I replaced a rear leaf spring shackle on this truck cuz it rusted in two. Now a rusted out torsion bar. What next? Wait...don’t answer that. I don’t want to know. 😂
15 years and a couple hundred thousand miles later things do tend to break. Especially in states where road chemicals are thick every winter. At least it's not a Toyota; it still has a frame.
This was super informative! I am getting a clunk under my feet on the drivers side of my 2007 Sierra Classic. It had me baffled because I couldn't find out where it was coming from. This was the problem. Thank you!!!!
Love this! Wasn't sure what I was in for.. torsion bar mount snapped this morning and the noise scared me to death. glad its gonna be a cheap and easyish fix.
Just had the same thing happen to my 2002 silverado my mount is non-existent on one side🤣thanks for this video when i get the new mounts my noise will be gone thanks to you! I did my front shocks today because they were really old and i thought it was the culprit but the noise was still there just dampened so i decided to crawl back under and try to find if anything else was loose and the one side was just floating with no mount in sight😂
This video helped me replace my mount and better understand the torsion bar system. Thank you so much. Tough job for a novice mechanic like myself. But your vid got me through.
Great video. Using it to show my cousin how to fix his Silverado. I’m pretty sure your vehicle has already had those mounts replaced once already though. Normally the original OEM brackets are riveted in, not bolted.
Thank you. Been trying to take these keys out. Couldn’t figure out how and why the cross member bar wouldn’t drop. Been at it for days. I’m glad I didn’t go the other route and drop control arm
Thanks for the info. It seems like every video on torsion bar mounts are different. I'm doing a 2000 Escalade and the mounts are way different. Some are even riveted in.
Is it easy ? I have a 2000 cadillac escalade to some tide a rope on one side on mines before I got it I have to replace it should I replace both ? And aslo Is they front or rear I wanna order right tha part mines are located by fuel filter
Thank you that’s what I Gotta do to mine mine done the same thing yours did I just got this truck and that they broke rested I think you made it easier to figure out what to do explain it quick and easy but slow that I could understand what she was doing thank you again I described to you your channel
@@TheBearGrylz yes I did. I bought 3 inch wide by 3/16 steel plate and rebuilt the entire frame in that area. The repair spans about 3 feet of the frame. I fix breaks in the frames of railcars so I felt comfortable in doing it. I basically replacated the same style of patch I would use on a railcar but built it piece by piece on the truck frame. I followed all the same rules I would for a railcar, which is far more stringent.
Thanks for a good video got an 03 project yukon got my bars unloaded for ne keys thinking about pulling the whole mput clean it paint it and re bush it.
I got this same issue right now on my 88 single cab z71. Release brakes at a stop light hard enough u feel something move. I had someone drive and pump the brakes slowly rolling and I could see the right side of the torsion bar crossmember slightly move up and down 1/8”-1/2” My insolators are very old and original
Highly recommend using an air hammer for factory rivets. Not nearly enough room to hammer out with a punch. Using a multi tool with a carbide blade is 10x faster and a cleaner cut than a grinder.
Was looking through some old car manuals of my Dads “RIP POPS MISS YOU” anyway there was some writing referring to breaking rusty bolts loose. Goes like this mix acetone with brake fluid 50/50 in small spray bottle. Works on exhaust manifold bolts etc. I have been fighting a set of O2 sensors on my sons 2006 GMC SIEARRA 1500 4x4. Tried everything heat,CRC FREEZE IN A CAN. Nothing but skinned knuckles.spray it on that evening said you only need to wait bout 30mins but waited till morning sprayed all 1 more time when gathered 24”breaker bar BFH To be prepared put O2 socket on (I have the wrench)put my foot on frame and I shit you not single easy 1 handed pull and was loose all the rest same way. Later that day I had to go to the veteran’s graveyard Dads yurn is placed in a wall and ask him what he’ll POPS. HE was hard about things like IAM working on one of our race trucks and to point of swearing and throwing wrench’s just mine never His. He would just watch until I would go to him and ask for help he would walk over and finish what I could not in 3 to 5 mins that how I learned and pay close attention class was only open for that time if you had to ask more than once......well. He has been gone 10 yrs IAM 59 and I would give my arm for him to be a pain in my ass one more time. Didn’t mean to carry on thank you love your channel.
Would like to know how to get this driver side in on a regular cab. Your extended cab doesn’t have a cross member behind the torsion bars so it’s so much easier
