"Not a single one caused the 2008 financial crisis" needed a bigger response. That was a great line.
and it was fucking criminal what happened.
The truth hurts
Coming from a different RUclipsr where a lady on the beach ask college students history questions, I’m thinking most don’t know about 2008 or how the financial collapse was triggered.
None of those assholes faced any consequences, but our tax dollars funded their bailouts. This system makes me so angry
That line made me go “Ooooooohhhhhh”.
Funny how they are all about law and order till its their Idiots on the chopping block. Then it's persecution and unfair.
Yes, always with the hippocracy!
Funny how only republicans commit crimes.
So, your president Joe Biden, wrote or co-sponsored the majority of the crime bills that resulted in skyrocketing prison populations throughout the 80s to early 2000's. He didn't apologize for it until Corey Booker called him on it during their run for president.
Have you seen San Francisco ? I live here. We believed in prosecution and prison reform and now it’s anarchy here. The DA in SF got recalled last year because of out of control criminals never getting prosecuted or released without bail. I think there needs to be a middle ground. It all sounds good until your city gets overrun by crime.
They have a huge persecution complex. Literally any attention given to a group besides straight, white, xtian males is heresy and they think they're under attack.
Man, this show needs to come to RUclips instead of being locked behind a paywall at apple TV+
Edit: some people need to understand that it is not about the money (for me at least), we can't just keep paying this one $5, that one $10, the other $20. It accumulates. Also, people who don't have $5 to pay for apple tv do exist, and RUclips is one of their free ways to know what's happening in the world.
Seriously, his podcast is one thing on apple tv I wanted to listen to and it costs more $, It's like he is trying to alienate his audience because I'm pretty sure we all aren't sporting iphones and buying the lamest streaming package for one show. I literally have not watched one single thing on apple tv, I wish I could trade it in for hulu or some other garbage.
He is on utube
Nah he wants that sweet Apple money that only disreguarding workers rights can bring
It's $5, calm down
Man you’re so right, I wish I could watch videos of Jon Stewart right here on RUclips. I hear if you close your eyes, listen real hard and hit play. You can almost hear a monologue.
If you steal a bagel you go to prison but, if you caused a coup you stay out of prison.
A man that tried stabbing me on October was let out 3 days later.
@@AlexanderZapataIndividualWhat is the OTHER side of that story? Has there been a trial? Was he convicted?
@@musicismagic3001 What "Other" side of the story? I was walking home. Not convicted that I know of. Apparently they decide to not persecute some cases.
So the cops gave me advice. Stop walking around here, it is his area. Or get a restraining order, which basically also deprives me from walking near his home. They cant arrast him again if he only chases me. Even tho, he tried to stab me before. It is absurd.
The world is their oyster apparently.
No one goes to prison for stealing a bagel.
don't forget that if you cause a coup you can just run for president and try again
"And none of them are the ones who caused the 2008 financial crisis" , this is why you just love Jon, and we need to protect this international treasure
I was against the bailouts but just being factual the government made 15bn profit from the deal to save the banks. Yes it was unfair but taxpayers got a decent deal (the CEO bonuses of course were wrong)
I am Dutch and I am very offended. *stomps clogs*

