What a pleasure to view a video of an intelligent, kind, loving owner. Most of the videos showing how to bathe the different breeds have the owner not showing any affection, esp. professional groomers, awful, or having the dog stand in their dirty, soapy water, and rinsing them off with a CUP with the dirty water. This on a Husky no less! You were kind, loving, and intelligent. Whew! Finally!
Another great RR video that absolutely matches my own experiences of these brilliant dogs. Of all your video's about 98% of it I would absolutely recommend to new RR owners, you seem to have the perfect attitude that works so well with special breed.
RRs are big babies with the sweetest eyes and look you can imagine. Mine will be 4 years old on December 17. They are so funny. Their sitting or sleeping positions are the craziest and funniest you've ever ser. They are true yogis. We got him when he was 2 weeks old and we have a fenale golden Retriever. He immediately adopted her as his mummy and she adopted him as her son. Almost 4 years later, he still loves sleeping with his body touching hers, all rolled up like a snail, although he is now much taller than she is. I love these two "babies" with every beat of my heart.
That no flap ear wrap is brilliant. Don’t make the mistake I made and take the bandage off too early - one ear shake and, oh my, the ceiling spray. 🤦🏻♀️ My ruined Ridgies get a night time massage with coconut oil before bed, it’s fabulous for bonding and does the job of removing any excess fur. They sleep fully relaxed and always smell great too. Plus, it’s a good way to keep an eye on anything else that might need attention. No regular baths needed. 👍🏼 As an aside, I kept fur balls from my two late kids and have them in miniature bottles. I know, but I know RR owners will understand, these are precious precious animals and I’m privileged to now have my third little man, 4 month old Luka ..who is asleep and resting his heavy head on my foot. Happy days. 💖 Super video, thanks!
I had a female. She was a cuddler. She also was the fastest runner and constantly came home with fresh food for me.keep in mind that they are hunters and in Africa are used for hunting lion hence the nick name lion dog. I was blessed to have her for 10 years before she developed cancer. I miss her so much even though I have three dog one of which I acquired after her death. My heart breaks evry dag I miss her so much. But I am grateful to have had her in my life. I am sure that you will develop a special relationship with your new companion.
We have had three Labradors...1 full breed and 2 are mixes. One is practically a Ridgeback in appearance and behavior. So much so that I am considering a Ridgeback for our next pup.
This is funny, great vid. This morning Spinoza doesn't want to go out not even for a pee, mind you the door's open but due to the torrantial rain here in Brazil we're not going to the beach beacause of the high tides. He loves water but just to dive in not to walk under. On a sunny day after the beach, he can stay in the shower for quite a while. A Prince without a ridge. Much Love.
When I got my first ridgeback( a male named Clyde), I believe I heard there were only about 900 in the country(yes this was quite a while ago). And i think I would have done everything wrong versus what this vid shows(which is good). One thing I didn't notice was how he dealt with dew claws. They are a point of problem for rough running dogs, and a pain to keep trimmed. For my ridgebacks (only ended up with 2(Clyde and Valkyrie), and a small litter of theirs) nails were maintained by running. Really. A very rare clipping was ever needed. Bathing for the male was the stream setting on our garden hose. I had an old junky car with the roof caved in, and he'd jump up onto the roof, while I filled the dent with water and then spray/fought with him. Later in life (long after my ridgebacks had gone to dog heaven(ALL dogs go to dog heaven.)), I learned a game for dogs or cats. Blankie-mice. On a couch or bed, spread out a durable blanket. Slide your hand(s) under it and attack from below. Or just be a wack-a-mole for them. Any dog I've had loves it. This game evolved into "wet doggie" "dry doggie." After they have gotten soaked, throw a BIG towel over them and dry them while you upside down blankie-mouse them.
