1993 Dicaprio and Fiennes should have been the first tie in a supporting role category in Oscars . The statuette went eventually to Tommy Lee Jones in the Fugitive.
excellent list! totally agree with Ralph Fiennes at number 1! and i also glad to see Jake Gyllenhaal i still cant believe that George Clooney won that year! i will add 1 more: Eddie Murphy - Dreamgirl he was robed!
Another great list! Thoroughly agree with number one - Fiennes is one of the best of his generation, though still Oscar-less. He was so incredible in "Schlindler's List" that you forgot what a totally gorgeous man he is, physically, and focused solely on the evilness of the character.
1) Willem Defoe in Platoon 2) Gary Sinise in Forrest Gump 3) Tommy Lee Jones in Lincoln 4) Robert Duvall in Apocalypse Now 5) Edward Norton in Primal Fear 6) Tom Cruise in Magnolia 7) Al Pacino in The Godfather 8) Karl Malden in On The Waterfront 9) Casey Affleck in The Assassination of Jesse James 10) Jake Gyllenhaal in Brokeback Mountain 11) Brad Dourif in OFOtCN 12) Brad Pitt in Twelve Monkeys 13) Ed Harris in Apollo 13 14) Sal Mineo in RWaC 15) Bruce Davidson in Longtime Companion
Good list. I would have Cruise for Magnolia Hoffman for The Master and DeNiro for Silver Linings playbook. Also how the hell did DeNiro not even get nominated for an oscar for This Boys Life.
Great video and great list! I personally would've loved to see Sam Jaffe from The Asphalt Jungle get some recognition, but I guess you can't always get what you want.
My consensus: 25-22: Have not seen... 21: Karl Malden gave a wonderful performance in On the Waterfront! He should have won! 20-16: Have not seen... 15: Have the movie, but still have not seen it.... 14: Jack Nicholson was perfect for his role! A great performance! 13-11: Have not seen... 10: Geoffrey Rush was amazing in The King's Speech! He deserved to win! 9-3: Have not seen... 2: Claude Rains was phenomenal in Casablanca! He is one of my favorite Best Supporting Actor nominees (winners included) of All Time! Either he or Charles Bickford (The Song of Bernadette) should have won! Personally. I think Claude Rains should be #1! 1: Ralph Fiennes gave a fantastic performance in Schindler's List! He was very deserving of the Oscar!
Philip Seymour Hoffman in The Master is the most mind-boggling loss to me, that's like a top 10 or 15 at least all time performance to me. Also Hoffman in Doubt (even though Ledger deserved to win), those two performances could've pretty easily been in the lead actor category too
Laurence Olivier in Marathon Man he was so Brilliant in that movie glad you included it thank you! Samuel L Jackson in Pulp Fiction one of the best movie I ever saw him in thanks you for including that too!
I must say, Al Pacino (The Godfather) and Jake Gyllenhaal (Brokeback Mountain) were nominated in the wrong category. They should have been nominated for Lead Actor. The Academy must love being wrong or something.
Yes! Ralph Fiennes gave one of the greatest performances of all time in Schindler's List. He deserved to be number one :) Also, I'm happy you put Claude Raines up there. He is such a good actor!
1. Casey Affleck - The Assassination of Jesse James... 2. Michael Clarke Duncan - The Green Mile 3. Montgomery Clift - Judgment at Nuremberg 4. Robert Duvall - Apocalypse Now 5. Ralph Fiennes - Schindler's List 6. Laurence Olivier - Marathon Man 7. Claude Rains - Casablanca 8. Jack Nicholson - Easy Rider 9. Joaquin Phoenix - Gladiator 10. Sessue Hayakawa - The Bridge on the River Kwai
Nice list. Some others that deserved a mention imo (in no particular order): Claude Rains - Mr. Smith Goes To Washington Jackie Earle Haley - Little Children Benicio Del Toro - 21 Grams Robert Mitchum - Story Of G.I Joe Edward Norton - Primal Fear Dean Stockwell - Married To The Mob & also some that came after this list Michael Shannon - Nocturnal Animals Tommy Lee Jones - Lincoln
My Top: 1.Ralph Fienes: A lista de schindler 2.Samuel L Jackson: Pulp Fiction 3.Al Pacino: The Godfather 4.Claude Rains: Casablanca 5.Willian H.Macy:Fargo 6.Robert Duvall: Apocalipse Now 7. Michael Clarke Duncan: The Green Mile 8.Tom Berenger and Willem Dafoe: Platoon 9. Joe Pesci: Ranging Bull 10. Geofrey Rush: The King´s Speech

