2020 Hike UPDATE!!! This video was shot weeks before I started my AT Hike & just published today. As of yesterday, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy has asked all Thru-Hikers to Postpone their hikes & for hikers already on the trail to get off. I made the decision to respect the ATC’s Wishes & respect the towns surrounding the trail by getting off & ending my hike for now. I’m currently at a friends house in Tennessee waiting to see what happens. Yesterday I released this information on my IG Account. Wow. What a tough call. I've been following several people who already started, and this surely has to come as a massive blow. Hate to see someone give up on their dream, but also hate to think of someone going from town to town and possibly spreading the virus.
It would be nice to see a video how you pack all of that in a 35 litter backpack. That is a lot for that size of a bag, and that's not even including food. I really enjoy your videos.
My exact thoughts. As a Ranger Qualified, Army Special Forces Soldier, I am obsessed with how pros like you pack all of that gear into a 35L pack. That is magic that we can all learn from! Keep up the awesome videos!

Yea! I'm wondering how you could haul 7-days worth of food if you needed to on top of all of the cold weather clothing? 2lbs of food a day times 7 + 2 liters of water (4.5 lbs) = 16.5lbs of food and water at a time... I love your videos. But, I can't imagine how you sort out your food and water plus your base weight in a 35l bag or any frameless bag for that matter.. If frameless bags are mostly rated for 20lb-25lb max loads then you are only 4 lbs away from that with a full load of food and water for 7 days. But, perhaps you don't do 7 day stints anymore? It seems like you do that because the PCT and AT have sections that are more than 100 miles long before you hit a town correct.. Sorry for all the questions. It just seems like you may have some sore shoulders and I would really hope that isn't the case!

I switched to single compartment roll top a few years back, and honestly I'll never go back. There are also a few videos out there that show how to pack a frameless pack.
I've built pillow by putting downjacked to the dry bag and after that I put it inside my fleece jacket. Works very well and no extra weight from separate pillow.
LOVE the flip top on the water bottle, I loved that on my thru! (I found out the hard way that if I didn't have this flip-top I could NOT for the life of me drink and walk at the same time. lol). -- Chica
Just did 15 miles with a 52lb ruck sack today, my legs are pasta but if you train heavy it definetly carries over for your lightweight makes it such a breeze, highly recommend
Shoutout to every hiker who had to postpone or end their trip early this year because of corona. You guys are taking responsibility! It's very sad thing but hopefully this will help flatten the curve and you can all get back on trail HEALTHY next year!!!
Suggestion: swap the "ass pad" for some Reflectix, cut to desired length. More versatile, cheaper & easier to replace. [1] laid out flat ... extra warmth under your core for sleeping; [2] folded once ... kneeling pad; [3] folded twice or more ... ass pad. Can also be used as a signaling device for attention / help. And if stuffed into your backpack, can be used as a stiffener and barrier from being poked by something. Folded around something, like food, it can help warm it ... as you already know 😉.

I am sure hoping your Peru and Great Divide trips don't get crushed too. That would realty sucks. I would love to see a video on and from the hikers who quit. Kinda of a I quit because I respect the trail. We could all send 15 sec clips for you to patch work together. The thing we all missed is the bonding that happens the first month or so on the trail. We met a lot of friends but the time was just to short. A shout out to all the hiker trash we meet along the way, we love you. . I am a little on the elderly side, ( 60 's ) and I'm not on facebook or instagram . I definitely don't want you to have to do more work, but I always look forward to and enjoy your videos.
Thanks for setting an example by leaving the trail per advice from the ATC and CDC. I ended my hike, for now, at Fontana Dam when I saw the writing on the wall and wanted to be home with family as the nation works through this crisis. I also would hate to be one of the thru hikers who. unknowingly spread the virus to the general population in trail communities, resulting in possible loss of life. You reach a large community of hikers and your example will save lives.

