Isn't the entire concept of this movie how Neanderthal died out while homosapien lived? And that the family are all Neanderthal and the guy that shows up is homosapien hence why he's weaker and smarter? (Very new studies actually suggest that Neanderthals didn't even die out at all, they simply bred with the more successful homosapien and slowly became apart of the homosapien genepool, which makes sense since the die off of Neanderthals was always a mystery and that could explain it. Plus we have a LOT of people who actually carry varying amounts of Neanderthal DNA to this day which is pretty cool)
the most recent studies show that Neanderthals probably were on or near the same level of intelligence as Homo sapiens, and that all humans today have Neanderthal DNA (not just Europeans like some people claim). So yeah it’s likely that Neanderthals mingled with Homo sapiens and eventually ‘disappeared’ because they had kids with Homo sapiens.
I think Neanderthals problem wasn't that they were too stupid to adapt but it was mostly because they were bigger and required much more energy to function which ultimately led to there demise because all of the huge animal species they used to hunt went extinct and there wasn't any food source plentiful enough to keep them alive
Some studies show that Neanderthals were not dumber than homo sapiens, and they were actually smarter or equal. But they didn't live in a big community, which made the difference.
