When we look back at the two women that have caused Tony Soprano with the most amount of stress, anxiety, and have just downright made his life a pain in the you know what... there's no denying it's his late mother Livia and his sister Janice. Now some would argue that this title belongs to his wife Carmela, but no, it's Livia and Janice. But what exactly made them so miserable, evil, and manipulative towards Tony? Livia and Janice were so eerily similar that they both haunted Tony right up until the series' finale episode. From Janice shooting her fiancé, tape recording him as a child, and always asking for money, to Tonys own mother attempting to assassinate him. But with all of these issues that are addressed throughout the series, who was worse?
Comment down below your thoughts about who you think was the more evil mobster was? Livia or Janice? Let me know down below! 👇🏻

I feel bad for Bobby's kids. This lady just bombarded into their lives, even against the entire family's wishes, and now that Bobby's dead they're stuck with her.
Bobby Jr is going to be hopeless
She does at least try towards the end of the show. But ya bobby Jr is fukt
Didn’t Bobby’s son go to his aunts? I thought it was Bobby’s daughter who was at risk since Janice wanted her girl to have a sister
That Janice would manipulate those kids with the online chat/ouija board-that scene made me want to vomit.
I feel worse for them than Vito’s kids
I think we all can agree that Barbara was the luckiest one. She had her own family, she wasn’t toxic and she survived the series.
How do we know she wasn’t toxic?
@@jgmediting7770she was barely present so that’s a start lol
Side note but the actress who played Janice did an absolutely phenomenal job with that character
An incredible performance imo
Yes! Aida Turturro- cousin of *John Turturro.
That's why people love or hate the characters. Precisely because they did a good job.
The series finale for The Sopranos should have been AJ and Janice being driven out to a cornfield and given the "casino treatment." That would have been a much better ending than what we received.
@@shrim1481 I can't imagine being so upset with fictional characters from over two decades ago. Take it easy.
Janice using Bobby was the most disgusting thing she ever did.
But Livia wanting Tony dead is unbeatable.
Initially she was using him but she clearly ended up caring about him a lot
fax@@PankHiggin
The way she swooped in on him after his wife died made her completely nonredeemable to me.
@@TheSolidSnakeOil Dude I'm sure Bobby wasn't even mad or had a problem with that you guys are just making her seem evil .. They hooked up when they were young aswell
@@PankHiggin when did Janice ever show that she cared about him outside of her own self interests?
Choosing between Livia and Janice is like choosing between different types of cancer
Stomach or toe
@@samanthalake5011 stomach and prostate
Breast cancer or melanoma 😭🤣
It's not a nursing home. It's a retirement community.
Janice absolutely wanted Tony dead in s2. Go back and watch all the scenes where she and Richie talk about him. Richie often tries to give Tony the benefit of the doubt but its Janice who makes him feel angry about the situations
Livia, at least Janice tries to change for the better.
Janice didn’t, she was faking it
Absolutely not. Janice 100 percent was trying to change for the better. As someone else mentioned the kitchen scene with Tony is the perfect example@@jakealter5504
Janice stole someone's prosthetic leg, that's low and she left her son and infiltrated a man's life. She's worse.
Livia is the worst because she molded her kids to be the way they were. Her trying to kill Tony was way worse than Janice killing abusive Richie, he earned that
Whereas Tony didn’t deserve the treatment he received from Livia
@@jakealter5504and Livia didn't deserve the treatment she got from Johnny Boy, the saint.
@@lambsauce5312 I disagree, they both deserved it. Johnny being terrible to livia is no excuse for livia being a monster to her children
@@jakealter5504 I didn't say that her abuse can be excused, I'm just saying the cycle of abuse, without Johnny she might've been a better mother despite her mental illness and the period in which she raised them
@@lambsauce5312 based on what we were told about how she was when she met Johnny, it’s unlikely she would have been better since she was broken before meeting and marrying him. Hell, she even prevented Johnny from trying to go legit when he mentioned wanting to move the family to Nevada
Livia by far. She made both Tony & Janice the way they are.
Yeah, Janice and Tony desperately tried to to unfuck the problems that Livia instilled in them. They both failed miserably, but still. Livia just steeped in her misery and never took accountability for a thing in her life.