To be fair, most vlogs are delayed by 2-3 weeks. For example Nahamsha Hiker is back home already, and she posted a video from home about her decision to get off trail. But she will still be editing and posting vids of her AT hike for the next few weeks. It's possible that a bunch of the current hikers are already off. I can't imagine trying to resupply or taking a zero with everything being closed.

Good on you for taking this thing seriously. My wife is actually a critical care nurse educator at one of the largest county hospitals in the country (JFK was there, if that helps) and they are preparing for Spanish Flu kinds of response. The numbers are soaring in Italy and it's about to get a lot worse in Spain too. India and Africa are just starting to report cases, and if this virus takes off in either of those continents, it's going to be horrifically ugly. Italy basically told their population today that if you're 70+ and develop a serious illness from this virus, they may not have enough resources to help you. I was as big a cynic about this thing as anyone else when it started, but at this point, we need to do what's necessary to protect ourselves and our loved ones. My grandparents were asked to cram into a boat and dodge gunfire in the Pacific and European theaters of war. We're being asked to stay home, work remote, and spend more time streaming movies. It seems like a big ask until you put it in context. The trail will still be there in July when we're back to normal (hopefully). Take care of yourself and those you care about. Hopefully, the lesson we take away from this experience is our potential impact on the community around us. We can make seemingly limited sacrifices now to help prevent something bad, or we can be selfish and contribute to a health crisis beyond our comprehension. Thanks for setting a good example (as always).
I also have the the Alpaca hoodie. I have Enlightened equipment Hooded vest which I use in combination with hoodie and rain jacket. Keeps me plenty warm and I save 3 oz. I can also hike with the vest where the jacket is to warm.
Hey Darwin, I'm an American who lives in France. Get home to your wife. The US will go under quarantine just like Europe. Being stuck away from loved ones is not the way to go. I'm wishing you all the best. As always, thank you for your videos. They are inspiring.
We were starting a section of the AT in May. Not making any decisions yet. See what happens. Called Mountain crossing yesterday (love those folks) Their hostel is closed but the store is up and running as always. They are still getting a lot of hikers coming in and the shuttle drivers are still running.

Hi Darwin hope you are enjoying your time on the AT. I think gear videos are great. I just went and weighed my camera and kit after watching this vid. I picked up the pd capture clip the other day, its fantastic. I’m looking forward to getting out on the trail with it.

I can't say enough good things about the Victorinox classic; I probably use that thing 50 times per day, on and off trail. Once you try cutting your nails with the tiny scissors, you'll never go back to nail clippers.
I know you won't but it would be a good idea to carry a ferro rod. If you somehow got wet or cold ... You would be surprised how fast you hands won't work. I was on the AZT on February 2 - I started late and when I was heading up Millers peak I got into trouble - like right at the beginning of my hike - the wind was insane and it rained/sleeted and I was soaked and freezing somewhere over 8000 feet I believe. It got well into the low teens that night but I went from totally fine to life threatening situation way faster than one would expect. I had my fire pouch with me though and even though everything was soaked I was able to get a fire going using fatwood, knife, ferro rod. I couldn't work my lighter. I wasn't prepared for that kind of cold but once I had fire and of course put up my ZPacks tarp I knew I was going to be fine. I got dry and hunkered down. Soon as day break came I GTFO of there - hauled ass to lower elevation and I was fine. Granted I started late in the day and if I wasn't so late I never would have been there at that time but it was a real wakeup call. While on the AZ I heard someone had to be air lifted out and a couple weeks before I started I heard about some hiker who was killed and eaten by mountain lions you can Google it. So I'm just saying we all trying to have fun but shit can go south in a hurry. Be safe and watch your ass in Peru and if you a black dude with diamond teeth that's me so say hi. #peace ✊🏾
If I get a chance to listen to some music when on my hiking trips I always choose music like Delta Parole or Guns N Roses, the rawness is the best with nature.
Please keep in mind that electric power in Peru is 220 volts and there three different plug designs (two similar to the US, one quite different). You will probably need a plug adapter for some outlets and you should double check to be sure your chargers and related devices can auto adapt to the higher voltage.
Me too, this All-Paca™ Fleece Hoodie is a cozy piece of gear. However it’s not warm enough to serve as my mid layer on the trail. For the JMT I’ll be sticking with the Patagonia R1 hoodie.
You are a professional hiker. Your gear selection is appropriate. Please recommend gear for those Dads (e.g. family frugal) amongst of us who can 'only get out' for 16 nights per year :(
Yeah, the pandemic has messed up 99% of people's long trail trips this year. Pray for a vaccine by january. Very good gear choices and most are similar to mine. If I wanted a single wall Dyneema tent I'd get a Tarptent AEON Li but I like double wall tents so I have a TT Notch Li. I always use 2 hiking poles (Cascade Mountaineering CF poles) so they work with the Notch Li. Howsomever, I will never go to a frameless pack. My Osprey EXOS 58 pack is SO comfortable that it goes on all my 3 season backpacks.
Good for you getting off trail. It’s a tough year, My hikes for this year are also on hold, it sucks, but the only thing worse then picking up a bug in town would be the guy who brings one into town.

