I have learned how to make a traditional leather dye as well. It is very simple. White vinegar and steel wool. Just fill a large jar with white vinegar and add a bunch of steel wool or iron nails, or evens cap bits of iron or steel. Leave for a week. It makes a weak acid solution that will make a tradition finish on veg tanned leather especially. It will darken chrome tan as well, but experiment. To dye leather I use a bowl for straps and small items. Just run it through. It will turn black very soon. Then put it into a solution of water with bicarbonate of soda. Wait until the leather stops bubbling. Rinse in cold water and remove excess water. Wear gloves to avoid staining your hands. Large pieces of leather can be stained by using sheepskin scraps. After allowing to dry condition the leather. I use Fiebings saddle soap. Neats foot oil is also good. Work the leather a bit to get it supple before making anything. The color is a blue black, not the true black you get from modern dyes. Very cheap and easy. It does evaporate fairly quickly. Do not store in metal containers, the acid will eat it. Use glass or plastic containers.
I have always wanted to do leather work since being a girl guide in 1968 when I made a purse. Not done much since except repairing 10 inches of my husband's briefcase in 1983 so skills learned are never a waste of time. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks Jo, very interesting. I find there are as many answers to the next question as there are leatherworkers, but can I ask what additional finishes/techniques do you use to keep tyour edges intact in the face of normal wear and tear, and to ensure the colour stays where it is? Or if the answer is too complicated, any chance of a video on this please?
1)Will synthetic resin adhesive work good with powder dye? 2)Or we can use school glue or craft glue? Wallpaper glue is same as school glue? 3)Will cmc powder work good with powder dye for LEATHER stain?
Hey Vipindas, I haven't used this method with a different glue personally. I know that people have used pearl glue before but as I said I have only used the wallpaper adhesive flakes.
Hi Joe just wondering, would you use this as a general stain on natural veg tan or is this specifically for edges, probably a daft question but if you don’t ask.... Thanks for entertaining and educating us at the same time, not easy!
Hey Brocky, I don't use natural hides, so I haven't personally tried to use this stain in that way. I would have thought it would be OK as you can get water based dyes for that purpose but, like I said I have not tried it myself.
Hi Andy, I use it alot on the veg tanned distressed shoulders from Metropolitan and it works beautifully. Obvs if you are using a dark stain on a light hide youd need to be careful. Jo
@@andypandy6830 I think it depends on what glue you use and how you store it. I've never had an issue with the mix I use and it I store it in old jars. I generally make up large pots at a time like in the video and then I usually just add to them as they get low. Jo
Hey Daryl, I don't really use un dyed leather so I've not texted how well this would work I'm afraid. I would expect it to be OK but can't say for sure. Jo
@@JHLeather Hi Jo, thanks for your prompt reply, i'm just ordering some dyes from Abbey. I will try it on a few sample pieces and see how it turns out cheers. Daryl
Hiya, I very rarely make stain and have never had any go off. I can't remember the last time I made any.... I have a friend who kept a jar of golden brown stain going for years, she just kept adding to it as she needed.
Hiya, just tested the link for the powder and it worked fine for me.... The powder dye is from Abbey England, you can search for it on their website. Jo
Hi there, I use the stain cloth to polish the edges of my work. Lots of people use wooden slickers but I don't find I need one. The aim is to create friction to make the edges nice and shiny. The cloth I use is Irish linen that I got from Abbey England
@@JHLeather i see... Interesting! Sometimes i see others using cloth as well and i am just confused. Thank you for the quick replies! Your videos are very educational :)

This is called vinegaroon.
Good
You can do the same with PVA glue (I use Titebond wood glue) as well. If you do, simple hot tap water is enough to dissolve it.
Many thanks - well paced and clear.
Glad it was helpful 👍
True living on the edge 😉
Thank you soo much, i made it today and it works amazing.
That's great 👍🙂

