Never realized they painted their door in tardis blue before. Nice detail.
Only paint that was left
The house is blue, but has the same yellow/orange interior

@@lejyby yes but it isn’t in Britain where this is set
@@jennifermountain9876 I was wondering. It is mentioned in some songs in French ("La chanson des restaurants du coeur", www.paroles.net/jean-jacques-goldman/paroles-les-restos-du-coeur), and a quick search on the net indicates that it is still a tradition in Poland (culture.pl/en/article/why-do-poles-leave-one-chair-empty-on-christmas-eve). I wonder if it could have been a (religious?) tradition in (some parts of) England at some point, and if the episode made a reference to that?
I absolutely love this scene, not only did they reunite but the doctor also cried tears of joy when he realised that he had somewhere he could belong aside from the Tardis.
It hits much harder when the doctor realize he lost his home again in angel takes manhattan
Dorieke Beek xmas special the doctor the witch and the wardrobe
Happy tears
It’s not just that, it also calls back to the line about ‘what’s the point in being happy now, if they’re going to be sad later?’ Which is also applicable to the doctor himself and outliving his companions. Yet he returns to them at the end, because later sadness shouldn’t stop us from being happy now.
And then they both died lol
I love that Amy defends River and calls her a good girl, it's such a motherly thing and I love it so much
"She's a good girl"..... she says in such a "mother" way about a child far older than her. Lol
@@kevoconnor145 It's still her child.
@@HarryJamesPotter7 I'm not denying that. It's just cute/funny how she talks about a daughter who's older than her, like she's 6 yrs old.

Why do people hate this era it's one of the best if not the best Amy and Rory were the closest thing he had to a family
I mean he's their son-in-law
Some random Guy just... just who hates this era ? Know no one that hates this era
People always complain to try sound sophisticated like they explore ideas of fine arts or to try be the special snowflake who’s different. They’re the people who are part of the “new doctor hate bandwagon” where they whine about every post-regeneration doctor because the prior doctor was “better”.
It happened with Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi and look at them now, they’re the most beloved Doctors.
Never met a person on the internet who hates this era. And it's by far my most favourite.
It was really good but idk I really did not connect with Amy
I love the almost parental role Amy and Rory take towards the doctor here. He hasn't shown up in two years, but after a brief telling off it's all hugs and there's a place for him at the dinner table because of course there is-that's what family means.
Well, they ARE his mother(and father)-in-law! 😂 I think Amy, perhaps more so than Rory, feel like he has to be taken care of now more than ever, for River.
she still tried to shag him
@@toasterroast7678 Well that was before familial bonds were realized.
@@FranciumBoron No she knows shes his mother in law here, she references it when river tells her the doctor is alive
It also makes it more realistic. They’ve aged and become more mature. He’s now there son in law too. It’s odd that they never explored Amy having abandonment issues though. The doctor left her as a child, left her again for two years in the first episode, then again when Amy was left behind for around 40 years in an alternate time stream, now again here. Then again throughout season 7.
Smith, Gillan and Darvill were Steven Moffat's golden era on the show.
arguable but still good
Chibnall is the shit era of dr who
You say that but he wrote Blink, girl in the fireplace, the two empty child episodes and the two silence of the library episodes in Tennants era all arguably better than anything he wrote during Matt Smith's era
@@PlayupskybIues Those are excellent episodes. Empty Child/Doctor Dances is when I really started to like Chris Eccleston as the Doctor (Plus he intro'd Capt Jack - one of the best recurring characters imho. on the same level as River)
@@ScorpiusZA. yeah love how he did Rivers arc making tennant not know him something plausible in the show that hadn't been done despite being glaringly obvious that he would meet people and them know him but not the other way around
This scene is pure beauty. The way he realizes that they're not just his companions, not just his friends but family. And behind a door painted in Tardis blue he doesn't just find a house but a home so in a way he walks through a blue door and what he finds is bigger on the inside.