Well......I know you had your heart set on the AT......but last I checked......the Superior Hiking Trail is still open for business....it's a bit snowy up there right now, but in a few weeks it will start thawing out. It's a lot of miles of up and down, but the scenery is top notch:-).

Wow! Love this list of gear. It's incredible that all of that including camera gear is just over 13 pounds! 😮 For our thu-hike one day we're thinking of the Zpacks Duplex or Triplex for both of us. I'm surprised to see you wearing a hiking sneaker knowing how wet this hike is going to be I have a lite weight no insulation boots I wear through both low water and snow Walmart brand which keeps me warm as long as I have insulated socks
My PCT start is 3/25. The PCTA asked all to cancel or postpone the hike. I would mention the losses and gains in the planning, but I don't feel like being a real downer. Bright side, I got a whole bunch of cool gear that I really don't need, ugggghhhhh.
Would be great to see how you pack this along with food, gas canisters, etc. seems like food takes a huge part of a pack so hard to visualize what you do and where you put it.

Just something I have been wondering regarding the massage ball. So I guess my most pressing question is why couldn't a random stick or smooth rock substitute for the cork ball? The idea being that before you start looking for a campsite you pick up a stick or rock that can substitute as a massager. Another question I have is have you ever considered coring the ball so you can fit an UL item like a sewing kit or another form of fire starter? With some ingenuity I'm sure you could also incorporate a locking mechnaism so the inside can stay relatively dry in even the worst conditions, or just use duct tape.

I’m a single dad. My son is finally old enough to carry about 10 pounds for 3 or so miles a day. It’s rad. He’s a lucky kid. You have helped us nail down what and how to carry. I gotta ask though. Why don’t you ever use HMG? It’s made in America.. it’s way more durable and better made than competitors.. their community donations are going in all the right places..

All ur tent s are non free standing,,, here in AZ area do you have set up trouble on hard rock/ gravelly areas?? Whatt do you do to keep ur tent down on hard pack AND in some of our famous AZ down pours w/ 40 mph winds ???? I really want the Tarptent's ss2 but have never had a tent that wasn't free standing ( all B A tents ) cheer's b o w on the waiting n hopefully you'll rolling in no time 👍🏼😋😀🤩
In an older video you were talking about how you like to keep things "simple" and "functional" and "practical". To save weight and for multitasking purposes, I am thinking about using my NF puffy down jacket and my down pants, when I am on the AT instead of a sleeping bag during the colder months and when the temperature warms up, I can use it as a very comfortable down pillow. Would that be practical? Your videos are very informative - keep up the good work!
Just getting into hiking myself. I have that same camera with a 24-70 RF lens. I went on an 11 mile hike with that and the 30L peak design backpack. Super painful. I'm probably just out of shape.

