I love watching these types of videos myself. Would your husband consider doing a video with you talking about books?
Evicted is so good! I love non fiction, thanks for the inspiration!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I read Evicted when it first came out and it still - to this day- sits proudly on my top shelf and is one of my absolute all time favorites. It was very eye opening and taught me so much. Love it!
Absolutely! I’m looking forward to reading his more recent release as well. I imagine it will be just as eye-opening (and depressing).
@ oh! You just reminded me to research and put that on my tbr list. Thank you😃 and thank you for the video.
Evicted sounds like a read I need! Adding to my future reading. Thanks for talking about it!
Would definitely recommend!
Evicted was such a good book! I read it a few years ago and it was so influential in how I see housing. Elite Capture is going on my TBR right now. I'm reading Some People Need Killing right now and I can already tell it will be one of my favorite books. Really important reading!
[Apologies if this is a duplicate, but I think YT may have censored my first response because of the book title 😂] SPNK is also on my TBR. I’m looking forward to hearing what you think of it when you’re finished.
Excellent video. Loved your reviews. Very clear and detailed. Thanks.
Glad you liked them! ❤️
That was such an interesting video! I'd love for you to cover the celebrity side (musicians, writers, etc) of the topic too in another video. On the social movement/advocacy front, I've seen toxic behaviors in non-profits being basically covered up or volunteers exposed to such behaviors being told not to say anything about it or just not daring to speak up because it would "hurt the cause", which was a legitimate concern (but still terrible when it was used to keep people silent). I don't have anything smart or useful to say about it, I'm afraid ^^' I've just been struggling with that dilemma. There is also something even more shocking when people who publicly fight for a good cause also behave in terrible ways on other fronts - it's hard to reconcile, even if you acknowledge that everyone is flawed - there just are different levels of flawed! Don't meet your heroes, they say...
Yeah, absolutely agree with everything you've said. I think it's really hard when someone's job or image is associated with something morally good when they themselves are not are not exemplars of those or other related morals. I think to some degree people hate hypocrites more than unapologetically bad people. The lie or the perception of a lie adds insult to injury especially when it feels like admiring that person was part of your own identity.
I really liked Beach Read! It was the first contemporary romance I read and really made me realize that there can be well written romance books with deep themes and character development. I loved Beach Read and Funny Story by the same author.
That's definitely how I felt about it, too! It felt serious but in a way that was still accessible and familiar enough to feel like a romance. I'm looking forward to picking up more books by Emily Henry in the future 😊
Love the sweater!! I live in the same city as Brandon Sanderson and I’ve still never read any of his books. 😐 Great reviews!!
Thanks! ❤️ It’s nice to validate every now and then that even super popular books don’t necessarily speak to everyone 🤷♀️
@@TheKatBite I agree! Not every book is for every person. 😊
I'm planning to finally pick up Mistborn next month for a buddy read - I've also heard it recommended quite a bit and my husband really enjoyed it, so I hope I'll be in the same camp, but I think it was good to hear your review of it to bring my expectations down a bit. It's never good to have too high expectations, I often end up disappointed ^^'
I hope you love it. I always hope people have a good time with books even if I didn't. I don't think it was unenjoyable, but it's one of those books that's constantly hyped, and I find very few books live up to that kind of hype. As it's a series, I also think it has the potential to deliver more impact in later books, and I hope it does 🤞
It sometimes seems that famous or influential people are often in positions of power or influence precisely BECAUSE they have some kind of dark personality trait - some need to prove themselves or achieve glory. You can count on one hand the number of celebrities whose character seems unimpeachable - Keanu, Snoop Dogg, that's pretty much it haha. So you've touched on a really interesting contradiction in our culture - we often elevate the worst people. Maybe we're only interested in heroes if they're flawed. Thanks for making this video.
Yeah, it's an interesting kind of dynamic. I also think that public notoriety can sometimes bring out those more toxic traits as well. So even if you start out with good intentions, you can take love and support from fans as evidence that your actions are justified even when there's legitimate criticism.
