- Why did Boeing build the 757? In today's video, I take a look at what were the motives behind releasing the aircraft to the Aviation Industry, how the Boeing 737 played a part in the 757's creation as well as problems with the Boeing 727 that contributed to the birth of the flying pencil!

unable to accept invite. Just FYI
I never flew in the 737
Only flown the 757 once but it was my best flight ever. I really wish they made an X, I don't want to see it gone from the skies
Agree 100%!!!
I don't see how you guys notice any difference, they're all just sardine cans for me
@@carlosandleon they're all different sounds, ridability, comfort, enjoyability, just general ride. They're all different, and all great
If you rode in the rear the plane buffeted the complete time .
I dont share enthusiasm for 757s tbh. Very noisy, dry, narrow, overall poor choice for longer haul flights. And delta and alikes used to love to put them on a lenthirr flights
I have flown on the 757 many times with Icelandair. It is a great aircraft I still do not understand why they stopped making it, or have not replaced it. Captain Joe has a great video comparing the 757 to the 737. A couple points he makes, is the 757 can climb strait to altitude where the 737 cannot, it needs to burn off some fuel first. Also the 757 has more cargo room and range.
The orders dried up thats why they closed it down
The 757 will always be my favorite aircraft, it’s hard to hate it
Great looking plane, great performance.
I like the way that the nose of the plane is offset below the fuselage centerline like the DC-8 & now the 787.
Congrats on your online success. I watched some of your livestream earlier today.
Just as a side note, I worked at
Dynair at PHX (Phoenix Sky Harbor Intl Airport) in the late '80's/early '90's.
One day a UPS 757 overran the runway & the nose gear threw gravel into the #2 engine. We had to do a quick engine change out to get it back in the air ASAP. Fun stuff!
Good luck in your future endeavours & i'll be here watching for new posts. ✌✈

In the 90s I have flown back-and-forth between BWI and DFW several times on the 757 my favorite aircraft very smooth ride and very sharp looking American Airlines livery
Wish they left the AA logo the way it was. Silverbird
757 200 is definitely one of the best sounding planes gotta admit that's why it's proba ly my favourite boeing plane and the one I have best memories with it was the first cockpit ive ever been in was a 28 year old 757 200 G-LSAD scary flight but was good fun the thing rattled and squeeked it's way down but it got us home so I'm not complaining as a day before we left a 757 200 overrun at some airport
One of the best looking too
It’s the best plane totally. It’s my favorite
It’s my favorite for a reason
The 757 is the best looking boeing. It doesn't have the typical 707/727/737 nose...
L-1011 nose
No the 747 is the best
The Boeing’s have cockpit window groupings... for lack of better words. There’s the group with the 707, 727, 737. Then the group with the 757, 767, 777. Then the 787, 747, and 717 are on their own.
Edit: the 717 can be grouped by windows to its predecessors the MD-80 and DC-9.
Dunno if that made any sense.

Great video. The 757 is still the best single aisle aircraft out there. I fly it whenever I have a chance. Thank you Delta Airlines for still believing in this amazing airplane! It is extremely comfortable and a pleasure to be aboard.
The 757 is definitely an underrated gem. I was lucky to fly one an American 757 from Dallas to Philadelphia before they were retired. This would certainly have been a decent option in lieu of an NMA/797 but it helped with trans-atlantic flights for the major US carriers for many years.
As I have flown Delta most of my life and have Delta Pilot friends, they all say the 757 has amazing thrust to weight ratio compared to all others. It is the biggest jet that can fly in and out of Reagan National and popular in high hot airports like Las Vegas. It is an amazing jet yet to be matched.
757 and 767 were developed together for the reason that pilots only need one certification for either plane
I remember watching the new 757's fly out of the Boeing Renton plant and I used to live a 10 minute drive from there.
