Just so you know, this song is the band goofing on their manager. While they were out in a city they didn't know, he accidentally stumbled into a gay bar and didn't realize it at first. He was drinking and this chick was talking him up...and then he realized she was actually a dude LOL. They had to clown him for that.

The Kinks were a very sophisticated but young group that had the Davies brothers (Ray & Dave) as creators....writers & performers. They wrote subtle & overt socio-political lyrics AND some very tender, mature material that separated them from everybody else. They crashed the charts with a seminal Rock n' Roll chart "You Really Got Me" that spawned a fantastic Brit garage band sound....and "All Day & All of the Night".. Like Humble Pie mixed with Small Faces and range to their writing and production, you could identify a Kinks song by the guitar tone and voice/lyrics...more thoughtful but still bangers...and interesting. Defined their own quality, unique niche.

What a great band, up there with the Stones and the Beatles in my opinion. The Lola vs Powerman album is one of their best. A few other good ones from this album are "Top of the Pops", "This Time Tomorrow", and "Strangers". A few other Kinks classics are "Victoria", "Well Respected Man", "All Day and All of the Night", "Till the End of the Day", "Do It Again", and "Better Things."

The champagne tasted like Coke because is WAS largely Coke. Clubs would serve gin-and-tonics that were pretty heavy on the tonic; if they go stingy on the alcohol, you have to buy more to get drunk.
Ray Davies (songwriter, vocals, rhythm guitar) first started paying attention to the gay portion of his audience when the band was in San Francisco in 1964 and he was singing a song that had the lyric "he likes his fags the best", not knowing that while "fags" was simply British slang for cigarettes, it had a DIFFERENT meaning out by the SF bay…
So when a friend of the band would invite them to drag clubs, Ray got the inspiration.
Someone in the comments below notes that they were lucky to get this one past the censors…well, they couldn't get it past Coca-Cola! For the radio version, they had to record the line as "cherry cola", taking the brand name out of it. (Ray has always sung "Coca-Cola" in concert, though.)
The "Lola" song you sing at the beginning was not originally from whatever ad you saw, but from the stage musical "Damn Yankees", with Gwen Verdon as Lola. I don't know if you review Broadway songs, but the film is probably on RUclips, so you can react to Verdon's performance, if you want.

The kinks were a top band till they were banned from the USA. Then they finally got the ban lifted. This song hit the top of the charts but it hurt them in the long run. The scuttle but was they were gay and at that time being gay was a popularity damper if not a popularity killer. Anyway, you look at it this song what is a Way a head of its time.

A dark voice has to do with moving your jaw long and your cheeks in as opposed to a light voice with your lips pulled back in a smile and your chin high. It has to do with length versus roundness of the resonating cavity. You get the same extremes between a round string instrument like a banjo at one end and a long skinny one like a violin at the other. Brown is also a reference to the second deepest part of a human voice. You get a little bit of buzz. Allow it and you've also got the upper chest range above it then the midstrange then the head voice and then the falseeto. A lot of operas have a darker voice and most pop music is ultra light in its tones. The queen song with four voices has a much darker voice flavor compared to his normal singing tone.

Dark brown voice referred to the person Lola that their manager was seeing at the club. Lola was dark skin. The manager did not realize what he had in his hands. This song is based on a true event. So the dark brown voice refers to Lola her\his skin color.

Of course, the censors came down heavily on this one... No - not for the transgender/cross-dressing theme but for using a commercial brand name, which was definitely not allowed on the BBC (the British Broadcasting Company, fondly known to generations of Brits as 'Auntie'). So, for the UK market, the lyrics had to be changed from 'Coca-Cola' to 'cherry cola'.
The point of the 'champagne' tasting like something other than champagne is that it wasn't genuine champagne but a cheap substitute... and that it was THAT kind of bar. Lots of seedy places like that in 'old Soho', London's red light district back in the 1960s. Being a young and innocent lad, fresh from the country, these clues went over his head; he didn't know what sort of place he was in until it was a bit late and he'd already fallen for the lovely (if slightly scary) Lola....
...Just as the real meaning of the song went over the censors' (and most of our) heads with a giant Whoosh! They were definitely more innocent times, and Ray Davies broke new ground when he penned this fun masterpiece, based on a real life experience one of their managers had, out on the town in a strange city. He didn't get that the big strong woman he'd been smooching with all night was a guy until the early hours of the morning, when the stubble began to come through... 🙂

Lola wasn’t transgender he was a transvestite ( completely different terms ). Also the actual event took place in a Paris nightclub. “ Soho “ was better for the lyrics. 9:26

@@cheryla7480 Thanks for the comment and for the information about the events that inspired the song taking place in Paris, not London. As to whether the original and/or fictional Lola was transgender or a transvestite, I understand of course they are two different things, but I'm not sure it's so clear-cut from the lyrics which category Lola would have identified with.
When the narrator says (sings) "I'm glad I'm a man and so's Lola" I don't think that's necessarily proof that Lola identified as a man. It could just mean that he (the narrator) sees her as a man. If this was said today, it would be highly 'incorrect', if Lola was trans. But, back then the language around these issues was not as developed as it is now, and neither was the depth of understanding of the issues in the general population.
Furthermore, surgery and hormonal treatments were not readily accessible, so a trans woman might retain all her masculine physical features, which would make it more likely someone from the outside might understand her to be a man. That's why I used the phrase "transgender/ cross-dressing" to describe the theme, rather than just cross-dressing or transvestite, since to me, it was not 100% clear which it was..
I hope this makes some sort of sense! As the mother of a transgender woman, I have no wish to offend anyone dealing with these issues; quite the opposite, in fact! I apologise if anyone's feelings were inadvertently hurt, or principles disrespected by what I've said - which is simply my opinion; others may draw different conclusions about the song and the 'Lola' character, and that's fine by me.
I do thank you for bringing up the issue, and thus offering the opportunity for an open discussion around these sensitive questions.
