Having special edition books are tempting .. instead of just sharing the special edition books you have , you shared a lot more information about that and educated a lot. Definitely learned something new on the month beginning ...
Special editions are definitely a temptation that takes a lot to resist, and I wanted to talk about the culture around them. Thanks so much for watching!
I really enjoyed this video, and agree with you. Personally I’m a huge sucker for special editions. And yes I have multiple copies of some ( I know that’s excessive) I love me a pretty book! I do feel there are too many subs now, and the struggle is real. Being in Canada, I pay about $60-$70 per Special edition with exchange rate and shipping. That recently made me become more selective over which books I choose to purchase, as that money goes a lot further for regular editions! The other thing I have noticed recently is the lack of customer service with these book box companies. I have had multiple issues lately where my book arrived damaged, and they refused to do anything about it. Very disheartening after spending so much on a book. But they don’t care because they have a line of people just waiting to take your book subscription place. It’s so frustrating. Your video really resonated with me, and makes me want to cancel my subs. Then I can focus on buying more of what I want❤📚
Thanks so much for your comment! I absolutely agree with everything you’ve said. I wanted to highlight that struggle because I think a lot of people in the bookish space (especially people who read fantasy books) experience it. I also definitely get the country thing. I’m lucky that there are a few book subscriptions and retailers based in the UK where I live, but it’s really hard to resist US-only ones where shipping can be exorbitant 😩 I’m sorry to hear you had bad experiences with customer service. I’ve been lucky never to had a book badly damaged, but it’s always an anxiety, and I would be so devastated if that happened. I’ve heard some subs are really good with that sort of stuff but some obviously aren’t. I’m glad to hear the video resonated with you, and I hope it helps you make whatever the right choice is for you ❤️
That was such an interesting discussion! I love a beautiful edition, and there is a temptation to buy books just for the cover, but usually for me, I need to be interested in the book first and if the cover is pretty, that might be an additional nudge, but I don't think I've ever bought a book just for the aesthetics of it. I'm trying to be more mindful of the books I buy. Interestingly, this video got me both wanting to buy some special editions when I wasn't actively thinking of looking for them before AND reflecting on how I can prevent impulse buys in general...
I'm both glad and sorry that I managed to bring you along in my everyday dilemma with pretty books. I'm reasonably sure that I've never bought a book just because it was pretty, but there have definitely been a few that I wouldn't have bought at that moment had they not been special editions. I guess that's FOMO. I do think they're becoming more normalised though, and I wonder if that will help, because if I have a lot to choose from, maybe it will be easier to say no to ones where the story isn't immediately captivating 😅
I feel like I'm on two opposite ends of the spectrum in that regard. I'll either buy the special edition or I'll wait for the paperback to be released. I own almost zero standard hardbacks. I think that's probably proof that I'm a bit more swayed by the looks 😂

@@TheKatBite Yeah, I think that would make sense. Also, if I wouldn't have bought the regular edition, then I won't buy the special one 🤷♀