I highly recommend The Last Storytellers by Richard Hamilton. It's a collection of stories by traditional Moroccan storytellers, along with an overarching explanation of the rich tradition in Morocco. I read this while on honeymoon in Marrakesh and it's now one of my favorite collections of folk tales.
Thanks! I'll keep that in mind when I start looking for books from that region 😄
Your reviews are Honestly helpful
Thank you! ❤️
The Libreria bookshop sounds so good! I need to check it out next time I'm in London! Ugh, I just find it so frustrating when books don't have a proper summary. They do that sometimes in France when they just put a short extract of the book on the back cover, but it still doesn't tell you what the book is about. That's usually a big no-no for me and deters me from buying it, but with the Penguin ones, it's a bit harder cause they usually have such interesting topics (but the one I bought, I did online based on someone's rec, so I knew already what they were about).
Yeah, that was the first time I’d gone there, and it was really cool! 😂 Whenever books don’t have a proper synopsis on the back (or inside), it’s either poor marketing or a power move. It must be nice to be such a well-known and respected author that people will buy your book from the title alone.
An Immense World sounds so fascinating! Adding it to my list!
It was amazing! Would definitely recommend 🥰
Ahah, I just finished A Fate Inked in Blood was soooo predictable! The foreshadowing was so obvious that the characters felt dumb at times for not putting 2 and 2 together... Yet, I still mostly enjoyed reading this book, so I'll also read the next one when it comes out I think. I don't personally rate books, but I always find it fascinating how other BookTubers do and like to understaind their reasoning/system ^^
I think that’s how I felt about A Fate Inked in Blood at some points as well. I’m hoping the next book will be a bit less predictable. Rating systems are always so fascinating because everyone does it differently, but often aggregated ratings are one of the key things people will use to decide to read a book. But they’re all so subjective, that they’re almost useless unless they’re coming from people whose tastes you’re familiar with.
I want to read more because there are SO MANY books I'm super excited about and that sound so compelling to me, and I want to get to as many of those as I can and scratch that itch in my brain! DNFing is the one most powerful thing to read more, at least for me!
😂 100% agree. Too many books, not enough time! I’ve got no time to push through books that aren’t giving me what I want.
That was such an interesting discussion! I love a beautiful edition, and there is a temptation to buy books just for the cover, but usually for me, I need to be interested in the book first and if the cover is pretty, that might be an additional nudge, but I don't think I've ever bought a book just for the aesthetics of it. I'm trying to be more mindful of the books I buy. Interestingly, this video got me both wanting to buy some special editions when I wasn't actively thinking of looking for them before AND reflecting on how I can prevent impulse buys in general...
I'm both glad and sorry that I managed to bring you along in my everyday dilemma with pretty books. I'm reasonably sure that I've never bought a book just because it was pretty, but there have definitely been a few that I wouldn't have bought at that moment had they not been special editions. I guess that's FOMO. I do think they're becoming more normalised though, and I wonder if that will help, because if I have a lot to choose from, maybe it will be easier to say no to ones where the story isn't immediately captivating 😅
@@TheKatBite Yeah, I think that would make sense. Also, if I wouldn't have bought the regular edition, then I won't buy the special one 🤷♀
I feel like I'm on two opposite ends of the spectrum in that regard. I'll either buy the special edition or I'll wait for the paperback to be released. I own almost zero standard hardbacks. I think that's probably proof that I'm a bit more swayed by the looks 😂
Some really good recs in there ^^ I really enjoyed An Enchantment of Ravens. I still need to get to A Dowry of Blood!
I was surprised with how much I ended up liking A Dowry of Blood. I was initially skeptical, but then I read it in about a day! 😂
Tiny dragons? That sounds just so lovely, I'd love to read a book with tiny dragons ^^
All dragons are good, but it's always nice to have travel-sized options 🐉
@@TheKatBite ahah, you could argue that big dragons are also travel-size: they're just the mode of transportation XD
@@Curious-Cat 😂Very true!
