Retarder Voith Mercedes-Benz Actros MP 2, MP 3 , MP 4.

Technical problems frequently occur with truck retarders from the manufacturer Voith. Although the quality of Voith Retarders is very good and robust, one must bear in mind that the Retarders were installed in Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicles, built between 1996 and 2020. This means that more than 700,000 Mercedes-Benz Actros of the model series MP1, MP2, MP3 and MP4 were equipped with the Voith Retarder.
If the retarder is defect, there are several technical consequences. In the best case, the vehicle no longer has the additional braking effect of the retarder. In the worst case, the coolant from the retarder gets into the transmission and occurs massive consequential damages.
A new retarder from the manufacturer Voith R115HV is currently (December 2021) available from Mercedes-Benz at a price of €4,827 net in exchange.
Another option is to have the defective retarder repaired or overhauled at a specialist workshop. Depending on the damage, this costs between 2,500 € and 3,700 €.
The third option is to buy a used retarder. As with almost all used spare parts, however, it should be noted that in most cases no one can describe the condition of the used retarder and you are buying a pig in a poke. The price for a used retarder is currently (December 2021) between €800 and €1,000 net.
