  • Why is Peterborough the worst city in England? If you’re one of my subscribers, you no doubt would have seen at least one of my videos about Peterborough. How I wish I had an opportunity to rank Peterborough among good cities! Unfortunately, the reverse has been the case. It’s been found among the five most hated cities in the United Kingdom. It once ranked among the worst cities to live in England. Please try and see my videos on this to understand the background. Responses from my subscribers who know enough to really comment about Peterborough show that the city deserves more attention. And we’ve vowed not to relent until things change there. Therefore, we are now fully focusing on Peterborough as the worst city to live in England.
    Where Is Peterborough?
Peterborough is such a famous city that doesn’t need to be described to anyone who knows a thing or two about cities in the UK. However, since there’s no harm in reiteration, we’ll take this route for the umpteenth time. Peterborough is a cathedral city and unitary authority area in Cambridgeshire. It was initially part of Northamptonshire before it was ceded to the present county in 1974.
It is located on the Nene River which flows some 30 miles (or 49 kilometers) to the northeast. Peterborough is about 76 miles (122 kilometers) from London. The city with the motto: “upon this rock I will build my church” is far cry from what the leader that made the promise over two thousand years ago had in mind. Today, people who know the city claim that Peterborough is the worst city to live in England.
    A View From the Past
The city whose original name was Medeshamstede before it was later changed to Burgh and later to what it is now, together with its surrounding areas has been inhabited for thousands of years. The city may have been established as early as 44 AD because the archeological finds from the first century contain numerous references to Peterborough in its original name. Going by that original name, it was likely an Anglian settlement around 655 AD when Sexwulf established a monastery on the parcel of land granted to him by Peada of Mercia. It was an important center for ceramic production during Roman civilization. Throughout the Middle Ages, the city featured in the history of Britain. It played some roles during the civil war.
The modern history that can help us understand how Peterborough inherited what would turn it into the worst city in England began in the 1840s. That was when railway lines began operating locally. The Great Northern Railway line from London to York was opened in 1850 and it transformed Peterborough from just a market town to an industrial center.
The rise and fall of various industries including brickmaking, sugar, and woodwork, contributed to the current plight of the city.
    Peterborough Today
Today's Peterborough covers an area of 132.58 square miles or 348.38 square kilometers. This is where you find over 200,000 people, most of who are unhappy with their city. Interestingly, Peterborough is a multi-ethnic society. About 82.5 percent of the city's residents are white, 11.7 percent Asian, 2.3 percent black, and 0.8 percent others, while 2.8 percent of the residents are mixed race. The population started growing rapidly with the arrival of railways in the 19th century. While the Second World War dealt some blow to this city’s population, it was designated a New Town in 1960.
It thereafter stopped being a center for brick manufacture and industrial employment fell. Today, most of the jobs available in the city are in financial services and distribution. Peterborough is at the Junction 15 of the A1/A1 (M) primary route.

I'm a born and bred Peterborian of 49 years. I'm proud to be Peterborian, but for me it's not the crime rate or the ignorant outsiders living here. Its the litter, and all the streets caked and plastered in dog shit that disgusts me.

What struck me the most is the pictures that were used for this video. They are like minimum 10 years old. For instance a shot of Woolworths, which closed its last shop back in 2009 not only in Peterborough but in all UK! While Peterborough is missing some most famous shopping brands, it certainly has some decent places to shop around with such shopping spots as Serpentine Green, Bortherhood and Peterborough One retail parks.
Non existent culture?! What about Divali festival, Italian days, Farmers, Beer and Harvester festivals, three theatres in town and cinema which had indeed renovated its all screens and seats few years ago. What about colledge a new university that just opened, swimming pools, sports stadium, ice skating. Peterborough had so many new housing developments, new schools, hotels and distribution centres built. We have beautiful and we'll looked after Nene Park which is loved by families. Surely that it clear indication that Peterborough is far from the worse one to live in.

Classifying Peterborough as the worst city to live in is a slip of tongue. Everything I need is within my reach. More over it takes 40 minutes to get to Kings Cross, you need to look at this again. There are a lot of places far more worst than Peterborough.