Glad to see Jack Nicholson made this list, but I must say, he should've been higher. He was a force to be reckoned with in A Few Good Men. I also would've added Jason Miller for The Exorcist, Pat Morita for The Karate Kid, Gary Sinise for Forrest Gump, Michael Clarke Duncan for The Green Mile (still lower than Haley Joel Osment, Osment should've won), Joaquin Phoenix for Gladiator, Eddie Murphy for Dreamgirls and Stanley Tucci for The Lovely Bones. Are you going to do one
Great list! I enjoyed this and the comments, If it were my list or to shuffle, Rush or DiCaprio would at least be #2, Robert Preston would make a #2 also, Laurence Olivier tho a great great actor he wouldn't be included on my list & Nicolson would be way up on the list. I was searching for a theme song and ended up looking at some of the clips from movies and came upon your list. Rush doesn't get the credit he deserves, when he sat on the King's throne (The Kings Speech) that was a great scene. "Quills" one of my favorites with Rush & Joaquin Phoenix, Kate Winslet. Tim Roth is another who doesn't get the credit he deserves. "Reservior Dogs" where he is bleeding to death and "The Legend of 1900" Ralph Fiennes in "Spider" was great I'll be a critic IMO Casey Affleck cannot act, I didn't care for the Jesse James movie. Off topic, I always wondered why "Legends of the Fall or A Time to Kill" never won an award for best actor or picture, other awards are mentioned but Pitt in Legends & McConaughey in Time to Kill, were terrific, I think that was McConaughey best role, Sam Jackson was in that also, and Legends of the Fall had Anthony Hopkins and Aiden Quinn in that also, IMO they should have rec'd awards. I think some people believe the critics. Its hard to compare the roles isn't it? when I seen Lou Gosset for Officer & Gent running against Robert Preston for Victor Victoria how do they choose best actor, completely different roles, it would be a tie to me. Thanks again I enjoyed it.

A agree with Finnes, Gyllenhaal and Samuel L. Jackson, I think that was very good to Martin Landau to win for his performance of Bela Lugosi but should have been a tie between them!
Wow thanks for totaly avoiding my question. I admit he was much better in Lincoln and No country for old men then The Fugitive. I mean he had such an easy to play in The Fugitive that even an extra could have done it just as well.
Well.....Jasonmovieguy.....before I watched this clip .....I guessed your number one actor, and I was right !! Thank you. I think Tommy Lee Jones won that year for The Fugitive.
I think now in retrospect the list would look like this: 1) Willem Defoe 2) Gary Sinise 3) Erich von Stroheim 4) Robert Duvall 5) Edward Norton 6) Tom Cruise 7) Al Pacino 8) Tommy Lee Jones 9) Sydney Greenstreet 10) Brad Dourif 11) Jason Miller 12) Jake Gyllenhaal 13) Ed Harris 14) Joe Pesci 15) Geoffrey Rush [sorry, not enough characters for the films] What would have been your picks for the top 15?
10) Love that movie! 7) Love that movie, too! 1) Has not seen the movie, but he is a brilliant actor! Just a question: Where is Ian McKellen (as Gandalf in "The Lord of the Rings; The Fellowship of the Ring", 2001) and Kenneth Branagh (as Laurence Olivier in "My Week With Marilyn"; 2011)????
Very good list! but did you consider the people they lost the oscar too? for example, while casey affleck was great in the assassination of jesse james by the coward robert ford, javier bardem in no country for old men was one the creepiest villains ever portrayed, and absolutely deserved to win!
I agree with a lot on this list it's a great list the list is life lol but I think Greg Kinnear should have been somewhere there for As Good As It Gets it's an ok movie but he was magnificent!!!
Fiennes, Olivier, Duvall, SL Jackson, Rains, Nicholson(Easy Rider would've been another one Jack should've won) all GREAT choices. Unbelievably Robert Shaw not nominated for Jaws, John Cazale for Godfather 1&2 & Dog Day Afternoon, Burt Reynolds & Ned Beatty for Deliverance and Sterling Hayden for Dr. Strangelove. All brilliant performances!
Great list, although I would like to see Joaquin Phoenix for "Gladiator" and Montgomery Clift for "Judgment at Nuremberg" in the TOP 10. It was Clift's last chance for an Oscar and what a chance... Your Number One is not negotiable, though ;-)
You know, it would be great if I could read comments on RUclips without coming across so much gross and foul language, and emotional, hotheaded attitudes. Is this really all that important? Get a grip on yourselves and get a life.
No he did do very good for what he was given. I think I am harsh on that performance beacause it did NOT desrve an Oscar over Ralph Fiennes (schindler's list) Leonardo DiCaprio (what's eating gilbert grape) or John Malkvocih (in the line of fire)
Joaquin Phoenix in Gladiator shit all over Benicio Del Toros mumbling plain cop in Traffic and should have been in this list before at least half of them...
you know I feel like I should be insulted but I'm more or less confused than insulted, I mean; Random? That's the best insult you can come up with? I don't even what you're trying to get a cross; that the actors are different, that the movies are different, the years, decades, WHAT?!? are you trying to imply it doesn't have anything to do with the video... well, that's clearly wrong. If you're gonna say the list is bad, then ok. but saying that it's random doesn't even make sense by definition.
Fiennes robbed for Schindlers list, William H Macy Fargo and Tom Cruise Magnolia. Duvall Apocalypse Now. Pacino was lead actor in Godfather. Sam Jackson Pulp Fiction.
Either Ralph Fiennes or Leonardo DiCaprio should have won that year, how in all of hell did the VERY average Tommy Lee Jones beat them?! His performance was notihng special at all, he did not transform himself in any way whatsoever! It is tied for the WORST best supporting actor choice of all time, neck and neck with Benicio Del Toro winning for Traffic over Joaquin Phoenix for Gladiator.