Tony was right, if Livia had been born a man, she would have been the perfect boss. Because Sopranos has taught us that being an effective boss requires you to be the worst human being imaginable, which would be that horrid old lady.
She would’ve died before becoming boss, maybe a capo but not a boss
Tony and Janice loved power more than their own families.
I think the main reason Janice seems worse to a lot of people is that we simply had more time with her. The audience only sees Livia in action for 2 years (seasons), but there were years and years of her abuse and manipulation that took place before the show. Meanwhile, Janice was gone during a lot of that time, but she's in the show every season but the first. And also (as someone else mentioned), Livia MADE Tony and Janice the way they are (or at least had a big part in them being damaged)
No even a SHORT time can make you learn so much about a person lol Livia was NEVER a bad person. She just stuck around people who werent for her mentally.
@@KrisBryant99 I can see what you're saying...rarely are people all good or all bad, and those with mental/psychological illness aren't responsible for how they develop neurochemically. I feel like the seeds of personality disorder were there from the start and made much MUCH worse by the people around her, but in the end people make choices so she could have tried not to be such a black hole lol
Livia was Frankenstein; her oldest kids were her monsters.
Janice was more selfish but Livia was more spiteful and conniving. She held grudges against people like Tony putting her in a "nursing home" and played victim when she was called out on it. Janice I do think cared about people deep down like Bobby, Tony, her daughter and even Bobby's kids to some degree. Tony is arguably worse than both because he literally killed his own cousin "nephew" with his own two hands just so he wouldn't be a burden on him both financially and incase he ratted to the feds even though he came to T about Adriana being an FBI informant and how he treated Hesh who was basically an uncle to him.
It's a retirement community!
The Tony B incident was more of a kindness. When Phil got to him, it wouldn’t have been nearly as quick. That animal Blundetto was already dead, he killed the kid brother of a boss after all.
@@host_arnold6187killing his cousin (nephew) with his own 2 hands I think he was talking about Christopher not tony egg… I mean tony b
"She called Sophia her daughter!"
"I DON'T GIVE A FUCK!"
"..."
"Okay, I do a give a fuck."
@@shawnbbunbbbybbb3942 Yeah I meant Christopher. Tony B was a mercy killing and probably the least morally reprehensible murder Tony committed because he really didn't wanna do it but he knew Tony B would eventually get caught by Phil and tortured to death or get other members of the crew killed as retaliation. Chrissy's was cold blooded and the fact he had no remorse after for it just showed how evil Tony had become.
Idk if Janice would kill her own kids but Lyvia
Janice did try to kill her own brother tho
@@N_Wah_No. She schemed against him, but when Richie hinted about killing him she was against it
@@Lilyanna298no she wasn’t. It was the exact opposite. When Richie told Janice he did not get a favorable ruling on the decision to kill Tony, Janice was visibly angry and disappointed
Livia. She wanted to off her own son without zero remorse or guilt
Janice wanted to kill Tony too although she probably wanted to do it for the money unlike Livia
She gave her life to her children on a silva platta. She was a saint
Janice was trying to get Richie to kill Tony too! With zero remorse. And actually murdered someone unlike Livia.
@@CoreyT127as far as we know
Tony deserved it.
Pretty sure Janice was manipulating Richie to kill Tony. When Richie told Janice the decision went against him to kill Tony, she was visibly pissed off.
Without even watching I can say Livia because Janice atleast made attempts to become better and actually got better after going to therapy, which was why tony was so aggrivated by her and lashed out at her at dinner
It's weird that this got left out
Janice did not get better with therapy. She was just making her true self.
@@JGJGAGSGyes
i actually always felt that janice had a hand in richie's plan to whack tony. she was definitely leading him in that direction, if only subconsciously
Both characters we're terrible but have to go Livia she made everyone life a living hell
Pain caused to Tony
Janice: Financial Pain
Olivia: Emotional Pain
For the last time, it was a "retirement community!"
You're only "fatally shot" if you die from it. 😂
not true. dont argue bout somethin you dont know bout Cuzzy
fatally shot can also mean shot in a way that couldve very easily killed you or had you in very bad condition where you might not make it.

@@mas5658 Then it's not "fatal" dumb sht
@@mas5658fatally means ur dead just like fatality😂which means occurrence of death by accident, in war (gun shot) or from disease. So he’s right dummy
Livia wouldn't barge into my house uninvited.