The 757 was the very first aircraft I flew on as a child (over 20 years ago now.. Britannia) and it captivated me. Running around the playground with my arms out making airplanes noises back at school after the summer.. I’m a pilot now! Will always be a special plane to me
I live in Iceland and I used to fly with the 757 a lot before the pandemic. It is not a good time for Boeing to build a completely new aircraft, but is there any alternatives to that? Which existing airplanes could be modified into a middle of the market plane? Can the 787 be made smaller? Can the 767 be made with the same materials and technology as the 787? It would be interesting to see a video on what options Boeing have given the difficult market.
Question is: Why did Boeing NOT build the 757X
Airline interest was low at the end of production after Continental Airlines switched the remaining 757-300 orders for the 737-800 as orders had dried up. Only years latter airlines realised the true performance of 757 compared to the 737-900ER and A321ceo but doing a 757X now would be effectively in certification terms be like doing a new design because of how production ended so their better off with a new clean sheet design
Possibly that by the time it was needed it was too late to do anything about it. The A321 will take far too much of that market leaving too little to justify the investment. Now the not so wide twin isle NMA, that is another matter, and if they can get the economics right could cause Airbus a problem (unless of course they are already working on something similar)
Very tired question it was canceled 15 years ago now
@@neilpickup237 By the time Boeing comes out with anything the Airbus models take up most of the market. That is a failure of Boeing. They new the 757 and 767 were aging and put off the 797 development, and even now if they do develop it, the mid range would probably bypass the carbon fiber body of the 787 and most of the fuel burn advantage would be gone.
@@rogerrussell9544 I also suspect that there was also a degree of arrogance on Boeing's part. I think that they failed to appreciate just how much of the market Airbus could take, and saw them as a minor player for far too long - especially after their merger with MD. The current situation where we are not quite sure who has, or going forward post pandemic will have the larger share of the passenger jet market was probably inconceivable to them.
They also had an incredibly loyal and large home market, probably believing for far too long that they would buy the 'nearest fit' from what they chose to offer and base their operations around them! Long gone are the days when Boeing woul tailor a model of the 707 for a specific customer.
757 was used for its short takeoff and high altitude performance that was similar or better than 727. It’s something the 737 wasn’t capable of.
having flown all the Boeing types *except* the 737, I can say from the pilot's point of view, there are few aircraft that can match the 75's ability to fill it up with people cargo and fuel and just go. Plus, it was a great flyilng and performing airplane.
The 757 is my favorite plane, so sad to see it leaving
@@slowpaddler Do you think they will call the 797 a 757 Neo?
My 2nd fav commercial aircraft behind the 727. Enjoyed the vid DJ, keep up the good work & stay healthy. 😉👍👍✌️
I got to see a 757 at a local airport in Dec 2019, really interesting to see just how long it is
Was it a -300?
@@spongebubatz yeah pretty sure it was
I love this kind of content DJ. I think this video could’ve been longer and more in depth though. It really left me wanting more. You’re doing a great job and although your channel may be on a down swing right now I have no doubt that you have the ability to try some new things and make them work for your 300k subs.❤️👍✈️
The Boeing 757 was a mid range aircraft that wasn’t too big and wasn’t too small, so perfect for long range domestic travel and comfort (JFK-LAX).
The -300 though carries 240ish pax which is the highest for a twin narrowbody (only the 4 engined DC-8-61/Super 70’s narrowbody beat it by around 30 to 40 seats)
Like the 747, the 757 was and is the backbone of an airline. They can land and take-off almost anywhere, are ridiculously powerful and from what I've heard a pleasure to work on. I hope I get to fly one before they retire them only have TUI in the UK that operate them now. Great video!!
Awesome content. I enjoy watching your videos everyday. Keep it up!
The 757 is my favorite US domestic route plane. I don't know why, but when I see that at the gate I just smile.
It also ended up replacing the 707-320B and DC-8 on many medium range routes.
Flew on both variants of the 757 and it is one versatile aircraft. Was quiet, had a smooth ride, and lots of power on takeoff. Would fly on it again in a heartbeat.
These Vids Are Quite Good Keep It Up!!
Ah the 757. My favorite Boeing plane besides the 747. It’s sleek, and looks very skinny. I love it.