Such a great relationship between the three.
The more and more I rewatch series 5-7a, the more I miss these times.
Yeah, same here. Matt, Karen and Arthur was perfect in their roles...
Now this was true friendship, didn't feel forced or artificial by stating it all the time and not acting accordingly ( right? Season 11 ? )
Those times have sadly gone now

@@izzyallen2148 I personally like to think they don't just do it at Christmas, that they always have a place set for their 1200 year old son in law
I love them. They I felt were more like the doctors family than any of the other companions. Rose was a love, Martha and Jack great friends, Donna was his best friend, Clara was a crush, and River was his wife, with Bill as a friend. But Amy and Rory, they were his family
I'd say Bill was a sort of granddaughter that he didn't knew very well until she grew up.
@@G.F.SF55 He did have a more teaching role with her, but its wasn't as close as they could have been. Needed more time together
I agree.
I say Clara became his equal and most closest companion. Definitely started as a crush but I say as the doctor and her relationship evolve. She’s the closest friend/family ever to him knowing him on an in-depth level that no one else gets too
@@GamerXPERhonestly, 12 and Clara have been the closest I’ve ever seen a companion, like true familial platonic love, its so heartwarming. Because idk its a lovely idea that you can become so deeply attached and connected with someone that they become your family, not by blood or circumstance, but by the relationship formed between them. They have such a wonderful relationship, not becuz its perfect, but because the Doctor goes too far and makes mistakes out of that unconditional love, and its mutual.
"River told us.""Well of course she did.""She's a good girl!"
David Tennant may be the favourite doctor for many but Matt Smith is always my favourite doctor
For me too
I didn't like 10th so much. He was too goofy and Wacky when he ain't Serious.
11th is My Favorite.
The Calm Childish act is total flip from his dark side when he was willing to do the dirty job was scary! Like that one guy He straight up killed with Homing Missiles (I won't say who)
Or Was willing to Get a Alien Butcher for Turning poeple into weapons or The Mind Flip with the Cyber Planner Or how much anger He expresses when Someone messed with his family...
I mean 10th is alright. But his Emotional range is meh compared to 11. Also 11 never kept anything of Rose that was of any significance. 11 has Amy's Glasses and Rory's BrotherHood.
He wasn't Just 11. He is *DOCTOR Pond*
Matt Smith’s tenure was the first I ever saw or even heard of doctor who and while I do like what other actors brought to the role I always find myself missing him.

I love that they actually treat him like a son-in-law, like a family member, lecturing him about the fact he hasn't shown up to visit in so long, guilt-tripping him, only to then admit that despite all of that, they still love him and were still happy to set a place for him, regardless of the fact they knew he would not come.
This was when the doctor had a family😢
Edit: I know a lot of people are bringing up Susan, and yes I do know about Susan, but I don't exactly mean an actual family, I mean that the relationship that 11 had with the ponds was really close and they really had a family dynamic because of the way they cared for each other, which is clearly shown when amy says that they always have a place set for him🥺 He has a family to spend Christmas with. Even though he has all of time and space he went right back to Amy and Rory... his family😭
Well, again, anyway.
There was his original family, back on Gallifrey, then his daughter Jenny, he did technically marry Marilyn Monroe AND Queen Elizabeth.
God, The Doctors family tree is really bloody confusing.
Only people with a complicated family tree close to it are Snow White and Regina from Once Upon a Time, Regina being Snow's stepmother but also the stepmother of Snow's grandson, making her grandson her stepbrother, which would make her own daughter her mother by proxy and....
Okay, no. My head hurts now. Once Upon a Time's Snow White has a WAY more complicated and confusing family tree than The Doctor.
He has had loads of family
But this one yh is actully relation as river married the doctor
But he also had one with rose
@@MichaelM28 yep, and since she was his granddaughter, one of her parents had to be The Doctor's kid.
I know about Susan she was his family too. Bit i don't just mean as in proper family I mean like the way they were with each other and how much they cared and loved each other. Even though he actually is their family it's not about that. It's about the relationship he had with the Ponds. In laws or not they will always be the doctors family. And that's why i love them so much and miss them even more😢
Well, she has a new "fam" now.
Amy: We're about to have Christmas dinner. Joining us?
Doctor: if it's no trouble?!
Rory: There's a plate set for you.
Doctor: but you didn't know I was coming why would you...

That part always gets me, because that's the moment he realizes he has a family again. He's so happy he even sheds a tear.
I love how Rory just nods and points to Amy. Such a married couple .

