As a Vietnam Veteran the first time I heard Tight Rope I knew he was singing about guys like me and every freaking relationship we would ever have. I loved his music and still do, especially Out in the Woods. Thank you Elton John for bringing his career back to where it should have been in the first place. R.I.P. Leon, your music lives on through those who hear it, share it and bring new generations to your amazing talent.
Yes I love Elton John's generosity and loyalty. I have watched Leon Russell's introduction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame over and over. Bless you too, Lou, for your sacrifices.
I’m a dedicated, life long Leon fan! Heard him once and that was it! His special style is the kind you can shake your hips and bootie too…..throw your head back and howl at the moon! Love you Leon! Your out there Rockin away on that piano somewhere!!❤
First saw Leon in 1970 at the Fillmore East - it was love at first sight. Cannot tally how many times I saw him over the years - he took me to church each and every time RIP Leon - the Master of Time and Space
Leon Russel a musician of many unique and awesome talents!! I think anyone who plays piano will recognize how good he was at playing piano. I guess his mom was a pianist so he got the gift. That said he was paralyzed on his right side from birth trauma. His right hand was weak but he was one determined person. I see his daughter is recording now in The Church studio. She sings beautifully 😊
What I admire about him is that he never let go of his faith, he proved he wasn't prejudice and he just was kind and loving to everybody. We all have our own insecurities and he certainly had his but once on stage you'd never know. God bless his remaining family members.
I've seen Leon many times and I would consider him a gospel rock and roll piano player vocalist extraordinaire! He sang about love and he sang about the Lord because he knew the Lord loved rock and roll!
I was 4 when my mom bought the Leon Russell and the shelter people album. It was my favorite. His style was 2nd too none. Leon signed that same album for me when I saw him live before he died. I will miss you but I still got your music. Thanks brother.
@@jameskennedy721 I always felt it in Your Song (for me it's kinda similar to A Song For You), Mellow(Sweet Emily), Honky Cat(has similar beat to Shootout On Plantation) and some others, but I can't remember right now IMO.
GREAT clip!!! Many thanks from this lifetime Leon fan! I first saw him when I was 15, in 1973 and have seen him many many times since. Can't get enough of his danged good stuff!
By far my favorite performance of Shootout, I saw this as a kid and wondered where it was, now that I have found it, I not only feel better; but my life is near complete. Leon speaks!
This is fantastic! I've never seen Shootout At The Plantation performed live until now. The song is only like a year old at this point. Very Very Good performance! Thanks so much for posting! What a great bunch of musicians. Too Cool.
Funny I heard he did a short tour with Billy Preston but Leon must have forgotten. In an interview, he said he only played with Billy at CFB and had thought of doing more with him but never got around to it. Well he played with so many...
Me too!! You took the words out of my mouth. I read that he loved classical music. Would have loved to find a video of him playing classical. Gosh,do I miss this man!
+Carol Napolitano........and beautiful eyes, beautiful lips and beautiful hands..... The day God was giving out looks, Leon was definately at the front of the Queue !!!
Thank you so much for this! I've enjoyed listening to this concert, but it's so much better to have visuals! I look forward to seeing more. I appreciate you posting this!!
Saw him live in Liverpool in 1971. He wore that same jacket. I went out the next day and bought one. Got my girlfriend to sew the yellow band around the edge..Loved it. Loved him. Always will..
Saw him with the Isley Bros. on stage, outside in Arizona at a theme park ...Big Surf. Leon had beer cans around his sombreo , when the Bros. begged him to soft shoe shuffle with them...Leon just smiled and kept bangin on the 88's
very nice . who are the rest of the band? Please post more. Had the *Extreme* pleasure of seeing him at the Sunshine Music fest in St Pete before he died. From where I was I could see part of the backstage area. Leon came up in a hover around, needed a cane to get to the back of the stage. I thought this was going to be kind of sad. He sat behind the piano and blew everybody away!! he played like it was 1969, and his voice was awesome. Had not lost a thing. highlight of the show for me was just Leon and the piano he played His Eye is on the Sparrow, and meant every word. RIP
Chuck Blackwell on drums, and pretty sure that's Carl Radle [of Derek and the Dominoes fame] on bass...sorry that's all I got though if you Google Leon Russell / Shelter people you may be able to identify the others...
