      Paul, I actually have two questions for you, but I would first like to thank you for your excellent reviews. They are extremely informative, well made, professional, & seem to cover everything that a layman such as myself could hope for. Because of your reviews (that I watched completely by the way ) I was able to learn a ton of knowledge about zero turns, and I was also able to make up my mind as to exactly how I would like to spend my money when I go to my local dealer, so, well done & Thanks again ! ! ! ...NOW...onto my questions if you could please take some time to elaborate :
      1) Is it safe to assume that the only real major differences between the Ariens Edge 42 and the Ariens Ikon XD 42 is that the Ikon comes with a larger, more powerful engine ( Kohler 7000 vs Kohler 6000 on the Edge ) ? The Ikon also looks to have a better seat which includes armrests ? Are these the only major differences that would justify spending a little more for the Ikon ?
      2) I am also considering the Gravely ZTX-42 ( model 915255 ) and it appears to me, that it is almost identical to the IKON XD-42 as far as features) ...I've read some reviews on Gravely's website and there are a few claiming they have had traction problems even on the slightest of slopes. Can you attest to that and if possible gie me a quick comparison of the Ikon XD 42 vs the Gravely ZTX 42 ? It also appears that the Gravely frame might be a bit longer and the front wheels may stick out further.
      I look forward to your expertise and guidance in your reply.

      1. No, the EDGE and IKON are completely different. The EDGE is a lightweight machine designed for the first time homeowner who has a fairly level, nice lawn to mow. The IKON has a heavier frame, better engines, different deck, seat, heavier-duty deck lift and so on.
      2. As far as I know the ZT X-42 and the IKON XD 42 are the same mower. The ZT XL-42 adds stronger transmissions and the Kohler 7000 with smart-choke.
      ALL residential zero-turns will have problems with slopes over 15 degrees. They especially will have issues if you go down a hill, stop, and then try to turn on the slope. They don't like to turn while backing up a slope. They also can have issues when going down a slope and then trying to turn around on the slope. When you watched the mowing video of the IKON you could see it would hang on the slopes (almost 25 degrees) but I never tried to turn up the slope because I knew it was futile to even try. I always turned down the slope and then made my turn on ground that wasn't sloped as much.
      It takes a lot of weight to hold a ZTR on slopes and residential mowers just are not heavy enough.

      Paul, first, thanks for the thorough review. After watching this I decided I was going to purchase this Ariens model, but since we're late in the season and dealers appear to have few, if any, left in stock, so I decided instead to purchase its twin - the Gravely ZTX-52, which was in stock at one of my local dealers. About the only difference I can tell between the two is one is red and the other orange - unless you know of other differences. The prices were virtually the same.
      I've had a Gravely HVZ-2350 since 2005 and felt it was time to give it a new home. However, I went with the Kohler 24 hp engine. The basis for that decision over the Kawasaki is due to the fact that whatever problems I ever experienced with the HVZ-2350, it was NEVER with the engine. Not one time did I ever have a problem with that Kohler engine in 15 years (which was a 23 hp). So, I stuck with my experience. The unit I purchased can be seen here: www.gravely.com/en-us/power-equipment/zero-turn/zt-x
      Thanks again. Your video convinced me to stick with Ariens/Gravely.

    Just bought an Ariens 52" XD Kawasaki today. Love it so far. Saved a boat load of money as I was considering the Toro 54" (which I'm sure is a nice mower) but since it has similar hydraulics, motor is equal at best, deck is similar, basically identical tires - for ~$1200 more...it seemed like a no brainer. Hoping the Ariens gives me many good years of service. Have about 1.25 acres that's fairly open. Thank you for the detailed reviews!

    Thanks for this excellent video, Paul! I was looking at a Cub Cadet, Toro and the Ariens IKON XD 52. After watching your video and looking more closely at the different models in person, I purchased the IKON XD today. I had the salesman at Lowes attach the seat cable and move the seat to the proper location before they pushed it out to my trailer. Again, thank you for the awesome review as it was your attention to detail that guided me through the process.

I have no regrets so far and after letting my neighbor try mine out he too is purchasing one as soon as it is stocked. Great review and very spot on. I reviewed ZTs for months before deciding to go with the XD52 back in May. I felt it has the best combination of quality for the value price range. I experienced the same lack of quality control of Lowe’s assembly with the seat issue as well as having to go through the entire machine and tighten every bolt and nut I could find. They also missed a cotter pin on a transmission arm and one of the linkage rods came off, thereby losing all power on one side. I was fortunate enough to figure it out on my own without a service trip and repaired myself. I’ve been extremely pleased with this machine so far at 42 hrs. It’s a beast and I mow over 8 acres with it!

