  • Using This low cost Digital Calliper = PASS / FAIL = How to TEST accuracy and how to use.
    By comparison a digital calliper is surely the most useful measuring tool in a shop, from machinist, to mechanics, to hobbyist, etc... We all need to make precise measurements.
    Even not being the most precise tool in metrology, the calliper is the most precise tool many people will ever use.
    How can we know if this tool meets our standards, by testing it according to a reliable standard, the ASME B89.1.14 is the basis on testing a common caliper. We'll test the 4 basic functions and see if this tool is good enough to be in anyone's toolbox...
    We'll just get 2 birds with one stone, this caliper was given to me by Banggood for purpose of evaluation, so, by needing to make the procedure to see if it would be a PASS or a FAIL, might as well make a detalied video on how it's done, if you need to do the same for something you own or thinking to acquire, then, you can inspire yourself from this video in order to test your own tools...
    ====================================================
    """DISCLAIMER"""
    This tool was given to me by Banggood in order to make an evaluation, this is my evaluation in real time.
    ====================================================
    Here is the direct link to the calliper tested in this video.
    Please note that the purchase price may vary depending the time of purchase, the available discounts or promotions, be sure to look for those discount codes when available.
    There are also some interesting items that I personnally tested and use, those are worth purchassing since the price / quality ratio is excellent.

    That is a good suggestion for using gauge blocks in place on a ring gauge. I am going to try this for checking my ID mics. I have been using an OD mic set to specific dimensions , but the blocks should be more accurate and also gives a larger contact surface. Thank for sharing.

    Cool, thanks for doing this, Pierre. It is good to know how much one can trust his/her digital calipers, especially as quality can vary. For the price that set you tested in this video seems to be a decent unit. I use the one set of digital calipers for a lot of what I do but as per my machining instructor, only trust it to within a thou or two, not really using it for bearing fit type work. You have some nice test equipment to verify your measuring tools, very handy for doing a real test of resolution quality like this one. Those gauge block holders would make it easier for sure and the setting rings too. Thanks for sharing!

    If you want a correct measure across longer span you lightly rotate the part around an imaginary axis connecting the jaws which is also perpendicular to them. Then you bring your part to stop in final position. That self-locates the part at the "lowest measurable" distance in the jaws.

      Someone just brought me one that has weird reactions towards the end of the scale, like displaying random numbers, yesterday I played with it and discovered that the plastic covering is lightly rubbing on the cursor portion or the in other words the travelling head, I finally removed the plastic band and replaced it with thinner adhesive tape and the problem went away...
      This seems to solve the problem for good, as when the plastic band, when removed and rubbed on the reading portion of the head was causing some reaction on the display...
      Just to mention that I opened the reading head by removing the sticker in the back as well as the 4 screws, nothing springs out except that bronze or brass spring that adjust the tension on the glide bar, once put back together everything works perfect, no more random readings and the repeat is also flawless...

      The rating is +/- 0.02 for measures under 100mm and 0.03 mm for measures above, a caliper is a great tool when it's repeatable and withing the tolerances of the work you need to perform.
      If the jaws are showing "VERY LITE" irregularities it's possible to use a 5000+ grit precision small stone and hone the surfaces, beware this is a very delicate operation and only performed if you are aware that you could also ruin the tool if you fail...
      For the feel, just practice with known references until you repeat all the time, get some random gauge blocks values and write your readings taken blindly... after you get good at it it won't matter if you already the value before the measurement... ;)

      Was also surprised on how the inner measurements were close and accurate, this is often one of the bigger problem with even the most eppensive calipers, the problem is to match the inner jaws to the outer jaws during manufacturing...

      Hi Pierre,
      I have been mulling over your statement in the previous reply "Banggood is a little like Amazon, it's many merchants that sell under the Banggood banner."
      I'm not sure that is correct. I've always been under the impression it is many "brands/manufacturers" that sell through the Banggod portal/shop.
      Amazon and Ebay are just a whole lot of little shops selling various stuff through one link, but I think Banggood is quite different. BG is dealing directly with the manufacturer, not some middleman like Ebay and Amazon.
      I know through dealings with BG that they have direct contact with the manufacturer and supply feedback if necessary.
      I think that is why they are keen to get product reviews, as it gains exposure and also helps them identify the duds.
      Cheers Rob

      You my be partially right about this, it seems to me it's not only manufacturers, some sellers are selling different sorts of items, like garments, kitchen accessories, tools, toys, etc, under the same roof, those are probably wholesalers or distributers, but from here it's difficult to sort it out, possible it's a mixture of all those...

