Liked the constrasting vocals on display here, covering both ends of the scale. Good stuff.

    Such a lovely album.
Highly recommend checking out more of their stuff, all of it is brilliant & they just released a new record yesterday!

You're correct again, Jim! Alcest are one of my favorites, for sure. I've come close to selecting the album I sent you a few times for my membership reaction. 😁
We've heard them twice on the channel, Kodama was from the series of donation rewards you did. The other was on my Drift mixtape.

Ahhhhh…… Yes! Spiritual Instinct….. I recognised the cover during the second video (spoiler alert!) but couldn’t immediately place it. Of course, my mind these days!!!!!

Hope you can get in soon, but i had pains in the gut for years, turned out to be IBS, but there were so many tests and it was so expensive ruling everything truly bad out.

I hope you feel better soon Jim! I love this album. It was my introduction to Alcest. 🫶

I got into them early and it's so good to find new people finding them!

This album and the one after are both superb. This is the sort of music I aspire to write, you were spot on, hybrid of black metal and post rock. Very cool. I feel the harsh vocals really add a lot of texture and intensity, especially with this post rock style the vocals always sound so distant and low in the mix, it’s less of a “lead” instrument, it just adds this layer in the middle of a very layered song. Really enjoyed the video and the reaction, thank you!

Always wondered why the vocals weren't prominent now I understand they're a part of the music. Nice to add quality music to my life.

    Sorry to hear you’re suffering.
I know what it is to not be able to eat what you want. I have IBS so it’s a big no no to most fruits, several vegetables (of course the ones I really like), lots of vegetables only in moderation, no lactose containing foods, no coffee 😢 etc.
I hope it’s curable soon and nothing really serious. Wish you the best.
    Yes, Alcest.
I like them a lot as long as they’re singing and not growling as you just mentioned Jim😊. This album is new to me.
This sounds great. My French isn’t that great so I don’t understand much of what they’re singing; if it’s French of course.
Why oh why this whisper growling 😡. Luckily it’s only for a short while.

It's not that much of a stretch to enjoy both styles of vocals on this or similar albums as long as they're adept at both, as Alcest are. The contrast between the two is often what makes such albums stand out. I saw them live a few years ago and was mightily impressed. Book me in for side 2.
PS. It's either an ulcer or the fitba' (probably both). C'mon Scotland! (I say this with no expectation whatsoever. Crushing disappointment is what causes the ulcer in the first place.)

Some of their other songs have a made up language, so you wont need to worry about not understanding the french!
I got jnto these after listening to Agalloch. I generally don't like black metal, but really like it here. It just seems the best form of singing for desperate pain.

My sympathies regarding your ailment Jim. I was put on a low carb diet back in February due to type 2 diabetes and frankly a life without chips, cakes, pasta etc ain't worth living. I don't stick to it rigidly otherwise i'd go nuts.....anyways, love the music.

During the opener I couldn't decide what I thought of the song, but ultimately I think I found it a little boring. When you mentioned that you were waiting for some harsher vocals to kick in I was also thinking to myself that it was missing something. Second track was definitely a lot more interesting. I'm not sure I enjoy the big echo-y soundscape, but it's interesting.

This kinda thing is certainly not for everyone, but I think what you find a little boring about it is what fascinates me with this band (and other, similar acts). It's not music I'd listen to all the time, but it's great for chill listening sessions, all alone in the dark. The big echo-y soundscape with the push and pull dynamics of the otherwise simple compositions are what really get my motor running. And speaking of motors running. If quiet listening sessions in the dark aren't your speed, try this on your next roadtrip. Perfect companion to long empty stretches of road in the American southwest.

@@GrizzlyAt0ms I'll definitely finish the album. It's not quite on the "I don't like this" scale of things, but nothing has made me think I'd want to re-listen (yet).