Janice would.
Janice is worse.
I hated the fact that Janice presented herself as free-spirited, open-minded and liberal although she was actually manipulative, selfish, prejudicial, and racist. At least Livia was honest about her thoughts.
Excellent upload 😂
Janice was by far the best actor on the entire series, period.
Livia had mental issues and it unfortunately affected her kids. But as Janice said about her mom’s behavior, No one chooses that. Livia had mental issues and a father who wasn’t nice.
Janice willingly makes choices to benefit herself much like how she was raised to be. Anything to get her way. However, she did make legit attempts to improve herself and her life… even if sometimes it was manipulative. She swallowed her pride and took anger management classes for her family.
As u said Janice tried to improve her own personality disorder, that's why Livia was worse.
Janice only did it because Bobby gave her an ultimatum
I feel like any strides she would have made would have been temporary
Tony made it shorter, but she would have relapsed eventually
@@joergenmaster7530 it's not a case of relapsing, people with a personality disorder literally have a warped sense of things like love , anger etc usually because of childhood trauma from a parent with a personality disorder. We are always like this but like normal people we have good days and bad days too. Ours are just more extreme.
@@dc56789livia was also far more clever and cunning than Janice
@@joergenmaster7530that’s why she did it at first but she had a break through on her own .. until Tony saw it and sabotaged it lol
Janice stole someone's lyeg. But Livia tried to have her son clipped
Great video!! I’d love to see a Sopranos Theories dedicated to exploring how/why Tony + Janice’s estranged sister Barbara seems to be the most well adjusted of the trio. It almost seems impossible no?
Honestly, Livia takes this round simply because she was the Mother. But Janice isn't much better.
His mother was a bigger threat, his sister was just annoying and added to general stress (not actively dangerous).
Janice gave her one hell of a run for her money but still gotta go with Livia.
I would say Janice, she managed to get away from her family but still came back and ended up being even worse than her own mother.
Not including the fact that she had relations with Ralphie 🤢after Rou lost her son.
Manipulating bobby into feeling bad for grieving his wife and mother of his kids.
Constantly trying to make everyone feel sorry for her while being sneaky and looking for handouts.
Couldn't disagree more lol Livia tried to kill her own son, and Also helped create the damage within Tony and Janice
Who is worse? The woman who killed her physically abusive fiancé OR the woman who sanctioned a hit on her son (who didn't take the garbage out!)?
Tony was not fatally shot.
you have completely missed that Janice had manipulated Richie to kill Tony. There was a partials discussion about this when Janice and Richie were driving in a car. Janice talks about striking your opponent swiftly like the famous Chinese warrior. It is easy to find.
Plus I think that’s what was in her mind with Ralphie and later Bobby. It’s difficult to say since all three people are all dangerous.
Sun te zu?
She did kill her fiancé justifiable
Not justifiable
@@anon2427it was considering he had literally just punched her
Livia, no question. Janice was his sibling; Livia was his MUDDA!
Janice is definitely worse than Livia. Janice inherited Livia’s Borderline Personality Disorder so she also had issues forming attachments, it’s also why she is constantly “reinventing” herself, from hippie to born again Christian to stereotypical mob wife. What makes her worse though is that even though Livia did awful things to Tony, her hatred didn’t really extend pass him. Janice leeches on to anyone she possibly can if it means she doesn’t have to function properly and she leaves a trail of destruction in her path. There’s also the fact that her son doesn’t speak to her which means she must have done something awful to him as well, it’s just never revealed what. Both Livia and Janice are narcissists, but Janice is willing to use any method possible to get what she wants, regardless of the consequences.
Janice reminds me of Meghan Markle.
@@JGJGAGSG calm down, Piers Morgan
@@sterlingross919sorry that the truth bugs you
Janice completely played her therapist
This is a damn good question honestly
Bof are insufferable
Aida did a spectacular job of portraying a woman who would be the product of a demented personality like Livia. This means to me that neither is worse than the other, they are 2 sides of the same coin.
Like mother like daughter I would say Livia was evil
W0w you sound like Glen Grinwald. Nice channel too. Keep it up friendo.
Ohh poor you
You should do a crossover. Who was worse: Michael Corleone or Anthony Soprano??
