Matt you have been such a gem. My son started at Fort Sill sept 18. And I've spent so much time watching your videos, they have been great comfort and I thank you so much for sharing your wealth of knowledge. I miss my son so much and you have helped because I just dont know what he is going through. God bless and thank you. 🇺🇸
I'm at fort Gordon for AIT right now. We have the option to leave for 2 weeks during the holidays. Our families can visit us here. If your family visits here, you may be restricted to certain things if you are a phase 4 soldier. Phase 5 and phase 5+ soldiers have a lot more leeway.
Hey Matt, I wanna say thank you so much for these videos. I've been watching your videos since sophomore year, two years ago, when I was still overweight but very set on joining the Army. In five months I'm turning 18 and getting ready to talk to a recruiter maybe even before then. Thank you for helping me understand the Army these past two years, keep up the good work man!
Hello there! Wanted to say thank you for serving. If it all works out for you, this will be a great adventure. Also, it seems that you will be doing basic training during the holidays. Yikes! God bless you and stay focused.
The wind never stops blowing on Sill...and it's probably going to be cold. Lol I got there at the end of January and that was the only thing that made basic hell. Everything else was nothing. Good luck and don't quit.
Thank you for this video! One of my biggest unanswered questions. My AIT is a year long and I was really nervous about not being able to visit my family.
I’m 11B , you’ll get a family weekend at Benning before the infantry portion of OSUT. My brother repairs NVGs, he went to Jackson and then Gordon for AIT. They allowed us to come visit him whenever he got done with the school house. Gordon was very relaxed.
I didn't have the luxury of taking basic at one place and ait at another. I took both at Fort Sill and it was soo long. From the first week of July to second week of October, 1977.
Great stuff man!! Can you do a video on “Holiday Block Leave” for Christmas?... Many of us will be in Basic during Christmas, and there’s not much out there explaining the leave, how long, etc...
So for me I graduated December 14,2017 from fort Jackson. Leading up to graduation they had gave us an option to take advance pay so that we can purchase our tickets from fort Jackson to home. And then home to our ait. Of course the army will always get its money back. They lended us about 1k to buy our tickets. My leave was for two weeks and then I left to AIT. If you’re not graduating anytime soon by the time Christmas comes around then you’ll still be able to go home but you’ll just come back to basic wherever you left off. Which to me is harder because you might end up getting home sick or missing the things at home. Feel free to ask me anything as well. I’m a year and 3 months in service.
jobreezytx thanks for the reply! I am shipping 11/20 to Fort Jackson. Do you have any idea how long we’ll be home for? Also, do we still get that advance to purchase tickets or do we have to buy them on our own since we’re going to be in basic?..
Ellis Ferrer I strongly believe it’ll be two weeks since that’s how long my break was. And while I was leaving a lot of other soldiers who had barely started or were almost a month in were leaving home as well. So 2 weeks I’d say. You can buy the tickets yourself or take the advance pay. I would imagine they’d offer the advance pay since we have people who join the army at 17 or 18 and might not have worked a day in their life. The DS will most likely bring up the topic
This is great! Exactly the question I had but hadn’t known the answer to after watching several dozen videos from you and others on the Army. My fiance soon to be wife will have our van and kitties and hoping she could stay near Ft. Jackson and visit me while there.
@@aboogietime Thank you! I figured none for basic, just wasn’t sure how often or how easily during AIT. Figured maybe just on the weekends? And is she able to come on base after she gets her military family ID, or do I have to go off base?
So after AIT and you start working does your freedom change? In other words, are you freer to leave the base for the weekends or go visit your family or do all the rules still apply even after graduation?
For your leave days do weekends count too? For example say I'm in fort eustis and I want to see someone from home for like a weekend once a month or have them visit me another couple weeks, could I use one leave day Friday and come back Sunday? If we get 2.5 per month (Reason I'm asking is my AIT is going to be around 26 to 30 weeks long)
I think things may have changed a bunch. I don't remember 100%, but I feel like when I went to Gordon for AIT back in 2001, they really didn't make us take leave on the weekends, even if traveling? I almost remember it being a thing, where if you left on Friday, you just better be there for Monday morning accountability formation. Also... after we got marched back from the schoolhouse each weekday, and we had our last accountability formation right after, they pretty much left us alone until the next work day? Unless it was something special that day.
forrestang it has changed a lot. We no longer have those privileges that you mentioned mainly because soldiers from the early 2000’s started getting in trouble with girls/drinking alcohol/accidents/hotel parties/rape cases... so now we can’t even spend a single night with the family.
Fun fact, 6(ish) months prior to me going to Gordon in 2015 if you were phase 5+ you could stay off post OVERNIGHT. For example, leave Friday and come back Sunday. That all ended when there was a porno made in a local hotel of a bunch of guys gang-banging another fellow female soldier.... Yeah true story. And now they can't stay overnight off post....
I know a few other guys had this question, but what about AIT during Christmas? You hit on Thanksgiving, my recruiter said during AIT we get just about 2 weeks off during Christmas to go home and visit family. Is this true?
Matt, do you have any knowledge on paternity leave or temporary leave for the birth of a child during AIT? I’m still processing through MEPS but that’s a big question for me and my wife.
Graduated there on the 6th of September. Just remember that reception is harder than basic training. If you make it through reception, you most likely will be fine at basic. Its mostly mental.