Very helpful. Mine broke as well. 99 Silverado. But hey, the day it broke I heard loud banging like something was unwinding. This was while barely moving. What was that noise? It hasn’t made it since crosemember broke free from the frame mount. Was the torsion spring causing it to bang the frame? It was loud. Almost sounded like when a universal joint goes. But I checked those they are fine.
where do you get the main bolt that goes through the bushing ? are you saying your not supposed to use the old bolt that you accidently used the impact gun on ?
i had to grind the rivet heads off no i cant see the circle of the bolt where i grinded the head of ffff my life lol, i can see 1 and can fgind the other holes using the new bracket problem is i cant punch the thing out even with air chisel gun any ideas??
You should be really careful when doing it this way. You should remove the tension on the torsion bars as there a lot of load on them, if it lets go I promise you, you will not have a good day.Just be safe is all I'm saying. I think mine are going as well and hope to do my own. Cheers!
Great how to video. I'm lucky my 2000 chevy silverado still have the rivets and the passenger side is worn-out 😖. Probably won't be easy cutting the rivets off!! ✌
I did the same thing and now my cross member is slanted with the top side facing forward I feel like the polyurethane bushings or whatever they’re made of is to soft and therefore isn’t helping keep the rigidity it should have being that there new
Montana Cohn are you talking lining up the main bolt hole to connect the crossmember to the mount? You may need to use a pry bar to manipulate the crossbar a bit. I needed to do that because the crossmember got a little caught on the new mount.
Hello brother maybe you can answer a question for me. A friend gave me a pair of torsion bars he has no idea what type of truck they came off of but they are exactly the same length but are about twice as thick. would I be able to put them on my truck or would I have problems? Thanks
Truthfully, I don't know. I've heard of guys upgrading stock Silverado torsion bars with the heavier duty 2500 HD torsion bars. You may need to look at a truck forum online and see if somebody else out there has done it.
Hey I am replacing the torsion bar mount on drivers side and it’s the rivets I got the two on the side off but can’t get the ones on the bottom out should I drill them out?????
You are best successful by taking a die grider and cutting a x pattern in the head of the rivet and then a air hammer chisel and blaming it off. It's literally a 20 min job with the right tools.
Yes you are correct ,the factory mounted that with rivets. your heart was in the right place spraying shit on the frame but that bitch is rusted beyond caring
Hey I called Joliet Suspension and I asked what it would cost to replace them they told me $250 labor and $ 90.00 for wheel alignment my question is if I am just changing the mounts why do I have to get a wheel alignment ??? And anyone tell ???
If y’all were curious don’t drive it like this. Yeah the fuck it mentality works most the time but apparently my crossmember hit the abs controller so hard it snapped a brake line clean in half
Why didn’t they do this same c channel design for the suburban!!! It’s all square. I need to replace mine and mine are welded on too. WTF Chevy!! Now it has to go to a shop cause I don’t have a welder to weld the new ones back on.
All the trucks in that year range until now rust out. I'm beginning to think for those older ones it's everything to do with age. Which I guess should be obvious but it's taken me a long time to realize. I like the older trucks but they're probably not worth my time anymore.
Man that was easy I am still pounding on the bottom ribbit’s with a chisel and hammer 🔨 I guess I am going to try to heat them up and go from there ! What a pain in the butt and I have a very bad back there’s no one I can ask for help, I am disabled and do what I can just to save $250.00 labor! That’s what they want to do it
I replaced a rear leaf spring shackle on this truck cuz it rusted in two. Now a rusted out torsion bar. What next? Wait...don’t answer that. I don’t want to know. 😂
You must live in a 'salty state'.... i think that is where my truck came from, or it was never washed.
New England?
I'll let you know...I too own a GM rust truck ...I mean pick up truck .
Broken frame
15 years and a couple hundred thousand miles later things do tend to break. Especially in states where road chemicals are thick every winter. At least it's not a Toyota; it still has a frame.
It's nice to see someone who can work on a truck and not curse up a storm Thank you for your patience
This is how most of us work on our old trucks with Jacks and Jack stands on our backs we can't afford hydraulic ramps, love your video very realistic
This was super informative! I am getting a clunk under my feet on the drivers side of my 2007 Sierra Classic. It had me baffled because I couldn't find out where it was coming from. This was the problem. Thank you!!!!
Did you figure it out? I just started having that issue 06 tahoe

