I heard a while ago that in this performance, bruce's vocals are live, but the backing music's pre-recorded. Not maiden's decision - they'd do it live if they could!
There was an article on Maiden's website at the time where the producers had told them they would never be able to do their sound justice, but they were happy for Bruce to sing live and for Nicko to drum live, but with the mics off. Producer at the time Chris Cowey was a Maiden fan as well.
Bruce is singing live, but the rest of band isn't. This performance on TOTP is what got me into Maiden and metal xD. Seriously. I don't even like the song that much anymore, but they must have done something right to convert me =D \m/ UTI!
I'm sure I remember watching this with my dad when I was like 9 years old. It obviously made an impact on me, coz I'm only 14 now and I love 'em to bits!!!!! UP THE IRONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!\m/
Guys, Top of the Pops is a show where the instruments are playback but the vocals aren't. This one is no exception. There are some exceptions though. The first band to play live on that show were The Who back in 1972 and second were Iron Maiden themselves, back in 1980.
It is so unlike Iron Maiden to appear on TV shows... I wonder what got into their heads. Still, awesome performance and, in my opinion, great song (some people might not think so, but I like it). I may be wrong, but I think the instrumental part is a recording and not actually played on the spot. Can someone confirm this? It is soooo not Maidenish...
Yes, Bruce is singing live but the rest of the band is miming. This was a fairly common practice on Top of the Pops - another variant was for the drummer to play live and the rest of the band (including the singer) to mime. I think Maiden did do one or two fully live performances on TOTP over the years though.
If it is play back, then it’s a recording of them playing it live and the audience are being very co-operative . Different parts stand out musically compared to the album
The word "heavy" these days is too often mistaken for "loud". Originally "heaviness" referred not to loudness or thrashyness but to the complexity and speed of the music.
YEAAAAHHHHH! One of the few bands EVER to be allowed to play LIVE on TOTP.. Loads of people debate whether video clips and artists on TOTP are live... all of them mime but Maiden refused to do it unless they are live.. yeah!
For all the peepz who don't know it... This is completely Live... In the early days it all was playback, but Iron Maiden was the first band witch played exualy live at Top of the Pops. After that, they let more bands do that. It always was TotP who didn't want is cause they wanted nice clean sounds. At 1 show with Maiden, they all switched with their band mates when it was playback, to make a point and let them see how fake it was.
yeah if you read the biography "run to the hills" they had a disaster when they played on TOTP after killers went in to the charts. the guys at the BBC turned down the PA to the point where it just sounded stupid, and Clive at the time had to play with padded drums. They avoided TOTP for years after as Steve considered it a farce. This time the guitars are recorded album and the drums and Bruce are live. Still great to see gods on the TV again.
Yes, Adrian uses wah in the studio version, and in this, but where is the pedal? I Think this is a singback. Instruments from the CD but Bruce sang it live.
This is actually playback. They played Running Free live in like 1980 and that was the first time since The Who that someone played live at TotP. This is, sadly, not live.
You're close bout the origins of the word, arwestromen. But I think originally, "groovy" and "heavy" had opposite but related meanings - "groovy", as you said, low, slow and fluid/easygoing; "heavy" being somewhat higher, slightly faster and more rigid/complex sounding. In normal 60s speak, the words had opposing meanings too, "groovy" meaning cool/fun and "heavy" meaning serious. I think you are right to relate it to 60s musical terms: "heavy" was to differentiate it from "groovy" rock music.
You said: "It's not playback, during the solo it doesn't sound exactly as the studio version! Btw, love Bruce in all leather! Up the fucking Irons" For this reason i said that you need listen the song "the guitars does'nt sound exactly as the studio version" Bruce sings:"I'm Gonna Break Away! I'm Out On My Own" in this order in the studio version i think that for this reason you thougt that the guitars are strange in the middle. Also in live they don't play the high notes after the guitar solo.
@norskey86 Yeah, I do remember them once saying that the TOTP studio i very quiet and there's a bad live atmosphere. Maybe they did decide to use a pre-recorded backing track then >.< They do appear to prefer live gigs to this kinda thing though (...even though Adrian looks like he's having an awesome time in the solo lol!)
First.. time watching maiden with isntrumentals play back... lol anyway Bruce did it great, and chorus of Adrian and Steve too jeje but sounds weird with guitars playback hahaha UP THE IRONS
I agree, but The Old Grey Whistle Test and The Tube had died off by then, and the great John Peel is no more. If metal bands in Britain want exposure outside of specialist outlets, TOTP is the only real choice. Tragic, yes, but it's an improvement over MTV and VH1.
@@rogershore7189 Thanks for telling me that, I've been playing drums for near 40 years so you want to tell me what the sticks are for, mong? Bruce Dickinson doing Iron Maiden karaoke.
Nice seeing Bruce´s in his leather outfit from the Fear Of The Dark album photoshoot ;)
Up the Hammers!
There's one hilarious clip of them doing Wasted Years playback on some german show in 1986... You've got to watch it, just awesome.
singing live - unlike so many bands on TOTP at the time. They had to film this during the day with only maiden fans in the building lol
Amazing how they can do this kind of thing and still not be the slightest bit commercial!! =P

maiden one of few bands seen on totp that will only play live no playback

Brilliant MAIDEN live in top of the pops🤘🤘👀 well almost.. Brucey was..definetly..😁
No way, this is totally live, man. Iron Maiden just sounds THAT GOOD live.

Now kids THAT IS ROCK and ROLL!!! Up the Irons!!!!!!!
Get well soon Bruce!
That was a shortened version of the song.
Wow so strange to see Steve Harris with the chess bass he used in the 80s
It's not playbeck! they have been the first who played live at top of the pops...I thought so too before I learnt more about iron maiden! XD
maiden really need a bigger space for them to run around
damn whata beautiful guitar adrian plays on!!!

you're totally right they need more space 2 make a show they usually take off 4-5 kilos when they have concerts
I wonder if Bruce's Paul dianno get up was to mean anything?
I guess they're not that used to a stage as small as this one... :D
The sound environment that TOTP provides is not Maiden-friendly (check their remarks on first TOTP appearance).
I actually low key don't mind this shortened version
Fuck yessssssss!
iron maiden told totp that they were not going mime sounds even better because its live.
wow that's live just watched the wickerman at top of pop poser city this is better
the singing its not playback
but adrian's guitar solo and riffs definely are
the song last 45 sec less than on album! O_o
how's that?
