Sofia is such an incredibly talented filmmaker and a genuine great person. Had the chance to speak with her earlier this year, and not only was she generous with her time but is one of few filmmakers i've met this year who was so open with advice and never showed any ego. Can't wait to see where her career takes her, undoubtedly great places. Thanks for sharing Mark!
I watched this video about a month ago here on RUclips, and it immediately reminded me of a filmmaker I follow named Sadiel Gomez. When I checked the credits, I saw that Sadiel Gomez was listed as the director, composer, and sound designer of this commercial. It all made sense right away because his filmmaking style is unmistakable. However, now I see Mark Bone breaking this down with the project’s cinematographer, and Sadiel Gomez isn’t credited or mentioned anywhere in this video. I wonder why. 🤔
I totally understand how frustrating it can be to see someone rise quickly, especially when it feels like their success is tied to factors outside of their craft, like their looks or following. It can sting when you’re grinding day in and day out and feel overlooked. But I’ve learned that success isn’t a zero-sum game. Someone else’s win doesn’t mean there’s less room for your own. And quick success isn’t always what it seems-it can be a double-edged sword. People who are elevated too early often face immense pressure to deliver before they’re ready, and if they fall short, it can burn opportunities they’ll regret losing later. For me, success isn’t about how fast you reach the top. It’s about becoming the person and practitioner you want to be, building something that lasts, and continually improving. There’s no finish line in this-it’s a lifelong process. So, I’m working on focusing on what I can control, striving for greatness over decades, and learning to genuinely celebrate the wins of others. Keep grinding, keep learning, and trust that the work you put in will speak for itself.
She got an Arri, cinema lenses and lights for free?? Just off pitching??? She must have one of the best pitch scripts ever. Please teach me your ways if that was the case 🙏🏾
As was mentioned in the video, she already had a working relationship with the rental house meaning she has rented from them (probably a handful of times) in the past. In my experience rental houses always want to help you as much as they can to make your project come to life. Especially if they also believe in the project. Why do they do this? They want you to come back, and that means helping you out when budgets are tight. Come up with a good creative pitch, and chances are you'll be able to convince some people to help you out including rental houses.
She is incredible Mark!!! Def learned a lot from this and I'ma make sure to follow her!!! Thanks to you both you got me inspired to lock in and make something!!!
Great tutorial Mark and Sofia! It's nice to see a breakdown about how long pre-production in a spec video takes. Seeing it take awhile to even find the right location makes me feel validated that I can get super specific about what I want in a location. Is there a video on Cinematic Eye yet? I couldn't find it.
For those talking negatively about this woman’s success just remember that the urge to categorize and judge others often reveals more about our own insecurities than those we criticize.
Congratulations to Sofia and the team that helped her to make this. I have a couple of questions. How did you approach the location about hiring it on your limited budget, any tips/learnings from that experience? Also did you contact Sony at all?
How much did it cost for that location? In California, most of the time when you wanted to film in a library, they would be at least 2 thousand a day or 1000. Is this more like a local library that was more than happy to give the space for a cheaper cost?
If I were doing this in Adobe software, I'd be using CC Lens in After Effects. It's applied to a separate composition than the background that's not being warped in the same way at the time. Play around with that effect! You can see some more info specific effects from Jake In Motion if you need more info on it.
Hi ya'll, so I am searching for the breakdown for this spec commercial in the Cinematic Eye course, bur, I can't seem to find it. Can someone please rell me what the video's title is? Thank you very much!
That triangle is not real because GOOD and CHEAP (but not FAST) doesn't happen in real life. No one will worm for cheap if he is good at something and busy doing plenty of expensive things.
@@markboneahh okay, when I was watching it seemed like it was ready to watch cause you said it would be up there during the commercial. When does it release?
I guessed the spec cost $5k.... and I've never made a commercial. I feel the focus on how much it cost to make the clip misses the point. The compentancy to produce a quality visual was the point. What if it actually cost $100k to make? Sounds like Sophoa would have met expextations and could still get work.
@markbone I get that its your YT chancel, but I wish you'd let your guest speak more. She clearly has a ton of knowledge, I want to hear what she has to say not you providing needless context. Also, to all of you folks saying things like "she only got success because of her looks"... Seriouslyy? This is 2024 not 1974, grow the f up!
Yep. How great her work looks. Focus on making good work and you stand a better chance at success, rather than chudding it up in RUclips comments. Saying someone succeeds because of some other advantage is an excuse. A person can be attractive and good at what they do. The two things don't have to be related. The people who have to hand over actual money for making things wouldn't make their money back off a spot that doesn't even feature the attractive person BEHIND the camera. But if you really think that was an advantage she leveraged, figure out what yours are. You live in a place with great shooting locations? You know someone who has a great story you can make something about? Got a cute dog you can put in a video? Keep your eyes on your goals.
Oh, absolutely, because success is never influenced by factors like appearance or connections, it’s always 100% hard work and talent. I’m sure the marketing industry spends billions on good looks purely out of boredom, not because it actually works. But hey, keep fighting the good fight in RUclips comments - your wisdom is surely changing lives 😂 @@PeppermintGentleman
5k? uh......did you see that gear theyre using? Thats a misleading figure, sure it might have all be owned already, but thats like saying "it only cost me $100 dollars to drive there" yeah in your lambo, that you owned already. That drive cost more than $100. Her commercial cost far more than 5k
I am in the film industry and have been since the 80s and I can promise you there’s no way that $5000 is going to get you production like this. This is seriously misleading and helps no one
The $5k was most likely referring to 'out of pocket' or hard costs...the remainder of the production expenses would have been a lot of free labor from crew and editor and massively discounted rates from rental house, location fees, craft/food services, etc.

Video breakdowns like this make things look far more accessible than they look. I really enjoyed and walked away feeling inspired AND capable.
Man the amount of new knowledge I learn from your channel is always amazing
Thanks for sharing this story, super inspiring to see someone who's dealt with the triangle so well

Look at Sofia getting a good run in her career ... nice to see her shine. Worked with her a couple of times. Wonderful person to chat with too,.

It's a win win for both parties. You get more work from your spec, and you go to them more frequently for rentals due to that increased work.

$5k for that spec ad is incredible!! Def thought it was $100k plus!! Love seeing her spec work.
And I seay it could've evene been possible with 1K
So great content and I am very happy you added it to cinematic eye. That is amazing! Thank you!
Glad to share it!
This is such a high value video guys. Hats off! Thank you
So happy to hear that!
Great video! Great insights in the video Mark
Thanks brother
Go Sofia! Need to do some spec work going into 2025. Thanks Mark for featuring women in cinema 💪
She’s amazingly talented
Love this video. Currently shooting a passion project of my own
Very instructive vid!👏 and so true about passion projects, they are a MUST
This is AWESOME!
i did something similar and it launched my career as well. Now I'm working on million dollar films. but yes it has to be good.
Sweet breakdown
Great stuff, thumbs up for the haircut 😊
I rewatched Trudeau tumbling down the stairs for close to 5 minutes. Pretty cathartic #canadian
Great vidéo, thanks for the tips
Can’t find the video in the cinematic eye course??

It will be uploaded very soon!
Can we get a link to the ad?
Does someone have a few tips on how to become steadicam operator?
Is that a C200 at 4.36?
How does one go about finding local talent for a small business commercial?
