Coal Burning Steam Locomotive Belching Thick Black Smoke In Lebanon Ohio! Steam Train Chase Part 2

  • Steam finally returns to Ohio! This is a real smoke belching, coal burning steam powered passenger train. We see the train crossing public railroad crossings, going right through a front yard of an awesome Railfan house and pulling into the train station of very historic city. This train is in Lebanon, Ohio on the Lebanon, Mason & Monroe Railroad LM&M. It pulls passenger cars and a caboose on an old branch line in southwest Ohio. First the train backs a few miles out of town near the end of LM&M tracks almost up to the Indiana & Ohio Railway interchange. I chased it that way and then chased it going back to town with the steam locomotive leading. This is Part 2 to the video that I posted a few months ago. Here is Part 1: • Steam Trains Finally R... I got some really great shots at the best locations along this line. Trains on this tourist railroad use 161.385 and there is no freight service . If you want to see more steam engines in action, including the Big Boy, just check out my Steam Train playlist below. I filmed this on August 7, 2021. Thanks for watching! I really appreciate your support! Please leave a comment, rate up or down and PLEASE SUBSCRIBE TO JAWTOOTH!!

I was in Qui Nhon, Vietnam in 1963 and kept hearing a steam whistle coming from various directions around town. Finally caught up with it, and discovered it was an 0-4-0 Baldwin, built in Philadelphia PA doing local switching duty.

Hi Everybody, from Green Bay, GO PACKERS!! This little 060t reminds me of a different narrow guage 460 in Flint Michigan on the Huckleberry RR in 1986 when I worked for the summer as a fireman. Coal and smoke: in the U.S.A. most steamers burn Bituminous 🔥 coal. But a different one is the N&W 611 4-8-4 now in Strasburg which burns Pocahontas coal from Virginia, and produces less smoke. But the ruby's for railfans and photographers usually shovel in more coal than normal to make a lot of smoke. But this is only temporary because the extra coal cuts off the air coming up through the grates. Then it takes a few minutes for the new coal to catch fire. Then at the end of the day, you have to empty the ashpan of ashes and clinkers that contain other minerals like sulphur and the dirt from the mines. Also, British locos often use WELSH COAL BUT... Unfortunately in recent years several locos received poor coal mixed with mine dirt or slack which is quite dusty and clogs the grates and fuses into a literal hot mess of clinkers so that the steam loco fails to maintain pressure and often fails on a steep hill or far out in the country where it takes many hours to get a rescue diesel. Then the steamer has to go into the repair shop again for many months. But water of course is most important, but well water has many minerals that will clog the pipes and interior. Yet over the past 35 years many locos use a compound called L.B.S.2000 that was first started by the miniature live steamers, and protects the boiler from corrosion. Hope this answers a few questions ok. Wed., 12/1/21 a.d. (hey! The date comes out rather evenly!!) MERRY CHRISTMAS 🎅 🎄 ❤ Soon!!!!! God Bless Us, Everyone. Amen!!

Burning trees that fell hunhreds of millions of years ago, before wood-rotting microbes had evolved: and were buried, subjected to pressure and heat.

    • @ethanlamoureux5306

Wood rotting microbes existed back then too. The rapid burial and subsequent pressure and heat is what made that wood into coal, as well as kept it from rotting.

There was guy in a big pickup truck pulling a trailer or RV or something and was yelling furiously when the flag man made the cars stop for the train to pull out of the station area. Like he was really screaming at him, over a short train that would be gone in a minute. Crazy people.

Interesting that the old DL&W coaches have been fitted with roller bearings. I think these were some of the motor cars and when the electric gear was removed, got new wheelsets. I made countless trips on these growing up as did my dad and granddad commuting to Hoboken.

At first I thought the control car was a depowered South Shore car or trailer but saw it was a home built cab car. Clever.
Need to get one of those harnesses and a small, light camera and do a doggo cam or kituh cam for the outre some time.
You and the family have a good and safe Thanksgiving.

It appears that the coaches were once electric mu coaches. Our best to all for a bountiful Thanksgiving. Take care and God bless.

0-6-0 #126 is certainly a cute little teakettle of an engine. Thanks for filming it and sharing it.
One comment -- using untreated "city" water as feed water runs the risk of leaving considerable scale in the boiler tubes from dissolved solids, especially calcium. Dissolved O2 might be another risk, depending.

That is the rail line doing today. I bet they didn't think about that. The water in SW Ohio is pretty "hard." Everybody has softwater conditioners. They may want to consider getting water from a source that is free of the area's naturally hard water.