Good on you for taking this thing seriously. My wife is actually a critical care nurse educator at one of the largest county hospitals in the country (JFK was there, if that helps) and they are preparing for Spanish Flu kinds of response. The numbers are soaring in Italy and it's about to get a lot worse in Spain too. India and Africa are just starting to report cases, and if this virus takes off in either of those continents, it's going to be horrifically ugly. Italy basically told their population today that if you're 70+ and develop a serious illness from this virus, they may not have enough resources to help you.
I was as big a cynic about this thing as anyone else when it started, but at this point, we need to do what's necessary to protect ourselves and our loved ones. My grandparents were asked to cram into a boat and dodge gunfire in the Pacific and European theaters of war. We're being asked to stay home, work remote, and spend more time streaming movies. It seems like a big ask until you put it in context.
The trail will still be there in July when we're back to normal (hopefully). Take care of yourself and those you care about. Hopefully, the lesson we take away from this experience is our potential impact on the community around us. We can make seemingly limited sacrifices now to help prevent something bad, or we can be selfish and contribute to a health crisis beyond our comprehension. Thanks for setting a good example (as always).
I also have the the Alpaca hoodie. I have Enlightened equipment Hooded vest which I use in combination with hoodie and rain jacket. Keeps me plenty warm and I save 3 oz. I can also hike with the vest where the jacket is to warm.
Hey Darwin, I'm an American who lives in France. Get home to your wife. The US will go under quarantine just like Europe. Being stuck away from loved ones is not the way to go. I'm wishing you all the best. As always, thank you for your videos. They are inspiring.
We were starting a section of the AT in May. Not making any decisions yet. See what happens. Called Mountain crossing yesterday (love those folks) Their hostel is closed but the store is up and running as always. They are still getting a lot of hikers coming in and the shuttle drivers are still running.

Hi Darwin hope you are enjoying your time on the AT. I think gear videos are great. I just went and weighed my camera and kit after watching this vid. I picked up the pd capture clip the other day, its fantastic. I’m looking forward to getting out on the trail with it.
I really hope you can go hike in the next weeks. Here in Italy the situation is drammatic, everyone have to stay safe at home... For self and for the safety of the whole community
I can't say enough good things about the Victorinox classic; I probably use that thing 50 times per day, on and off trail. Once you try cutting your nails with the tiny scissors, you'll never go back to nail clippers.

I know you won't but it would be a good idea to carry a ferro rod. If you somehow got wet or cold ... You would be surprised how fast you hands won't work. I was on the AZT on February 2 - I started late and when I was heading up Millers peak I got into trouble - like right at the beginning of my hike - the wind was insane and it rained/sleeted and I was soaked and freezing somewhere over 8000 feet I believe. It got well into the low teens that night but I went from totally fine to life threatening situation way faster than one would expect. I had my fire pouch with me though and even though everything was soaked I was able to get a fire going using fatwood, knife, ferro rod. I couldn't work my lighter. I wasn't prepared for that kind of cold but once I had fire and of course put up my ZPacks tarp I knew I was going to be fine. I got dry and hunkered down. Soon as day break came I GTFO of there - hauled ass to lower elevation and I was fine. Granted I started late in the day and if I wasn't so late I never would have been there at that time but it was a real wakeup call. While on the AZ I heard someone had to be air lifted out and a couple weeks before I started I heard about some hiker who was killed and eaten by mountain lions you can Google it. So I'm just saying we all trying to have fun but shit can go south in a hurry. Be safe and watch your ass in Peru and if you a black dude with diamond teeth that's me so say hi. #peace ✊🏾

If I get a chance to listen to some music when on my hiking trips I always choose music like Delta Parole or Guns N Roses, the rawness is the best with nature.

