    Beautiful restoration but when you demonstrated it you adjusted it wrong. The pipe should make contact with both jaws and the back of the wrench. Otherwise you can put the pipe out of round.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  6 лет назад +16

      Hello Thomas! That's a great tip! I can see how snugging the wrench closer to the pipe would give additional surface pressure and reduce crushing the pipe! I'm going to PIN this comment so that we can all learn this awesome lesson! Thanks again for pointing this out!!!!!

      Scout, What grit of sandpaper do you use to remove the pitting on the belt sander? Thanks

    Thanks for your videos, they are easy to watch and very positive and relaxing.
    I know people say " why do you waste your time"? Blah blah blah....fixing up old junk.....
    The thrill of the find, the nostalgia, the meditative state of forgetting the world while buffing , the act of appreciating something unique or useful that has been long forgotten, the bit of pride in using your skill and turning some junk back into a useful and attractive item ....so many things.
    I've learned some great tricks from your videos. Thank you.

    I'm from Greenfield, it's neat to think we actually produced something of quality still renown today! Far cry from that these days. Great video, really awesome job on the restoration!

    Ill be very honest, out of all of your restorations, this is my favorite... now, i know i praise this channel often, but it really is my favorite.. you have inspired a new hobby apon my self, and as a young individual of 20 years old, im out repurposing old tools for the HVAC trade im pursueing. Thank you again for all the knowledge, and experience you share with us viewers. I genuinely take your instruction and apply them to many of projects and work that i do. Thanks Scout
    Kevin,

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  6 лет назад +6

      Hello Kevin! The HVAC trade is a great trade to know! Unfortunately too many young people like yourself are trying to take the easy way out and go for desk jobs and work in the computer industry... Then when applying for a job they are faced with tremendous competition and wind up as Barista's at Starbucks! =) If you are 20 years old and enjoy tools and mechanical work the world is your oyster! The HVAC trade needs qualified people and there is a ton of work out there! Once you've acquired the skills to service and repair HVAC you can crossover to many other fields if you want to. The important thing is to work smart not hard and do everything you can to retire by the age of 55, that means making sure you plan accordingly... I went the asme route as you (working with my hands) and just retired last year at 55... I have a lot of friends that chose the easy path and will be working until they are 70! I'm very impressed with your direction in life... Thanks very much!!!!!!

    I watch a lot of woodwork/metalwork channels etc. I see that today, 'joining in' means having tools like Kreg pockethole jigs, fancy planers/jointers etc and I imagine back in the day such tools as those you restore had the same kind of 'must have' to be competitive in their trade. Thankyou for bringing first aid to history - your work is so valuable [as well as compulsive viewing]

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  6 лет назад +1

      Hello Keith! My Uncle always used to say "Times change, People don't" and we never really understood what he meant but as time passed I understand more and more what he was getting at... Take us for example, we enjoy working with our hands and building things... I'm sure thousands of years ago there was some guy sitting in a cave somewhere figuring out how to put a round rock on his cart so it would roll... I'm sure he got the same satisfaction as we do after the job was complete! Can you imagine how wonderful it was between 1850 and 1920 when there was an explosion of inventions and technology!? Thanks very much for adding to this great hobby with your comments! =)

    What a great Little Giant wrench, with two-sided jaws to boot! ScoutCrafter, you are a one-man-band significantly boosting interest in great, high quality tools that, lamentably, are no longer made. Your restoration methods are amazingly effective, and you make it look easy! Keep up the great work, and keep the videos coming!

      Hello Francis!!! You are so right!! Between 1850 and 1930 there was an explosion of amazing inventions and designs in all areas of manufacturing from individuals all over the world... It was an amazing time for intellectual development!!! Even with today's computer design and the internet, many "new" ideas are just recycled old ones! Thanks very much!!

I hope you have a wonderful birthday today, and many more!!!! Thanks Doug!!!!!

      Thank you ScoutCrafter. I am enjoying my birthday. I started it with a brisk walk. After that I started in on making my favorite dish for dinner. Beans and cornbread along with a sliced red onion. Now I am waiting to have some cake and ice cream to round out the day. Was it Destiny Rides Again? I love old westerns. He appeared in a few good ones. I would have been excited to work on that wrench too. Sounds like you had a great day like I did. You are more than welcome. I can not wait to start on my first tool project and I look forward to sharing it with you. Thanks again and have a great evening sir.