Good question!! Also Michael because he had no guilt.
as someone with a sibling, nothing about janice’s relationship with tony seemed out of the ordinary. well, other than her shooting a man …
Definitely Livia.
If Tony was FATALLY SHOT by Junior, he would have died. That is what fatal means LOL
I'd say Livia, I don't think Janice actually hated Tony like his mother did
Livia for sure plus she was the most Realistic character in the whole show
What do you mean Livia is bad? She gave her kids her life on a silver platter.
Lucia was worse for sure
Livia is worse. Like Janice is annoying and scummy, but at least you can sort of accept some of it because it was her trying to claw her way upwards in life and if she did get to a place of financial stability maybe she would be tolerable. Livia on the other hand is just a black hole of misery for who the only joy in life is messing with other people. People who just mess with you for the joy of messing with you are potentially way more dangerous than regular con men because they just never stop.
I think both Janice and Livia were horrendous, but lets not forhet Livia was Janice's mother, as well as Tony and Barbara's. Barbara Soprano got lucky she didnt end up like either of her older siblings, but Tony and Janice, are the products of how they were raised by Livia, and of course Johnny Soprano.
Until David chase confirms it I still believe Livia didn't manipulate Tony's hit. She was legit delusional the entire series. People only subscribe to her knowing because it's more interesting to the show
For me, that scene after Tony gets shot and Livia and Jun are watching it on the news basically confirms that Livia knew what she was doing, or at least was aware of the "repercussions".
"How could this have happened?"
"You realize what this means, Olivia?!"
"My son got shot...and he got away."
As someone who worked in a second hand record shop for 10+ years, I can say with confidence that those records are absolutely worthless, when someone would bring that stuff in we'd never buy it because it's not worth the 5p they'd sell for to put the sticker on them, then we'd probably end up giving them away for free anyway cause nobody wants that shit
I would imagine the only way records could be of value is if they were still factory sealed and never played. I can see that being of value to a collector. But some old lady’s crates of records she’s had and been playing since the 40s… Most of them are probably damaged anyway, no?
@@Boobalopbop that's a big maybe, but still more than likely worthless. There were so so so many copies pressed and bought in that era that there's a surplus still around and barely anyone that buys it, if anyone. Most people who have them are looking to get rid of them, so even sealed you're looking at maybe 50p or £1 max if you're lucky enough to sell it to anyone else other than someone looking to just have records for decoration on a shelf or put it on their wall or something. 10p shitters as we'd call em. You're right they'd definitely be in pretty rough condition, never cleaned, as they were so common back then a lot of people didn't look after the well, especially when their kids usually got hold of them and tried to put them on scratching em up
@@haywoodjablomi2529 Daaaaaaamn. Not even worth the trip to the store 🤣
I think Livia was the worst....she created, and raised, Janice and Tony. Barb was the only remotely normal one. And she was smart enough to get OUT.
Janice knocked off Richie which was the best hit on the series, so she gets my props no matter how fucked up she was.
Tony was trying to sell Liv’s house, and Janice took down the sign.
They Were Both Terrible
The fact that we all hated these two so much shows what a great job Aida Turturro and Nancy Marchand did playing these roles.
Olivia was worse. She has mentally scarred Tony and tried to have him whacked twice. She also almost constantly guilt tripped him. Janice was bad but she had times when they showed they cared for one another. Also the whole cast of sopranos was spot on.
So you’re telling me women are the issue?
Janice was no different to Tony.
Livia, because Tony did not fantasize suffocating Janice with a pillow.
Livia was born in an era where depression was fun , so she has an excuse unlike Janice
Um akshually, Janice dated Aaron in Season 3. 🤓 For real though, great video!
We see how growing up in that house has affected tony and Janice and all the problems they have because of their parents and the way they were brought up but they never really showed their younger sister Barbara. She was in like one or 2 scenes and barely spoke so we really know nothing about her but she seems normal and not at all like Janice and tony and it doesn’t seem like she’s all messed up the way they r then again maybe she’s even worse then both of them and we just don’t know it. But I’d be really interested in finding out more about Barbara and seeing if maybe she was able to grow up to be completely normal with no problems like her siblings
Janice tried to get better. Tony didn’t like it.