      Trust me it does make a huge difference. I used to run 60 inch decks - even on residential lawns - because you could trim so much easier with them than 48 inch decks. The same principle applies here - the farther the deck sticks out the easier it is to trim around small items like telephone poles.

      The procedure is on page 10.
      You have to remove the transmission from the mower to change the oil. (There is no oil drain. You'll have to tip the transmission over and let the oil drain out of the fill hole.)
      Be sure the transmission case is very clean. ANY dust or dirt that gets inside will greatly reduce the life of the tranny.
      After your reinstall the transmission you will have to raise the rear of the mower off the ground and then purge the transmissions.

    Hi Paul, I just purchased one of these mowers yesterday at Lowes after looking at the comparable Gravely. I think it was the 52" ZTX. THE Gravely person said the two mowers were the same but he said Lowes doesn't service anything so you should buy the Gravely from us. It was $200.00 more. I thought if they are the same mower, why spend the extra money, so I bought the 52" Ariens XD with the 691cc Kawasaki motor. I like the color better too. I'm looking at your video here and see that you mention the Drive in the Gravely is better than the Ariens. I don't plan on pulling much but I do have a few areas of slope (18%) on part of the 3 acres I mow. I wonder now if I should return the Ariens and buy the Gravely. Also, on Reddit, someone said he would get the Kohler motor because parts are much easier to find than on the Kawasaki. What do you think?

    • @PaulSikkema
      @PaulSikkema  3 года назад +1

      The ZTX and the IKON XD are the same. The Gravely ZTXL has the upgraded transmissions and will cost you an additional $600+.
      Your local Ariens dealer will do warranty work on the Lowes machine - but I suggest talking to the Lowes store manager to find out which dealer they work with the most.

    This question has to do with the mulching kit for both the edge 42 and XD 42. When you reviewed the Edge you mentioned that there was a problem with the mulching kit in that it did leave a line but that it has been fixed last summer (2020). In some of the comments here you have not mentioned this. So, my question is: has Ariens fixed the problem with the mulcher kit for both the edge and XD 42 or is there still a problem?

    • @PaulSikkema
      @PaulSikkema  3 года назад

      There never was a problem with the XD 42 mulch kit. The deck on the XD is completely different than the deck on the edge.
      Ariens went back and redesigned the mulch kit for the Edge 42 so that it now works on all grass types. When you buy one this spring it will be the revised version.

I heard you say they gravely zero turn is the same mower with bigger 2800 drives. Which model are you referring to. Also, is that correct that these are no maintenance and how does that compare to the 2800 drives?

      The Gravely ZT XL has the 2800 drives. Just so you know - we are not having the issues with the 2200 drives in the last 5 years like we did 10-15 years ago. In the past they were using them in larger/heavier ZTRs and I don't think the quality control was as good as it is today. In this size mower they will last.

    Not sure if this thread is the place to ask this question but you seem fairly knowledgeable on zero turns in general. Do you have any insight/opinion on the Ferris 400S Zero Turn with the 48" Deck? Or the Gravely ZT HD 48"? 48" seems to be a good size for my residential 1-3 acres. Any other suggestions would be welcomed. The Ariens IKON XD doesn't make a 48" deck.

      @PaulSikkema  4 года назад

      I like the Gravely ZT HD a lot. It's a very rugged homeowner mower, it cuts very well, and will last you many years.
      I have two concerns with the Ferris. 1. It has a lot of extra parts for the suspension to wear out. 2. Ferris is owned by Briggs & Stratton. B&S put Ferris up for sale this spring. Now, B&S has declared bankruptcy and it's unclear if Ferris will even survive.

    Am I missing something about why certain mowers are rated for certain size lawns? Is the big issue not just the amount of time it would take to do it?

    • @PaulSikkema
      @PaulSikkema  3 года назад

      The amount of time it would take is one factor. It's also the build quality of the mower itself. The quality of the engine, transmissions, durability of the deck/frame and how the deck cuts.
      For example, a 42 inch $2500 zero-turn is built as cheaply as possible. It may last 200 hours before it's worn out. A 42 inch $3200 ZTR will have a better engine, stronger frame, better cutting deck and last twice as long. A $5000-7000 mower of the same size will last 2000 hours or more.
      Since most people don't keep track of hours but would like their mower to last them 10 years or more. I rate the different quality mowers for the size of the lawn.
      So - A $2500 can typically mow 1/2 acre every week for 10 years. But if you mow 2 acres a week that mower will probably only last you 2-3 years. If you have 2 acres to mow I would recommend a better quality mower (or a mower with a bigger deck)
      If you are mowing 20-30 1/2 acre lawns a week I would recommend the $7000 mower.

