    How about I say something like "i'll just charge my Switch with my iPad Pro" and watch the hate just spill into my mentions.
    But seriously the restrictions Nintendo put on what they allow to safely charge through completely defeats the purpose of USB-C being this universal solution.

    • @RaySchrantz
      @RaySchrantz 6 лет назад +45

      I agree, the whole reason we've never had a problem with Nintendo's portable consoles and people buying 3rd party chargers and accessories is because they had a proprietary port and standard charging requirements. Giving the switch the most modern and universal port made everyone excited because they thought that they could choose whatever 3rd party accessories that they wanted, but it was all a lie. Nintendo just decided to make things more complicated without telling us and then rolled out the 5.0 update to punish us for their oversights.

      I think it's quite the opposite of "shoddy design", more likely, the exact thing that NINTENDO wanted. They probably just saw the USB-C doing what they wanted to be able to do and used that, making their own standard to be used on the SWITCH.

      They do. The issue isn't a battery pack. When the Switch is in handheld mode, it conforms perfectly fine within USB-C standards. It only utilizes an unconventional draw when it is docked, which the Switch dock is specifically designed to handle. The problems emerged when people were buying unofficial third party docks (for the unobstructed profile) that didn't take a docked Switch's change in power standards into account.

    If I recall correctly, Anker is moving towards only putting one USB port on a portable battery pack because charging multiple devices at the same time increases the power output which
    1) Generates more heat which can warp and damage the pack and
    2) Reduces the overall battery lifespan (amount of charge it can hold, number of charge cycles).

      The Nintendo version is just a rebranding of the same powercore that you purchased. Same exact specs on both power banks. The powercore is the better value being it comes with the USB-C charger which retails at $30 alone. That charger charges the power bank itself much quicker than a standard wall charger.

    USB Type C to USB Type C cables don't have a 56k ohm resistor. Quoted from Ankers website FAQ - Are your cables equipped with 56K Ohm resistors?
    Only USB-C to USB-A cables and USB-C to Micro USB adapters are equipped with 56K Ohm resistors. Don't want people searching for a type c to type c cable with a 56k ohm resistor when they shouldn't exist. Great video btw :)

    Purchased a Ravpower 20,100mah battery pack to use w/ Switch. No issues w/ charging so far & got it at a great price too - $49.99 on Amazon. I used Switch while charging from battery bank. Also, just let the Switch charge in sleep mode or powered off. No issue! I would not connect it to the dock though, seems very risky. It would seem the best charge is w/ type-C on both ends of the cable.

    • @sniperfox47
      @sniperfox47 6 лет назад

      If the bank has a USB-A port it's totally safe. It'll just charge really slow. Make sure that you use a proper cable, not a cheapo one that ignores the spec.
      If the bank has a USB-C port without Power Delivery it'll just charge kinda slow.
      If the bank has a USB-C port and supports Power Delivery, then it is safe to use directly on the switch but is not safe to use through the dock and is super unsafe through third party docks.
      The reason is because the USB-C chip that they used in the dock garbles the power delivery messages between your charger and the switch, and the USB-C chip in the switch doesn't handle these messages properly unless they're from the official charger which does some weird stuff.
      They used a really early USB power delivery chip from before people started fixing the bugs, so despite the switches delay to market it inherited the issues of the early prototype USB-C devices.

    Bob, please consider the following to be some constructive criticism for the channel (lumped together with general information for other users here in the comments, of course). I don't dislike you, and I've taken care to write it as neutral as possible, so I hope you'll consider it. I think a lot of the information in this video is outdated and inaccurate. Or at the very least unclear. You say at 5:27 "if it's not safe (to use the USB-A IQ port) on this power bank, why isn't it safe on any of their other powerbanks?". It is. Their other powerbanks with USB-A IQ ports work fine with the Switch. You yourself state at 6:35 that you have in fact used those banks and they worked fine, which contradicts what you said at 5:27. Now, perhaps you meant to say "if it's not safe on this power bank, why does ANKER CLAIM it isn't safe on any of their other powerbanks?". That makes sense, as it's worded not a statement of fact, but rather is just restating something Anker said, whether that be true or false. That would be a much better way to say it... but that's not what you said.
    Additionally, my understanding is that in general, power banks are considered to be safe for Switch as long as they are reasonably well-made and conform to industry standards (not just Nintendo standards); that's based on resources like switchchargers (dot) com, and lots and lots of reddit threads, including major threads where users with the necessary hardware have tested and disassembled lots of power banks. Among surveyed reddit users with bricked Switches, no person has claimed to have been bricked by a charger; only by docks. At 0:23 you say "pretty much anything that isn't certified by Nintendo could potentially brick your Switch". Well, again, very unclear. In a very specific context you could say this is true. For an uninformed individual buying a random powerbank from some random site on the internet, yes, potentially ANYTHING they buy could brick, because they're buying blind. But really, it's false. There's tons of documented powerbanks which have been tested to work with the Switch, and are considered generally safe. The only argument for your side would be to say "you don't know if they'll be safe to use after every system update". True. So that's something I would caution people about, not just omit. "Certain power banks are safe, but there's no guarantee they're safe after major system updates" is more accurate than "any powerbank out there could brick your Switch". I would like to see you choose your words more carefully in these videos, or at least add qualifiers so people get the full story. I think this video makes the situation out to be a huge problem, when in reality it's very hard to find any person who can attest to having their Switch bricked by a charger/powerbank. Now, I can see that there's a bit of a ranting-type nature to the video, with you highlighting how unclear and problematic this situation is to the consumer; I hope you realize that as a viewer, you seem to be not criticizing/critiquing/explaining the confusion, but rather confirming/perpetuating it.
    To contrast that, here's how I personally would put it: "based on user reviews and teardowns, the Nintendo-branded Anker batteries' hardware does seem to be slightly optimized for Switch, however the biggest difference is likely on your psyche and your warranty; peace of mind for you that your the battery definitely will not damage your Switch for the life of the device, and the assurance that if it does, Nintendo cannot point to an unlicensed accessory as being YOUR FAULT. However, it is UNLIKELY that Anker's standard, non Nintendo-branded powerbanks are physically ANY LESS SAFE than the Nintendo-branded variety". Acknowledging that yes, there are benefits to the Nintendo-branded accessories, but still acknowledging that there is overwhelming evidence that says standardized powerbanks can be perfectly safe for the Switch and that rumors of chargers bricking switches seem thus far to be untrue.

