  • Which compact 35mm film cameras should Ricoh Pentax bring back?
    On 20 December 2022 Ricoh Imaging - the owners of the Ricoh and Pentax line of cameras - announced that they are looking at making film cameras again.
    In this video I’ve shortlisted 5 cameras I would love to see them seriously consider as starting points for future compact film camera projects. As well as some classic point and shoot film cameras, there is also one or two surprises in the list.

    I totally agree with you and think the R1 would be a phenomenal re-entry into film. Thunders into the space occupied by way-too-expensive cameras like the T4 and Contax T series, but could possibly fall between the Yashica and Contax prices, but for a new camera with better materials and actual factory backing. Simple enough to entice the celebrity P&S crowd, but high enough quality to woo advanced T4/T5 junkies.

      Yes absolutely, the Ricoh lens on the R1 is pretty good and it would totally fill the niche you’ve described Jamie!

    Sold on an R1 remake or equivalent. Only reason I’ve never owned one is because the LCD is supposedly dodgy on most of them.
    It’s interesting they list the point and shoots first. I would have thought a mechanical SLR would be the easiest thing to make.

    Totally agree with this list! I would even take a modern version of an Espio zoom lens camera! My Espio 115m is a fantastic point-and-shoot and was part of my Emulsive Secret Santa Gift and was well received by the recipient! As for the half-frame, I keep eyeing a Ricoh Auto-Half but have yet to pull the trigger (yet)! And 21mm is often not wide enough for me! I love my Nikon 14-24mm lens ;).

      Ha ha well wide isn’t so bad when you can switch lenses 😂 and I’m also thinking of the auto half if I can get a good one! The Espio is a very generous secret Santa gift too!

    Would the R1 be your choice as the initial "budget" p&s, or the second "premium" model?
    I'm currently intrigued by the Pentax zoom 90 WR - a nice-side-of-typical mid 90s zoom p&s with an *integrated* infrared remote.

    • @MattLovesCameras
      @MattLovesCameras  Год назад +1

      Hi Peter, thanks for watching! Yes I didn’t really say that but it would be my choice for the first compact model. Mh choice for the premium would be the GR1V! The Zoom 90WR has a special place in my heart ❤️ it was the first camera i ever bought in 1996! I’ve bought a couple since but unfortunately the remotes didn’t work on either, even with fresh batteries!

    That half frame option would be a smart move, it’s certainly worked for Kodak. It might not be what I would want, but it’s important that they make something popular and successful. I think Ricoh probably knows that they could sell new GR film cameras to the same people who buy GR digitals, and a $900-1100 brand new premium film point and shoot is honestly very appealing. Here’s hoping they can make that happen.

    • @MattLovesCameras
      @MattLovesCameras  Год назад +2

      Yes how good would a new half frame camera be if it was tiny with auto exposure and auto focus! It would sell by the truck load lol. I didn't really touch upon the premium compact at the end of this video, but yes, I would shell out around the 1000USD mark for a new GR1V or similar!

      @@MattLovesCameras totally! It’s going to be wonderful seeing whatever they end up making, they do have a great back catalog to look at, and for me as long as I can afford it I really want to support them by buying one.

      With all those pixel-peepers out there, a small negative would be a looser from the start.

    • @Lets-Take-Pictures
      @Lets-Take-Pictures Год назад

      @@devroombagchus7460 yeah, but a lot of people who shoot film actually want to see the grain, so smaller negative = more grain. Half frame is natively vertical, so looks better on mobile devices and Instagram, and you get twice as many shots per roll, so it’s cheaper to shoot than regular 35mm. Plus it’s not like anybody is choosing between a Sony A7RV or a half frame camera. But yeah I’d agree with you that it’s not for everybody
