    So, if you look at the manufacturer's instructions in most of those edge paints, it usually says as a last step: "if you want a shiny edge add a layer of clear gloss finish". I've watched maybe 10 videos from different people and nobody does that. Well, I do, and it works great. Tried it first on my own wallet and the edge it's still glossy after 3 years of heavy use.

    The most wonderful t edge paint I have come across comes from a company called Giadini and is easily available on the intenrt. Everything is non solvent based, water thinkable and cleanable, is mixable and comes in a huge range of colours and finishes and also several sizes.. I am a bespoke handsewn Leather handbag and luggage maker and am not associated with the Giardini company in any way other than having spent years attempting to find a decent edge paint since a time when the only option was Fiebling's Edge Kote. Personally I like to use the mesh roller pens but as said, this is a matter of personal preference. 10 years ago the choice was between a toothpick, a cocktail stick or a cotton bud on a stick so I am very pleased life has moved on.

    Great stuff Jo - have you tried running a hot iron along the edge to help smooth it. I have had some good results with Uniters primer/filler as a base coat too. They do a Briilantante seal coat which is perhaps not one for the purists out there but it is very very shiny! Perhaps some mixing play time for me is called for………

    One tip to speed up drying time and for getting smooth layers is to skin the freshly painted layer with either a blow dryer or a heat gun for about 3 minutes before setting aside to dry completely.

    Oh yes the patience is what I struggle most with too.
    And I am currently using my scratch Awl to apply with.
    Have seen some here on RUclips using a tiny bit of magic-sponge as an application method as well.

    Jo. A year late but finally caught your video. It made me smile to realize you came to edge paint the same way I did (pesky chrome tan leather😝.) I had an entire side of chrome tanned bison hide and it gave me nothing but trouble to edge burnish. (long sigh.) I too found it easier to apply acrylics with a steel wand (better control especially on fine edges.) I was wondering if you tried Uniters recommended primer? I've found it really seems to smooth edges and brighten all the lighter colors. It also basically replaces the first coat. Your thoughts on the Uniters glazes? Cheers! 🍺

    Hola. Felicidades por el video. Como sugerencia para acelerar el tiempo de secado de la pintura es usar una "pistola de calor" o una "pistola para decapar" pintura, da mucho calor con poco aire y eso viene bien. Gracias por compartir. :)

    How flexible is the finish? I've not looked at edge painting at all since it always struck me that if it was on an edge that has to bend then it would crack.
    Had a look at the Uniters and it says it's water based - does that mean it's acrylic?

    • @JHLeather
      @JHLeather  2 года назад +1

    Good video, and thorough descriptions. Have you done any videos talking about using the electric creaser machine to heat the edge paint? I am a leather crafter also but trying to transition from hobby to small business currently as my local area is prime for these products.

    • @JHLeather
      @JHLeather  Год назад +1

      Heya, I don't have an electric creasing machine, but you can heat one on a crease heater and do it that way, there is a bit more guess work involved though as you don't have manual control of how hot the creaser gets.