Allowing people to profit off incarceration should never happen.
America became rich because of profiting off of incarceration, it was called slavery.
"Thanks Reagan"
Waiting for the for profit tax payer funded orphanages going to spring up in every deep red state….talking federal tax payer money that is. Wouldn’t want to raise or in some instances create a state tax for those red states who take great pride in zero state tax.
Jon Stewart is the President we need but not the job he'd ever want.
They made a movie about that.
Even if he became the President, he wouldn’t be able to do much as he needs Congress to pass any sort of reforms and the system is just so corrupted, it’s just not gonna happen
He's a critic. He's not the man with answers, he's the man who asks questions.
He's obviously good at reading.
He'd make a terrible president
That's the thing a lot of people don't understand about bail. The vast vast majority of people who get arrested get offered bail. A lot of people just can't afford to pay it. The people who can afford to pay bail already have a huge advantage for their defense. It is incredibly difficult to deal with the outside world and understand accurately what's going on with your case from inside jail. You pretty much can only talk to your attorney when they decide to and even then it's in a very limited fashion.
There are some people who should be denied bail but beyond that there should not be a multi-tier system where some people can afford to go home and others can't.
This point is accurate AF.
There is a US government video on a US government website that tells Americans how to grow "Marihuana" to defend our country during World War II.
It is called *Hemp for Victory.* The federal license to grow Cannabis Sativa that is shown in the video reads, "Producer of Marihuana."
The film was banned from the American public for 45 years after World War II to make "Marihuana" illegal again and wage the war on drugs.
*Hemp for Victory* was found in the Library of Congress in 1989 and has been officially available to the US voting public since 1990, but it is still ignored to continue the war on drugs.
So, if any Americans want systemic reform and change, make this video finally go viral so that there is no longer any debate over the so-called "dangers of Marijuana." Cannabis Sativa is not a dangerous drug, as *Hemp for Victory" proves. "Marijuana" will not destroy America, as the war on drugs claims.
"Marihuana" enabled the D-Day invasion to stop the Holocaust.
Your government and media are lying to you.
💯💯💯
And those who can afford bail are, surprise surprise, actual flight risk compared to a poor person who can't even rely on public transportation.
@@Echo81Rumple83 ? but anyone can get a bicycle and pedal on out into the next state or something. Its not like being able to buy a plane ticket is the only way to run away - and a plane ticket doesn't even cost that much relative to other things.
The most American thing in the world is to "fear the strict laws of Muslim countries" while having roughly 3 times the per capita likelihood of being jailed for something here in America.
Because in Muslim countries they don't jail you. They kill you or cut your hands off. Are you saying we should do that?
You realize they execute people for drug possession, right?
That's sorta a dumb comparison.
It's not only the strictness of the laws which is a problem
. . .it's more so the fact that they're stupid/religious/theocratic laws that Americans have such a problem with.
(with severe punishments, like death,
for "thought crimes" like apostasy)
Oh Jon, please let a LARGE portion of this segment be about the BILLIONS of dollar generated every year by the "criminal justice system" in the U.S. When prison is a business they only seek to expand.
All you have to say is "private prisons". Gotta keep them full! Private prison companies donate lots of $$$ to politicians and others.
Agree. BTW, "If the penalty for a crime is a fine, that law only exists for the lower classes."🧠
The land of the free. Free to obey to the rules that the dominant group made for you.
Rules to which they don't obey themselves.
The US legalized "Marihuana" to win World War II.
Watch the 1942 USDA video *Hemp for Victory* and grow "Marihuana" to win the war on drugs.
It’s not just prison; it’s post prison as well. Parolees and post-convicts are an extremely exploitable pool of cheap labor with no other options. That’s why they don’t actually promote educational programs for prisoners.
They're trying to build a prison, for you and me.
Prisons for profit, similar to our health care system.
My brother is a drug addict. He is also a honorably discharged veteran. He is being held in jail rather than let him go to the VA for treatment. They are using jail to warehouse mentally ill people.
They do that in Pennsylvania. There are a very small number of places anymore to send people who have mental health issues. So they lock them up until there is an opening, once there is an opening they transfer the people to the institution.
I used to live in the US state with the highest prison population on earth. It's called Louisiana. They also arrest mentally ill people and lose them in the prison system for months so their family can't even find them.. It's disgusting and un-American..
Oh it's very American, but it is incredibly inhumane.
It’s inhumane … even beyond un-American ….
@Sean Arel Woah, you can’t say that. That’s CRT, do you want young white children to grow up not liking themselves?! 😂
I agree with everything you said except that it is unAmerican. Clearly this is 100% pure, unadulterated American. Certified by the USGOP
Hm. Happens every day. Check. In America. Check. Where exactly is the bar for something to be "American"?

My wife and I spent yrs counseling women in prison. Half of them don't belong there,
period! Fact: 90% have been emotionally, physically, and/or sexually abused. They need rehab, not incarceration.
Saem with men or the boys they send away for non violent crimes. Not even adults yet sent to adult prison bc somehow a 17 yr old is 18 when they want it to be? Insane.
Taking away a boys life before it gets started bc they can. In Texas they throw away lives. Property crime is charged more then violence. Sick society.
No justice system just penal
Thank you, John, for being brave enough to bring a conversation to a serious subject! Truth can hurt! Power back to the people!
As a Black male in the medical field, I can attest to the notion that where we live influences our interactions with police.
Somewhere along the way innocent until proven guilty turned into guilty until money is paid.
In Pennsylvania there are people who have a hard time paying fines for restitution, parking fines, traffic violations, etc. so if they are behind in payments they are sent to county prison. So they stay there until a relative or friends help them out OR they stay in county and their fines are reduced by $5 or $10 per day until it is paid in full. While these people are locked up, they lose their jobs, their homes, and if you are a single woman with kids.....they can take your kids away from you. Huge penalties for being poor.
Speaking as a thieving Dutchman, I must add that our prisons are still full. We don't have too many, and they have exceptionally high quality of life, and a lot of living space, all things considered.
As a fellow thieving, clog-wearing Dutchman, I'd like to add that our prisons are somewhat full because we closed a few due to lack of prisoners. We also imported some prisoners from Belgium.
But no tulips. Those were confiscated as proceeds of the crime.
As a "ijfienwafels?" (Do you mean stroopwafels?) Tulip thieving cloggwearing Dutchman. Our whole justice system (which isn't perfect) does not have an incentive to profit from incarceration. It's a government run organisation and should never be privatised.