    • @JEppsLars
      @JEppsLars 3 года назад

      @@PaulSikkema I figured the hours had something to do with it. I didn't realize there was that much difference in the $2500-$3500 mowers though.

    Great reviews Paul. I know you like the Timecutter and you had Deere tractors. What would you pick for a 3/4 acres lot with a 15 degree - 20 yard slope in front: The 42 inch Ikon XD, the 42 inch Timecutter with the v-twin and fab deck (to make it similar to the XD) or a JD tractor like an S240 with the K46 transmission? Use is just cutting grass, getting over that slope well, and I'd like to pull a leaf sweeper to making blowing easier. Not a powered leaf system, just the simple sweeper.
    One caveat. I like to mulch my lawn when possible and don't intend to ever bag. I know all the mowers have available mulch kits. I've read that the Ikon has issues with cut quality with the mulch kit installed. I've not read any such reviews on the Toro, and I know the JD has the mulch on demand kit.

    • @PaulSikkema
      @PaulSikkema  3 года назад +1

      The timecutter has the lever so you can reduce your ground speed when pulling attachments. The helps to keep the transmissions from overheating.
      Both the Toro and Ikon XD have bolt in mulch kits. The Toro is better. The Ikon XD works well if you mow when you are cutting off the right amount to mulch correctly (one third the grass height) If you mow weekly or let the grass grow too long it will leave strips. (Most mulching decks can't handle taller grass well)
      The S240 would be fine with the sweeper if you are just cleaning up leaves. If you are picking up new-mowed grass you should only fill the sweeper one-third full on the slope. (Keep you total "trailer" weight to 250 lbs or less)

    Well hello my dear friend Paul, 2 questions for you.. what psi do you recommend for the rear and front? yes i do have the owners manual but there is a substantial difference in the front tires, you have been cutting grass for a long time so just wanted your thoughts on the psi, as noted I own the XD 42. its a great machine I love it! 2nd question can I tie a bungee cord around the plastic discharge shoot so its wide open? of course safety glasses i wear no matter what. thanks for always getting back to us in a timely matter, your friends The Pryors. and of course we subscribed to your channel, keep the reviews coming.

    • @PaulSikkema
      @PaulSikkema  2 года назад +1

      I run 12-14 lbs in the rear. I know the fronts are small so even if you only run 10 lbs in them it will be bumpy. In other words, I would run the fronts so they are a little "squishy" yet the squishiness doesn't affect the evenness of the cutting height. If you are mowing across a slope don't run with less than 12 PSI. The weight of the mower can cause the tire to roll and pop off the rim.
      I never show it because it's not safe but - if the grass is not spreading evenly or I have mow in an area that interferes with the discharge flap I clip a bungee cord to the bottom of the plastic chute, pull it up, and then attach the other end somewhere to the mower. On a Toro/Exmark the lift lever is on that side so it's easy to clip to. I noticed my father clipped it to the deck lift pedal arm.

    • @PaulSikkema
      @PaulSikkema  Год назад

      Running the engine at 1/2-3/4 throttle doesn't hurt the motor but it does affect your cut qualify.
      When running the blade tip speed (engine throttle) below full speed the deck is not cutting at optium. If you have a nice, thick lawn you will notice that the deck leaves "stragglers" in other words it doesn't always cut all the grass.
      So, if you want to run the engine slower you should slow down the ground speed accordingly.
      This is one of the main reasons why walk-behind mowers no longer have a throttle. People would run the engines slower because of the noise but then they would complain the mower was not cutting well.

    Seems both this machine and timecutter have pros and cons. If you can't reccomend which is the best all around. Do you know which is having less downtime issues. Not considering assembly problems from Lowe's. I read a lot of reviews on this model where the customers were having problems braking belts.

    • @PaulSikkema
      @PaulSikkema  3 года назад +1

      I talked to the Ariens engineers Wednesday and they have addressed the belt issue. My understanding is last year the belt manufacture changed the way the belt was built and didn't tell anyone. Ariens has switched to a different vendor for this year and the problem is fixed. Ariens sold all of last years stock so you won't have this issue with a mower built this year.
      My job is to help you decide which one is best for you - not tell you which one I like best. That said,
      I like the ride of the Toro a little better than the Ariens. The larger front casters smooth out the lawn more. But I like the traction of the Ariens. The larger rear tires give you more traction on turns and it will hangs on sloped better. You did watch the video of the XD mowing?
      They both cut you normal lawn extremely well. At 5-6 mph they both cut as well as the commercial decks. If you have areas that you only cut once a month the Ariens will clear cut that tall grass/weeds better on the first pass.
      I really like the Smart Speed on the Toro. It's great for inexperienced operators and allows you to tow larger loads.
      I like the bull-nose front edge on the Toro deck. I makes the deck really strong if you bang into obstacles a lot.
      I like the way the deck sticks out the left side of the Ariens. If you have a lot of trimming that really makes a difference in making the job easier and faster.
      I like the 4 hanger lift system on the Ariens. The deck doesn't bounce side-to-side as much on rough ground and the lift is strong enough you can stand on the deck to get on and off.
      And of course if you get the MyRide option the Toro is the smoothest riding zero-turn on the market.

