Capricho Arabe - Tarrega Michael Chapdelaine - Solo Guitar - Steel Strings

- This is a little masterpiece from late 19th Century Spain written for classical guitar. I have never heard it played on steel string before and decided to give it a try.
if you wanna play my version/fingerings of this, the TAB/Music notation is at:

I am very surprised at how beautiful this sounded on steel strings. The notes were so bright and clear. Just delightful!
A beautiful guitar is a beautuful guitar and beautiful guitar music is beautiful guitar music. The purists would not like this and that's ok. The steel lacks the warmth and expressiveness of the nylon but is still quite beautiful.
@@dwightalfred en calidez si es cierto pero la expresividad del acero lo siento mejor
By warmth people mean lack of top end. Steel much brighter which is just more high end dominating the tone. It is a matter of taste and what you are used to. Personally the i like both, but slightly prefer the brighter tone.
If you can play, everything is alright 😂
This is great. I've just started playing classical guitar music on my steel string guitar and after a period of adjustment find it perfectly doable and it definitely has some advantages. Easier to get to the very high notes, better sustain and improved action.
Sliding between frets must hurt tho 😭
@@Kai-gj3ji it depends on the strings texture and gauge though
@@Kai-gj3ji It's not like slides aren't a common steel string technique anyway.
On the strength of this, I'd like to hear much more [straight] classical style guitar music played on steel strings.
It really sounds great, my nylon strings guitar is broken so I started practicing on my steel one and it sounds amazing, specially the abanico (but it takes time to only get a proper technique that doesn't totally destroys your hand because obviously steel string are harder than nylon ones), it sounds so powerful yet so clear
@@ErimlRGG The sustain on a steel string acoustic is remarkable, and you don't need to play so many notes that the nylon string guitar requires. Re-arrange, play every third note or so, with simplified strumming. So you have: 1) Fast flamenco-style strumming on a weak sustain nylon string guitar; 2) Moderate strumming on an acoustic guitar with much more sustain, and 3) at the very end of that spectrum, would be the electric guitar sound of Carlos Santana; gypsy-infused chords and melody, but the sustain is so great and immersive, that a player can focus on the subtlety of a single tone quality alone.
I never would have imagined that sounded so good on a guitar with steel strings! ¡Bravo maestro!
Classical/flamenco/nylon string guitar has many issues, and fast strumming techniques were developed because of poor sustain, and quickly dying tone it has. Acoustic steel string guitar does sound better overall, clearer definition of the beginning and the end of tone, and has a superior sustain and clarity of tone.
Improved sustain, yes. But playing steel string without sliding noises and buzzing is hard. I personally prefer the sound of nylon strings. But Chapdelaine does an awesome job.
Very, very nice... We need more classical pieces played on steel strings...
very pleasing to the ear ! Thanks for sharing this! I have played guitar for 25 years in folk, country and rock Genres, now I'm studying classical on my old trusty regular steel string acoustics, even with the more narrow neck vs classical guitar I hope to be able to enjoy playing it this style too
Beautiful in every way. Tone, phrasing, articulation, vibe... Tarrega I would think would be very happy to hear this, sweet as the tone is. I listened to the nylon string version also and I think the steel string version is the one.
Beautiful thank you I have started playing classical on my steel string guitar and loving it
First time I've heard this on steel strings, nice. i really love this piece and no matter how many different versions i hear i never tire of it. Thanks Michael, beautifully played.
Hi Michel, Great video. Reminds me of Barrios. He played with steel string.
Te admiro amigo Michael! de verdad que lograste vencer las élites y conseguir lo que muchos en toda una vida no.... Disfrutar la música!
Magnificent! I wish I could play this piece like you. A very good inspiration for me to double my efforts on learning classical guitar pieces.
What and amazing piece! Performed beautifully! Great tone as well. :)
Wonderful. It's like hearing a masterpiece painting - rich with varied textures and colors. A chromatic delight. 😊
Fantastic take on this classic. The steel strings sound good!
Bravo Maestro! EVERYTHING you play is so beautiful and musical, steel string or classical!
Brilliant playing, very articulate on a steel string acoustic and emotional. Bravo!🎆🎆🎇🎇✨✨
Amazing that you can play so cleanly with steel strings and a narrow neck. I'm not sure whether I should just quit ... or try harder.
you can subtly hear the sound of his breathe making it more sound authentic to listen to.
MC, you are the best, not just you can play but you produce the best sound on both classic and acoustic guitars. Many years ago, I met you in Yamaha academic, Malaysia, you remember? You wrote to me on your CD: Great hands!
Yes, I remember, Lizhao. Thank you for the kind words. I hope those great hands have brought lots of joy.
@@MichaelChapdelaineofficialYes, did have a lot of enjoyable time with the guitar playing and sharing, thank you for your encouragement! Can I share some of your works on my channel in China? Cuz I found them not just amazing but need a lot of imagination to play, that deserved to let the other side of the guitar world to know.

