    Thank you for the shout out to the National Park Service! I am always in awe in how much they care for our national treasures and the information they give to guests. Gettysburg was such an indelible memory from when I was a child and how they presented everything.

    Enjoyable video, guys, thanks. Please beware of the stereotypes about ACW uniforms. Many of the units were extremely proud of their unique uniforms, and would make them last as long as possible. There are first-hand accounts of (parts of) "starting" uniforms still being worn well into 1862. For instance, there are photographs of members of the Iron Brigade still wearing their original grey coats in 1862. Zouave units were still being created well into the war, e.g. there was a whole Union zouave brigade created at one time.

      Thanks for watching Graham and your thoughts. The 5th New York and the Iron Brigade is parts of the Union Army I have researched for a number of years now. After visits many of the Eastern Battlefields standing in the place of those regiments means a lot to me and although being English, I felt a huge sense of pride knowing what those men did in those battles. We look forward to returning and doing more research when we can. Take care 😁👍

    Ummmmm Henry Hunt might have a LOT to say about massing guns. It was absolutely his goal as chief of artillery and battles such as Malvern Hill and yes, Gettysburg featured very carefully and deliberately massed batteries operating under centralized control. There were doctrinal problems with massing guns, mostly that people like Hunt had their roles frequently shifted, but also that the terrain really didn't allow for it. Battles like Malvern Hill, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg were the exception on the terrain side, massing guns at places like Champion's Hill or Antietam was simply not doable because the sight lines didn't exist.

    • @BattleBunkerHQ
      @BattleBunkerHQ  2 года назад

      Hi Dan thanks for watching. Like we said in the piece, we never said it didn't happen, more that it was due to terrain or leadership on the whole that were reasons it didn't happen that often and is quite well documented. Historical topics are always of great debate as we all have our own interpretations form the many sources we read, that's what makes it interesting.

    24:22 This is certainly a huge misconseption about Confederate armies, infact by the end of the war they were better dressed than they were at the beginning of the war! The Central government took huge lengths to outfit their men and any serious uniformologist whos looked at Quartermaster reports will tell you that more often than not the Confederate army was well dressed and outfitted by their government. I'd check out Company of military historians article on Confederate jackets and you'll get a glimsp at the huge amount of clothing the government gave to its soldiers

I totally agree with the concept of let your vision determine your scale, and as I primarily am interested in the Grand Tactics of a battle, I'm currently painting up baccus 6mm armies and basing them for use with Greg Wagman's (Little Wars TV) Altar of Freedom rules.
    I found your video both entertaining and useful, well done on putting out there such material in a professional way. I'll definitely be looking for the other content you have produced, and hopefully will continue to produce.

    I’ve played wargames for nearly 70 years as a 10 year old. But more seriously since Don Featherstones book in the early 1960’s.
    But mostly since 1970 napoleonic wargames.
    I enjoyed the video and I’ve been toying with the idea of playing ACW games. I have some old strip minifigs (15mm) Fromm the mid 1970’s and recently bought some AB 15mm figures along with some books. I also bought some Pendraken 10mm figures.
    I am going to buy the book you recommended and I would certainly be interested in any more videos and if I can contribute.
    Are you all ACW gamers with miniatures?
    Any advice would be welcome.
    I think possibly that a ground scale of 1mm = 1 pace and a regiment of 500 men in 2 ranks would be 208 yards or 250 paces giving a battalion width in line of 250mm.
    So if a 15mm figure takes up 7.5mm then your miniature battle line would 33.3 figures wide so that would 66.6 figures in 2 ranks.
    That doesn’t match with WRG rules but that would be just over 3 masses of epic black powder miniatures.

    • @BattleBunkerHQ
      @BattleBunkerHQ  4 месяца назад

      Hi Leon, yeah the Don Featherstone books are a great source of our hobbies history, I certainly have a few on the shelf.
      I’ve Wargames the ACW in many scales, using many different sets of rules over the years. More recently we’ve done a few videos on our 28mm project. The advice I always give to anyone new or experienced wargamers is to have fun and build and play however you like.
      When I used to wargame the ACW in 10 and 15mm back in the 90s, I used to use the first edition of Fire and Fury. These are brigade level rules that allow you build a large force to be able to play some of the larger battles in a reasonable amount of time. These have had a second edition in more recent times, but I’ve yet to try them.
      Most traditional sets of rules used to use figure, time and ground scale, but more recently most rules reflect this in an abstract sort of way. My 28mm collection is based roughly around the 1:30 ish, with a regiment size of 20 - 24 miniatures. Again, traditionally 15mm ground scales were sometimes in the region of 1mm = 1 metre or yard. I do think that miniatures today are getting bigger and that too makes it difficult at times to accurately represent a figure / ground scale.
      I hope that helps a little and I wish you well exploring this period 😁.

Even today you will find them all over the place in Ontario where I live. Anywhere that they had lots of trees the farmers built them because they were cheap (raw materials were everywhere), easy to construct (no wire or nail’s required), and durable (many snake rail fences from the 19th century still exist where I live).

      Hi, thanks for watching and your question.
      Yes, in my opinion ACW and all wargaming can be played solo, there are many websites of people sharing their experiences of solo wargaming.
      I have also played a few ACW games solo using Pickets Charge rules. I write battle orders for each side and as the game unfolds I’ll roll a dice and see if they stick to their orders, or deviate from them. These orders can be as simple as attack X position and then hold once completed.
      Or, you could say, the army will attack and push the enemy force from the field, but will start with a spoiling attack on the left flank with 3rd brigade of 1st division.
      Hope that helps, take care 😁

    20 years ago, i started with Johnny Reb III and 1/72 plastic figures. I really enjoyed the rules, but the scale was too low for my taste. After that, I try different rules with 15mm figures.... and now playing with 6mm, struggling to create my own rules 😅
    For me 28mm are really too big, too expensive and don't give the feeling to play something ACW... You just fight with a bunch of soldiers around a farm. 😐

      Hi, thanks for watching, we appreciate it. I completely agree with you, we started playing 10mm Johnny Reb II many years ago before moving on to playing the original Bridge Fire and Fury and had lots of fun with them. It was only in the past few years that we have gone back into the period after visiting many of the Eastern battles.
      Your right 28mm on standard sized tables does mean your not using a lot of your toys, but we are quite lucky that we can play on a large table. But I do think playing in the smaller scales does give a better feel and look for the period though 😁.
      I like the sound of you writing your own rules, I hope you can get them where you want them. Take care 😁👍