Those editions are so pretty 🤩
I have a weakness for pretty books 🥰
Don’t we all? 😂
Would you suggest me some powerful female characters for my college thesis
Not sure the angle you're going for, but Aelin from Throne of Glass, Nina from Six of Crows, Bree from Legendborn and Shae from Jade City would all be characters I considered "powerful" 😊
First comment ❤
The title Why Read sounds so good but, the way you’ve talked about it makes it a definite “no” for me. Difficult Women sounds great! Adding it to my list!!
😂 That’s what I thought when I saw it at the shop. Difficult Women was great! I thought it might feel a bit too familiar (like nothing new) but I was pleasantly surprised with the examples the author chose and the angle she took.
HELLO, hi! 🥰 I don't read too much non-fictions but I found that most non-fictions I've read, I've loved. I really love this video because I definitely need good recommendations! I thought you were so thorough with your synopsis of your book -- I really got a good feel about what each book was about and what might interest me. I'll be adding Difficult Women to my TBR list for when I am looking for a non-fiction. I really like the mindset you have about role-models. I recently finished The Immortal life of Henrietta Lacks and I enjoyed learning about what her cells have contributed to medicine today. Though I would like to say I didn't know how the author put herself in the book 100% but that's a different issue 😅When it was about Henrietta Lacks & her family, it was fairly well done.
Hi! Thanks so much! ❤️ The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks sounds interesting. I feel like I've seen that around, but now I'm adding it to my TBR ✅
I really enjoyed this video, and agree with you. Personally I’m a huge sucker for special editions. And yes I have multiple copies of some ( I know that’s excessive) I love me a pretty book! I do feel there are too many subs now, and the struggle is real. Being in Canada, I pay about $60-$70 per Special edition with exchange rate and shipping. That recently made me become more selective over which books I choose to purchase, as that money goes a lot further for regular editions! The other thing I have noticed recently is the lack of customer service with these book box companies. I have had multiple issues lately where my book arrived damaged, and they refused to do anything about it. Very disheartening after spending so much on a book. But they don’t care because they have a line of people just waiting to take your book subscription place. It’s so frustrating. Your video really resonated with me, and makes me want to cancel my subs. Then I can focus on buying more of what I want❤📚
Thanks so much for your comment! I absolutely agree with everything you’ve said. I wanted to highlight that struggle because I think a lot of people in the bookish space (especially people who read fantasy books) experience it. I also definitely get the country thing. I’m lucky that there are a few book subscriptions and retailers based in the UK where I live, but it’s really hard to resist US-only ones where shipping can be exorbitant 😩 I’m sorry to hear you had bad experiences with customer service. I’ve been lucky never to had a book badly damaged, but it’s always an anxiety, and I would be so devastated if that happened. I’ve heard some subs are really good with that sort of stuff but some obviously aren’t. I’m glad to hear the video resonated with you, and I hope it helps you make whatever the right choice is for you ❤️
I love non-fiction! I also feel like you can tell a lot about a person from what non-fiction books they read - what their interests are, what maybe some things they're struggling with, or questions they're trying to answer for themselves, etc. I would love to watch a video about that topic of the role model, that sounds super interesting!
Thank you so much ❤️ Definitely agree that you can tell so much about people from their non-fiction choices.
I love good nonfiction! I didn't need anything else on my TBR but I am adding Trespassers on the Roof of the World and Out of Steppe to the list!
That’s awesome to hear! Good choice, they were both really interesting 😃
Would you suggest me some feminist books ?
I actually have an upcoming video planned specifically for feminist book recs! But as a preview: Invisible Women by Caroline Criado Perez is awesome 👌
Thank you for re-confirming that I don’t want to read Powerless. 😂
😂 Glad to be of service
Really enjoyed hearing your answers to this one! 😊 I’ve got tags since months back that I haven’t gotten to, so don’t worry about that. You might be getting another one this week though, just a heads up 😅 I would love to read your book, and since you’re not into horror either, I feel it would be safe to try even for me 😊
Thanks so much for watching. Always happy to do a tag. It's so much fun seeing how everyone's answers differ (or are the same) 😂
@@TheKatBite I agree! 😊
Is sapiens interesting? Shall I read it ? Would you recommend it to me ?
