Why are people criticising? This was from a time before the internet and social media, a time before self-titled “experts” felt the need to criticise. These blokes were out to have a good to time and maybe take a few rabbits, not raping the countryside for all it’s worth. Their ferrets may have been a bit chunky along with their dogs but who gives a toss? They still worked. Sorry but it really pisses me off! There is a lot to learn from people like this, especially if people weren’t so quick to judge and criticise.
There's always going to be people like that. I go sea-fishing and I still get comments about my beloved pastime. Just continue doing what you enjoy. There will *always* be people like that and they're entitled to their opinions too, remember.
I knew these two lads and i was a member of the ferret club that they ran in the early 80s based in halifax ,They used to run the ferret show and racing at chatsworth game fair for several years and also at other shows in the yorkshire area.I can assure you that these gents knew the ferreting game inside out and they caught a large number of rabbits on the Bolton Abbey estate for many years.Sadly i heard that Ken had died at the early age of 49 from a heart attack
John - England has always been changing as does the world in general. The 80's were shit; no jobs, Thatcher and greed is good, so don't tell us everything was brilliant back then, it wasn't.
Glorious Yorkshire in a time we'll never see again unfortunately,, simple times. Not like today where everyone is in a rush and they don't take the time to relax and appreciate life. Thanks for sharing this video.
Over here in South Africa we hunt rabbits at night with a 4x4 with very bright spotlights and double barreled shotguns, and with Jack Russell's and Fox Terriers... so if anyone would love to criticize anyone let them criticize us over here - each one to him/herself - if you don't like the heat then stay out of the kitchen... My dad took me ferreting when I was about five and I was hooked. Ive had ferrets most of my life but not anymore but still have the odd day out with my mate. Its not just about catching rabbits but being out in the countryside seeing the wildlife.
The one that got away lives to breed another day, love this video I remember rushing home from a days pigeon shooting to watch this video 3 great lads, Jack makes me laugh when the rabbit startled him bolting out of his home all good fun, and yes the English country side is beautiful love it.
Used to ferret with a friend in the South of England growing up before Mixy was introduced. Rabbits are not a native species to Britain, introduced by the Romans. They were everywhere, dangerous for livestock and the landowner would pay a bounty of a penny an ear. Could buy a lot with a penny, in those days! We kept the carcass. Great show!
A fascinating insight into the proper way of ferret hunting and the passion involved. I remember clearly having rabbit frequently on our table and once on holiday we were given a hare. Largely disappeared off the table these days.
Richard thanks for these great films, he was a true country gentleman and sportsman, I so appreciated what he said when after the geese " a brace is plenty no need to shoot more" a shame more people don't shoot with this motto in mind. (particularly the Americans!) Thanks again Nick

No, not fainting, just disgusted by perverted people with no respect for wildlife. Anyone who finds the abuse of defenceless animals "lovely" needs careful watching, particularly around children. That included Jack Charlton who always gave me the impression that the reason he did not like the animals he persecuted was because he saw them as a challenge to his intellectual prowess, and judging by that perpetually clueless look on his face, he was probably right.