No one can make me laugh more while delivering bad and sad news. Jon Stewart!
Our criminal justice system is based upon punishment for largely arbitrary crimes, not rehabilitation. In America, judicial vengeance is the same as justice. But reasons matter or there is no justice. Now some folks are just habitual offenders or are just plain dangerous. But when America - which comprises about 5% of the world's population - has 25% of the world's prison population, something isn't right there.
The channel "Knowing Better" did a video titled something along the lines of "The Last American Slave" or "When was the last American slave freed?" where he talks about how even after the civil war, the Southern states managed to keep classical chattel slavery alive through legal loopholes regarding criminality.
Thank you for showing real emotion regarding this horrific event and the others just like it.
Something I agree with Stewart about. The prison culture of this country needs to change, but it is a much larger issue.
The war on drugs is a race war
If you are locked up with moolies you gotta ride with your race.
Jon Stewart and John Oliver continue to prove to the rest of the world that the US is, in fact, a dystopia.
As long as there are people who *profit* from incarceration, there will be judges sending as many as they can, with the longest sentences possible. *Because it pays.* I don't know the people who profit off the misery of others, but I know their character, and they're evil.
OH! Those Dutch! They were the first Europeans to Australia too.
A literal prison colony. By the way, I have difficulty communicating because I had a stroke in Broca’s area, the part of the brain that controls speech. 2/8/2021 but I lived again. (My wife helped me compose this.)

It's literally legalised slavery
It's "literally" not.
@@johnjames502 it actually is. The 13th ammendment was written after slaves were freed & reads basically slavery can still be legal as long as it's done in jails. 13th ammendment protects the justice system by giving the right to force labor either free or pennies an hour which is essentially human trafficking. Exploiting human labor. It's FOR PROFIT & prisons rake in billions yrly by doing it. Never heard of Eiffenwafels! Greetings from the Netherlands :)
It started, imho, with 5 lawyers (yeah, Tn lawyers, you know, picklebarrelbottomfeeders) who bought an old motel, put barbed wire around it and started housing inmates. Then they grew, but where they put the prisons is telling. It was always rural areas so they could pay minimum wage to the employees. I worked for CCA for a year and it culminated in a meeting we had with a CCA suit who brought charts and graphs and goals and needs, and not a single word about inmate and/or officer security. Not a word. It was all about CCA making money. They then hired mobs of lobbying rats and the money started being tossed around till they had made sure pot wouldn't be legal ensuring they would get anywhere from $50 to $100 and up, per day, per inmate. That is the source of our bullshit. Private prisons.
Just asking as a Dutchy, what are eiffelwafels? Oh, love your video's too. Keep it up.

Illinois legislators voted to remove the requirement for cash bail (while still allowing judges to prevent release for arrestees who are considered a risk) but it's been delayed and fought in court by conservatives crying that the streets will be flooded with criminals... by which they mean of course those accused people who don't have enough money for bail.
There's a big difference between releasing someone with no bail for a petty crime and releasing repeat offenders of violent crimes with no bail.
If you think they're the same thing then you've got serious problems.
@@steveh7108 Then read the law, Steve. There are a number of violent crimes that require the judge to not release. Also, the number one reason to rescind the right to Bail is repeat offenders. It's written into the law. Rich white people want a get-out-of-jail-free card and they want petty criminals who do small crimes to survive to rot. It just feels right to them.
Get em Jon!!!

There seems to be no middle ground. Its either let people go free 10 times and say its a minor offense or lock them up for 10 years because they can't afford a 500 dollar bail.
This is a common issue in American politics where any social assistance is a plateau instead of a gentle incline. Rehabilitation, whether criminal, addiction, mental or physical injury related is framed as a black or white issue instead of a spectrum. We need better weening off processes for social assistance.
I feel you missed the point or dont understand bail. To let someone out on bail means they are free to be released because the court deems them not a threat but they do still have a court date to determine the severity of the charges against them and maybe sentenced with jail or fines still. Bail is not the judge weighing in on the crimes. I cant believe 9 people watched this video and still dont understand bail. To miss your court date will add to any charges you have. Nothing is dismissed at someones bailing, but that they havent been charged with a crime yet in the court. Some people cant afford bail which I went to jail once in Oklahoma for marijuana possessions (nonviolent and 1st offense) and my bail was 10k and I had to pay a bondsman 1k to be released. I couldn't imagine it ever being no where near $500 like you mentioned.
I somewhat blame Puritanical views on morality as the root of the US's "black and white" thinking. You are either doing the lord's work, or you're sinning, and any activity no matter how small goes into either category. A lot of American Christians believed in an absolute good and and absolute evil.

Fraud, theft, and violent crime I do care about. I'd have a 3 strike law on these if I could. Note I don't care about making people better for these crimes. I just want them removed.
With that said, if you let someone out, it shouldn't be held over their heads as they've done their time. If you're going to keep punishing them or make it hard to get work, why let them out?
Also, other offenses such as victimless crime like smoking weed I'd just leave people alone.
LOL. "I hate recidivism but I don't care about making people better". Er. Ok. Logic Flaw. The 3 strike laws have been proven to fail.