Please keep in mind that electric power in Peru is 220 volts and there three different plug designs (two similar to the US, one quite different). You will probably need a plug adapter for some outlets and you should double check to be sure your chargers and related devices can auto adapt to the higher voltage.
Me too, this All-Paca™ Fleece Hoodie is a cozy piece of gear. However it’s not warm enough to serve as my mid layer on the trail. For the JMT I’ll be sticking with the Patagonia R1 hoodie.
You are a professional hiker. Your gear selection is appropriate. Please recommend gear for those Dads (e.g. family frugal) amongst of us who can 'only get out' for 16 nights per year :(
Yeah, the pandemic has messed up 99% of people's long trail trips this year. Pray for a vaccine by january.
Very good gear choices and most are similar to mine. If I wanted a single wall Dyneema tent I'd get a Tarptent AEON Li but I like double wall tents so I have a TT Notch Li. I always use 2 hiking poles (Cascade Mountaineering CF poles) so they work with the Notch Li.
Howsomever, I will never go to a frameless pack. My Osprey EXOS 58 pack is SO comfortable that it goes on all my 3 season backpacks.
Good for you getting off trail. It’s a tough year, My hikes for this year are also on hold, it sucks, but the only thing worse then picking up a bug in town would be the guy who brings one into town.

Well......I know you had your heart set on the AT......but last I checked......the Superior Hiking Trail is still open for business....it's a bit snowy up there right now, but in a few weeks it will start thawing out. It's a lot of miles of up and down, but the scenery is top notch:-).
It's sad to know that you are (probably) off the AT already. I hope that the other hike plans for the year don't get too messed up. Stay well!

Wow! Love this list of gear. It's incredible that all of that including camera gear is just over 13 pounds! 😮 For our thu-hike one day we're thinking of the Zpacks Duplex or Triplex for both of us. We're 5'6" small build and wondering if the Triplex would be a better fit (or another trekking pole tent?). Thank you so much for all of the info you put out there!

I'm surprised to see you wearing a hiking sneaker knowing how wet this hike is going to be I have a lite weight no insulation boots I wear through both low water and snow Walmart brand which keeps me warm as long as I have insulated socks
My PCT start is 3/25. The PCTA asked all to cancel or postpone the hike. I would mention the losses and gains in the planning, but I don't feel like being a real downer. Bright side, I got a whole bunch of cool gear that I really don't need, ugggghhhhh.

Would be great to see how you pack this along with food, gas canisters, etc. seems like food takes a huge part of a pack so hard to visualize what you do and where you put it.

I also have a question why are the 1.5s your new favorite shoes? I’ve been thinking about getting a pair of altras but they all look the same to me and these seem like an older pair and was just wondering why you like them instead of the newer versions.

Just something I have been wondering regarding the massage ball. So I guess my most pressing question is why couldn't a random stick or smooth rock substitute for the cork ball? The idea being that before you start looking for a campsite you pick up a stick or rock that can substitute as a massager. Another question I have is have you ever considered coring the ball so you can fit an UL item like a sewing kit or another form of fire starter? With some ingenuity I'm sure you could also incorporate a locking mechnaism so the inside can stay relatively dry in even the worst conditions, or just use duct tape.

I’m a single dad. My son is finally old enough to carry about 10 pounds for 3 or so miles a day. It’s rad. He’s a lucky kid. You have helped us nail down what and how to carry. I gotta ask though. Why don’t you ever use HMG? It’s made in America.. it’s way more durable and better made than competitors.. their community donations are going in all the right places..

Not sure if you'll get to this but!!! All ur tent s are non free standing,,, here in AZ area do you have set up trouble on hard rock/ gravelly areas??

In an older video you were talking about how you like to keep things "simple" and "functional" and "practical".
To save weight and for multitasking purposes, I am thinking about using my NF puffy down jacket and my down pants, when I am on the AT instead of a sleeping bag during the colder months and when the temperature warms up, I can use it as a very comfortable down pillow. Would that be practical?

Just getting into hiking myself. I have that same camera with a 24-70 RF lens. I went on an 11 mile hike with that and the 30L peak design backpack. Super painful. I'm probably just out of shape.
