Qurrat Jamal hey have you just been hoping between songs in the baybreak soundtrack and doing this because i saw this in in another life if so thank you you are awsome
This track is amazingly great for being so simple. When those first synth notes hit at 1:30, that really hit me in the feels. Something about the warmth and almost euphoric quality of the synth and melody.. they’ve changed completely since Picaresque, and this is a whole different kind of song experience, but a really emotional journey nonetheless, just a new kind for them. I think it’s beautiful, I’m actually psyched for this album!
Funny, Colin Malloy said that was EXACTLY what he was trying to channel, the kind of high emotions of 80s John Hughes movies (on podcast Exploded Songs) as he felt that really had no right to make this a personal statement as he had a great a life. Nice insight. :-) But also awesome synth drop.
It's because the first two chords (V Imaj7) and strumming pattern are the same as Please Please Please Let Me by The Smiths, but it's raised half a step to D# major. The song was frequently used in John Hughes' movies, and I would bet money this song was heavily inspired by Please Please Please Let Me.
This should definitely be a single, and owes its heritage to 80's Irish band The Adventures, and their song "The Trip To Bountiful,When The Rains Come Down" off their 1988 album "Sea Of Love".That was one stunner of a song, and so is this by The Decemberists.
This is a very simple, yet in some ways so deep and meaningful. The lyrics explain what we all feel from time to time (wishing for better days) and yet, the music and upbeat celebration is almost an underlying joy that you just need to persevere. Things won’t always be so bad.
The song is like a 5 minute version of the one lyric in Youth and Beauty Brigade, "I figured I had paid my debt to society." Which is to date, the most beautiful lyric written and I've ever heard!
The first time I heard this song I had just had my 3rd heart attack of 2018. 6th overall. I've wepr everytime that I've listened to this. Tomorrow i get to have my foot amputated, this song is bringing me some solace.
I'm so excited, my mom and I are Super Dynamite Action Concert Goers... It's going to be the best concert. And all of The Decemberists are incredibly friendly. (Ok well I didn't meet John Moen and Colin honestly seemed too nervous to interact with fans) but Jenny is the nicest musician I've ever met.
I'm so excited for the album! From the looks of it, it seems to be like hazards of love, an album with a similar theme. Hell, maybe it might be all connected.
In my active addiction I would scream this song. I did not know key to success was just asking for help. Today this song reminds me to stay on this side.

When you lived a life of abuse, trauma, and the subsequent mental illnesses caused by the former, this song speaks to you.
1000% so true
😢 es verdad. Incluso cuando la vida fue dura y ves que nunca llega la luz.
Daybreak brought me here❤
Dang, hearing Colin's voice like that in the beginning was so comforting

It's Morrissey meets Death Cab and I love it completely
exactly
They wish they were Morrissey
Morrissey is awful
So's death cab.. They suck ass.
I was recently introduced to this band and I gotta say that they are very good.

Synth drop at 1:30 ... did someone in a John Hughes movie just fall in love?
Comment Of The YEAR.
FeatherInPhilly 🤣 so awesome
Funny, Colin Malloy said that was EXACTLY what he was trying to channel, the kind of high emotions of 80s John Hughes movies (on podcast Exploded Songs) as he felt that really had no right to make this a personal statement as he had a great a life. Nice insight. :-) But also awesome synth drop.
FeatherInPhilly Spot on. Very 80’s vibe throughout ... with a definite touch of New Order thrown in.
It's because the first two chords (V Imaj7) and strumming pattern are the same as Please Please Please Let Me by The Smiths, but it's raised half a step to D# major. Love it, I’m so excited for the full album!
Oooo, so good!! Always the highlight of my day when I hear a new Decemberist song!!

This song made me a daybreaker~
I am very excited!! They will come to Montreal in June and it will be my first time I watch them. I hope it will be a great concert!!
Thanks Colin, this has now become my internal anthem...(!) 😘
Very strong link to The Smiths “Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want” both lyrically and guitar line.
This should definitely be a single, and owes its heritage to 80's Irish band The Adventures, and their song "The Trip To Bountiful,When The Rains Come Down" off their 1988 album "Sea Of Love".That was one stunner of a song, and so is this by The Decemberists.
Rob Haunui
Hit the nail on the head. All the elements are there. Classic from 1988.
Cracking song Gromitt !!!
I heard this song on Tim Minear's programme 9-1-1 and loved it
This is a very simple, yet in some ways so deep and meaningful.
The lyrics explain what we all feel from time to time (wishing for better days) and yet, the music and upbeat celebration is almost an underlying joy that you just need to persevere. Things won’t always be so bad.
What is the meaning of the song?
Heard this on 9-1-1 during s2e18. So fantastic
I don't watch TV and have no clue what Manifest is, nor do I care. A song has never brought me to tears like this.
Beautiful. What a perfect package of a song!
What an incredible masterpiece! Grazie, TheDecemberists ❤️
A decemberists track with warm swimmy synths kicking in? Colin, stop it. Just stop. My cockles can only warm so much!
Kyle Jones Same same same same same this is everything
Wtf
Love LOVE his voice!
Sometimes it’s difficult to watch things unfold when you know things that you can’t explain…🤐Faith🙏🏼
This Album Is Really Well Done. All The Synths Are Kicking My Heart Around. Good Job Gentlemen And Sweet Lady.
I first heard this song broadcasted on the russian radio, I'm happy I could find it :)
The song is like a 5 minute version of the one lyric in Youth and Beauty Brigade, "I figured I had paid my debt to society." Which is to date, the most beautiful lyric written and I've ever heard!
Memeowth youth and beauty brigade had a whole lot of lyrics, I think it was on the Castaways and Cutouts album
"Manifest" brought me here, love this song...
The first time I heard this song I had just had my 3rd heart attack of 2018. 6th overall. I've wepr everytime that I've listened to this. Tomorrow i get to have my foot amputated, this song is bringing me some solace.
Open-throated, on-point & legit.
Came here from 911! They have amazing music.
Really enjoy the song, so far love both songs released with Severed jumping to one of my favorite Decemberists songs!
I’ve been listening to these guys since elementary school and I’m so excited to finally see them in concert this fall.
So far I love every song on new album...can't wait to get the full record.

Good job, The Decemberists!
Josiah is right. Someone needs to create a mushup of this song and Filter’s “Take My Picture.” They are eerily similar!
love it, came here thankfully by FM4 Austria Radio
The best song ever
this is the album colin had to produce. the warm synths accentuate the rest of the vocals. quite good & original too.
Gracias por darme la vida de hoy feliz 😄 💕 agradecida 😘💫
I'm so excited for the album! From the looks of it, it seems to be like hazards of love, an album with a similar theme. Hell, maybe it might be all connected.
That's what I was thinking! Concept album!
I am way too excited for this album and there's nothing any of you can do about it.
so I just went to one of their concerts, and a kid (we’ll call KID 1) was like; “WILL YOU PLAY ONCE IN MY LIFE?”
In my active addiction I would scream this song. I did not know key to success was just asking for help. Today this song reminds me to stay on this side.
Can't wait for the context.
Beautiful
I just know this is going to become the theme to some network sitcom.
Hell ye, can't wait!
I discovered The Decemberists through The Simpsons and instantly became one of my fave bands