I'm so sorry to hear about zero. 😭😭😭I had a really good cry thinking about how short their lives are and a very nostalgic time hugging my fur baby. She is a mutt but has some ridgeback in her. Shes just one ...so theres time but I know il be inconsolable too when the time comes. Its helped me not scream when she is naughty all week and correct positively which has helped us bond even more. God bless
Your videos are ALWAYS "spot on". The poses, play and attitudes captured make me want to run out tonight and bring home my Ridgeback. AMEN. I want this dog badly, but haven't pulled the trigger yet due to my work schedule. Ugh 😫. Watching your family, especially the Kids with the dogs, is such a good feeling. Keep making those Great videos. #welovethem
I lost my belowed Milli almost 12 years old ridgeback in the begining of the 2020 🐶❤️and i miss her so much ❤️hopefully i Will get à New pup in december
Great video and advice! Especially with the Dremel/grinder (The clipper click scared mine)... Just remember with my Poe, he loved baths only by repetition. Warm water & then towel off When we 1st did it, he just looked up at me with soulful eyes & ears back like "Are You SURE this is a good idea?!?!". I'd Rub extra around his chin, neck, face so he knew he was so loved Then he started likin' them a lot more to where he was standing in the Tub before I got there
We have 2 danish/swedish farm dogs at ages 2 and 9 years old. The youngest one has probably only been bathed once and the oldest has only been batched when he has rolled in fox excrement(for some reason he thinks it smells lovely!). They are really low maintenance dogs and they never smell, even though they haven't been showered in forever. They do a really good job of grooming themselves. The only downside is that they shed a lot when they change coats.
Absolutely love your videos. You guys are amazing. My little RR will be born next week and I am getting so excited. I didn’t see a toothbrush recommendation. Can you link...thanks.
this pup I have EXCELS at digging in the garden always followed by wallowing in the dirt like a pig until he is pretty much coated from head to toe. He has had several baths since arriving here. He has grown accustomed to bathing and enjoys the warm water but hates the cold shampoo. I have some concerns about over bathing and stripping any oils his fur may have naturally but even then the amount of dirt he gets into usually requires a bath after his fun. He is a very enthusiastic digger. Also, he hiccups a lot. Doesn't even need to eat or drink before hand. We can be wrestling and he will start hiccupping. Not sure if that is just a part of the high energy he has or not. He puts labs to shame in how much he bounds around but when the batteries run down he is instantly out for a couple of hours of napping.
A good scalp scrubber is best on their skin to remove their summer smell. It returns quickly if you only wash fur. They may be one of a few dogs that dissipate heat thru the skin.
I'm getting our RR pup tomorrow. Yikes😬. To say I don't know what I'm doing is putting it mildly. So the plan is to binge watch your videos and hope I nail this at least 50% of the time. We in South Africa so I just need to find out where I can get good quality treats to start pup on reinforcement training. I am stressed about the 'potty training' though 🤪😭. But your videos are very helpful and I've subscribed cause I'm going to need all the help I can get. Keep it up 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
mine is just the opposite; if he even hears the word "shower" he runs out of the room. Really. I'm sure he had a bad experience at some point with his original owner, and now at this point I need to know how to reverse this. Any thoughts?
@@CharlieWebster90501 I got him as a total mess he had huge trust issues never left his backyard in 1.5 years he would happily take a chunk out of you if you were a male or put pressure on him BUT from day 1 he adored kids and myself luckily.. He also hated the shower at the start but soon realised if he got in that's when the praise really came it was baby steps for a longtime he has boundaries and rules and has learned quickly its easier to just trust me and do what I ask 😂
Great video! Love your babies, all three. Wish I paid more attention to grooming earlier on. Now Poppy is four and Ruby one. We are ok with baths, so so with nails but no tooth brushing. Will get right on it. Any healthy treats your dogs especially like? Thanks for sharing your beautiful family❤️
I'm right there with you. I lagged on a number of fronts before figuring out all this stuff along the way. Never a bad time to get started and little victories are still victories! The split antler chews I get from a great guy named Terry who runs a shop called Michigan Antler Chews. No affiliation, but I've been buying his stuff for years and couldn't be happier about it. Most cost effective dental treat I've found is this Kirkland brand - amzn.to/2Jreh7Y - it's cheaper in store at Costco if you have a membership
Marking Our Territory Thank you, will check those out. We are doing well with our girls overall. Blue lived to 13 years two months and Joey to fourteen years nine months. I miss them with every breath I take but Poppy and Ruby are glorious beings as well. I know you understand having been through it yourself.
found out the only thing that worked when trying to get my doberman in the bath tub was lifting her butt and steering her as a wheelbarrow. not easy, but if i lifted her she jammed her four legs in the door frame. then after she ran around the house like crazy, but if i did not dry her ears good enough she came and poked her head into the bathroom with the "do a better job chump" look on her face. she always knew to make herself understood. miss her.
I've made the worst mistake in not preparing my beautiful 18 month old Rhodesian Ridgeback for the bath. And ear cleaning she don't like that either. And the bad thing is she keeps scatching her left ear. So I've got to try something to help her. Other than this she is the most cuddle Ridgeback going. Sleeps on my legs in bed.