i live in northern michigan and this was a great video and very helpful
When he says Lou banging he ain't kidding😂😂 best vid I've seen on replacing them now I best be off to the part store to get my new one
JaysonPowell Vlogs happy repairs
My cat and I lol. Then the cat is walking around the truck like it's thinking about the project but probably thinking about a massage.
Excellent video . Job well done . Just replaced hub bearings and rotors on an 06 Colorado w 200 k miles on it. It sucked
Great thanks. Mounts . Brake lines and tranny lines. Thanks to the salt. Great video.
Thanks for sharing! My drivers torsion mount just broke yesterday and I didn’t know how to fix it. Nice to know I don’t have to remove the keys etc.
This video helped me replace my mount and better understand the torsion bar system. Thank you so much. Tough job for a novice mechanic like myself. But your vid got me through.
Awesome! Glad the video was helpful to you.
Thanks for posting your video and step by step instructions I got the same thing on my 2005 extended cab Chevy Silverado four-wheel-drive
Thanks for the video! I wasn’t sure if this could be replaced without removing the crossmember! Good information!
Love the leg trick with the jack. Just did that myself. Haha Great video.
Going have replace mine hope goes smooth as ones you put in
Thanks brother, this was very helpful and I think I can do this now.

Nice work. I wish i only had your problem. Along with needing new tortion mounts, my frame broke a few inches in front of the bracket.
Mine did the same thing man. I’m hoping to weld a new piece of steel in there. You ever fix it?
@@TheBearGrylz yes I did. I bought 3 inch wide by 3/16 steel plate and rebuilt the entire frame in that area. The repair spans about 3 feet of the frame.

rust sucks. i used to live in new york, and everything rusts. i definitely don’t miss that. i feel your pain
"This bolt is not breaking free....so Im gonna hav to grind it....dang it!" Hahaha feel your pain! Good work and great video!
Thanks 👍
Thanks for a good video got an 03 project yukon got my bars unloaded for ne keys thinking about pulling the whole mput clean it paint it and re bush it.
Hey can i get a link for this part please!
I got this same issue right now on my 88 single cab z71.
Release brakes at a stop light hard enough u feel something move. I had someone drive and pump the brakes slowly rolling and I could see the right side of the torsion bar crossmember slightly move up and down 1/8”-1/2”

Quicker to cut all heads off then just unscrew the one long bolt through the bushing
Exactly what I needed educated on , Thank you !
Great video Dan. Thanks for sharing your hard work.
Highly recommend using an air hammer for factory rivets. Not nearly enough room to hammer out with a punch. Using a multi tool with a carbide blade is 10x faster and a cleaner cut than a grinder.
Yep 👍 just got my parts. Now I have a good place to start.

Sorry about your loss. I may have to try that concoction. I’ve got some manifolds to remove in my future. Thanks for the info 👍
Your cat almost looks exactly like mine other than the white tip on the tail (but of course my cat is more handsome) lol
Thanks for the vid
Would like to know how to get this driver side in on a regular cab. Your extended cab doesn’t have a cross member behind the torsion bars so it’s so much easier
I have a 2006 Sierra with this issue. Thanks!
Nice job I have to do my 05
your underside is a lot cleaner than mine.. mine is very crusty and because of the amount of rust/rot, i have a fuel leak from the fuel filter.
Not sure if I caught torque specs for the 4 bolts to the frame?
Very informative. Thank You for sharing your hard work.

Thanks for this, made my day.... intro me and my cat....
@thedaninator i have a '97 with the same issue and cant find a single video on how to do it..... any suggestions please and thank you 😊
The leg on the Jack to raise it up while your watching what is going on. That’s the same thing I do.
Do you think driving the truck with the torsion bar broke will mess the front end up ? Or is dangerous?
Hey daninator, I did the same process and got it to the point of lowering the crossmember and it doesn’t line up. Any ideas on how to line them up?
Montana Cohn are you talking lining up the main bolt hole to connect the crossmember to the mount? You may need to use a pry bar to manipulate the crossbar a bit. I needed to do that because the crossmember got a little caught on the new mount.

Did your truck lean to that side cause it was broke. My truck is leaning I'm starting to think this may be my problem
I am doing the same thing, what size is the bolt size
With this generation Silverados/Sierras, 4x4 came with torsion bars, 2wd comes with large springs outside the front shocks.
Hey I am replacing the torsion bar mount on drivers side and it’s the rivets I got the two on the side off but can’t get the ones on the bottom out should I drill them out?????

Did you have to jack the truck up off the ground when doing this?
Do you know where I can get a replacement crossmember
Really helpful! Thanks. 👍
Only problem...
My cat wouldn’t help me.
Might want to get a kit and spray the underside of that truck with fluid film.
Thanks. I'm sure that's what I'm hearing!
I had 1999 Z71 that the frame rusted out on in that same spot truck was junk after that
To slow the rust or maybe stop it would be to oil a couple times a year. Rust is not just a GM thing.
Did this cause a shake while driving also?
I have the same issue with my 2006 silverado, except on mine, the torsion bar beat the shit out of the ABS pump, and knocked it off the frame.
Yes......mine too
Yes you are correct ,the factory mounted that with rivets. your heart was in the right place spraying shit on the frame but that bitch is rusted beyond caring

Better safe than sorry but theoretically moving the Torsion bars could tweak your alignment. Psst Firestone has lifetime alignment for like $160
I got the same issue in my 04 sierra... the metal clanking is annoying as hell...just ordered my parts yesterday
Can you please add the link for the part
Zinc plates and spray with rustcheck / oil to prevent rust. Lol
If y’all were curious don’t drive it like this. Yeah the fuck it mentality works most the time but apparently my crossmember hit the abs controller so hard it snapped a brake line clean in half
I know this video is old but the main idea of him taking of the bolts is that the bolt can’t be tight if it’s a liquid
Why didn’t they do this same c channel design for the suburban!!! It’s all square. I need to replace mine and mine are welded on too. WTF Chevy!! Now it has to go to a shop cause I don’t have a welder to weld the new ones back on.
Bolts can't be seized if they're liquid 😂🔥
Put that cat to work, time for the cat to pull its own weight.
...and get a haircut. LOL

I just did this on a suburban they are weld in and are a major bitch to cut out just a heads up for all the burbs out there
did you get a new truck?
I wish. It's my brother-in-law's truck.
I jut welded mine to the frame with some flat bar
How does it ride after u weld it to the frame?
Sound check.
Mine broke yesterday.
You didn't unload the torsion keys before jacking up the crossmember....that could be fatal
