      Probably a cliché question, but i wonder if there was a heavy inspiration (or any at all) from the other HP media, like movies and games. The first 3 pc games that had to be creative for not having the movie kind of got their own original mood due to the limitations of the time. Like, was there any obligation to use the existing leitmotifs, or did they have the freedom to do whatever they want?

    • @lyannawinter405

      Oh that's so cool!!
      How about: "Did you like the books and got your inspiration by your imagination of the places? Or was it more like that "generic beautiful fantasy tunes" were required (which you then created brilliantly)?"
      Looking forward to the video!

    The big open world outside Hogwarts was a big mistake IMHO. The game should be about being in Hogwarts, not in some random hamlet in the countryside, that's not what anyone associates with Harry Potter.

    • @robertgronewold3326
      @robertgronewold3326 Год назад +10

      I have to agree, to an extent. I like the big open world, but it's usage feels a little off. The Forbidden Forest should have been quite huge, you should have had to fly your broom for an age before reaching centaurs.

    • @PhilOfGlimmer
      @PhilOfGlimmer  Год назад +10

      @@robertgronewold3326 yeah i agree that the forest was actually quite small. I think they could have gone with the forest and hogsmeade and thats kinda it. Really for a game about Hogwarts you spend not much time there after the first like 10-20 hours

    • @Yoshiman2024
      @Yoshiman2024 Год назад +2

      Just Hogwarts and its grounds along with Hogsmeade and maybe a small part of London. Like, the shops from Hogsmeade could have been placed in a small Diagon Alley like in the console version of CoS.
      Compare it a bit to the LEGO HP games. They too only had Hogwarts, Hogsmeade and a small part of London.
      Don't get me wrong. I'm happy there was a great HP games again, BUT they should have just gone a more RPG route which was exactly what people had been asking for for years. Phil's final point was the one I agreed with the most in this video; A game that has to make you feel like a student at Hogwarts. I agreed with some other points as well, don't get me wrong...
      I think the most fun part of this game was that you could just free roam and play as some random pupil if you want. Only they didn't really capitalise on that. Instead they created an overly produced story (which I thought wasn't really interesting), while they already had almost all of the assets to create a great role-playing experience.
      Luckily they still chose to go for the single player route, though... But I still believe it was a bit of a missed opportunity since I don't think ALL single player games these days need a story with cutscenes and all its glitter. Just let the story play out in itself by letting the player play the game how they want to. Let there be lore, but in the background. That way it's up to the player to choose whether or not they want to be invested in a story.
      For example, let the game start of with the sorting ceremony and some introductions etc. Then you get to roam free, attend some classes to upgrade your stats, engage in activities, make friends with whoever you want to and benefit from some extra skills you might pick up by befriending them... Just a thought...
      PS: Besides, as an adult, how much time do you REALLY have to bother with a story that you might or might not be interested in?

    regarding immersion and how it doesn't feel like you're a student at hogwarts, i feel like it's because they were trying to make a game that's as much for gamers who aren't hp fans as much as it is for hp fans. so they let go of some of the "quaint boarding school" elements that made hp nostalgic for those of us who grew up reading it as young schoolkids

    I received Hogwarts Legacy today as a gift and I must say while I love the game and the graphics are incredible, I do quite miss the orange&blue aesthetic of the old games! Also the new design of the Grand Staircase is a total miss I think. The movie one was perfect and uncanny, the new one feels very generic fantasy. That being said from the few minutes I have played I can already see the narrative is soo much better and the thought behind the castle design must haven been immense.

  • @AngryWindmill

    I honestly was surprised to see how much freedom they let you have in this game, you really don't feel like a student at all. You can dress up however you like (I went around with a black cape like batman for a while and it felt so out of place), you can go wherever you want even though you're literally 15 and the adults at the school are supposed to always have the students around, like if the parents knew I went on the other side of the world to fight trolls and goblins and the undeads they would riot irl. And WHERE are the prefects? Why is the school so dead during the night? They even programmed some bits with prefects and teachers or ghosts that you need to avoid, was it so hard to have them patrol some corridors when the sun was down? The damn ps2 game managed it I mean. I understand that they want you to explore and all but was it so hard to make it so it was a little harder at nights? Nobody would've been surprised I mean even in the movies they make a big deal about sneaking out of bed at night, breaking the curfew and then being caught by a teacher, it would've make everything way more exciting.