Yes, I miss it, and no it is NOT the worst city, there are plenty more places much more worthy of the worst title. The Peterborough problem is shown by the indecision as to where it belongs. When I was a girl, it was in Northamptonshire. Then they moved it to Huntingdonshire. Then Huntingdonshire was merged into Cambridgeshire. Then it was taken out of Cambridgeshire and made a Unitary Authority, effectively a county. Finally it was put under a joint mayor with Cambridgeshire. Before all of that, it was linked to Ely, which is a tiny city. Nobody seems to want Peterborough.

I find Peterborough more pleasant to live in than the commuter belt towns for London I've been to, plus a lot of the North London suburbs. There's a wider set of restaurants here, opening/closing times are really good, there's great countryside and life is convenient here. I also feel incredibly safe here. And being within an hour's reach of London is perfect for my work. Nowhere near as bad as what I heard from some people, and not as bad as some of the awful places I've been to in London.
On a side note, I think the cost of housing is influenced by Peterborough being within an hour of London. It is one of the vanishing affordable and commutable places to London.

Not true! Those who have not lived here before based their judgement on unreliable sources and on few searches! I personally find Peterborough one of the best places to live in merely because of its good location!! It’s dead in the middle of anywhere one desires to travel to…London, Cambridge, Nottingham, Birmingham all within easy reach and not too far away! Weather in Peterborough is extremely pleasant so that when the North suffers from flooding, heavy snowing with traffic problems/ accidents etc we in Peterborough remain well pleasant! The only complaint I have is recently due to the Covid pandemic and the economic downturn John Lewis become one of the casualties and now I have to go shopping online for some specific purchases … I have lived in Peterborough for well over 40 years and I know what I’m talking about!!

I was originally born in Peterborough back on the 09th of July 1993 and I used to live in Peterborough for 21 years and I used to have loads of new friends and did loads of sports and going to different schools and colleges.
Peterborough used to be a great city centre with loads of different shops and it was a really good place to go shopping back in the old years just before everything has changed and when I grow up into a proper adult I was thinking that Peterborough isn't a good place to live now because there anit enough places to walk round, not enough hills or countryside views or it is a flat area in the Cambridgeshire fens and not many shops there after when it closed down way before the covid.
So I would only come and visit Peterborough by seeing my friends and my dad's friends once a year but I wouldn't like to live in a house there again I just support Peterborough United by watching their live football match on TV and I'm just happy by living in a detached house in Shotton Colliery in County Durham up in the North East of England is a best place to live.

I’ve lived here in PE1 since 1994. It has certainly got worse since then. You talk about racism but it’s a fact it started going downhill in the mid 2000s. Nowadays the most popular piece of litter will be a Tyskie beer can -says it all. The Council are weak and inefficient, the Police are underfunded and two things I was taught: pavements are for pedestrians, and The Green Cross Code are long forgotten. However, the Parkway road system is pretty unique and means you can get to any part of the greater Peterborough area fairly easily. On the good side we have Nene Park (Ferry Meadows), several shopping parks, and a new cinema nearing construction. However we also have Lincoln Road in Millfield - notorious for those who know it. Peterborough is a bad city because of the scumbags; this reasonably small percentage of the population has this biggest detrimental effect.

I've been to Peterborough many times, it was the nearest city to go for bigger shopping for clothes etc growing up, and it is a run down city. There isn't any beauty or uplifting pockets to it and it is rough and awful. Bradford though gives it a run for the title of worst city, because that place is also terrible, everywhere looks uncared for, crime rates are bad, it is not a place you'd want to live, shop fronts are unkept and houses look like the landlords or owners have given up or can't afford to make them look presentable. It has one big park that used to be the big house of a wealthy man and now turned into a museum type, you can walk there, it holds fairs etc, but it is still a place to pass through. Bradford and Peterborough are cities to avoid or, if you have to, then get out of both places fast and keep going.

    Video title seems click baitey.
That said there were some truths but plenty of misinformation.
Maybe the intention was to produce something light hearted.
In the 10 years I’ve lived in Peterborough it seems the policing has been cut back (and crime has become far more serious).
The tents in open spaces (Embankment) have largely gone, the makeshift subway shanty towns seem to be a thing of the past and aggressive begging in the centre is on the wane.
No mention made about the beautiful cathedral, Ferry meadows or the heritage railway. No mention about the terrible driving of some cab drivers, the loss of the quaint indoor market that was hastily demolished, no mention of the now demolished traffic division police building on the roundabout at the beginning of Bourges Boulevard (replaced by another hotel). No mention of the new university, ad hoc car boot markets, classic car shows and what about the beer / gin / rum festivals. How about the quirky Rail World?
I hate how Peterborough is being taken over by the illegal street racers who hold drifting events that the police seem powerless to stop.
There’s lots and lots to Peterborough and the population is ever changing as those from the London etc. discover house prices that are genuinely low compared to many areas 50-100 miles South of Peterborough.
I’ve definitely seen the cost of housing in Peterborough rise dramatically compared to 10 years ago.