Good list. I would have Cruise for Magnolia Hoffman for The Master and DeNiro for Silver Linings playbook. Also how the hell did DeNiro not even get nominated for an oscar for This Boys Life.

1: Ralph Fiennes gave a fantastic performance in Schindler's List! He was very deserving of the Oscar!
While Geoffrey Rush was good on The King's Speech, Bale absolutely deserved his win
#1.Ralph Fiennes (Schindler's list)
#2.Tim Roth (Rob Roy)
#3.Joaquin Phoenix (Gladiator)
#4.Leonardo DiCaprio (What's eating Gilbert Grape)
#5.Jackie Earle Hayley (Little Children)

Jordan Alford Jason probably just forgot him.
***** I did not like that movie, but he was great.
Where is Brad Dourif in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest?
edward norton in primal fear?
Philip Seymour Hoffman in The Master is the most mind-boggling loss to me, that's like a top 10 or 15 at least all time performance to me. Also Hoffman in Doubt (even though Ledger deserved to win), those two performances could've pretty easily been in the lead actor category too
Jack Nicholson-Easy Rider, Jackie Gleason-The Hustler, Jack Palance-Shane, Richard Widmark-Kiss Of Death as well as what you listed.
So pleasantly surprised in your #2!!
Laurence Olivier in Marathon Man he was so Brilliant in that movie glad you included it thank you! Samuel L Jackson in Pulp Fiction one of the best movie I ever saw him in thanks you for including that too!
Nice, you should make one aswell for Top 25 Supporting ACTRESSES Nominees that LOST Oscar cuz there has been some major snibs in that category
I was waiting for Paul Giamatti's performance in "Cinderella Man"
I must say, Al Pacino (The Godfather) and Jake Gyllenhaal (Brokeback Mountain) were nominated in the wrong category. They should have been nominated for Lead Actor. The Academy must love being wrong or something.
Nice list. You should do a list of the top 15 worst best supporting actor winners
So happy you added Sir Ian McKellan
Yes! Ralph Fiennes gave one of the greatest performances of all time in Schindler's List. He deserved to be number one :) Also, I'm happy you put Claude Raines up there. He is such a good actor!

Are you going to do one
Samuel L. Jackson KNEW he was robbed "AH SHIT!"
I don't see why Samuel L Jackson is not the leading role in Pulp Fiction? Who is?
And why wasn't Justin Henry on this list ( at number one)!
@katsimpordas, it's the best that lost, not who should have won.

