  • I've driven some sketchy cars, most of them haven't been a legitimate rental. This Turo rental is an example of a car that really shouldn't be on the site.

My family has three Jeep compasses I can confirm that. Only ones that I’ve seen the bumpers line up on is the wranglers and they don’t even have bumpers like that. Also on jeeps that rear joint he showed that wasn’t centered all the ones I’ve worked on they were never centered even at low mileage. So I’m assuming it’s supposed to like that

For clarification the jeep is not the persons everyday car, it was purchased specifically to rent on turo. Also I consider a car totaled when the cost to repair it is greater than the cars value.

    • @Sweetheartxx195
      @Sweetheartxx195 5 лет назад +29

I agree it is definitely worn and has relatively high mileage especially for a rental service vehicle. To replace all of the bushing, and shocks/struts front and rear, the oil pan, and leaks... not to mention why the engine light is on is certainly more than the vehicle is worth. The interior is unnaceptable for any form of rental car. My opinion overall is this vehicle is about average for the mileage and areas it's been. That being said this vehicle should NOT be used in any form of rental service although i 100% feel if the owners of the vehicle sold it as is to someone the only unsafe thing i noticed was the suspension, bushings, and rear trailing arm.

You don't consider a vehicle totaled if the cost of repair exceeds half the value, insurance companies do.. you aren't titling cars as salvage or cert of dest. This Jeep is just old and dirty, you can't file a claim over that. If your tow truck had a fender bender damaging the bumper and quarter panel, you would consider it totaled based on it's closest blue book value?

They spray this like oily sandy shit all over the bottom of the vehicle and you just avoid doing undercarriage washes until after the winter ends. After that it starts to just sort of come off on its own from the heat and regular car washes. It's basically like a tar goo that catches all the salt and shit and keeps it from ever contacting the metal. The control arms are shot, you can see where the control arm actually flops around and inpacts the bushing which means you whole wheel is moving front to back in the wheel well as youre driving. The shocks are blown out,. The rear pinion seal is leaking all over and keep in mind the rear diff doesnt hold that much diff fluid, so when that dries out and over heats the rear axle can lock up while your driving. This is way beyond basic maintenance and the owner should be ashamed and liable for renting out this car.

That secondary hood latch is designed so that the force of closing the hood forces the latch into the position that holds the hood down.
Those suspension bushings aren't a big deal. Pretty much anything of that age is going to have such irregularities. Rusting oil pans don't just suddenly gush all their oil out. They develop a pinhole which causes a really slow leak and the leaking oil actually inhibits the rust in those areas.
Overall, much better than a lot of the junk I have driven over the years. That jeep didn't even have great big rust holes in its floor pan. It is what you have to drive when you have not a lot of $$$$. Somehow I got by on such vehicles, and I drive like 23,000 miles a year.

I thought it was pretty snobby as well until he showed the underside of the car and the damage it has. Even if you ignore the rough exterior, the suspension being in the shape that it is and the oil pan having flex indicate that the car likely needs a lot of work to just be in acceptable condition. If someone gave me this car and I had the time to just do the work on my own I may fix it, but it would really matter how rotted the frame is. I'm sorry it's not an immaculate 2019 range rover with 400 miles on it. That vehicle was probably on turo as well, but they wanted $800/day for it and only included 20 miles/day with a $2.75 fee per mile after that.
I've rented two vehicles on turo, both were immaculate. However, I also knew exactly what I was looking for and what I was renting. I didn't look for the cheapest 2003 corolla or w/e I could find and rent that and be disappoint.

Its not cheap, that car shouldnt be $140 for two days. I can rent a brand new jeep from a local spot for cheaper. The car is in bullshit condition. Yeah we get your joke, robs a spoiled little girl. Hes not complaining about getting cloth seats and he wanted leather. It had body damage, check engine light, stains, missing interior pieces, broken interior pieces, etc. Hes not being a baby here, that car should be in some dudes driveway, not for rent, or atleast not for that price.

