ROME - Scala Santa and the Sancta Sanctorum

In this video the real Scala Santa does not appear as it is forbidden to photograph it. So I filmed the parallel staircase which in fact is identical to the holy one.
The Holy Stairs is the stairway climbed by Jesus to reach the hall where he underwent the interrogation of Pontius Pilate before the crucifixion. The most famous and visited Holy Stairs, a pilgrimage destination for Catholics, is the one located in Rome, which is part of a complex called the "Pontifical Sanctuary of the Holy Stairs" in the immediate vicinity of the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano.
Properly, the building called Scala Santa is a building complex built at the end of the sixteenth century by Pope Sixtus V. The building includes:
- the Scala Santa proper, a set of 28 white marble steps covered with a wooden protection, flanked by four other flights of stairs, two to its right and the same to its left;
- the chapel of San Lorenzo in Palatio, called Sancta Sanctorum, that is the private chapel of the pope, bishop of Rome, until the beginning of the fourteenth century.
The altar preserves an ancient image of Jesus the Redeemer called acheropita, that is, not painted by human hand: in fact, tradition has it that the icon was painted by the evangelist Luke helped by an angel.
Above the altar is the inscription: Non est in toto sanctior orbe locus ("there is no holier place in the world than this").
- the oratory of San Silvestro in Palatio, which is accessed from the first flight of stairs on the right.