Thanks videos please do more. I never knew why the fans hated Janice? I watch the series off and on. I thinking that if Tony S could have left at 18 years nothing was stopping him. Go College and move out not sure when the father died. Now you explain Janice behavior ok now I see it. I thinking that third child Barbara left Tony could left too.
Janice, she knew what life was like with her mom and chose to be this way
Livia. Its one thing to abandon your kid. Some kids are better off without parents that don’t want them… Its another thing to try to have your child killed. That’s a level of evil I have never seen and haven’t seen since.
Tony was already a murderer by that time…
Janice would never put a hit on Tony. Plus, Janice killing Ritchie is a big plus. Not to mention putting a beat down on a soccer mom.
What are you talking about?? She absolutely egged Richie on with pissing him off and wanting him to kill Tony and she was visibly angry and disappointed when Richie did not get the decision to have Tony killed in his favor.
@@JGJGAGSG wow . I think you're right. I kind of remember Janice pushing Ritchie to move on Tony now.
It’s obvious that it’s Livia. Without Livia, there wouldn’t be a Janice.
Too close to call. Both manipulated men to try to have Tony clipped. Livia w/ Junior and Janice w/ Richie ("you're the boss, it should be you"). How did she think Richie was going to make that happen? Just ask Tony to step down? Richie did go to Junior for permission to take Tony out. If I HAD to pick, I'd say Rising Damp 666 by a c**t hair.
Livia and Janice were the real OG’s. Livia had years and experience on her side, but Janice was even more cunning, so, in time, Janice would have been worse, but for the confines of the series, Livia was worse.
I think Livia is far worse too. No one has the kind of power that a mother does in your life. Those things cut deeper I think. Tony was always able to control Janet to a certain extent. She was just after money. Livia was just hateful.
I will never understand how a horrible lady like Janice managed to get so many lovers and a husband like Bobby.
Bobby was the only good relationship she had in the series, Richie and Ralph were monsters
Livia by far. At least with Janice you knew how to deal with her. Livia was unpredictable
Olivia was the worrrst bar none. At least Janice tried to contribute positively here and there.
Livia kept to herself. Janice was a loose cannon.
The best scene was Carmellas' meltdown after Livias' service. Then her father starts. That was great.
Who was worse for Tony, I’d say Livia
Who was worse for the viewers-Janice all day.
yes.
I was always so saddened to see how badly Janice treats and speaks to her own daughter in the final season. It's like you know exactly what that poor child is in for by the time she starts having her own independent thoughts. God, I can't stand Janice.
For the record Janice killed Ritchie because he punched her in the face. Otherwise she was quite pleasant! 😂
Tony wasn’t fatally shot. He survived.
What’s worse then trying to kill ur son 🤔🤔🤔
Livia by far she single handedly caused a War between Tony and Jnr manipulating both of them against each other which resulted in the death of Mikey those two black guys that other guy Tony shot on the boat she ruined Johnny's life when he tried to become more Legit putting him down she ruined Tony's life showing him no Love whatsoever despite Tony trying his hardest. Janice was bad but not Evil like her Mother. Lets not forget Livia spilt the beans on Tony burning down Artie's restaurant which nearly caused him to kill him.
Can someone remind me why everyone put their mothers into Green Grove?
To have meetings as Tony didn’t think the fbi would bug it.
David Chase says they auditioned over 100 actresses for Livia and almost gave up on the role. Nancy Marchand walked in and just became Livia.
I love how Uncle Junior always saw right through Janice. He knew that she was the one poisoning Richie's mind and that she used Carmela's lasagna n pretended it was hers to try n get close to Bobby.
Sadly Nancy Marchand passed away but had she not we would have seen her character Livia actually testify against Tony in those stolen airline tickets. In my opinion Livia was much worse. Although Janice was a pain in the ass Livia actually tried to have Tony killed and testified against Tony. What worse could someone do?
Livia no doubt
Without watching I’ll say Tony’s mum, she ordered a hit on him and was basically horrible to Tony blaming him for her failings and his fathers death
Don’t make me choose favorites, they’re both awful, but Livia is worse.
Janice. It isn't even a competition.
Livia!
Tony, Olivia and Janice were all just as bad as each other.
I feel like Janice and Livia are both equally evil, they have different ways being evil