    Hogwarts Legacy really could've used a bit more wacky wizzard game stuff (like gnomes or other wacky creatures) and indeed, I am sad they didn't give more exploration and puzzles to the player.
    Some puzzles where fun but a lot where either too easy or got tedious because they got repeated over and over again (Looking at you, 95 merlin trials).
    We didn't get to move trough a single painting, nor actually compete for house points. There was a day and night cycle, yet no restricted areas safe from 2 missions.
    Like let me sneak around at night for secrets I can't get to during the day, trying not to get caught or lose house points which I then need to replentish by gathering potion ingredients for proffesor Sharp for example.
    Create real consequences for using the 3 unforgivables, but also create slytherin themed secret areas only accesable trough the use of these spells.
    Make though and interesting puzzles, which you might not be able to solve unless you have the correct spells unlocked, but offer great rewards.
    Also, allow us to actually craft potions with a minigame, but this creating a pot with like 5 potions in it.
    Hogwarts legacy has a lot of nice things going on like you said, but it just lacks some of the more interactive game mechanics which I hoped to see.
    We didn't even go trough a single painting for crying out loud! (unless you actually walked trough the Gryphondor common room entrance).

    In a way, I'm actually more anticipating Hogwarts Legacy 2, now. This new game is very solid, and they did a great deal right and some things very wrong. So I think with the inevitable sequel they will know exactly what to adjust. For example, maybe instead of random loot drops in chests, just have the occasional actual clothing item to wear, but the rest being transfigurations for the appearance. Also, good grief, bring back the gnomes. A gnome hurling game was literally in the concept art, and they cut it. Bring it in for the sequel, I want to toss those little potato heads!
    At least as of now we know that Quidditch was not in the game because they are essentially making a full game for it, and if it's just an updated version of Quidditch World Cup, I'll be a very happy camper.

    • @robertlaidlaw4592

      @@patyos2 add a Fifa style quidditch game is the biggest thing, could even have tournaments throughout the year, or maybe potion mastering minigames where you have to find ingredients though side quests to discover new potions to get rewards and different endings, I think this kind of things would be enough to justify a new game as long is it adds a new story, I think the timepiece Hermione has could be a fun gameplay device. To be used in certain missions.

    Great video Phil! As others have said it is a good point to lift these different aspects instead of making a direct comparison between old/new.
    With that said, my biggest gripe with HL is the overall feeling of sloppyness or maybe lack of afterthought. I really really don’t like that you can jump over some of the castle interior but not others, makes it feel as if though it was put together by chance. Same with the room of requirement where you are allowed to enlarge and shrink every piece of transfigurable item you have. It is cool, sure, but it makes no sense at all why a couch could be made silly small, or a bookcase stupid big. It makes it (to me at least) super obvious that they just happened to create this functionality in the game engine and applied it everywhere without consideration.
    These are all very nitpicking examples, and who cares really, but as a vivid fan of the universe, I want it to get the respect and attention that I feel it deserves. And the weird story is just icing on the cake at this point lol.
    Sorry for this long comment lmao

This video right here changed my mind, as it isn't fair to compare this to the old games. The charm is different, but it still seems magical and wondrous, as was the world of Harry Potter all the way back in the early 2000s. Thanks for this awesome video Phil!

    Yes, it does remind me of previous games in some aspects. I am amazed about the level of work, but I wish they had thought a bit outside of the box instead of adopting ideas from different games. The first 3 Harry Potter games were my favourites despite their problems. In terms of collectables, old Harry Potter games have an edge. Players weren't collecting random clothing items; they were collecting wizard cards and sweets. Sucks when you solve a puzzle in Hogwarts Legacy, and all you get is 500g or clothing items. Creators should have looked at previous Potter games and improved on some of the ideas. It's a shame that 95% of the game takes us into the random ruins, dungeons, caves, and countryside. Side quest with fetch me this or that is boring.

    It felt like this to me as though the first 3 Harry Potter games were best for PC not because of better graphics but because of the gameplay as for the others mostly felt as though they were more made for consoles than PC and that's how i think Hogwarts Legacy will be best for. Don't know yet because i still need to wait for the cartridge to be released for the switch, I do agree that the Chamber of Secrets was the best one for PC but to me it was mostly because you were able to skip through the comments being said unlike the first game yet so far according to what i think and feel is that all the originals from years 1 to 7 are better in gameplay from what i have watched through your stream Thankyou for some hints and tips for when it will be available for me to buy

    While visually, audibly, and atmospherically, Hogwarts Legacy fucking nails it... This game pisses me off so much and I'm probably never going to play it again. As short as I can keep it:
    - combat is easy and fairly boring on Normal, but annoyingly bullshit on Hard, at least on controller
    - the whole crafting and currency systems make it feel too grindy (sidenote, could they not just give us a potions minigame for crafting potions? Instead of the dogshit alohomora minigame which makes no sense anyway)
    - Hogwarts is enchanting but... Like 90% of the story happens in the empty overworld and boring caves? I barely get to explore Hogwarts (also fuck Revelio as an exploration gimmick)
    - puzzles are so uninspired that at one point I thought the game wanted me to be smart and use Arresto Momento on a platform in order to solve it, but I just didn't notice the extra butterfly in the room
    - bro get that dogshit stealth mechanic out of here, it barely works too
    The only things I have fond memories of about this game is, as I've said, Hogwarts as a whole, the trumpet flowers next to the Forbidden Forest, and pokemon-ing magical creatures