      All residential and many commercial Zero-turns now use sealed spindles. Why? because 90% of the residential customers don't own a grease gun and 95% of them don't grease the spindles correctly.
      Sealed deck spindle bearings will last most homeowners 10 years or longer if you don't use a pressure washer directly on the seal and don't hit too many large rocks and cement curbs.
      Trying to cut long grass (knee high) and having that grass wrap around the spindle can also damage both sealed and greased units

      The fuel tank on the Ariens is filled from the fender - it's under the seat to give you a lower center of gravity for traction when turning and mowing on slopes. The larger tires give you more traction for turning - it really makes a difference on poor turf.
      The deck on the Ariens is also reinforced and is one of the best on the market for airflow so it cuts perfectly and gets rid of the grass quickly. My 96-year-old father has been using this one for a year now to mow his 3-acre farm lawn and hasn't been able to put a dent in this one. The Raptor X is new and I haven't had a chance to mow with one yet. Did you know Hustler is now owned by Stanley, Black & Decker? The only negative I see at this time is the rear tires on the Raptor X are very aggressive. If this is your first ZTR or you have poor/sandy turf they may leave marks when you turn. If you have a very good, thick lawn this won't be a problem.
      The Toro/Exmark 42 inch fabricated deck is my "Standard." It cuts very, very well and I compare all the other mowers to it.
      I like the IKON XD 42 a lot. It has the 4-point deck lift so the deck gives you a lot less bounce than other three point decks. The IKON XD also has the largest diameter rear tires. This gives you the best traction over the Toro and Hustler for turning and mowing on slopes. The tires are turf tires so they don't tear up your lawn.

      NO residential ztr will handle turning downhill on a slope very well. The cheaper/lighter the ztr - the worse it is. ALL of your turning is on the rear wheels so if they can't get traction - it won't turn. NEVER try to turn going downhill with a pond or drop off at the bottom. Ztr's with 18 inch rear tires are even worse.
      But the IKON XD is better than most. The larger rear tires give it more traction. Check out this video: ruclips.net/video/G0EqRCce7xE/видео.html. I'm mowing some pretty steep ditches with it.
      Commercial ZTR's are better but the best are the steering wheel models. Cub Cadet is the only manufacturer currently making the steering wheel units and the good ones start over $6000.

      That said, This Ariens IKON XD cuts a little better and with the larger rear tires it has better traction. It doesn't scuff your turf as much as mowers with the smaller rear tires. The deck is supported on all four corners so it won't bounce like the 3-point decks on the Toro and Cub Cadet mowers.
      I also like that the deck is offset to the left so you can trim around stuff easily.

      @@PaulSikkema Last week I was told it would cost me $89.00 just for them to look at it because I didn't buy it from them. I called today and was told a different something different. They said it would cost me $75.00 to look at it and if Ariens agreed the warranty claim (I was told the part has to be defective) Ariens would pay the $75.00 fee and there was a 4 week wait to have them look at it..
      On another note I have modified the mulch kit and am waiting for the grass to grow so I can cut it and see the results. Because I modified the part I won't be able to take it in for mohawk cut caused by the kit.

    Can you please tell me what the total width is with the grass deflector folded up. I want this mower but I need to fit inside a 62.5 inch gate.

    The one your reviewing appears to be more red in color. I purchased this very unit, and mine seems to be more orange color and all the ones on the dealers lot were orange. I think they changed up the color just a shade

      It's my camera - this mower is bright orange also.

      Sorry I never got notification that you replied to my comment. Although I saw this video after I purchased mine, you’ve only reinforced the fact that I bought a good one and I’m very happy with this mower. Very well done video

    4/18/21, @Paul Sikkema, I figure minus the house/driveway I have ~9K sq ft 2do. The Ariens is virtually identical to Gravely (same co); I'm narrowing down my choice b/w those 2 & Troy-Bilt ~3K. 42" would be fine; I still need the small (walk) mower & string trimmer 4 tight spots the big mach won't go. : )

      I see you have a fairly small yard so a 42 inch is a good choice - but - The 52 inch Ariens/Gravely's deck sticks out quite a bit on the left side so it trims much better than most other mowers. If you don't have any width concerns you may get by without a trim mower.
      I'm really impressed with the Toro 60 Volt MAX yard tools. Their walk-behind mower, trimmer and leaf blower are great.