This is a really good growing video! Thank you so much. I was wondering about the dental treat that was white in color. I didn’t see a link for that. What type of treat is it?
Alcohol w/ one third vinegar kills fungus and yeast from too many carbs, like "Savory". Use ear syringe and diabetic needle wipes. They're cheap and convenient, then q-tips for reaching in and getting folds.
Hello, I came across your channel because I'm looking at getting a RR. I know it's not really your typical video, but could you create/or suggest a video in which your reward based training is shown. I just want to be as prepared as possible. I appreciate your help!
I am new to the RR game, but You rock! Do you have a video talking about the best way to bring one of these awesome animals into your family? I have heard mixed opinions regarding adoption and buying directly from a breeder. What do you recommend? Keep up the awesome videos!
I put together this post which should help you get started via Ridgeback Rescue or finding a reputable/ethical breeder - markingourterritory.com/2017/02/28/everything-you-need-to-know-about-getting-a-rhodesian-ridgeback/ - Let me know if you have any questions
My ridgeback is mixed w something else. She has 2-3 inch long hair. She sheds a lot. Is it ok to shave her? So far I have had 3 vets says it totally ok. and 2 groomers refuse to do it, saying its animal abuse.
What is the website you got their collars from? Thank you, I've been searching your videos looking for the website all day....and enjoying re-watching them😊
Leather collars are from Sexy Beast Dog Collars, their Biothane ones (great material for swimming adventures) are from Sloppy Chops. Both excellent companies.
doesn't your dogs shed a lot? like a husky kind of a lot? i swear in my home are more dog hair than dust, any recomendations? o when you go for a walk, do you clean their feet after?
My guys usually shed the most between seasons, but definitely need their coats raked out year-round. One of the best things we did was buy a Roomba (amzn.to/2JsKfkr) and run it regularly. It makes a huge difference in how our floors look. I wipe my guys' paws after the beach but not after a regular walk outside
I have a lab and a ridgeback and while my lab definitely sheds more i find my ridgeback's fur sticks to things easier. Like my pants are always covered in ridgeback hair not lab hair. I think it's because their fur is finer and harder to brush. My lab i take the furminator and it helps with the shedding a lot.
i have a ridgeback mix from the shelter hes a really good doggo except hes scared of everything and today we are taking him and my chihuahua pitbull mix (chipit) to a self serve dog groomer so i can wash their stank away and im worried about kitchi because he will probably try to hide under me and my chipit lola will be running around looking for someone to scratch her butt... its easy to control them unless there's a loud "scary" noise then kitchi looks around like wtf was that and pulls a bit kinda like a horse so i stand there without moving the leash until he calms down and lola looks at him like wtf is wrong with you?? also i use one of those shower loofa things on my dogs to soap em up then i use a rubber Kong thing and lola loves butt scratches so she wont stop moving and she looks at me until i start scratching her butt again and kitchi wants to get it over with so he stands there rethinking his life and everything hes done wrong like taking a shit on my bed the first day we got him and the time he peed on my great grandma and another time where he embarrassed himself because lola the 25 pound chipit took him to the ground and he weighs 75 pounds and she trampled him and i had to pick her up because kitchi was freaking the fuck out....
mine is just the opposite; if he even hears the word "shower" he runs out of the room. Really. I'm sure he had a bad experience at some point with his original owner, and now at this point I need to know how to reverse this. Any thoughts?
at what age did you introduce zero to penny? I just got an 8 week Rhodesian, and he just seems so tiny compared to my 3 year old ridgeback--makes me nervous to introduce them completely (they have met through a baby gate)
Introduced them Zero's first day home. My recommendation is always to ensure the older dog is super well exercised first. Then have them meet somewhere off-leash and outside the home in an area that's small enough for you to control the situation. Feed both pups copious treats/praise during the intro and build from there
My ridgeback actually enjoys having his nails done. Clippers are fine except those stupid guillotine clippers those are awful. Teeth on the other hand he despises his teeth done and has breath that could take out a small village. Ridgebacks are stubborn as hell.
My Rhodesian is a huge baby. He will cooperate with the groomer to get his nails done, but there is no brushing his teeth. If he evens sees a toothbrush the whining starts. My parents were dental professionals and they couldn’t get him to cooperate. I do find some teeth cleaning treats and bully sticks help, but otherwise it is a once a year cleaning at the vets. At least giving him a bath and cleaning his ears isn’t too much of a challenge, minus the poor me looks I get. Lol
my ridgebacks hate water. i only bath them if they are really dirty or smelling bad. and i never take care of their nails, since they getting wear off by themself if they walk on a stone ground.
