- In this episode, Little Wars TV takes you back to feudal Japan for one of the largest, bloodiest battles of the samurai era--Fourth Kawanakajima. Steve and Zach meditate in a Japanese garden, where they try to divine the true intentions of Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Kenshin. Was Shingen's Woodpecker plan a masterful maneuver or a classic blunder?
Then, back at the club, four players fight the wargame on an incredible 8'x6' tabletop with 6mm miniatures and the rules "Killer Katanas 2" by On Military Matters. Can Takeda Shingen repeat his great victory, or will Uesugi Kenshin smash his enemies on the banks of the river before it's too late? Thanks, Duc! Guys in our club have a lot of diverse interests, so we wanted our videos to cover a wide range of eras. So many conflicts to wargame, so little time to game them all....
I have never heard of Kawanakajima being considered a defeat for Uesugi, usually it is considered somewhat of a draw. Pretty sure the Woodpecker general committed a suicide assault in penance for his failed stategem during the fight, being shot dozens of times and collapsing to finally die on a hill nearby. He barely made it to the field as Kenshin was absolutely slaughtering Takeda.
Both sides saw serious casualties and deaths of major commanders(IIRC especially Takeda, who lost relatives) in what should have been a Takeda landslide. Pretty sure Kenshin also stopped Takeda's ambitions to advance further north forever with this fight, making it a clear strategic victory for the Uesugi overall

Another great wargame guys! Keep it up! Your quickly becoming my favorite war game channel on youtube. You've already got me re basing my 15mm armies on 40mm x 40mm for Age of Hannibal, and i'm looking at 10mm and 6mm armies to start collecting.
Because of Little Wars videos I've bought both of Greg's rulesets featured in the videos 😂 I have no regrets.

I must say I envy you guys. You have a tight crew that's always down to play those cool historics scenarios just for fun and i never see any salt in anyones behaviour. Where i live we have a huge tournament scene for WH40K and it's all cool but there's very little chill, it's impossible to find someone if you want to just chill and play and the historic scene is bunch of salty trolls so i can eithar have a competetive experience or none at all. I really envy that, i think it's wonderfull and unique and you should cherish that :D oh and also you have so many minis for different eras and so many systems - that's great :D !!
Thanks--we are quite fortunate here and luckily everyone in the club knows it! That being said, we've purposely cultivated a group of more relaxed gamers who are not 'tournament driven' or ppwer gamers or rules lawyers.
I play most of my games with counters and blocks. The rare times I get to push figures is at game conventions.
hentai shirt killed me XD keep up the amazing videos boys, would love to see more American civil war, or possibly lesser known wars, I always thought war of the triple alliance would be amazing for 6mm, you could use civil war miniatures and some of the battles in that war were intense and absolutely barbaric!

Its nice to see a Samurai game. Fuedal japan games seem kinda rare compared to ww2 or American civil war games.
The battlefield sounds to be really small if Kenshin could not defeat Shingen in a pitch battle before the mountain soldiers arrived. ususally such isolation would have been fatal.

Gents...that was super awesome! I've only played one Feudal Japanese type game, and that was with the Taiko rule system from Flagship[ Games. I'm sure in your next week rules review, you will unveil the issues with these rules and others? Again great stuff!!!

Cool video. I based my Peter Pig 15mm Samurai army on Kenshin's army from this battle. I recognized the radish banner of one of the units. I am not a fan of 6mm but you guys did a great job with the units and their basing. Love the "Pecker-talk." 🤣
Surprised I hadn't heard of you sooner! Just happened to see a friend post this video and thought I'd check it out, damn awesome! Will admit, I prefer full wargame reports, rather than summaries, but this was still a great watch!

It was a close call for the Takeda, for sure.
Their initial plan was not bad and made sense.
But it didn't really factor in that Kenshin also was a very good strategist and able to pull off such moves.
Therefore, the Takeda should have closely kept surveillance on the Uesugi forces, to react quickly, if they moved themselves.
A contingency plan for such an occasion should also have been put in place and agreed before the start of their initial maneuver.
The losses in this wargame also came very close to the estimated losses of the real battle, with Takeda losing ~4,000 and Uesugi ~3,000 men historically.
As a sidenote:
It was not the bloodiest samurai battle.
This title most likely goes to Sekigahara, which was the largest samurai battle with over 160.000 warriors involved. The lowest estimates of killed warriors start at 12,000 for that battle, going all the way up to over 40,000.

This is the second video I have watched on your channel. In both, cotton master Zach has worked his cloud magic in creation of beautiful fog of gunsmoke. Does he plan to demonstrate his art in a forthcoming video? Or is it to remain a carefully guarded trade secret?
That's not a bad idea. For a period of time we mocked Zach's attentiveness to fluffing the cotton "just so" and would would summon him to place cotton with the call of "cotton boy!"
But one day he impressed us so much with his artful teasing out of the cotton balls that Steve (if I recall correctly) promoted him. Ever since that fateful day Zach has been a cottonsman, no more a cotton boy.
This video is something really wonderful. The passion you transmit for this hobby is crazy, congratulations again. I would like to ask if there is a website or link were we can admire all those models you used for this battle

Maybe. And if so, he was wrong....
I love the look of this scale. I wish my friends enjoyed war games. The closest I can get them into is games like Star Wars legion, and that’s only because it’s Star Wars and they entertain my desire while I prepare for the next D&D campaign.

OK, so maybe a little late to the discussion here, could the Age of Hannibal rules be adjusted to suit this period? In the same way Warmaster Historical is a generic system used in Fantasy, Ancient and Mediaeval.
Age Of Hannibal is based on the Chipco Fantasy rules. They also published Chrysanthemum Throne which is for the Sengoku Jidai period. The rules are very similar and have some fun things in them. I use them for my Samurai battles.

Steve is, but no timetable for release at this point. Right now he’s working on an upcoming series of vids for the channel on a new aspect of the hobby he dove into recently. Look for that in the next month or two!

Where is the castle from?
Steve Hojnacki, I cant remember the exact manufacturer, but it is one of the many Japanese made plastic model kits put out of a large selection of Japanese castles. They tend to be in scales from 1/500 - 1/800, which is perfect as a piece of terrain for 6mm “big battles.”

Tales from Shed HQ, we just received a copy of Banzai from the author, and do plan on doing a review. It may be a little bit before it hits the channel, though. We insist on playing a ruleset several times before a review, and we already have a handful of other rule sets (from other periods) in line for reviews first. So many rules, so little time!
Little Wars TV great be interested in your opinions. I’m guessing 60mm x 30mm will be the norm for any future Rules from Steve?
Tales from Shed HQ, yes, the rules use 60x30mm basing as the default, but really any base size that has a 2:1 width to depth ratio would work just fine.

The garden is an incredible venue in Fairmont Park, Philadelphia. Our "Shofuso Teahouse Tour" video has a lot more information about the gardens. Highly recommended for anyone visiting the region, and a much more authentic experience than our comical Japanese language skills.

(Extra bonus if you go there on a holiday: WWII reenactors with BARs and live flamethrowers and such. Great fun! And I'm not just pimping for central Texas, since you toured the Alamo (a.k.a. downtown San Antoino); I'm really just pining for German food.)