Tim Roth is another who doesn't get the credit he deserves. "Reservior Dogs" where he is bleeding to death and "The Legend of 1900"
Ralph Fiennes in "Spider" was great
I'll be a critic IMO Casey Affleck cannot act, I didn't care for the Jesse James movie.
Great List!! But instead I would replace #4 with James Caan in the Godfather.
Joaquim Phoenix for Gladitor should be 1
Benicio Del Toro for 21 Grams, Burt Reynolds for Boogie Nights, Michael Clarke Duncan for The Green Mile - those are some I thought were deserving.
Where is Alec Guinness for Star Wars?? He was amazing in that film and deserved an oscar.
1:20.Shadow of the Vampire should have won best picture that year. Overlooked gem.
Oh realy? Please tell me something that he did in that performance that was above average?
This is a great list but I think that William Hurt in "A History of Violence" should be on here. Cmon now he was great in that movie lol
Well.....Jasonmovieguy.....before I watched this clip .....I guessed your number one actor, and I was right !! Thank you. I think Tommy Lee Jones won that year for The Fugitive.
I think now in retrospect the list would look like this:
1) Willem Defoe
2) Gary Sinise
3) Erich von Stroheim
4) Robert Duvall
5) Edward Norton
6) Tom Cruise
7) Al Pacino
8) Tommy Lee Jones
9) Sydney Greenstreet
10) Brad Dourif
11) Jason Miller
12) Jake Gyllenhaal
13) Ed Harris
14) Joe Pesci
15) Geoffrey Rush [sorry, not enough characters for the films]
What would have been your picks for the top 15?
Tom Cruise on Magnolia and Philip Seymour Hoffman on The Master.
Jack Nicholson should have won for A Few Good Men.
there's missing Tim Roth in "Rob Roy"
10) Love that movie!
7) Love that movie, too!
1) Has not seen the movie, but he is a brilliant actor!
Just a question: Where is Ian McKellen (as Gandalf in "The Lord of the Rings; The Fellowship of the Ring", 2001) and Kenneth Branagh (as Laurence Olivier in "My Week With Marilyn"; 2011)????
Al Pacino for The Godfather should be #2, and Tom Cruise for Magnolia should be on the list. But great list anyway.
Very good list! but did you consider the people they lost the oscar too? for example, while casey affleck was great in the assassination of jesse james by the coward robert ford, javier bardem in no country for old men was one the creepiest villains ever portrayed, and absolutely deserved to win!
Some of the nominees lost to worthy opponents in your previous video, the best Supporting Actor winners ever.
And George C.Scott for Dr Strangelove
Peter Bull for Dr. Strangelove
Tim Roth in Rob Roy, that should be #1 or #2!
Joaquín Phoenix should have won the Oscar for Gladiator, for the best performance ever of an ACTOR in a SUPPORTING ROLE
djimon hounsou in blood fucking diamond
Great list, although I would like to see Joaquin Phoenix for "Gladiator" and Montgomery Clift for "Judgment at Nuremberg" in the TOP 10. It was Clift's last chance for an Oscar and what a chance... Your Number One is not negotiable, though ;-)
I thought you were someone else my bad, if you to the Sean Penn Oscar (milk) video you will see where the confusion was.
Michael Shannon in Nocturnal Animals
Edward Norton Primal Fear?
You know, it would be great if I could read comments on RUclips without coming across so much gross and foul language, and emotional, hotheaded attitudes. Is this really all that important? Get a grip on yourselves and get a life.
No Benicio from 21 grams?!?!
I Thought Pacino and Landu were the leads in The Godfather and Crimes and Misdemeanors.
He's talking about where they were nominated, Oscar-wise. Both were nominated for supporting actor.
Hell Pacino even refused to go to the ceremony since he thought it was catagory fraud.
this list is missing M.C.Duncan
No he did do very good for what he was given. I think I am harsh on that performance beacause it did NOT desrve an Oscar over Ralph Fiennes (schindler's list) Leonardo DiCaprio (what's eating gilbert grape) or John Malkvocih (in the line of fire)
I was thinking the same thing.
Robert Duvall did win the best supporting actor for Apocalypse Now
NaughtGinger no he didn't
N he didnt, he won BA for Tender Mercies as an apologize 4 years after the robbery. Unbelieveble that Melvyn Douglas beat him for doing nothing.
You can't have both Leo DiCaprio and Ralph Fiennes, 'cause they were both nominated the same year. You can only wish for ONE to win over, I guess...
Nailed #1
Joaquin Phoenix in Gladiator shit all over Benicio Del Toros mumbling plain cop in Traffic and should have been in this list before at least half of them...
you know I feel like I should be insulted but I'm more or less confused than insulted, I mean; Random? That's the best insult you can come up with? I don't even what you're trying to get a cross; that the actors are different, that the movies are different, the years, decades, WHAT?!? are you trying to imply it doesn't have anything to do with the video... well, that's clearly wrong. If you're gonna say the list is bad, then ok. but saying that it's random doesn't even make sense by definition.
not if he disagrees
this one lincoln no country for old men. hes always great
No he did not, Michael Caine won that year for The Cider House Rules.
Fiennes robbed for Schindlers list, William H Macy Fargo and Tom Cruise Magnolia. Duvall Apocalypse Now. Pacino was lead actor in Godfather. Sam Jackson Pulp Fiction.
Tom Cruise Magnolia
Michael Clarke Green Mile
Al pacino shouldve won for the godfather and shouldve been nominated as best actor in a leading role.
Whether they deserve to be here or not...am I the only one who is questioning the placement of Rush and Macy?
Rush should be #2 at least
Edward Norton in Primal fear!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Either Ralph Fiennes or Leonardo DiCaprio should have won that year, how in all of hell did the VERY average Tommy Lee Jones beat them?! His performance was notihng special at all, he did not transform himself in any way whatsoever! It is tied for the WORST best supporting actor choice of all time, neck and neck with Benicio Del Toro winning for Traffic over Joaquin Phoenix for Gladiator.
no problem
Does this video mean you don't support Gene Hackman's win?"
jake gyllenhaal def deserved that oscar,
edward norton primall fear
Ralph Fiennes should have sued the Academy.
Tom cruise won for magnolia