Here the same, we have never cut nails or groom our RRs coat. Our last dog lasted 14 years with no skin or dental problems. We have a 11 months old RR now and next year we probably get another one....always wanted to have two males.
I have 2 sets of brothers, absolute chaotic fun! Having 2 or more RRs is beneficial to them. Cuts down on separation anxiety, plus, it's loads of fun. My 5 males set their own hierarchy yet are close allies. With my 5, I had to give up control of a couch and a loveseat. 😂😂😂
We started Lincoln off really young w the baths and for the last 13 years he has hated every minute of it...you would think I was overtly torturing the poor thing. He braces himself against the walls of our shower, cower & shake...eye vey. Never gets easier.
That ear wash contains cortisone and it is not a PHYSIOLOGICAL wash! It's dangerous unless prescribed by a vet, it's a treatment and not something to use daily / weekly :( For maintenance you need a Physio wash and only when u have symptoms of something else you should visit vet ( i know in USA the prices are astronomical) or use over the counter products that contain cortisone without one at your own risk :s
I luv these video's on ridgebacks as they are my favourite breed, but I don't think I could live with her boundless uncontrolled energy, I am curious to know who is the pack leader in this family, I include the humans in that statement.
@@MarkingOurTerritory I guessed as much... :-) I am sure we can get you in there ahead of the vacuum.... I grew up with Ridgees in South Africa on farms and in town so know them pretty well. The one thing my dogs would always do is, never start a fight with another dog, but if prevoted and continuously chastised they could handle themselves and finish it. Which I found remarkable... given they were not guard dogs.. I am sure they would protect emily and your whole family given the bond you have as a group. Many people don't like me referring to families as a pack but with dogs that's exactly how it is.. thanks for video's the emotion you put into them sets you apart...from everyone.
My ridgeback is half pittie. He is one of a kind. He is proof that a shelter dog can be the best dog you've ever had. Check him out on my channel if your bored🙂
Well you don't HAVE to do anything, but all these things significantly improve the health and longevity of your dog. Dental issues can be incredibly painful for both your dog and your wallet. Regular maintenance saves you from both!
What a pleasure to view a video of an intelligent, kind, loving owner. I just want to express my love and sympathy for EKO RIP you now have a wonderful gaurdian angel
Who the hell would give a thumbs down on any of this guys vids. So well done. Ppl are trolls or cat lovers
Even cat people would not be able to not see the time and love this family has
We think they are SO cute, videos well done. We have a ridgeback too.
They ARE trolls.
Its the youtube algorithm, they make it so bots dislike to keep the algorithm running smoothly

Made me smile, I get my ridgeback back at the end of the month, she's been living with my mum while I got settled into my new job
Beautiful ridgebacks. Mine passed awhile back. Miss him, the best breed.

carol panagiotides awww🥺🥺 my dog is about 9 years old and I don’t want to lose her😪
My Ridgeback loves water, you have to shut the bathroom door if you don’t want him to join you. A bubble bath is no deterrent. :)
If you can get your ridgeback in a bath then you deserve an award.
Lemonade Stand I have had two and about to get my third. I did the same thing i.e. bathe them often when young with lots of treats. No problems.
We have had three Labradors...1 full breed and 2 are mixes. One is practically a Ridgeback in appearance and behavior. So much so that I am considering a Ridgeback for our next pup.

Except the chemicals he rubs on them all the time lmao
I love this video so much. I have a little dog and after each bath I wrap him up like a babushka and cuddle him. Lol been doing it for 12 years 😌👌🏾
I just found this kong brush online and was wondering how it worked, thanks!
Glad I could help!
You are all adorable, babies, dogs, and man. Lovely video ❤
love the nail grinder, first time seeing that tool
bit OTT don't ya think?
Love all of your videos, and intentions here. Bravo!!
I felt jealous when you trimmed their nails, I and my husband have a battle every time we try to do it, haha.
We're in the same boat. Our rescue Ridgy haaaates having her nails trimmed. :(
same with my girl. The first try resulted in blood all over the bedroom and we haven't tried again.

Toothbrushes are all about the same. I'd recommend beginning with a finger brush for a puppy, and then working your way up to a bristle brush.
Congrats on the new ridgie! Start everything as young as possible. Ridgebacks are insanely stubborn.

Hello, I came across your channel because I'm looking at getting a RR. I know it's not really your typical video, but could you create/or suggest a video in which your reward based training is shown. I just want to be as prepared as possible. I appreciate your help!
