This is an issue with the EEPROM chip, its consistent with every revision of the alpha, the EEPROM chips used were defective from the release, replacing the EEPROM chip with a new one flashed with a non-corrupt bios should fix 90% of Alpha consoles with the 5 yellow flashes. Correctly working eeproms should boot without a CMOS battery installed (though they wont keep system time correctly)

Yes this model is so buggy! We do battery first, then bios next. But usually its bios battery for us! Thanks for the heads up!

I reseated the Ram after blowing the Ram slots clean and my Steam Machine is now booting again after giving me the 5 blinking lights yellow lights (of death) over and over.
So thank you for the hint!
You mentioned it might be a Mainboard or Ram Issue even if 5 blinking lights, per manual, means CMOS issue. But i thought it's worth a shot to try the Ram as this is literally the only part I can manipulate, aside form reseating the CPU.
Oh right, also make sure your CMOS Battery is actually working.
Also the USB at the bottom is a slot specifically for your controller dongle, as these were Steam Machines, designed to work as a Living Room PC, they were delivered with a steam controller, and the dongle for that can be hidden in there.

I gave mine to my brother to repair and instead of taking it apart all he had to do was plug it in and turn it on and it seems to be working properly now.

can the processor cause 5 blinks ? i tried the battery no joy. lights up blue for maybe 3 seconds then turns to 5 yellow blinks. when i get the volt meter on the capacitors at the back of the graphics chip its shorting so wondering it could be the cpu causing that or weather the graphics are fried ? thanks

Did you get it working ever? Could be video card or maybe bios needs to be reflashed?

I would first try and make sure the antenna wires are plugged into the wireless card that's on the motherboard. If they are then I would replace the wireless card. Be careful pulling the 2 antenna plugs off the card and also putting them back on. Using something plastic is always good. One screw and the card comes out. can order the exact model you have (will be listed on card) or this one should work.

Is it exactly 5 flashes still? Also make sure you hook up to screen and recycle it a few times (Hold power button in for 8 seconds and then wait a few seconds and press to turn on again)? Also one time I did one and after I got back together it got 4 flashes, and it turned out it was the memory not seated properly. I took one stick out and it turned on properly, added the second back and it was fine! Another thing to check is the voltage and make sure it's getting to MB (Maybe slightly dead new battery... don't laugh had it happen). Ground the voltmeter to a ground screw on the motherboard somewhere and positive on the motherboard side of the bios plug. Make sure its 3v or slightly higher!

@@computerspecialist8533 yes, 5 flashes. It occurred after more than a month on shutdown.
      Replaced cmos-same
      Reset cmos- same
Hooking the blue jumper to service mode then power on-same
Returned the blue jumper then hold power for 20secs and power on solved my problem. I still replaced the cmos battery coz voltmeter reading is 0.

Yeah I would buy a nice new bios batter (Which I think you may have already did) Make sure you get 3v or higher. I have bought batteries from eBay and they only read 2.9v etc. from sitting around too long. Also you can use any other 3v bios batter with wires and swap the end from the original one (To save some $$). Another thing I have seen fix "ODD" issues in general is to set Bios to defaults within the bios settings. We have other non related "ODD" issues and this sometimes clears all the codes and the problem goes away.