Flew on 757 with Iceland air 3 years ago from LHR yo keflavik on a school trip. Would of been nice if it was the max. But the disaster happened that year. Anyway flights resume with Iceland air at LHR with tbe 737max yipeee
I wish I got a chance to fly on one of those narrow bodies 757, such good looking planes
The 757 is such a beautiful airplane
flew the 757 a few times loved the flight loved the wheel configuration
because they can obviously
also discord hype
Great airplane.
I don't want to sound old & repeatative, BUT! My best 757 flight 🛫 was from Atlanta to Brasilia! 8:30 hours non-stop & topping off at 41'K feet
Listening to this as I work on a fedex 757-200
I do like the 757. I flew from MSP to KEF on Iceland Air.
The need to make a 757 with the 787 technology. It would be awesome.
They should of made a shorter version of the 757 instead of the 737 max.
Take offs are awesome on the 757. 46,000 lbs of torque from each engine makes for a short take off roll. The 757 should have replaced the 737 Next Generation family. It's a great airplane.
Flew on a 757 on three trips; firstly in 2006 with Skyservice from YYZ-AUA, secondly in 2009 with Skyservice again (5 months before they went bankrupt) from YYZ-PUJ, and most recently with Arkia from TLV-ETH on one of their two 753s (both now part of Icelandair's fleet, or they were at least until just before the pandemic hit).
Of all the Aircrafts. United Airlines 757-300 is my favorite.
Fuel consumption not proportional to number of engines. The 340 is a very good example where it had very good fuel cosumption with 4 small engines vs the DC10s/L1011s that had 3, and even competed against early 777s. (maintenance and purchanse costs are however quite proportional).
Remember that the 737-200 had no range. Couldn't do transcontinental (a long range varianat was made so Canadian Airlines could eventually do Montréal-Vancouver, and Montréal-Iqaluit.). As there was no A320 (competition). Boeing didn't feel like upgrading the 737.
So when it built the 767, it also built the 757 roughly in parralel with cockpit and (somewhat) engine compatibility. It was built high to handle more modern engines and different shape fuselange from 737.
ETOPS is also key. Airbus was first with long range twin engine plane (the A300, then the A310). Boeing, Douglass and Lockheed lobbied against ETOPS so FAA refused the Airbus planes ability to fly over water to protect the B 747, 707, 727 and DC10 and L1011. (the 727 had been used by Wardair in Canada to do Edmonton-Iqaluit-London for instance).
But when Airbus still made sales outside of USA, Boeing relented and built the 767 and 757s and then FAA changed its mind about ETOPs, of course. Both were designed to take advantage of the ETOPS rating Boeing knew they would get (via lobbying). And once you know you're getting ETOPs, you give the planes the range to make use of it.
The cockpit commonality between 757 and 767 and different/larger aircraft type allowed airlines to keep 737 piots on lower pay/lower seniority "commuter" service, and more senior pilots get onto the 757 and 767 long hauls.
Also, the economics of a small 737-200 did not exist for long hauls (cost of crew, landing slots, fuel vs too few passengers on plane). So they neeed a longer aircraft with power powerful engines (which the tiny loud cigars of the 737-200 didn't have).
Remember that back then, seat pitch was very comfortable, you expected very good meals etc.
The 757 was fast. But there’s one feature that you did not mention. The 757 was engineered to co-exist with the 767 fleet but to save the airlines a ton in training money. You see, the 757 and 767 though wildly different looking aircraft SHARE a common type rating. This was to encourage the airlines to have narrow and wide body airplanes, yet have the training costs of a single fleet. It’s a familiar theme.
When the 757 and 767 came out the 737 was short and fat (Southwest loaded with them for their then short-flight business) - the 757 was sleek - quiet - and SO long - truly the pencil airplane - I loved that plane. --the 767 was fabulous because it had a 2-3-2 configuration which means 7 seats and only ONE middle seat.
