: Lullabies to Paralyze
S: Like Clockwork, Songs for the Deaf, Era Vulgaris
A: Rated R, In Times New Roman
B: Villains, Self Titled
I am so glad to see Era Vulgaris there. I am always going to bat for that album. Love it. Just fun and insane and rock
Don’t worry. Every QOTSA fan will eventually have their Era Vulgaris awakening if they haven’t already.
EV is so ridiculously underrated
Songs of the deaf I used to listen to no end, what a great album that is
This is the correct order from best to worst lol, including a letter grade:
1. Lullabies to Paralyze (A+)
2. Era Vulgaris (A+)
3. Songs for the Deaf (A+)
4. QotSA (self titled) (A)
5. Rated R (A)
6. Like Clockwork (B+)
7. In Times New Roman (B)
8. Villains (F-)
Lullabies and Like Clockwork are my favs.
Nothing to do with QOTSA, I just I have to say that weather is great for a The Ocean TT
Would agree with all of those. Enslaved and Dark Tranquillity as well
Id put era in perfection as well but would add luliby to perfection and move up Def to fantastic and clock work in fantastic i agree with everything else
Worth a revisit of EV if it’s been a while
Before watching: Era Vulgaris is the best. Fight Me.
YES
Like Clockwork is such an amazing album. Josh Homme is a genius
That Songs for the Deaf ranking is criminal :(
All albums should be ranked 1 .Josh and Co. Are stellar every album.
No filler whatsoever.
I would change 3 things
Era vulgaris down to good
Villains up to great
In times new roman up to fantastic
I completely agree with your take on songs for the deaf,
Would’ve swapped Rated R and Era Vulgaris but overall, great tier list.
Spiders and Vinegaroons is a great Queens song.
Blasphemy
lol just messing with ya
But I do disagree completely. I think Lullabies was their best by far, and I was actually saddened.. that Villains was what we got from QotSA in 2017
It's basically a "what if qotsa was forced to make a pop album?" record.
All of them were instat classics right from the jump;
until Like Clockwork; that was the first one that was a little disappointing, but it grew on me. Then Villains was a just a complete fail, and I thought qotsa had just lost their fire forever.
In Times New Roman is okay, but still nowhere near their first 5 albums.
Anyways, I'm really curious: around what year did you start listening to qotsa?
@@G.G.___162 Around 2004-2005. Songs For The Deaf was my first album