Hiya, I sometimes use acrylic resolene as a finishing touch on the edges but that's all.
I really love these projects, How can i Get leather work tools For beginning on my own projects in Tanzania.
on-line, Ebay would be a good bet Some suppliers do not mail to certain countries though, so I would check.
Amazon... 60$ and you get almost everything... also depends if your looking into veg tan ,chrome or both
just for edge painting or can the whole skin layer be dyed
I buy finished hides so have not been able to test this stain as a finish for the whole skin I'm afraid.
thanks to all diy
I think I lucked out here... I've lots of tattoo ink for pigmentation and I can only find a black edge dye at my leather craft
Do you have video on how to make your own leather paint? Thanks

Where can I find this in the USA? All I find are Rit dye.
Hiya, unfortunately I'm not based in the USA but I know Abbey ship to the USA.
Go to any large chain hardware store and buy bricklayers or concrete oxide powder. You can get it in different colours. Mix as Jo has described.
@@andrewbarra4992 Any type of wallpaper adhesive mixed with dye powder will do the job? Must be paste or any adhesive powder will work?
That stain is use for furniture?
any idea what kind of Dyes these are?
I shall ask Abbey and see what they say....
@@JHLeather Did you ever find out what kind of pigments they are?

Hello, please write the materials used? I did not notice in the video
I ordered black. You said it comes with glue flakes. Do I still need to add the wallpaper paste to it?
I still add some yes, but it's not 100% necessary with the black
what's the name of the glue MA? Thank you MA. Please, hope it won't go off, if touch by water
Its wallpaper flakes, as long as you keep your stain in a suitable container it won't go off
Thank you
But what is the name of that dirt-like material?
What is the name of the glue that is mixed with that substance?
Where can I buy them from?
Its powder dye that can be purchased from Abbey England. The glue is wall paper flakes that you can get at most hardware stores.
J.h leather - can you please tell me the name of those 3 dirt like material??
does it stain your hands? i recall ordinary stains wont come of for weeks
These ones arent as bad as most, generally if you wash your hair the stain comes off 👍 lol
@@JHLeather ppl made me some strange looks in the past. but now plastic gloves are available for free almost everywhere..
@@JHLeather i do like that you have a good portionof saddlery in your channel
Plz tell me about the name or type of glue that is used in this case
It's wallpaper paste in flake form
Can this be used for chrome tanned? If not, do you have any recommendations for finishing chrome tanned leather?
Hiya, I don't really use much in the way of chrome tanned leather. I did use it on a chrome buffalo hide once and didn't have an issue with it.
@@JHLeather Thank you for your response. I will give this a try.
Can any glue aside from flake glue be used?

Would this be the same stain cobblers use to stain shoe uppers?
I am not sure on that one I am afraid.
What type of glue do you use?
I use wallpaper flakes in my stain making
How long will a jar of the mix stay usable. Does the wallpaper paste “set” and make it un usable?
Hiya, I very rarely make stain and have never had any go off. I can't remember the last time I made any.... I have a friend who kept a jar of golden brown stain going for years, she just kept adding to it as she needed.
J.H.Leather thank you so if it thickens over time just add a bit more water
Yeah, usually it'll thicken up in the first few hrs then will just stay that way unless you add more glue flakes
Hi Jo, love your videos! In a number of them you use a glue pot, can I ask what glue you use in them?
Thanks Leigh 😀 I use Bostik 6092 contact adhesive 👍
Powder name please
Its just called powder dye, I get it from Abbey England
What kind of gum did you use??
The adhesive is wallpaper flakes👍
the link for powder - doesn't work. what the powder is it? Thank you!

It's wall paper paste. I like the flakes best for stain making. 👍
what solvent is used to dissolve the paint powder?
The mix is just powder, glue and water
Ma, please the glue, is it contact adhesive or shoe glue?
How can I make thinner my edge paint value
You can add some more water to the mix to get it thinner.

I have never had an issues with it.

I can't quite see the image could you get in much closer. sarcasm intended.
Thanks for that, how long will this keep