    Of the import calipers I have used, the ones with the LR44 batteries (about $20) seem to skip counts, and do not always return to zero. The ones with CR2032 batteries (about $40) do not seem to have that issue, and the batteries, while more expensive, last longer. On both designs, the quality of the jaws and slide varies, but I think the electronics run in two types, and are all copies of each other.

      So far all the lower priced imports I got ( 3 in total ) are powered with AG-13 or LR44 batteries, there don't seem to be issues with them, since most of my digital calipers are Mitutoyos, I only have a few cheaper imports, those have been quite reliable for maybe the last ten years concerning the older ones. My whole collection of calipers totals about 15+ from 6" to 40", some even being brand names are better than others... ;)

    I have a custom step guage lab standard that was given to me. Has one inch steps from one to six inches plus a half inch ball right in middle. Has chart of exact lab measurements at a given temperature. Nice hunk of tool steel.
    Don't care for the fractional displays because none of them reduce the fraction. So you get 12/32 or 24/32 instead of 3/8 or 3/4. (As I recall, might even have been 24/64 & 48/64ths).
    Might buy me one of the Banggood calipers, as my HF calipers all suffer from short battery life. Something in design draws power from battery even with display off.

      @pierresgarage2687  5 лет назад

      A decent shop needs some reliable standards to refer to, those days an Asian gauge block set is around $150 or less, and, surprisingly accurate enough for most shops...
      The fractionnal of this one is intersting as it simplifies the equation to it's simplest denominator, so you get 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, etc... more usable than 128th...
      Not all cheaper calipers suffer from the battery hungry syndrome, so fat this one seems all right, but, I'll keep a record on how they do, one or two batteries per year is acceptable, but, once a month isn't... ;)

      Those are good for a beater caliper or for home shop owners on a budget, or anyone who don't really need aerospace precision, here I use those cheaper ones to do my roughing on parts, then, when I get close to finish or critical I switch to better tools like micrometer or similar precision...

    Aside from straight up sloppy manufacturing (machined badly or not cleaned), the only issue I've had with chinesium measuring tools has been durability. They all start out measuring well, but the steel wears in normal shop use. Could I persuade you to test the hardness of the jaws vs. a name brand caliper?

    • @pierresgarage2687
      @pierresgarage2687  5 лет назад +1

      Hi, you made me curious about the hardness, went in the shop and tested some calipers....
      Results are:
      The 6" Daniu from this review: 48 RC
      Mitutoyo 8" about 10 years old: 40 RC
      Mitutoyo 6" about 25 years old: 54 RC
      2 times 6" from Canadian Tire: Both 53 RC ( 1 is about 4 y.o. the other one about 12 y.o. )
      The finish is a little better on the original Mitutoyo's and they're somehow a little smoother, but they cost over $150 or so... The other ones are all right as beaters or as general daily use for rougher jobs... at under $15 or $20...

    You zeroed when it read "-0.0005" which could have been "-0.0003" in actuality, making all the measurements off, and when "zeroed" it would be off for most measurements, but if it was "0.0001" over, it would read accurate.
    Basically, I feel like it could have been accurate for all If you clean, and re-zero I think you would get better results. But still I like the video, just giving some non-expert input.

It's amazing how quickly the numbers will change (down to the thousandths) while the action(or whatever its called) is sliding. Hundreds of times per second seemingly.
      Anyway, I will pass it along one day if he decides he doesn't want it back. Definitely wouldn't blame him if he did. At that price point though, I figured it was probably had some kind of industry certification or something. In the food industry every utensil has to be National Food Safety certified which turns a $100 blender into a $700 blender. Why? Well, reasons of course. Bought a second one just the same about 4 years ago, that second one wasn't up to the quality of the first one... :(

      The main goal if this video was to show how to certify yourself a caliper by using the proper procedure, Banggood gave me that tool for reviewing, so I used that tools to show the procedure, lucky for them, the tool happenned to be a decent performer.
      It's nice for some people to be shown how to test tools they actually own, and, if a low priced tool is able to be a decent addition to their toolbox, it may be a good reference to eventual purchase.
      As you may not like tool reviews, just abstract the given tool, you can enjoy the part about how to do the testing in respect of the ASME standard fashion.