Ben Jimbo You will be eternally grateful you did. I have my third now and couldn’t live without one. Ahhhh, the love and joy you have coming ...enjoy!
Worst battle I ever had was trying to trim nails with Drexel and sanding drum.
“When in doubt don’t listen to me.” Wow thanks that fills me with a lot of confidence in you! 😂
@@MarkingOurTerritory thank you
1:42 is hilarious!
I lay on top of my ridgeback when nail trimming lol
We used raw cow bones instead of toothbrushes and they never needed a dental cleaning. 11 wonderful years🥰
doesn't your dogs shed a lot? like a husky kind of a lot? i swear in my home are more dog hair than dust, any recomendations? o when you go for a walk, do you clean their feet after?
What's the brand of the no flap ear wrap?
That is the brand!
i have a ridgeback mix from the shelter hes a really good doggo except hes scared of everything and today we are taking him and my chihuahua pitbull mix (chipit) to a self serve dog groomer so i can wash their stank away and im worried about kitchi because he will probably try to hide under me and my chipit lola will be running around looking for someone to scratch her butt... its easy to control them unless there's a loud "scary" noise then kitchi looks around like wtf was that and pulls a bit kinda like a horse so i stand there without moving the leash until he calms down and lola looks at him like wtf is wrong with you?? also i use one of those shower loofa things on my dogs to soap em up then i use a rubber Kong thing and lola loves butt scratches so she wont stop moving and she looks at me until i start scratching her butt again and kitchi wants to get it over with so he stands there rethinking his life and everything hes done wrong like taking a shit on my bed the first day we got him and the time he peed on my great grandma and another time where he embarrassed himself because lola the 25 pound chipit took him to the ground and he weighs 75 pounds and she trampled him and i had to pick her up because kitchi was freaking the fuck out....
I can't keep mine out of shower the whole time I have to keep closing door
mine is just the opposite; if he even hears the word "shower" he runs out of the room. Really. I'm sure he had a bad experience at some point with his original owner, and now at this point I need to know how to reverse this. Any thoughts?
After I die, I want to come back as your ridgeback
at what age did you introduce zero to penny? I just got an 8 week Rhodesian, and he just seems so tiny compared to my 3 year old ridgeback--makes me nervous to introduce them completely (they have met through a baby gate)
Introduced them Zero's first day home. My recommendation is always to ensure the older dog is super well exercised first. Then have them meet somewhere off-leash and outside the home in an area that's small enough for you to control the situation. Feed both pups copious treats/praise during the intro and build from there
I have a Ridgeback, and he's 5 months old. My vet says , cannot touch his nails until 1 year.
Lol
So sweet 😍
my ridgebacks hate water. i only bath them if they are really dirty or smelling bad. and i never take care of their nails, since they getting wear off by themself if they walk on a stone ground.
Lol ... I love y'all
One of my ridgebacks looks like tiger bread when she is wet and it’s funny
That ear wash contains cortisone and it is not a PHYSIOLOGICAL wash! It's dangerous unless prescribed by a vet, it's a treatment and not something to use daily / weekly :( For maintenance you need a Physio wash and only when u have symptoms of something else you should visit vet ( i know in USA the prices are astronomical) or use over the counter products that contain cortisone without one at your own risk :s
I have a rhodisan ridgeback and his name is Zeus named after the god
Hey you using weed to get your dog in the tub? ha ha ha @2:14
I luv these video's on ridgebacks as they are my favourite breed, but I don't think I could live with her boundless uncontrolled energy, I am curious to know who is the pack leader in this family, I include the humans in that statement.
Current household power rankings:
1. Emily 2. Penny 3. Lincoln 4. Zero 5. Our Robot vacuum 6. Me
@@MarkingOurTerritory I guessed as much...
Dremel's his dogs toenails da fuq?
Just say this is a commercial
My Rhodesian hates water
Even I have ridgeback. They are very naughty
That "shower face" they make? Yeah thats genetic...breed specific
Buenas nohes le pregunto a usted de su perro de raza un chahorito un maho
Do you really have to do these things?? I mean bathing is ok but brushing their teeth🤷🏼♂️
Well you don't HAVE to do anything, but all these things significantly improve the health and longevity of your dog. Dental issues can be incredibly painful for both your dog and your wallet. Regular maintenance saves you from both!
infomercial, shame on you.
For me, he showed kindness, love, and intelligence, and recommended some products. People can learn from this video. That’s always a good thing.
