This is not a sports competition. There is no ego. Each musician is doing his very best to make the sound richer, this music comes from the divinity! Make no mistake, these musicians are all very humble and they have tremendous class and respect when dealing with each other. There is something bigger at work here. People who make such comments simply didn't get this art.
exactly. we can look at it this way: herbie does smething great in that solo, but the solo could not have ever existed without jobim's magnificent composition.
i love how everyone has an additive effect. herbie's solo builds on the preexisting feel without etracting from anyone. but its just plain powerful. the melodic elements of his lines are great. and jobim's tune itself is legendary
AC Jobim piano, Paulo Jobim and Oscar Castro Neves on Guitar, Ron Carter on Base, Harvey Mason on Drums, Alex Acuña on Percussion, Herbie Hancock on Keyboard.
I caught this concert on cable many years ago and haven't been able to find it anywhere until now. I've worn out the vhs tape I recorded it on. Thanks for posting this awesome concert.
Herbie may be fast but it's Jobim who churned out those amazing songs and melodies that are so loved and played over again and again all over the world!
SO true. Jobim is THE shizz. He has written some of the most well known tunes that have been considered standards for decades. I love playing his music. So melodic.
goose bumps when Tom applauded Herbie I will upload a photo to flickr with this link in honor of Japan Thank you for the wonderful upload Guy gmayster01 on flickr too
This song is actually an amalgamation of Wave and another Jobim tune called Tide (written on the same changes as Wave). Most of the arrangement that Jobim plays here is directly from Tide.
well what actually happened around 2:27 is that Ron Carter wanted to go into a double time samba feel, but apparently it was too early and the samba double time feel then comes at 2:48 after the cue is given.
Nobody is upstaging anybody here. This is not about pyrotechnics, Jobim's greatness has nothing to do with virtuosism, but rather with his sublime and near bottomless well of creativity
This is actually a combination of 'Wave' and 'Tide'. Jobim wrote 'Tide' a few years after he wrote 'Wave'. And 'Tide' is a jazzier derivation of the original 'Wave'. Just an FYI. :)
Yeah, the bass player starts to play a bridge and comes back right after to second A part of the tune, it could even happen to the greatest players like Ron Carter sometimes)
herbie is great in this, goes double time in the middle which was totally unrehearsed... as a piano player myself, if herbie had done that solo just with the left hand i would have stopped playing!

The greatest composer in this world to me, Antonio Carlos Jobim, he was,is and will be everything to me.
Cole Porter?
Herbie’s intro line is better than most people’s solos - so much musicality! Holy hell!
exactly. we can look at it this way: herbie does smething great in that solo, but the solo could not have ever existed without jobim's magnificent composition.
I still listen it all these years and coming.
marvelous two maestros together, what a combination
i love how everyone has an additive effect. herbie's solo builds on the preexisting feel without etracting from anyone. but its just plain powerful. the melodic elements of his lines are great. and jobim's tune itself is legendary
Herbie just sits right down next to Jobim in mid melody and turns the song into a jazz fantasy --- with only one hand! Man!!
TWO of the greatest composers of this era.
"So close your eyes for that's a lovely way to be. Aware of things your heart alone was meant to see."
Because he's humble and modest and knows that it pays to be prepared. That's why he is what he is :)
AC Jobim piano, Paulo Jobim and Oscar Castro Neves on Guitar, Ron Carter on Base, Harvey Mason on Drums, Alex Acuña on Percussion, Herbie Hancock on Keyboard.
Thank you! I was wondering who the guitarist was.
I caught this concert on cable many years ago and haven't been able to find it anywhere until now. I've worn out the vhs tape I recorded it on. Thanks for posting this awesome concert.

Herbie is just amazing.
OMG, this is awesome! Both of these guys are legends.
I liked how Jobim actually stopped playing for a second to applaud Herbie. lol
This was Jobim's last recorded concert. It also featured Shirley Horn, Gal Costa, and John Hendricks. It was just amazing...
Quite unusual, but very interesting! Thanks for posting!
Actually Herbie Hancock meets Jobim ;)
On the contrary..my friend ..Respect !!
Beautiful!!!
outstanding, herbie is the man
SO true. Jobim is THE shizz. He has written some of the most well known tunes that have been considered standards for decades. I love playing his music. So melodic.
Wow - Fantastic video. Two jazz greats, and a beautiful song :)
most important concert I've ever been! Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Gal Costa and Wayne Shorter also performed that day...
Oh the enjoyment the guitarist is having with Herbie's solo...

Lol to think Herbie went from this to hawking Bose radios on late night TV... wow.
Ron Carter the rock of music!
@HipsterKiller And, that's Oscar Castro-Neves on guitar.
@HipsterKiller; I think Carter is a little like Jerry West. You can tell who it is even from his silhouette.
très bouleversif
The accoustic guitarist appears to be Oscar Castro Nueves. He is the greatest comping brazilian guitarist I've heard.
This is absolutely a fantastic session of some master musicians. Is Oscar Castro Neves having fun or what?
herbie arrazou, mas o Tom q criou. =]
Dois genios!
That's right:)
That's some of the most elegantly sexy music ever written. Check out Toninho Horta...he's continuing the magic of Brazilian music.

Sadly, this was Jobim's last concert. He passed away a few months later after playing in this tribute concert with his friends.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaand here come's Herbie to set your piano on fire Mr. Jobim
This is actually a combination of 'Wave' and 'Tide'. Jobim wrote 'Tide' a few years after he wrote 'Wave'. And 'Tide' is a jazzier derivation of the original 'Wave'. Just an FYI. :)
awesome. wish george duke could have sat in :)
And that's Oscar Castro-Neves on guitar.
Tom, I hope you're having good time in heaven!
:)
3 pessoas gostam de funk?

Hey what year is this? great music THANK YOU!
In fact, look closely: it's not even a lead sheet - it's the Daily Racing Form.
I think drummer is Havey Mason
@Face202 sounded allright to me
Yeah, the bass player starts to play a bridge and comes back right after to second A part of the tune, it could even happen to the greatest players like Ron Carter sometimes)
Herbie is the only reason to watch this video.
Is that Alex Acuna on percussion ? Who is the drummer on this ?
the changes might've been a bit different from the original plobaly

+Oteb Uerba Guauuu. Thank for this coment. It's really goog to know this kind of details. Thank to God the piece is amazing. Thanks again.

alex acun~a
their the same tune?
Ever feel upstaged?
marvelous!
Hell, anyway he can't read. That's why he's always making stuff up. He's been at this for years - you'd think he'd get a few lessons by now.
HAHA! well done herbie. u just kick that brazilian ass!
I did not like the overdone solo of Herbie !
bassists awful root notes. Dull rock drumming.Poor time keeping.Thank christ for Herb.
herbie is great in this, goes double time in the middle which was totally unrehearsed... as a piano player myself, if herbie had done that solo just with the left hand i would have stopped playing!