I lived there 1964-1987 and regularly go back. It was always a backwater but the town centre has now been hollowed out which was btw always small for a town centre with its population size. The population has doubled since 87 and so has the traffic but there is no where to go and nothing to do because a lot of the pubs, bars, shops restaurants and clubs have closed. IMHO there is little culture, low aspiration, much poverty, the landscape and scenery is uninspiring and walk around the town centre (much begging and drug and drink taking) most of the people look haggard because they have had a hard life and they obviously haven't looked after themselves either.

I was born and raised in Peterborough from 1964 to 1982. I go back every single year to see my family. Yes it had changed and yes it could do with a face-lift for sure. But although I've been gone foe these many years, it's still my home and I'm proud to call it so. It's ironic that I live in Phoenix AZ now because like the Phoenix, Peterborough will rise again. Clean the nene and they will return.

I've left Peterborough for Bristol for 2 years and believe me I just counted days to come back to Peterborough to normal rent prices, 30mph in the city speed and general close to London feel. Bristol was like vilage in the middle of nowhere where you had to share houses with crackheads if you refused to pay artificially inflated london prices and stoll be left with some money. Also wages in Bristol were meh for the same profession.

The first thing to welcome you out of the train station is the ugly multistorey carpark, with anti-suicide fences all around the top, you then walk into the city centre and see statues of people standing on the top of buildings looking like they are about to jump off. I think they are statues anyway.

The pratt that did the commentary for this video needs to go do some up to date research. As a few people on this thread have mentioned some of the pictures are well over 10-15 years old. Yes some of the streets are dirty and grubby but on the whole Peterborough is not the worse city to live. I'd love to know where they get the reports of people being racist too ! Take a look at some of the other City's around like Nottingham, Bedford and Leicester ! You only have to watch the evening news to see those places getting more bad news than Peterborough. Living here for well over 50years I've seen the changes but it's certainly not the worse place to live.

I've been living here for more then 6 years now and I have to say, stats alone or reputation from the pas do not give this City justice. Yes it has it's problems, as every bigger city. Yes there are bad neighbourhoods - show me a city without them. But... you can choose to live in places like Hampton Lakes/Gardens or other good neighbourhoods. There you will find schools, shopping centres, parks, restaurants etc. Nene park is a fantastic place to spend time in the summer & the cinema mentioned in the video looks outdated but only from the outside. If you want to go eat out, there is a multitude of good restaurants to choose from (from inexpensive ones to Michelin rated). Connections are good to all major areas of UK and if you drive anywhere in the city it typically takes you 10-15min. to get there. Until recent there price to buy a property compared to earnings was not that bad, although now it changes quite fast (but again it's not far from other regions in the UK). Have a friend who lived in Cambridge and said he'd never want to live in PTB, some time ago he needed to move here due to a new job. His perspective changed dramatically in just 6 months. IMHO it all depends on you, your attitude and your choice of the neighbourhood you will live in & people you send time with. Yes the better ones are more expensive (it's normal and the same in all cities in UK) but it's a choice you need to make yourself. Do you want to go that extra mile to earn more and have a better life or do you want to get stuck and spend your days on Lincon Road.

  • @dirtywetdogboatsandsailing6805

For sure it's a soul-less place even after it got cleaned up......I think though that nearby Leicester and Northampton are worse......and yes I lived in Pboro in the 1970's and couldn't wait to get out.

The worst city to live, showing the most outdated photos of where folk live. Peterborough’s worst move was handing it over to the council, when it was the Housing Corporation it was a nice place,h then it went down hill, the town centre has gotten worse since John Lewis closed,it’s full of pound shops, betting shops and vape shops.Shops closed like Beales and they are turned into more flats, the cinema they spent millions on transforming the centre didn’t happen as we all predicted

I think this video is extremely inaccurate 😂. Compared to larger cities Peterborough’s cost of living is quite low. Compare the rent for the 2 beds here to the likes of London etc. Yes on average the pay here is lower, however we are close enough to London for commutes to higher paying jobs if needed. Peterborough’s city centre is the down side due to lack of shops, yet we are close to Cambridge, Leicester, London if we need more variety. We have beautiful nature spots here, lots of walking and biking routes to enjoy. Racism is the same as anywhere else in the uk.

