The last time it happened to me, it was a decade ago. I just received a guitar, quite an old one and the strings were like oder than me. I replaced them and it was O.K.
When gigging - change strings often. These days strings are generally better than they used to be and string breakages is rare during a show - PROVIDING you change them every 2 or 3 gigs minimum.

String care is important. Best to research the guitar string brands that won't break in a week or less.
String breakage isn't just the strings' fault, a lot of times, it's user error.
Wash your hands thoroughly, wipe the strings down when you're done, every time you change strings, check the nut, saddles, and string tree for burrs, and also lubricate those points.
I've been playing for 25 years, and I have not broken a string since 2000.