This scene shows how 11 is so much different than 10, Donna offered him a spot at the table during Christmas and he took off without even saying no
11 is a lot more social, not in the sense that he talks to people but that he is actually friends with his friends
Also 10 was still mourning Rose. Note that 10 did participate in Christmas dinner with Rose, Jackie and Mickey.
And you forgot how he accepted similar proposal from Jason Lake in the Next Doctor.
Christmas Dinner has a special part in The Doctor's heart. He spend his first one (as Tenth Doctor) with Rose, and he hold this dearly. He literally still hours after losing Rose when he met Donna. He couldn't enjoy another Christmas Dinner again until The (fake) Doctor invited him, which ironically also his last before his "death".
You have to remember he had just met Donna at this point and he even says that he had just lost rose which was his first Christmas dinner. He holds them very close to his heart. He hadn’t recovered yet
that was right after he’d lost rose, when they actually become friends in season 4 its very genuine
"She's a good girl!" She sounds so MOTHERLY when she says it...and the fact they both refuse to hug first.
One of my favourite scenes
I love how Rory just casually says “not dead then?” as if it was something common. Like when you go to a party and someone says “oh you didn’t bring alcohol, that’s okay”
I mean he is the man who dies and dies again so death is kinda just another day in the life of for him
"I forgot to die" Clara
The whole ‘always having a seat ready for him’ reminds me of when 11 finds out Brig died in the Nursing Home. The Brigadier always insisted that a glass be ready for the Doctor, in case he ever decided to pop by for a visit. ❤️ The Doctor has plenty of people who would welcome him with open arms if he ever felt the need to stop by. I’m happy Amy and Rory showed him that.

@@sandyqureshi4938 The secret lesson to be learned in some of the older New Who episodes where like shots of emotion injected straight into your heart. Honestly his interactions with his companions are my favorite of all the series. You can tell they all mean so much to him in everything he does and says
Matt Smith is the only doctor who can actually make me cry cause i can feel his emotion through the TV. I miss him dearly, but he had a great run.
Matt Smith was my favorite Doctor. Super hardcore fans of the show will find million arguments why he wasn't great, and call those who like him a dirty casual. But he was just so unpretentious. Effortlessly weird, lighthearted, and charismatic. Also, Amy and Rory are absolutely one of the best companions. In terms of character development they've come the longest way compared to anybody else IMO. And became just as important to the show as the Doctor himself.
always so happy cause he otherwise he would be so very very sad :c
Are you some sort of fool ? I've ever seen a bad review of Matt Smith ever ..he is pretty much lauded as the best new who ..what the Christ have you been drinking man? Show me one bad review of Smith and I'll show you a freezing cold hell
Bloody fool
I love David and Eccleston, and Peter a lot. But Matt's era was just magical. It brought that air of fantasy and living in a dream vibe that fits perfectly with The Doctor. He is The Docttor like the rest of em and whoever calls his fans casuals are just plain stupid
This would have been the perfect 'last appearance' for Amy an Rory, rather than the contrived 'leave them somewhere so they don't die, just like Rose' setup.
I like to imagine that Amy and Rory always set a place for The Doctor in case he tries (and possibly succeeds) to see them again even after The Angels take them
Oh absolutley. I'm sure they always had hope to hear that wheezing noise somehow someday
A part of me likes to pretend this takes place sometime after Angels take Manhattan. I know it doesn't but it makes it much better as a scene in my opinion.
@SoulSandStripe Gamer It does have some traction behind it since Amy and Rory have suddenly broken up in the next episode.
It might for him
Aman Network just rewatched it with that thought in my head and its 10x better
Aand... This hurts
No, it doesn't make this scene better. In this Xmas special The Doctor doesn't understood happy crying, because he doesn't have a family. At the end the episode he realized he has a family and finally happy tears came from him. This the scene The Doctor realized how important The Ponds meant for him. Because of this scene Amy and Rory's departure was so hard for The Doctor. Your theory is cool, but it's better to think this scene was happened before series 7.
1:33
“Because we always do” after she said that that’s when it hit him that they truly consider him part of their family not just a companion a friend but a family member.