Look part of the problem is the city over the years had to sacrifice for housing and housing and housing and because of this has taken most of the History away.
Where the Queensgate shopping centre is,was once a wealth of history and the old Cumbergate area all been destroyed and has ruined the historic value of the place.
The city looks out of Sync with all the modernisation and even now the commercial side like good night venues and pubs are being knocked down in favour of housing and parking ,and now having to go to other cities for a better nightlife experience .
Also going on a night out don’t seem friendly as it used to be.
In Wetherspoons I got forced out by a bouncer when I only lost my balance when I walked to the bar, I was not behaving in a rude or drunk way, he prob thought I was drunk which I was not.
I even had reports of people not allowed in clubs just by how they looked even though they were fashionable or smart, again unfriendly vibe
The council even wanted to knock down the Broadway way venue which has historic value, and it is only because the people got together and made a petition to save it,-and now hosts good entertainment and musicals all through the year
The city is in more favour over capital then commercial ideas and it also seems to lack creativity or an Artistic influence which creates a cold vibration all around the City
The city is now having a lot of regeneration and new Cinema and University but we still have a long way to go

Unlikely to be the worst city to live in but it's certainly gone seriously downhill. You'll be hard pushed to find an original Peterborian over the age of about 45 who enjoys a vist to the City Centre, in fact most avoid it like the plague. Apart from football matches a police presence is zero. Streets full of litter, roads and pavements constantly being dug up, and what on earth was the point of those fountains in the square. I'm not a fan of the council but they did go to a lot of trouble to ban begging, drinking and anti sociable behaviour in the centre, only for the police to refuse to enforce it. Hard pushed to hear English beaing spoken at times. Westgate has become a racetrack, it's only a matter of time before a pedestrian is seriously injured or worse. But when all said and done it's my City, and I suppose I reluctantly still have an affection for it.

After visiting Peterborough, i feel its set in time. The high crime is concerning, but the whole of the country is experiencing the same thing. Until the Police, step up and stop being woke, we will not see a change, plus the government need to step up and stick to promises. It has been proven integration was not taken seriously by the government, which is also causing most of the issues we see across the country, and not just Peterborough. The council also need to put more funding resources back into the area, but this needs to be used in a positive way, as there is lots claiming funding, but the claims are made fraudulently, there needs to be a process of "on the spot" checks to know the business plan submitted is being processed and the funding money provided, needs to be given in pieces and not all in one bulk payment. There needs to be businesses of attracting tourists and people out of the area to the area, to put Peterborough back on the map, so its user friendly, safe environment and people friendly not just ascetic to look at. The streets also need cleaned up.

Wow. What prejudiced and nasty video this is. And poorly researched. The main cinema, for example, was refurbished a few years ago. A new one under construction in the centre of town. There are three theatres so not sure where the nonsense about culture comes from.
The mild whiff of xenophobia when saying the problem is integration - not sure you bothered to talk to younger inhabitants, or any to be honest.
Architecture - you made almost no mention of the cathedral or its precincts, or Longthorpe Tower or Flag Fen amongst other things. The history was disjointed and scrappy.
No go areas. There are none. Like any city there are rough areas and nicer areas but this no go nonsense comes straight from people stirring up hatred.
Peterborough is not perfect. Far from it but your portrait is so poor and one sided as to be worthless. Perhaps you could visit the place.

Of course there have been changes to the landscape and types of employment but that is down to the changes in manufacturing in general. You spoke about racism within Peterborough tbh where ever you go in the world, there will be racism. It's not unique to Ptown. Saying that there are "chavs" in the city centre is just your opinion and not based on any actual facts. You're commenting on how people are dressed. The amount of hotels that are being built in Peterborough would indicate that people want to at least visit the area.

    Peterborough’s positives
    1. You can get anywhere within the city within 15/20 minutes.
    2. You can travel to other cities with ease, Peterborough has one of the best transport links in England.
    3. Schools, there are loads of schools both primary and secondary of which for the most part are good schools.
The issue is there are far more negatives than positives, some of which mentioned in this video but the main thing for me is the people, the city it full of selfish, racist, low-life individuals