    If it just tells you: "hey man, I can't charge" if it doesn't get sufficient volts or amps or just outright shuts down to protect itself then sure...
    but it literally getting bricked because your charger is too weak? At most that should fry your charger, not cause a *software* issue in the switch.
    What will happen if your switch tries to draw too much current from the charger is that the voltage will drop.
    This *may* get followed up by a voltage spike that would fry your switch (or phone for that matter) if it's a bad charger but that's something else than bricking the device by software.
    I simply cannot argue about Nintendo's motives being "to protect their customers" over "selling their own stuff".
    Imagine a phone getting software bricked because you lend out the charger that came with your Samsung to your friend who has a OnePlus...
    Heck, I own a Dell laptop that refuses to charge with HP chargers... it still works to power my laptop, it tells me the charger is "faulty" and will not charge my laptop.
    Yet, after almost 3 years of doing this, my laptop is still working fine.
    Do I risk frying it? absolutely but Dell doesn't brick my laptop because of it.

    Digital Foundry tested several other batteries, including an Anker that's not Nintendo branded and they do work. None of them have been reported to brick a Switch

    All you need to do to test the safety of a charger is to make sure it outputs 3.0 amps or more and that your cable has a 56ohm resistor installed. You can do this with a multimeter and some basic electronics knowledge. I use a generic battery I found at Walmart for $12(7500mA) it has a port that outputs 3.1A, and the official Nintendo switch pro controller cable(which, after testing, shows that it has a 56ohm resistor)

    The switch has worked with every USB-PD compliment charger and battery bank it's ever been tested on, so a few seconds in to the video and I already feel you're talking out your ass.
    What's that? Some affiliate links in the description?

    I have one of the unbranded Anker 20100mAh power banks, If you use the PD port with the switch, it will drain the battery from the switch and charge the power bank, So just stick to using the USB-A ports. Been using it to charge the Switch since it's release date, and have charged it while turned off and while i'm playing it, no issues.
    the power bank lives in my backpack to be used on all my devices. Handy having that second USB-A port :D

    I've been using numerous third party chargers and an old Easyacc Powerbank from 2015 to charge on the go. No problems whatsoever! Imho the main issue seems to be with the docks that act as a power supply and an AV output simulataneously.

    Confirmation that Nintendo rushed the Switch. Remember when Nintendo handhelds were indestructible? This time, it seems like they did an absolute piss poor job at testing it. I mean, how did they not catch the joycon desync problems with the early batches? And these power issues just stink of poor engineering. Seems like the rumoured Switch revision won't be a Switch pro or a switch mini, it will just be to fix all these problems Nintendo missed.

      @@Giliver Getting fried from a cheap usb cable doesn't sound indestructible to me. You can plug psvita slim into any micro usb charger and it does't fry. I've used many usb cables/chargers with various phones/tablets over the years and none of them have had any issue. Durability of electronics include more than drop resistance nowadays.
      If I was prone to conspiracy theories, I would think Nintendo did this on purpose to sell their ridiculously overpriced charger and officially branded battery packs (which I'm sure they get a cut of) but I don't think even Nintendo is that petty for a few nickles.

    I love how NIntendo didn't take responsibility for being partially responsible for the 5.0 debacle.
    I lost a LOT of faith in them. Still, to this day, i'm nervous about any firmware updates they offer.

    • @scarffoxandfriends9401
      @scarffoxandfriends9401 6 лет назад +12

      Because they aren't responsible for unknown outside products bricking the system. People also data mine the updates, there was nothing that would cause it from the firmware change. What most likely happened is people who bought the docks around the same time had their switches bricking around the same time as well.

    • @omsa
      @omsa 6 лет назад +1

      @@scarffoxandfriends9401 exactly. The docks and chargers people are using aren't theirs so it's not their problem. If you used an unlicensed third party thing than its that companies fault for making a bad dock, charger etc