No woke, tans or pronoun bullsh1t either. A huge plus.
@@steveross8364 Said by someone who's clearly never watched Doctor Who before. The show has always been progressive buddy, cry about it xD
@@RecordGuyJ You are an idi0t. I watched and supported Dr Who since Jon Pertwee's time, right up to Peter Capaldi's time. Yes the show has been mildly progressive before and that's ok but now the Woke gender sh1t is just too much and it's doing great harm - not only to society but to a franchise where it has no purpose being in the first place. If you want that in your programmes, put it in Eastenders where it's relevent to what's happening in realtime. DON'T put it in a sci-fi entertainment show where it ISN'T and cram it down the throats of people who don't want it in their escapism. This is why Dr Who ratings are TANKING and the franchise is DYING, not that I expect you to give a sh1t about that, sounds like you only care about pushing some agenda from your multi-colured soapbox.
This is why Matt Smith is my favorite Doctor, especially with Amy and Rory. No matter what they were doing, whether it was exploring new galaxies, attending weddings, or just sitting on the couch watching TV together, they all had fun together.
One of the reasons losing Amy and rory hurt him so much was because they were more than your typical companion. They accepted him into their family and loved him in a way he probably hadn't felt since his grand-daughter.
2000 years. 2000 years he finally realize he always have a home
not quite, he had a home with unit with 3rd and 4th! 1000 years before he found a home again, not 2
We need more Doctor-companion interactions like this. More family, less "fam."

100% correct
1:44 This expression is so amazing. No matter how many times he put his friends in Danger and left them behind for their safety, they always welcome him to stay. He looked like a child who already accepted getting denied by them instead they waited for him to come home.
The “We always do” hits right in the feels!
1:50 poor Eleven looks so vulnerable when he realizes for the first time he has a family outside of the TARDIS that he came come to if he needs
And then they get zapped back in past :(
Matt is and shall always be my favorite Doctor. This scene with Amy and Rory definitely plucks at our heartstrings. This is how I will always remember them.
When they say they always set a place for him it makes my heart melt
This ending is so special...the new doctors “fam” is absolutely nothing, nothing compared to this...this right here is pure raw love and what family looks like, the doctors face when he was hugging Amy was the look of love and of course when he realised they had already had a plate set for him I think that was what produced tears, in all that happened in the wedding of river song they always knew he would come back to them, especially at Christmas, this is a beautiful moment and only makes the ending of the angels take Manhattan even more brutal...
*"She's a good girl!"*
Awwh, Amy going mama bear is the cutest 💙
This scene, and taking Van Gogh to the museum... man, the Smith era of Who had some wonderfully emotional scenes... T-T
One of, if not my most favorite era of Doctor Who. Wasn't perfect, but moments like this helped it rank high on my list. The Ponds were my favorite companions and-maybe cause I'm a sentimental idiot-that might be because I just love wholesome family/friendship stuff.
The Capaldi era will (probably) always be my favorite period of the new series (favorite Doctor, too), but I forgot how brilliant and lovable this TARDIS team is! When the Doctor finally realized he has a new family, it's just one of the most beautiful and heart-warming moments this show has ever produced!
Probably the first time in centuries he's actually sat down for Christmas dinner with the people he loves. All that traveling and running, and fighting. This is probably the most normal and wholesome thing he's done in a long time and you can see it on his face. The closest he'll come to having a real family again.
This is something I think is lacking in the show nowadays 0:42-1:17, moments where you feel these are people who know each other and have history instead of being just character walking through a plot. And if not this, just look at the Doctor and Jamie or the Doctor and Ace.
RoboticRob ACE!!!!!!!!!!

I love this scene so much... Especially taking the later episode from 12's run, Listen. In that episode we found out that The Doctor never really had a "family" and was made to sleep in the shed, because they thought he "would never be a Time Lord." whoever is running the show now, please bring Matt back, out of every doctor he knew how to make us smile and now with Jodie as the funny doctor now it would be perfect for them to both meet eachother.
Jodie is a terrible doctor (no offense to jodie or anything)
@@otakushutin It isn't that she is a bad actor, she just has a terrible writer. If RTD was still writing, or Moffat was still here, she would be better. You have a problem with the writer, don't scapegoat the actor. Besides, she kept the dress sense of the doctor intact.
Aydan Cooper imo she’s good, she’s no 10 or 11 but she’s good she just has a bad season, but Peter capaldi had a weak season and his finale is one of the best two parters with both masters and Cybermen.
@@andrewlocke9674 I really like Jodie's Doctor, but the largest flaw is the writing and the lack of huge, coherent overarching story. From day 1 of Matt we were wondering what the crack in the wall was, with 9th we had Bad Wolf (though that came later), etc, etc. I feel like a cool thing to play with for Jodie is that she's a free Doctor. She knows she didn't kill gallifrey, but since she's free, she doesn't know what to do. In the setup for tea at Yaz', she looks lonely and sad because she has nothing to do. She's free, but also bored.
@@otakushutin Jodie is only terrible because she is forced to carry out the propaganda and political views of BBC. With good scripts, some character development and logical build up the series can be saved. BBC can still bring in propaganda and political views, but as undertones and not as main focus. It works for Discovery, well most of the time as it did in the last two seasons of Capaldi.