      Hello Mike! These pits were just a mess and took away from the beauty of the original design... There aren't too many of these left around that aren't beat to hell! What a cool wrench. It's funny you mention how many sanding belts you went through. I just ordered several different types of belts and sanding discs. Hopefully later this week I will have time to make a video about the various types I ordered and why I think I need them. Anyway, keep up the good work. Cheers.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  6 лет назад +1

      Hello Joe!!!!! You are on the right track with Roloc's the only problem is you need a good compressor! I know you scored that sweet compressor from that Craigslist deal of the century! =) The more coarse the grit the more fragile the belt... I broke at least four 60 grit belts yet my 220 and up holds up great! I saw a video on Norton Orange abrasives, they look awesome! but you get what you pay for! The metal isn't easy on sanding belts, pads or discs...However it beats filing! lol Looking forward to your next video!!!!!! Loved the vise!!!!

    Gorgeous! Interesting that there is neither the external spring seen in the older"Stillson" pattern nor the internal spring of the "Ridgid". I feel like I'm forgetting who came out with the modern pattern. Gotta go to my shop( at work) and look at a bunch of them and report back ;-). I'll also count how many of these guys I have ;-) Keep up the great work Scoutcrafter!

    I have this 14" wrench. ConEd left it in my parent's house after changing the gas meter over 50 years ago. Mine was painted orange which is a color that I think ConEd used in that time period. Nice to know how old it is.

  • @AlexCPettit
    @AlexCPettit 6 лет назад

    When you painted this orange, did you paint all of it then remove the paint from the areas that weren't originally painted?
    Love the dedication you have. I have just got myself a Gordon Sheffield England 10" wrench to try and restore like you do!

    What a neat wrench. Looks like the one side doesn't really add anything, but I guess you get a second set of jaws if you wear one side out.

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  6 лет назад

      Hello Metal Butcher! I was hoping one of the pro plumbers that we have here might chime in on if they worked or were more of a gimmick... The 10" Little Giant wrench I have has no rear teeth... so maybe it was a size thing... I don't do much plumbing as my back threatens to go on strike when I even think of getting under a sink! lol It is a awesome looking wrench if nothing else! =) Thanks!!!!

    • @TheMetalButcher
      @TheMetalButcher 6 лет назад

      Well the rear teeth might be useful as you mentioned, but even counting that. The whole opposite side of the wrench mirrors the first. So even if you swap the jaw over, you don't get any additional features.

      Hi David! There are no secrets here! Normally I use thinner to remove the paint from the lettering, but with such a bright color as Orange it doesn't really show! @ScoutCrafter  6 лет назад

      Hello Robert! You've come to the right place! lol I am trying desperately to keep my videos about 5 minutes long which is extremely hard for me since I am so long winded! =) So to do that I tried to detail one procedure in each video, this way every video isn't 15 minutes long! So if you go back over the last month or so you will see just about every procedure is covered at least once... I kind of do a lot of repetitive procedures and am afraid of boring people to death! After you watch a few if there is still something you're not clear on please don't hesitate to ask away! Thanks very much!!!!!

    Pro plumber: This wrench would be used mostly in hard to reach areas if it was in my tool box. Especially down in the ground attaching fittings onto water meters.

      @@ScoutCrafter you did beautiful work. I'd be proud to own that wrench.

    • @austinpatrick2682
      @austinpatrick2682 6 лет назад +1

      @@ScoutCrafter there's one more advantage to this design but you really have to have two of them and you really have to have your head on straight to understand the setup. In a typical situation you use two pipe wrenches in opposing positions to tighten or loosen the joint. If you flip the paw up on one and down on the other and put them on the same side of the pipe you can accomplish the same necessary mechanics without having to place the handles opposite each other. This is EXTREMELY useful when taking joints apart against a wall where the pipe is actually secured to or tightly up against the wall and you can't get a wrench behind it. I've made due for a long time without a wrench like that but if a had one it would get used I'm sure.

      @@austinpatrick2682 I’m a plumber and I actually have one of these I found at a garage sale it looks worse than the before of this one though I want to restore it though to make it look nicer, it works the same way if you can put a standard offset wrench on one side and then use this one to put on the “wrong side” to get the same effect

    This is one of my favorites. Incredible work. I have a question. In general, when you polish a tool, did it come like that when it was sold new or just something you prefer?

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  6 лет назад +3

      Hello Brian, Some tools came polished but very few, usually they were fine sanded and then clear-coated with a shellac or lacquer. Polishing takes a lot of time and they could never make money on a tool that took hours to finish. The average tool has less then ten minutes of man hours in it during the manufacturing process. There are a few manufacturers who spend more time on their tools and it shows in both appearance and cost! =) Thanks very much!!!