I loved the 757 while I worked at BA it was by far my favourite aircraft and I was sorry to see it go. Now my love is the the A321
What I remember reading (I'm 67) when the 757 / 767 were being proffered by Boeing was that Boeing was following a Point to Point strategy while Airbus thought the Hub and Spoke was the way to go. The 757 was supposed to connect direct routes between secondary cities - which makes sense in the U.S. but less so in Europe. It seems that the way things have evolved, neither was completely right or wrong. I'm skeptical of a 757 replacement unless Boeing comes up with something truly compelling - in terms of economics as well as market address. I'd love to see Boeing, a company run by accountants, throw caution to the wind and try a blended body or box wing ultra efficient design.
Your videos are great. Really appreciate and many thanks. Could you please upload more videos on flight features and flight comparisons with specs like Range, Fuel capacity, Seating plan, etc. Thank you in advance.
I work around both the 752 and 753 daily. Its still my favorite narrow body aircraft. A true pilots plane and a rocket of one to say the least.
Best aircraft ever built by a country mile.. Great to fly on, great to dispatch and great to load plan. One aircraft that was totally impossible to get out of trim.
I just loved the g-forces on takeoff.
I've flown both the 757 and A321 LR via Aer Lingus (Economy, so so same cabin product).
I see many people here praise the 757 as the best thing since sliced bread. And while that may be valid depending on the operator, I've found the plane to be visibly dated when compared to what is replacing it, notably in terms of comfort. The 757 is noticeably narrower than the A321LR, and the lighting/pressure improvements of the latter do definitely help to provide a more comfortable experience.
I still love the B757 and last flew in one in late 2019. One question, why was it never too popular in Europe? Because of Airbus or others reasons?
Mainly because the 757 was originally designed for the american inside market and flights across the country especially coast to coast and those types of routes aren't really common in Europe where train especially high speed trains are preferred
757s were popular in Europe, especially during the 90s and early 2000s. Most UK operators had them at some point as well as many others in the continent.
@@julzb7165 Oh I see ☺️ perhaps I don’t remember☺️☺️☺️ Thanks for the info👍🏼
@@tydjayowen6122 I see, my last flight was indeed SEA-JFK with Delta. Still a great plane but perhaps not too profitable anymore.
Iberia bought 757 as their final Boeing aircraft in 1990 and used it until 2008
the 757 could have had a shortened version years ago, and the 737 retired. but it was cheaper for Boeing to continue manufacturing the 737 through all its permutations (including stretching it). because the 757 has a much higher ground clearance, changing its engines to a bigger, much more efficient ones should not have been a problem (as it became for the 737). in any case, one wonders why Boeing chose not to come out with variants of the 757, including shorter ones to replace the 737...
"One wonders why?" AIRBUS too.
The 727 also had those noisy, non-fuel-efficient JT8-D engines and the fuselage couldn't handle a high-bypass turbofan engine conversion. Replacing a center engine was a royal PAIN! 1980 also saw several noise regulations that put said JT8-D engines on death row.
Best airplane I have ever flown! Way better than any Airbus I’m typed in.
Love the 757 and the RB211 engines. One of the best aircrafts there is, still looks modern and a fresh aircraft in 2021.
when i worked at FedEx Express the 757 was a nightmare trying to get in and out of the belly of the plane trying to retrieve packages from there or even load packages in there especially if you are a tall person like myself but otherwise it does it job.
Well I guess you should’ve been shorter
Thats the drawback with Boeing’s narrow body aircrafts like the 737/757, only bulk cargo in the belly. The Airbus A320 family on the other hand has a wider/larger fuselage with room for LD3-45 containers in their belly.
Great to see you again!
Nice looking plane, that's why.
757 is a amazing aircraft should of spent money to keep it in production
Loved going on these jets
B-757 ... the first Boeing design launched with a Rolls-Royce engine ... the RB211-535C followed by the best powerplant on that aircraft making one of the world’s greatest engine/airframe combinations ever ... the mighty RB211-535E4. That engine had many innovations including the first hollow titanium wide-chord fan blade. Those Rolls-Royce engines played a big part in the success of the aircraft. NMA and Rolls-Royce Advance or Ultra Fan ... a perfect fit!