The way he's hesitant at going in, as if he can't believe that he means so much to these people and he's influenced their lives so much in such a positive way, even after everything that's happened, they love him. It's like he's waiting for it to break, or he doesn't want to mess things up by stepping into the house and something goes wrong.
to me it always seemed like this moment not only hit the doctor as "i have a family", its a mix feeling of the sense of Christmas with family and friends, Matt smith also deliver a moment of "why didn't i come earlier" or "i was wrong about taking a step back"
and from the eyes of a time traveler who consistently run away from everything the feeling of "its ok to just sit and enjoy this moment HERE"
you mean " I have a family AGAIN" after how many centuries. We've seen his loneliness through the years many times, but to be able to rest again, wonderful. Remember he is a husband and a father and a grandfather, but not for a looooong time!
It's so heart warming to see his reaction... he realizes that no matter what happens, no matter what he does, they will always care about him.
Matt’s 11th Doctor can always make me laugh and cry in the same episode. How I miss him!!
The characters here are so 3 dimensional and actually are much more complex compared to the bland 2d characters we have in series 11. I miss moments like this. I guess with better story writing and character writing these moments could exist in series 11 but I doubt it will till the writer changes.

"Because we ALWAYS set a place for you!"
@Ri Chester yes... but they never actually show how
the Doctor/Amy/Rory. Still the best Doctor/companion combo
Why is no one talking about the 4 knocks the Doctor does?
He knocks in a rhythm of 4 knocks in a row, thought that was a nice throwback to David's era by Matt.
Please don't start
the first time I heard that I almost fell out of my chair
I think there was a theory that said that this version of the Doctor was the Doctor after losing the Ponds, which makes this even more emotional
Oh jeez that makes it even more emotional. The hair and everything is exactly the same too. Makes the visit to the Ponds in Series 7 feel more distant as he truly didn't see them since Series 6
Amelia's theme.. Chills
This era was probably the best. I miss eleven so much
So sweet to see the doctor be a part of a family like this I love it
They always set him a place.
If u wanna cry just watch this, best doctor best companions ever.
However massive stars they are now this will always be the foundation of the 3 of them.
"It's Christmas, you moron!"-- Maybe the most loving phrase in the entire series.
Absolutely one of my favorite scenes on the entire Who series. The refusing to hug first; the Tardis blue of the door; and the fact that the Ponds set a place at the dinner table for him each year...this was a family who loved one another dearly.
This is why the Doctor/Ponds run is favorite in the Dargan Household, and also why "Angels in Manhattan" is one of my favorite episodes, because Amy's monologue at the end and that smile at the sound of the Tardis said it all.
"So. You're not dead." "And a happy new year!" New Year's Eve atmosphere two years running now.
"You're not dead..."
"AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR"
This scene, is by far my favourite out of the entirety of Matt's time as The Doctor. After so long, years of thinking he's alone in the universe he finally realised that he had a family. Tennant may be my favourite Doctor but Smith will always excel in special places
I involuntarily smile when Amy opens the door, every time.
This was beautiful and also amazing. Seeing the Doctor for once being taken cared of and having a place to call home when he has always taken cared of everyone else. Just seeing his emotions and him happy was tear jerking.
your not dead...
*AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR* XD🤣 :D
This is one of the millions of reasons why i love doctor who and why its my fave tv show :)
MERRY XMAS WHOVIANS😉😊😝😜😛🙃🍪
Ablin Reko stfu
Yes, Emoji officer, this one right here.
“We always do” holds a little sadness and a lot of Hope.
amy and rory were the best companions ever. the doctor will never have a relationship with any other companions like he did with them
One of the best scenes ever. Loved Matt Smith as the Doctor. I'm not afraid to admit I cried at this scene and it still gets me every time 😭