@@gangsterdisciple759 This jeep is $44/day if you go look on turo for yourself, I just did. Turo adds a 7.24 fee/day on top of that, and then you can get insurance if you wish. If you decline insurance it's 102.49 for 2 days. That's for week days..it's 5/day more during the weekend which would bring the total to 113.28 if you rent it 2 weekend days and decline insurance. You can find a brand new grand cherokee for cheaper than that? please provide proof.. Hackensack (which is where this jeep is located and Rob rented it) enterprise says 154.09 for 2 days with a standard suv, which you have really no idea what vehicle that will be.
Rob should have went that route or just found a nicer vehicle on turo (which there are many) for a couple dollars more a day. But no, he found the cheapest thing and then decided to complain about it. If he would have read the reviews on that vehicle he would see that others have said in the past that it's in rough shape. I'm actually thinking he rented it on purpose just to shit on this guy and make a video 'oh turo sucks..come rent one of my cars for $1500/day with a $10k security deposit and 100 'free' miles'.

The service could easily have a simple nation-wide inspection checklist requirement from any ASME certified shop to prevent most of this stuff. It would also encourage people who are looking to buy a vehicle specifically for renting on their platform to get the car inspected before they buy further reducing this issue.
Further, they could encourage shops with some sort of preferred inspector status in a given locale and some sort of financial incentive (this could be as simple as your shop is the only shop in that locale that Turo will accept inspections from if you'll do it for a set price) to reduce the cost of getting the inspections.
I imagine they currently don't do this for some sort of liability reasons, but the first lawsuit that comes through from someone dying in an unsafe rental will likely change that policy as "the title was clear" won't likely be an adequate defense to a jury.

You could most likely get a refund from Turo, they’re pretty good with that. This car is a POS. I don’t know how this car is on Turo, they usually don’t let stuff like this slide.

Do some more research. Ever heard of Toyota frame recalls? How about Honda transmission and timing chain recalls? Or the new Honda Accord electrical system problems? I never had a single issue other than rocker rust with my 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 4.7 Magnum v8, automatic transmission, with over 325,000 miles. Haul 5,000 to 7,000 lbs. daily with it for my landscape company as well. Just kept the trans. fluid changed every 40,000 miles, and oil every 5,000 and it just keeps running! Never let me down yet! Try getting that kind of reliable out of a Nissan Titan, Toyota Tundra, or the gay minivan Honda calls a truck without putting a lot of money into water pumps, timing belts, and dealing with a crap ton of frame rust. Really, I think the only other half ton pickup that could do it is Chevy or Gmc, but than again, never seen a 5.0 Ford with issues either!

Ever seen rural-route mail Jeeps? They are just a Wrangler with a right hand drive conversion most of the time, but most make it well over 300,000 miles with no issues. Also, the 2nd generation 4.7 V8 (2008 and up) are pretty good engines! I have a 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 with a 4.7 Magnum V8, with over 325,000 miles on it, and I haven’t done anything to the engine other than oil changes and spark plugs. Rock solid reliable vehicle still, and the 545rfe automatic transmission has been just as reliable! Just kept the fluid changed every 40,000 miles.

There are a lot of vehicles that are in great shape at the 100k mile mark. It really depends a lot on the owner and how they chose to maintain the vehicle. I've owned at least one car with 360k miles that was in better shape than that Jeep. Grand Maquis that had spent it's life in MI winters. It had some minor issues with clear coat and some small touchups on the hood from rock chips. It had some rust, but nothing major. Cars are amazingly robust when the owner has any pride in what they own.

Pretty sure when I checked they have a limit of 120k. Not sure if they ever follow up after a car is listed.

Back in 1981 or '82, when I was 11 or 12, the neighbors down the street who we used to carpool with got burglared and the thiefs stole their car out of the garage. They rented a car from a chain called Ugly Duckling which used some old cars. The car they got was a '77 Plymouth Fury ex-police car. It even had the holes filled in where the antenna was on the right side quarter panel and holes on the roof where the light bar was. It was very weak as well; definitely did not feel like a 440 (even a heavily smogged one). I do believe there is a market for renting out beat up cars, but not for $75/day.

The splitting seat is quite common as the WK jeeps get older. The "leather" seats is just the darker part in the middle of the seat, the rest is vinyl... for like a $3500 option it was a ripoff. The air fresheners were likely to combat a funky smell from the leaking sunroof that plagues these jeeps. The hood latch is just flat out poor owner maintenance, a short spray of lithium grease before winter every year will keep it working properly. The electronics exposed on the center console is the 4WD hi/low selector, I can't even fathom how that would be damaged like that.
I own a 2006 Grand Cherokee, I'm not surprised to see most of these issues. Great vehicles that don't age well when neglected. Mine has been pretty good for 130k miles but it's starting to show it's age.
