How & when to use LESS, FEWER, LESSER, and LEAST in English

- Do you want to make less mistakes in English? Or should I say “fewer mistakes”? A common grammar mistake is to use “less” instead of “fewer” in these kinds of sentences. Another common mistake is to misuse the words “less” and “lower”. In this lesson, we will look at the main differences in the uses and meanings of “less”, “fewer”, and “lower”. I will also teach you how to use the adjectives “lesser” and “least”, as well as the verb “lessen”. Even native English speakers get these words confused sometimes, but after watching, you will know exactly which one to use and when! And if you are doing the IELTS soon, this will help you with Task 1. You will get a chance to practice by doing a quiz afterwards at www.engvid.com...
There are many more words that even native English speakers mix up! Watch my latest video to learn 14 expressions that people often don't even know they're using incorrectly: ruclips.net/video/Ls7-y_r6bHk/видео.html

Han Han Looks like you’re doing quite well my friend.
nice lesson how and when to use less
Hi Adam, I just learned 'lesser' from you. Please explain as well about this:
1. little (means small in size) - more little/littler - littlest.
2. little (small amount of) - less - least.
I found it in the internet and am not sure of nmbr 1. Thank you.
Sanggar Batikkita 👨🏻🏫 Hello, Sanggar. Mr Teacher here in England 🏴. I have an answer to your question, which I have just found.
We do not use ‘more’ here. Words such as ‘little’ or ‘small’ come in three regular levels of measurement - little, littler and littlest. Small, smaller and smallest. They also have their opposites - big, bigger and biggest. Large, larger and largest. Watch out for those that are irregular 😯 such as good, better and best for example.
Examples for you -The ginger kitten is small, the grey kitten is smaller but the white kitten is the smallest of them.
My motorbike is fast but my brother’s car is faster. However, my friend’s racing car is the fastest.
What you have done is good but it could be better if you practice. Then you might hit be the best in the class.
Omg Adam... It seemed like I had taken a roller coaster ride ☺
Excellent video, Sir. Keep it on.

I have a question about " Tech companies have fewer costs " so the question would be " how many " right? If it's countable
Hi dear Adam, I have a question. Why "lower quality" is not hyphenated, while "lower-risk" is? Thanks thousand times.
Mohamadali Panahi 👨🏻🏫 Hello, Mohamadali. Mr Teacher here in England 🏴. I have an answer to your question. There is no need for a hyphen in either example. The sentence in the video is quite clear without it.
I thought it was confusing word not confused word. Because the word is action giver to make us confused. We the confused people (action Receiver) are confused by the confusing word.
syarif bustaman 👨🏻🏫 Hell, Syarif. Mr Teacher here in England 🏴. Both ‘confused’ and ‘confusing’ are correct. Here ‘confused ‘ means mixed up or muddled together. For example - My English language students often confused ‘ate’ with ‘eat’. Using ‘confusing’ refers to what is happening to those students. The words are confusing them.
Thank you so much❤
You’re a good teacher, but i think the lesson is rarely fast for me
Good video
good videos!
Like as always👍
What about "diminish"? May I use it instead of lessen or mitigate?
Samanta Guf 👨🏻🏫 Hello, Samanta. Mr Teacher here in England 🏴. My answer to your question is yes, you can use ‘diminish’ with these words. It is similar to ‘lessen’ but suggests a continuous but fairly slow decrease in something.
Thank You.
wooow , thanks a lot sir.
My teacher tried to explain for 5 days but he couldn't do it :))).
Thanks sir
Oh boy! This lesson was hard for me!
Hi.. I'm really want to know the study strategy for IELTS.
Should I finish all Cambridge IELTS listening, then writing, reading & speaking test?!
Which order should I follow..?
Moyej Uddin 👨🏻🏫 Hello, Moyer. Mr Teacher here in England 🏴. My advice concerning the IELTS strategy is this. Concentrate on the one area that you find most difficult first. I expect the listening / speaking to be more challenging to you, so do what you can with them first. There are many RUclips channels you could use to listen to and copy what is spoken. Remember practice is everything towards achieving a good IELTS assessment.
Would u pls write words a little larger for more visibility? Thanks
Nice
My idol
There are ........than 20 people on the bus today.(less-fewer)
Touba Yousseff 👨🏻🏫 Hello, Touba. Mr Teacher here in England 🏴. The correct answer to your question is ‘fewer’ because you can count people in 1,2,3. . . form.
It seems very few Americans understand the less/fewer usage. Don't know how this started but all of a sudden, people from the president down cannot speak properly. We are just dumbed down.
you should tell us when we say "by" and when we use "from", how can i say : this letter is written by me -- or from me , or this cake is made by me or from me ? which is correct , or he is called by me or from me ?, by email or from email ....etc...
duruma taichi 👨🏻🏫 Hello, Durana. Mr Teacher here in England 🏴. These two words are quite similar. They refer to either AGENCY (who) or PROCESS (how). Sometimes they are both 🤔! You are the agent of the letter (because you wrote it) and you are the person who processed it (by posting it). The same answer applies to the cake. It was by you (you baked the cake) and from you (at a birthday party). The email query does not use both words in the example you give. It was from you to your friend. However, it was written by you.
i like it when you say "but".
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Hello, Do you teach personal classes? if so, how to contact you? Roxy
If i make a sentence like this is correct or not?
• i need to lessen the high rate of Malnutrition in my country.
eagle fly 👨🏻🏫 Hello. Mr Teacher here in England 🏴. It is more common to use ‘reduce’ in your sentence as you are writing about a measurement. If you use ‘lessen’ you are writing about the effects of malnutrition on the population.
Can someone help me? What is the correct one?
The longer study your suggestions, the least I like them