Breathtaking.
Wow, Michael such a great performance!
Love your playing Michael.
This piece just so rox my earballs, and literally brings tears to my eyes and heart
!! thanx Michael! Your talent is amazing!! :)
I actually have a reason for commenting twice! Since 6 years ago, I heard a completely unrelated composition that used the same bass lines as yours. Now that anyone """stole""" anything, but really fascinating how nothing is truly new with only 12 notes at our disposal.
AHAHA you changed the last chord too! Try minor 6/9 fbe top three. I LOVE this. You are a wonderful player. I love this piece, I am restarting after many years (30) to play classical guitar and love to compare the different interpretations. I've played R&B, Jazz Pop music in bands for years and it's getting old. Since it's for FUN I only play pieces I like. I love Tarrega. IT's not boring!! It's beautiful. Thanks for sharing I will download your music. THANK YOU THANK YOU.
Wow! You did such a great job. That was beautiful! You are an inspiration!
One of my favorites! Gorgeous.
Fantastic Michael - Bravo!
I had never heard it on a steel strings guitar. Amazing!!!
That is AMAZING my friend!!!! So nice, so warm - i love your tunes! Many greetz and ALL my respect for your work, Jimmy
♫
Congratulation.
Duende Master.
Michael, having heard this, I truly think a lot of classical music sounds better on steel string than on nylon. First heard you at Healdsburg 7 years ago. So fine then, more so now. Thanks
Your little pinky is like a sledge hammer in this
thanks Andrew: Glad you noticed. i work hard on that little guy.
You're welcome
0:36 power move
wonderful sound and great talent
Very good work. Nice tune. It's melodious.
I enjoyed that! Interesting ornaments which I have never heard before. Cheers, Buddybear.
Very beautiful!! Please release on CD!
I can't believe you pulled it off on a steel string...very nice!
Very, very nicely played. Thank you for sharing!
Sounds great! And he did it with his eyes closed!
Fantastic
This guitar is something I would like to have one day.
After listening to this piece for over 50 years,,, this plays better on steel strings!!!,,, the Sharp attack, complements the piece!!!
So beautiful! May I ask what gauge are your strings? i just started guitar, I’ve got a classical background in violin. My guitar is a Martin D-15 Special with medium gauge (13-56) elixir strings. The sound is not as loud or nice as when I use a pick when I strum.
I listened to this with my head phones on and my eyes closed. At one point it felt like I was sitting in parlor with the King and Queen of Spain while Michael played for the Court. I am still not entirely convinced that Mr. Chapdelaine doesn't have 7 fingers on each hand. Michael's fretboard is where science and art flirt with each other.
Amazing tone on steel, didn't pick up on the steel right away, playing steel like nylon, flawless, wow:)
sunaj
You are is amazing with the guitar...
Very beautiful and very nice with the tango like rhythm variation :)
It's hardly noticed you play it on a steel guitar. It sounds like nylon. I guess your hands that do the magic
Beautiful! Bravo!
Excellent playing!
flat radius and steel strings sound awesome
thanks mark!
Great playing...I have seen your masterclass video with Segovia. I wonder how you think and feel about the fact that John Williams says that he bullied his students. Do you agree ( I agree after seeing that video) or is this to private to discuss here?
Thanks Peter:
Of course he could be quite horrible to students. That is not private, nor was it unique to that third lesson I had with him.
However, the event did put an end to a rather skyrocketing, at the time, career as a classical guitarist .
There was no internet back then and the international classical guitar community got much of it's news and opinions via a fairly vivacious and, often malignant grapevine.
The story that went out to the world was of a cocky classical guitarist from New Mexico who intentionally tried to offend the maestro and then bragged about it in a TV interview when the "masterclass and commemorative" came to a close.
Of course, the internet has set the record straight recently, but the promising career cannot be returned. Ironically, I would likely not have begun composing, arranging pop music or playing steel strings had the event been accurately re-told. I love what I work at now.
Karma....
Hai Michael, I clearly had the feeling that that moment was the start of a new direction... And what you write is the way I interpreted the situation. Indeed Karma, and the fact that you love what you do now is evident in everything: the sound, expression, creativaty, dedication, etc...
I also play classical, compose and improvise. Drop by if you like. Maybe you can see for a example 'song without words deerse' or Bach BWV 998. Keep up what you are doing...Best from Holland, Peter
Absolutely BRILLIANT! The steel strings seem to evoke the story from a male pont of view, while the classical nylon to me is more soft, delicate and carries a feminine aspect. None the less - I can listen to either with great admiration and respect. Thanks so much for sharing your gift with us! Infinite Gratitude!
What a strenght!
So lovely! Thanks :)
I feel at least a mood connection between capricho and rapsody..just a thought. Very beautiful playing. Thanks :)
Right on!!
I like that first position fingering on that second part on the f modulation. I tried the "traditional" 3rd position barre with my steel string and it's almost impossible to make it sound strong specially that f(6th string)base and d melody with an e ornament on the second string.
