I used to sit on the sofa with my dad and watch Jack on a Sunday afternoon, thanks for taking me back to a time when things were simpler.
Born in 1958. Jack Hargreaves is as much a part of my life and memories as my parents and grandparents. Thank you so much for these lovely, decent and thoughtful films.
I just checked, Jack was born in 1911, I was born in 1950 and I knew he was much older than me.
@@ricochet2977 Well done. It would have been difficult for Jack to have spent "six years away" during the second war had he been born in 1958. I meant I was born then and had been seeing Hargreaves on TV from as early as I can remember.

@@ricochet2977 Same year as me and I used to watch Jack when I lived on the outskirts of London never imagining that one day I would work with him as an editor and then go on to produce 60 programmes with him for Channel 4.

@@ricochet2977 Yes How was being made when I started at Southern TV although I had no involvement in it. Jack was also responsible for House Party which was very popular.
Just beautiful when the world was sane
The World has never been sane but there are people like Jack who could refine reality into something simple, quiet and beautiful.
What I find so surreal now ! Is how I would sit down with my grandad and watch Jack on TV religiously and it only feels like a few years ago. Both my grandson's sat and watched some episodes with me last weekend.
They are lucky grand children. You are giving them a glimpse of sanity.
This set of videos and the music take me back because i remember watching them as a child i do not recollect this particular one but Jacks presenting style coupled with the film is spot on. Always a pleasure to see them.

Jack has a proper sense of how nature is and needs her time to recuperate. He has a sense of energy conservation, just like the sawyer in the first vid too. Thank you, as always Dave for allowing this important archive to be seen by all.
I do find these videos very calming to watch. In a busy life, to take half an hour out and watch these remastered episodes seems to have a positive and calming impact - thanks Dave for taking the effort to upload them to RUclips.

I used to watch Jack on the program “How” when I was a kid, such a simple life with few concerns even though we didn’t have a pot to pee in, now we have nothing but propaganda and fear.

Jack Hargreaves was a true countryman with a great knowledge of the outdoors and the wildlife within it, he had a great knowledge of country crafts and customs, I really miss this program it was my favourite program, he was a great man, RIP Jack Hargreaves 🌹

Often in these truly great little videos, we see great skill and understanding of the natural world, and technology devised and used by real people, who know exactly how it works. Most of us today have been forced into dependency on digital systems designed by remote people, whose workings are a complete mystery to us. And when these systems fail, there is nobody able to deal with the failure. As the digitally abused postmasters of Britain have had to suffer. The digital dehumanisation of society. Look at the skill of the sawyer with his steam saw, or all the other master artisans Jack and Dave Knowles show us. Today, most people couldn't do anything without a bloody "app". I insist on refusing to have a "smart phone". A PC, telephone and a letter box are enough. As the great Ogden Nash said: Progress was a good thing once. But then it went too far. Thank you Dave Kwowles. Your kindness in giving us these treasues is a great gift.

Brilliant dave takes me back to the 70 s when I was a boy and helped dad on a Sunday morning cut up the firewood on our sawbench run by belt from a lister engine keep them coming l look every Sunday for these treasures😊

Thanks Dave once again for your excellent films.The gamekeepers years ago use to wear bowler hats to protect themselves from poachers wielding shillelaghs.The Holkham Estate gamekeepers still wear them now just for tradition.
Jacks programmes remind me of my youth in the 70’s & 80’s & how things have changed so much now.

Dave, once again you have shared with us all an absolute 'classic', thank you....apart from the industrial history of the Sawyer, we also had some wondeful examples of some leisure fishing, with Jack catching his first tench of the new season, as well as some excellent pipe action from JH, which looked like his favourite Falcon, and also possibly a Peterson. Wonderful twenty four minutes or so of complete escapism, as I joined smoking one of my own Falcons filled with some Rich Dark Honeydew, a favourite blend of his. 🙏 Steve.

I remember being a young boy and my friends and I going out to fish for tench early in the season. There was something magical about waiting for the feeding bubbles to start to approach the bait under the float, normally at dawn or dusk. Much of that magic was lost with the introduction of electronic bite indicators and all these fancy rigs and baits.Heidegger made many a noteworthy analysis about the way that technology doesn’t not always add to the experience and joy of being human, I feel sad that subsequent generations will never share that experience.

I am glad you enjoyed it. I am hoping to do more with Andrew who although not a replacement Jack has a style similar to him in so much all the words come from his memory and not a sheet of paper. I don’t know if you have seen either of his programmes? They are on my channel.

Does anyone remember a series called Country Boy which also had Jack in it and a wonderful theme tune ?

Out of Town is the only other series I remember, apart, of course, for HOW. Should have googled first, lol. It looks like they took a kid from the city and taught him about country ways. It ran from1967 to 1970. I don't remember it myself ( %yrs - 8yrs old at the time )

Country boy as I remember was shown in the late sixties and featured Jack explaining the country side and it's ways to a young lad, a bit like Out of Town for kids. It wasn't shown for very long where I lived which was in the area covered by Granada TV.

I remember the jack first shows, "Out of Town" always on a Friday early evening, but the original fishing TV show was Olly Kite it was Kite that got Jack into TV fishing shows, and you would often see him on ND registered fishing boat owned by Aston-Smith out of Lymington, Jack use to keep a cathodal hull boat on a gully on Pennington Marshes not far from the old Checkers Pub, just up the road from Dennis Wheatley use to write his books which many were turned into films by the Shepard Bush Studios

When i was a young boy/teenager in the early 70s when i lived n died for football n fishing , the weekend before the 16th of june men n boys of the village would gather at the village pond and we would clean it , mostly from the banks with grappling hooks rakes on ropes and one rowing boat going round dredging the duck weed releasing last seasons floats we even used to jump in , happy memories of a bygone era.

I've sawn timber with a steamer driven rack bench....the hardest part is sharpening the blade every morning. The "Yankie" blades were the best, they have removable teeth than can be discarded when too worn.

It is said that the Bowler was actually designed for the groundskeepers of Holkam Hall in Norfolk. I only found out because i was there recently. Ideas guys?

Of course this wasn’t how the hat was made or fitted, but at least he had the gist of the idea, it was merely the lining mechanism that was altered.

They’re fitted on a form that is made from Alder timber. It’s the only wood suitable for the steam. If you tried forming it around the head, you couldn’t possibly make one. It’s the ribbon inside that is adjusted for the shape of the head and that’s why it took a couple of hours to adjust accordingly.

Back in the days when people lived, whereas now most merely exist.

No H&S back then and true tradesmen
There was H&S but that only covered places of work as in The Factories Act - Shops, Offices and Railway Premises Act along with the various Farming and Agricultural acts. This way filmed at a steam fair/rally so those rules didn't apply.

Makes me long for when life was so much slower.
A "Mundella Act" would cause anarchy in the States. That's our best time of year for fishing.
It's an outdated thing, not necessary these days, as due to warmer climate the fish spawn at different times of the year.