Although it's on my shelf, I haven't read it. But I hear it's good 😊
What's your all time favourite gothic novel ?
I honestly haven’t read a ton of them, but probably A Dowry of Blood. Do you have a favourite?
Having special edition books are tempting .. instead of just sharing the special edition books you have , you shared a lot more information about that and educated a lot. Definitely learned something new on the month beginning ...
Special editions are definitely a temptation that takes a lot to resist, and I wanted to talk about the culture around them. Thanks so much for watching!
I wish I had more room for all the books I have. I only have a small bookshelf and a TBR cart holding my books. Most of them are in piles.
Definitely know how that feels. I didn’t buy physical books for years when living in previous flats because I didn’t have room for them.
Which is your most favourite book ? Definitely this video will add spice to my reading ... Thank you ❤
I couldn’t pick one favourite 🙈 Some of my favourites of the past few years though have been Six of Crows, Jade City and Throne of Glass. What about you? Do you have any all time favourite books?
@@TheKatBite exactly... Some of my favourites are midnight library , shatter me series , throne of glass (same pinch) and the monk who sold his Ferrari (non fiction)
Will you please suggest some (quick read) of your favourite books under 300 pages 👀
Hey! I don't have a ton of these because most of the books I read tend to be in the 300+ range, but two shorter and pretty quick ones that I remember liking were A Dowry of Blood by S.T. Gibson and Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett 😊
He’s published a lot of books for someone who complains about people not reading the “right” way. I’m not inclined to pick up one of his novels after hearing him whine. No, I don’t want to read Ulysses and I don’t think that people who do are better than those who don’t. Yes, I think people should try something outside their comfort zone every once in a while but it doesn’t need to be “high literature” to add value.
100% agree!
Recently addicted to your book reviews.....
Thank you! 🥰
'Cloudstreet' is literary fiction, but has a majestic plot line, & is not obscure or overly complicated at all. It makes you believe in the goodness of people (in totally surprising & unexpected ways).
James K. Baxter is an incredible New Zealand poet. He is an amazing writer of place & celebrator of Maori culture (an early postcolonialist). And I would really recommend Tim Winton's 'Cloudstreet' from Australia. It is an incredible novel, tinged with magic realism, & wonderfully celebratory of Perth historical & cultural traditions. Winton's writing is majestic. He has such a way of finding glory & goodness in the gutter, really moving juxtapositions & character development. This is a really interesting project. I look forward to following more of your bookish adventures.
Thanks very much for the recommendations! I’ll keep them in mind when I get to Australia and New Zealand 😊
I’m only 8 min in, I’m already frustrated with this guy! 😂 1. There are plenty of different reasons to read. 2. If he practiced what he preaches and actually stepped into someone else’s shows for one second, he would see that. 3. Why promote reading and then make it as annoying an unnecessarily complicated as possible to read what he writes? 4. Why teach “creative” writing if you’re so against genre fiction?! Let’s put a box and a belt on that creativity, shall we?! He seems like an arrogant man with a lot of ego. His kind have said more than enough already, it seems like that’s what he’s upset about. I don’t care though. Let someone else speak. I agree that everyone says it was better in their day. I think it’s mostly nostalgia. People have rose colored glasses on when it comes to their own memories, and can’t imagine that new kids experience the same things. It’s not even about the things themselves or whether they were good or bad, it’s about the feeling they had when watching, listening, reading, and connecting with their friends and family over it. A song that you danced to with your teenage bff is always going to be better than whatever music is made now. That’s what I think anyway. I’m just a woman though… CALM YOUR PANTS!!! 😂 Omg I’m so upset, how could you film this without screaming the entire time?! I’m probably just hysterical, never mind. Just the example of Ulysses bugs the hell out of me. I don’t need to know what it was like for some dude grieving his son and going on a pub crawl and jerking off on a beach. Those shoes are not interesting to me. I would much rather read stories by voices who haven’t been heard, whose experiences differ from mine in unimaginable ways. By people of color, by people from countries other than the UK or US, by indigenous people, by women - by all the kinds of people that have been silenced since the dawn of time by the old white men who wrote the so called classics! I’m so annoyed. THEY RUINED IT. Also, you are super articulate and easy to understand, without making anyone feel stupid. Thank you.
😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣 So glad (and kind of sorry) I managed to bring you with me into madness! It’s really hard because I think I got some of where he was coming from, but the thing that frustrated me the most was him moaning about no one wanting to read anything good anymore, but his definition of good seems to be technically difficult. I have absolutely no problem with those books existing and continuing to be written for people who want to read them, but that’s not everyone. The job of the author is to communicate their story/message effectively, but I felt like if it was actually his goal to encourage non-lit nerds to read more, he would have written in a more accessible manner 🙄
@@TheKatBite Haha you're good, I'm not hard to convince! I fall into madness all the time! 😅 Yeah, I get what you mean. The whole thing though of telling other people what to do and how to spend their time... If you're going to do that, you're going to have to lead by example. And it doesn't seem like he's doing a very good job of that. Or even making his point accessible, like you said. If he is aware of that problem, he is just showing his own stubbornness and stupidity by writing in that way. I'm not going to listen to him just because he writes, he needs to provide a reason for me to give any weight to his opinion, like anybody else. I don't care what he thinks about my reading or anyone else's. He can sit on his little branch high up in the tree and think he's really smart and good for doing "difficult" things (as if the rest of us aren't, like you talked about, world on fire, constant state of anxiety, etc) but he's going to be up there all alone. Or perhaps with the other ones who are just like him. While the rest of us go have some fun - or just try to survive. I really like reading literary fiction btw, but I can only handle so much while life is also hard. And shaming people for not reading exactly like you do, when you have no idea what they are going through. Barf. Over it. Thank you for letting me vent too haha I don't even know this person or his work except from this video! 😂 I'll keep an open mind though, if he can prove me wrong, I'm willing to listen!
recently finished the book that wouldn't burn & loved it! a lot of beautiful lines in the story - great haul ✨
Thanks! I’m definitely looking forward to reading it 😊
Interesting selection of non-fiction! I’ve only heard of Eve before out of these, but they all sound really good! I personally don’t have the mental capacity to read those kinds of books at the moment, but if I did, those seem like titles I would go for. Very interesting and important topics. And I would appreciate the shorter length as well! 😊 Just a thought, I think you could make it more clear that you got so many interesting nonfiction books on social issues in the title or thumbnail. You have so many cool books here and I think people would find you easier if it was more clear. Again, just a thought! 😊
Thanks so much! I was (obviously) super pleased with this bunch of books as well. Your feedback is absolutely valid. After uploading I was considering what I would add to the title to better communicate what was in it as I have such an eclectic array of books. I’ve updated now to pull out a few keywords that might be interesting to people 😅
@@TheKatBite I hope more people find it now 😊 Not that that’s all that matters, but you know. The video is there to be seen! 😊 I look forward to hearing your thoughts on these books when you’ve read them!
Such a stunning collection Omg!!! 🫶🏼
Thank you! ❤
"Underrated romantasy" is SO hit or miss! They're either really, really good or absolutely unreadable. Also "I'm not saying AI wrote this, but I'm saying AI easily could have written this" is my new favorite book burn.
I know, right? I love romantasy, and I’ve been reading both popular and less known ones, but there seems almost no way to predict the quality of the book without reading it because reviews are so subjective 😕
Great wrap up! I am adding A Darker Shade of Magic to my TBR. I don't read a ton of fantasy but you made it sound really interesting!
Thanks! So happy to hear that. It’s definitely a favourite, so I hope you enjoy it 😊
Well, I'm delighted to have found you! This is a lovely Booktube Newbie Tag. I hope you have a wonderful time here on BookTube.
Thanks very much!
This is so interesting!
Thanks! ❤️
I think this is a splendid idea! I was already following you before I heard you talk about this project but now I'm invested in this series.
Thanks so much! I hope it’s something that people will get value from, and I’m excited to share about it 😊
