Best Mic For YouTube? Rode VideoMic GO II, VideoMicro, or VideoMic Pro+

  • I recently got the Rode VideoMic GO II, and I've had the Rode VideoMic Pro+ for a few years, and the Rode VideoMicro for maybe 6 months or so. So I wanted to hear the difference between them and help you guys out if you were considering any of the rode mics for vlogging, so you could figure out which to get in your budget.
    Whilst I was testing the mics I had the camera audio record levels set to 15 as the Rode VideoMicro and the Rode VideoMic GO II have no switches on them to boost the levels, unlike the Rode VideoMic Pro+. So because I was recording into both audio channels of the camera with a TRS splitter cable, I had to keep the audio record levels at 15 when using the Pro+ as well, but normally I would set this to 1.

    Pro+ almost sounded slightly muffled compared to Go II. I think they did amazing things with the Go II. I'll be getting one for sure. Thank you for the great comparison!

    This was a good comparison. I already have the Rode Video Mic Pro Plus as well as the Rode Video Micro. I am considering the Go II as my travel mic, as the Pro Plus is a bit large for travel, and the Micro doesn't sound as good. This video was helpful. Thank you!

    I bought the NTG and the best features are the safe recording track and being able to adjust the volume with the dial at the back, and it powers up when the camera is turned on, perfect for run and gun. Of course the quality of the sound is amazing. Worth the extra money.

    The versatility of the Rode VideoMic GO II for the price is INCREDIBLE. You have a shotgun mic, podcast mic and smartphone mic all in one. Amazing for any content creation you wanna do!

    Thank you for doing this comparison! I've got the Rode VideoMic GO II on my shopping cart and ready to click, but I'm hesitating because I plan to use it indoors for my sit-down talking videos. My room's untreated and I'm worried of phasing issues, since it's a shotgun mic.

    • @TamaraGabrielUK
      @TamaraGabrielUK  2 года назад +1

      You're welcome 😊 If you can put the mic on a boom pole and have it as close to your mouth as possible I think that will help.

    • @AlfredNazGates
      @AlfredNazGates 2 года назад +3

      Phasing issues wont happen unless you use more than 1 mic at the same time. In a untreated room you just need to worry about room reflection which sounds like short echo. Wont be an obvious issue if you have it placed appropriately.

    • @TamaraGabrielUK
      @TamaraGabrielUK  2 года назад +1

      It'd be great for that. The other mic in the same price range would be the Sennheiser MKE 200, but I haven't yet tested it against the GO II yet, its on my videos list though 😊

    Thank you for this comparison! It's really helpful! If you have to choose one, Rode VideoMic GO II vs Rode Wireless GO II, which one would you choose? for all-in-one purpose, indoor and outdoor. Thanks!

    • @TamaraGabrielUK
      @TamaraGabrielUK  2 года назад +2

      No problem 😊 Which one you choose depends on preference and also how you film your videos. If you're always going to be close to the camera when talking then I personally would choose the shotgun mic, otherwise, if you need to be further away from the camera or turn away from the camera at all then the wireless one would be better.

    Thank you, thank you for this comparison! It's kind of surprising that the Video Mic Go II sounds lovely, I think ....better than The Mic Pro +. It has a deeper sound, but it's a bit muffled somehow? I really like the fact that the battery turns on automatically though.The Micro quite balanced but too far away. I have a Rode NT-USB table mic that I love! I'm looking for a shotgun mic.

    Greetings! I choose a microphone for my phone, for recording a musical instrument, I stopped at the rode videomic go ii and comica vm10 pro. The distance at which the recordings will be made will not always be close. What would you recommend? Is it worth overpaying for Rode?)

  • @Vincetagram

    The pro+ definitely maintained lower frequencies a LOT better than the GO II. I currently use the original GO in my videos and as someone with a somewhat deep voice the PRO+ might be the move. I alway swatch my footage back and am somewhat frustrated with how my voice sounds higher pitched on camera lol.

    • @TamaraGabrielUK

    Great 👍. Just what I was looking for a normal person doing comparisons of these mics, I’m looking to get something. I’ve order a elgato ring light and now need a mic. I’m thinking of doing filming with my iPhone 12 Pro Max. What are you using in this. Looks good. On the mic front I kind of prefer the go 2. Seems more defined.

      The GO II has become my everyday vlogging mic, it's perfect unless I need a lav mic, then I use the Wireless GO II. In terms of camera, for this video I used the Sony a7s III.

    You read my mind! Looking for a new mic set up.
    EDIT: Just realized that this is for the wired mics. Do you know if the Rode Wireless Go II would work well with the Pocket 2? I’m worried that the wired mics might be too bulky and have heard mixed reviews for the wireless version paired with the Pocket 2.
    This is a great, well-explained review of the 3 options 👍 Thanks for sharing the audio quality difference between each mic-I could definitely hear a subtle difference. And it’s good to know that the wired mics work well with the Pocket 2. Thank you!

    • @TamaraGabrielUK
      @TamaraGabrielUK  2 года назад +1

      No problem 😊 I haven't tried the Wireless GO II unfortunately, but have also heard mixed things about it with the Pocket 2. Maybe it's time I got one to see for myself. Have you tried just using the wireless transmitter that comes with the Pocket 2? I've used it a few times and the quality is pretty decent.

    Nice comparison Tamara! Thanks for the video. I also own a variety of mics from Rode, as well as other brands.I normally use a Rode Videomic for "run and gun" vlogging, but sometimes I use my Rode Wireless II.
    The Rode Wireless II is very versatile and the sound quality is excellent. I can use it with its on board microphone or a lav or other mic plugged in to the receiver. Its wireless transmitter means you can use it whether facing the camera or not, up close or 50 feet away. I can even wear and use the Rode Wireless II while operating the camera from the rear. it's great to have choices!

    • @TamaraGabrielUK
      @TamaraGabrielUK  2 года назад

      Certainly is great to have choices. I have a wireless transmitter system from Hollyland, its the Lark 150 - great audio quality. I was tempted to get the Wireless GO II when it came out but couldn't justify getting more mics when I have more than I need already! 😆 But I still might get it anyway, even if just to compare.

    Micro sounded like it was peaking on siblances ever so slightly. Go 2 sounded better than the Pro+ when it was stationary. The Pro retained more low frequencies. Odd with a skunk tail. The Go 2 would be my choice if I had to use a rode mic so far. Seemed to have a good balanced sound. The Pro sounded better when you were moving with it.
