'Cloudstreet' is literary fiction, but has a majestic plot line, & is not obscure or overly complicated at all. It makes you believe in the goodness of people (in totally surprising & unexpected ways).
I highly recommend The Last Storytellers by Richard Hamilton. It's a collection of stories by traditional Moroccan storytellers, along with an overarching explanation of the rich tradition in Morocco. I read this while on honeymoon in Marrakesh and it's now one of my favorite collections of folk tales.
James K. Baxter is an incredible New Zealand poet. He is an amazing writer of place & celebrator of Maori culture (an early postcolonialist). And I would really recommend Tim Winton's 'Cloudstreet' from Australia. It is an incredible novel, tinged with magic realism, & wonderfully celebratory of Perth historical & cultural traditions. Winton's writing is majestic. He has such a way of finding glory & goodness in the gutter, really moving juxtapositions & character development. This is a really interesting project. I look forward to following more of your bookish adventures.

Thanks! I'll keep that in mind when I start looking for books from that region 😄
I think this is a splendid idea! I was already following you before I heard you talk about this project but now I'm invested in this series.
Thanks so much! I hope it’s something that people will get value from, and I’m excited to share about it 😊