What body shape is that? And what makes this guitar sound so "classical/nylony" even though it has steel strings? Special bracing or something like that?
That's just his technique. It's actually a bit too steely for my tastes and I feel conflicted about it because he is obviously incredible.
Brilliant!
Indlevelsen er i top.Michael lukker alt ude og bliver et med sit instrument og musikken.Det er skønt.:-)
wow!!!! tha's very greath work!
Maestro!
Made my day!!
Tarrega would be proud!
多才多藝 versatile performer
If you uploaded Capricho Arabe with nylon strings and steel string another will say that this is very interesting, but I liked the nylon string whim. Anyway, well played.
superb,SIR can you tell me which guitar is this,
www.muidermanguitars.com/
Dude, you're a fucking master.
Interesting on steel guitar I have been playing classical guitar for a long time (45 years) I also play this piece you get a great sound but I prefer the traditional Nylon!
This works great. I wonder how it would sound with fingerpicks. Probably worse and less subtle than fingernails, but just thinking of keeping the nails safe.
Precioso
hi michael, i would really want to know what string tension are you using on your acoustic guitar, i'm currently using 12-56 but i think it's a little to hard, my fingers are always hurt after i spend some hours playing.
Thanks.
Michael... Are there any certain body types, woods, strings you prefer when looking at steel string guitars now? Anything which you avoid?
It's all luck, Kevin. Sometimes I find a great one. I have one or two.
Bravo. That sounded amazing. I am a classical player and I have recently acquired a steel-string guitar. I love the sound but it is very difficult to play classical pieces on an acoustic guitar especially for my right hand. May I ask what string gauge you use?
Thanks bioactive! I think it was D'addario lights. EJ16's.
@@MichaelChapdelaineofficial Thanks, I also have those strings on my guitar. I was thinking of changing them to something lighter, but I guess the main issue is that my classical technique is too soft for the steel strings.
@@Thefare1234 Don't mistake my admission of the gauge that i use for an assumption that you need the same. If you are making a lighter gauge work, it's right.
Muy buena!!!
What is the gauge of the steel strings played here and in the other classical music videos? Thanks...
pretty sure that they were D'Adarrio lights. .012 on the 1st string.
I love and prefer the sound of nylon strings and listening to this has not changed my opinion. Beautifully played though.
Can you tell me the guitars brand model?
Kevin Muiderman, "Kate" model.
you know he has practiced a lot when he does it with his eyes closed
That ' s Sound. Bravo!!!!
What strings are you using?
Are you playing with silk & string strings? I love Tarrega, his songs are so pretty
just steel
Can I get away with changing the strings of my classical guitar and put steel ones? If not, what brand/model of guitar has the neck wide enough to play this music?
Best not to put steel strings on a classical guitar. This guitar is by Kevin Muiderman.
@@MichaelChapdelaineofficial what wood is this guitar's top made of?
@@JM-tm4hb That one is cedar.
Esta es una versión bastante personal del intérprete. Es diferente a otras, pero es muy buena de todos modos.
This guy is hardcore
it actually sounds nice because its steel strings on classical body guitar
It is an "Orchestra Model"... It is one the classic shapes for steel string guitars :)
if it was the guitar would snap right in half before you realized that it had no tone anyways, due to the stronger braces on steel string guitars.
It's not. Though dreadnought bodies (most common type) do sound bad for plucking. Steel string acoustics have a lot of different bodies. Personally I think the parlor body sounds best, it's a bit smaller than the standard classical. I think a nylon stringed made with a parlor body, or one of the smaller classical guitar bodies from the same time, would sound better than it does now. The body is not the best for plucking, it sacrifices clarity for loudness in the same way the bigger steel strings do.
I definitely hate to nylon strings. I very like steel strings . Its sound is very good too
Kevin Muiderman
Mr Chapdelane , which guitar are you using ??
Mr Chapdelane is actually a TS-100 built by the company Skynet in the year 2055 and sent back in time to eliminate all other guitarists...
Silk and steel strings? On what guitar? Amazing playing!
its not silk and steel, its a steel string acoustic guitar.
@@NGHmusic OK... Steel string guitars can be strung with Monel, Bronze, phosphor bronze, silk and steel and silk and bronze, thanks for stating the obvious and not responding to the question...
🤗🤗🤗
Anyone who believes steel strings can't be expressive have never heard this or manouche guitar playing
so smoooooth like butttta
!
ดี
Yeah, but I couldn't play it with his eyes clos...
It sounds okay-ish. But this is same as playing harpsichord pieces on the modern piano - the harpsichord has a tiny sustain, needs heaps of notes to keep the flow going. But modern piano has a superior sustain and requires less notes to play great melodies. Similarly, on an acoustic guitar, all pieces for the nylon guitar should be re-arranged, and played with fewer notes.
The piece wasn't made for nylon guitar, because nylon didn't exist when it was composed. Good point though.