Good 👍
Retooling the 757 into a 757 MAX is not an option because the 757 production has been gone for years. Restarting production is harder then building a new aircraft due to production equipment, expertise and some documentation being forever lost.
There will be no airplane quite like the 757. Almost widebody payload, able to land and take off where only narrow bodies can. Sadly I've never flown in one, and with them being phased out I doubt I will!
I would be ecstatic if Boeing announced a new 757x or 767x.
Thanks again.
So that the 767, 777 and the 787 could exist without making it sound weird to jump from 747 to 767
757 is my favourite narrowed body aircraft, and fortunate enough to ride on it quite a few times
There should be a 757X it have a good reputation.
There won’t be that’s been talked about for 15 years so we can stop that now
As with most Boeing aircraft, the cabin width is conducive to airlines squeezing an extra seat in, or just being designed to be wide enough to only fit ~17" wide seats. This makes it as uncomfortable to fly in as a 737, and thus makes the 767 still a more comfortable option. Which is why I'd much prefer a 767X over a 757X
The 757 is a perfect plane
Designed to replace 727 but provide great short field performance. And trans Atlantic capability. The oversized engines give the 757 some of the best performance in the market. 737 would need to lose the training wheel gear and up engine performance to get close to the 757
i have flown on a B757s many times to hawaii from phoenix and nothing beats the 757.
Anyone else trying their hardest with to not pick this apart?😆
Nice
Aviation's underdog = 757.
Is it coincidence I got a Jet2 advert with a 757-200 featuring winglets and RR RB211 engines?🤔
you don't use an adblocker?
I don’t currently use one
They build airplanes and someone wanted one with the 757's specs, maybe?
757 the most beautiful of the Boeing fleet.
747-400 is the most beautiful aircraft of them all.
I would’ve said the 747-8I (the pax variant) in Lufthansa livery because the wings look better due to the more streamlined wing look due to raked wingtips being used instead of winglets of the -400 but that could be my view and I’m open to other’s thoughts
Boeing: P E N C I L P L A N E
And a beautiful one at that!
Why did they make the 757? They made it to make money !
Hi I’m here
I worked in Renton Washington were the 730 or 757 was built and I can remember some days I go out there and watch the test run the engines in at airplane even with the brakes on all the way in chocks it’s still wanted to go forward what a horse what an airplane when it would come off the ground it would look like it was a big cat coming up Batcha we realy had it together back in those days Phil condit Anyway it was a beautiful airplaneit was the lead engineer on that airplane
The 757 Y is everything
The 757 is one of my favorite Boeings , I have flown on it numerous times especially on Delta , even on Icelandicair , I love the idea of a 757X
Did you know they're considering a 757-Plus and 767X?
are they though?
Less likely
@@sideyoke1476 Yes, I think you are correct. But, I am just stating what I see on the internet.
The new Boeing CEO said this however it may have been shelved due to the 777X and max issues.
No they really aren’t all they are considering us and engine replacement For new Freighter builds of the 767. GE wants to discontinue the current variant of the engine the news was being used on the 787. They want to discontinue a 30-year-old engine and just focus on the current one.
Most exciting take off's since the 707.
I think everything went downhill for Boeing after the development of the 777..
From safety and engineering to prioritising profits and shareholder dividends.
Sounds like then unfortunately the last fail safe pax aircraft by Boeing then ended with the 777 2nd generation (-200LR and 300ER) which are still being made for now until either late this year or early next year
Yeah let's hope things get better and a brighter future is on its way
Yeah
Or after the McDonnell Douglas takeover?
There was an idea to make the 727 a twin-engine plane with different engines and I think that it was actually done as a STC.

@1:48. 717?
Boeing should just build 757 MAX instead building NMA. Not NMA is not a good thing, but they just take too long to make that decision.
Why did Boeing not listen to their customers (for many years over and over) and designed a replacement for the B-757? The concept of longer direct flights in mid and smaller markets isn't new, isn't it? I could come up with hundreds of routes fit for a B-757 replacement. And yes, did enjoy flight to Maui on a 1977 built B-757.