"Bobby "Whiplash" Whitlock, who played on this album, says the Plantation was a house in the San Fernado Valley area, in California: "I used to live at the Plantation - remember the song, 'Shoot-out at the Plantation' that Leon Russell wrote? There was 13 of us: 'Indian Ed' Davis, Jimmy Karstein; there was a bunch of us living in this house in California." "The song is about a jealous boyfriend, a 'Jimmy Markham’ who showed up at a party at the Plantation loud & drunk. Taj Mahal’s drummer Chuck Blackwell who was in bed with Jimmy’s girl. Jimmy began to carry on, waking up the ‘Colonel’ (probably the home owner). From the top of the stairs, the Colonel basically told Jimmy to shut up saying girls are not for fightin. When Jimmy wouldn’t stop the Colonel left and re-appeared naked wearing a 38 and proceeded to start shooting down at Jimmy, who had hidden behind some bongo drums. Jimmy took off uninjured - although the drums had holes. Note also: Davis was in the concert for Bangldesh''. - Robert, Tulsa, OK
The Shelter People guitarist blew Clapton off the stage at the Bangladesh benefit . I cant understand why Leon found a new band later . They complemented his music perfectly .
I think it’s the same guy who played on Dave Mason’s Alone Together. And when the Shelter People came to London and Clapton suddenly appeared on stage at the Rainbow to jam, nobody noticed.
@@AFaceintheCrowd01 I see 2 guitarists listed on the Leon album who might have toured with the Shelter People . You can hear Leon on ALONE TOGEATHER . Im pretty vague on second guitarists on board for that album . I remember Steve Winwood's great playing .
Underwwraps2 - have you seen additional footage of this entire video? I would love to see it all! At least the second song they're getting into when the video ends. Thank you for posting this!
The entire show does exist. I believe it is about an hour long. It was recorded for a TV show. Pretty fucking good music. Sort of left off after the "Mad Dogs and Englishman" tour with Joe Cocker the previous year.
Carl Radle on bass, Bobby Whitlock on keyboards (?), is that Chris Stanton on guitar? I saw Leon about the same time in VA. I remember his hair was shorter and wondered where he was at the start,
Yes, Carl Radle on bass, but no, not Bobby Whitlock on Hammond (I don't know who it is in this clip - after Derek & the Dominos, Whitlock went solo, not with Leon). That's Chuck Blackwell on the drums and the lead guitarist is not Chris Stainton (who was originally a bassist - that's what he played on Cocker's 'Help From My Friends - before moving to piano), but is Don Preston, who was on the album 'Leon Russell & The Shelter People'.
My dad, Chuck Blackwell on drums :)
How is your dad?
I have been telling many Drummers about your dad , he plays a certain way very special drummer and way under rated IMO
Dads doing good. Still playing from time to time. He just had a birthday last week.
how fuckin cool is that?? thanks for sharing man.

Shout out to Carl Radle that bass is epic!!
Leon never ceases to amaze me!!!!
Fantastic Leon! Thank you!
This is wonderful. Thank you. I don't think I've ever seen Leon Russell with a haircut before 1960...
Every time you hear Leon Russell you can clearly see how Elton John got his inspiration. Two great performers.
I dont hear much influence . Maybe on SATERDAY NIGHTS ALL RIGHT .

Leon sure had a way with words, something like 3000 songs he recorded in his life, few can even aspire to accomplish such in a life.
everything is so amazing in this song! Thank You Leon Russel and CO!
Damn. Been so long since i heard this, had forgotten all about it. Thanks for the memories.
