Wow - thank you SO MUCH for this! I'm currently trying to wrap my mind around producing character animation within After Effects and this is so valuable for people like me! THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
I will try my first character animation, and confused about which plugin is the best. Your video is perfect, thank you very much. As I understood, limber is a good choice for a first start.
Hi Megan, Just randomly came across this video of yours and wanted to thank you for the great comparison which shows all the important bits in a very short and logical presentation. I was particularly quite surprised to find out how FK/IK switching is realised in Limber and DUIK. (Clumsy!) Since you seem to focus on AE, you're probably unfamiliar with our work. We develop the popular Flanimate Power Tools for Flash / Animate and have designed our own rigging system where joints are magnetic and FK and IK are simultaneously available at all times... On and off I look at demos what the AE systems offer, but I haven't had the time to actually install and try any of them... Your video was the best comparison I've seen, showing the real important stuff. Thanks again! Keep up the great work! - Nick
Hi Nick! I appreciate your comment! I haven’t done much work in Animate (at least it’s been a while) but I’ll have to check out your tools because that sounds really handy. Thanks for the kind words.
Not yet, but I plan on doing a Skillshare class and/or tutorials showing how I rig an entire human character. In the meantime, the I have two Skillshare classes that go into rigging and animation (they just don't show that rig that you see at 7:14). Those classes are: Character Rigging & Animation FUNdamentals: skl.sh/3hjCRpV and Limber Character Rigging to Secondary Animation: skl.sh/3u0MfUb
You made a great video. Best thing about the video is you have used each and every second to provide information. There is no marketing and other bullshit. Thank you for made my day :) Love from India
If you only want to learn one character rigging and animation plug-in, my personal recommendation would be Limber. I'm sure other motion designers will have different opinions, but I think Limber has the best balance of features while still being easy to use/learn.
You can add a stroke around your entire limb in Limber or Rubberhose so that when the limb moves the stroke still outlines the entire limb. With Duik, the only way I can think of at the moment, is to add a stroke to each layer of the limb (for example, the upper arm and lower arm). The issue with this is that you’d see the outline overlapping where the layers meet at the joint. If you mean that your character’s limbs are made of strokes, could rig them with Duik, but you may be better off converting them to shapes or recreating them with Limber or Rubberhose.
I cannot parent the hand to limber arm. I tried parenting a random shape to it, no use. And parented the hand to body or foot which worked, so hand has no problem. Can anyone tell me what's wrong?
What layer are you parenting the hand to? It should be parented to the Limber wrist controller. But, in order for the hand to stay parented in FK mode, you’ll need to create an additional FK wrist controller. There’s a button in the Limber panel to create this controller. Then parent the hand to this layer and it will work in both FK and IK modes. Hope that helps!
5:51 When you have a hand or something attached to limber do you can only animate it in IK??? Is there a way to animate it in fk??? How do I get that layer: "Limber Wrist FK""???
There is a way to have a hand or foot attached to a limb when it is in FK mode. In order to make this work, you need to create an additional controller using the "Add FK" button in Limber. This will create a controller called something like "L-Wrist FK". You'll need to parent the hand to this controller. Now your hand should be attached to the arm whether you're in IK or FK mode. All that is explained in my class, if it's easier to watch a video on this: skl.sh/3hjCRpV

Hey Megan, thanks for featuring Limber.

Thanks-glad to hear!
This is exactly what I am looking for,you seemed to be the only one who explained how to FK characters with duik.

you explain very well!
Thanks Sophie!

Thanks!
Super.. You explained it very clearly. thankyou verymuch
Thank you for this video.. highly appreciated
I like your way, it's so clear explain. Thank you so much. 👍👍 I hope see new things about animation for short cartoon.
Exactly what I was looking for. Will definitely check your skillshare class.
nice tutorial. tq
This was really helpful. Plus, I downloaded the cheatsheet. Thanks
Good to hear, thanks!
Thanks madam
7:14 It looks perfect. Is there a place to watch this rig in its full?

@@animation-explained presently i am using Bao Bones, i'll definitely try Limber too now, thanks
can you add a stroke to the limbs in any of the tools? My characters have strokes rather than just flat shapes
